PHOTOGRAPHY & DIGITAL MEDIA Senior photography students have made a great start to the year with a Year 11 class running
and Year 12 are continuing on in 2020. Year 11 have been investigating the elements and
principles of design and have undertaken a series of minitasks that required students to look at
some of the building blocks of how photographs are put together. Some of the themes for the
minitasks were line, colour, shape, tone and texture.
Jade Colwell Year 11 Tone
Cian Lang Year 11 Colour
Madison McLachlan Year 11 Colour Logan Hodges Year 11 Line
Kenya Lacey Year 11 Texture
Caitlin Radnedge Year 11 Line photocollage
Year 12 Photography have also been busy working on
a critical and historical presentation about an
innovation that has changed photography for the
better. So to keep them motivated we invited Chewy
the school dog to the class. Kyah Moore really
enjoyed the visit and we are hoping for a few more
visits to photography.

There are big things happening in photography in 2020 and
we will be including some of the students’ photographs here
in the newsletter on a regular basis.

YEAR 10 CREATIVE EXPRESSION
Year 10 are currently working on “Altered Art Books”. The books are based on a personal
interest theme. All students have been learning new techniques and applying them to create
the wonderful results you can see in the images below.
Mr Matt Caulfield, Art teacher
Year 10 Big Picture Student, Kenneth Apps, gained a lot from the presentation by Luke Kennedy when he spoke to junior students in Week 7. Below is the personal reflection he completed as part of his Big Picture Folio of work, demonstrating the impact and importance of taking opportunities to learn from the experiences and perspectives of others beyond our school setting.
Motivational Speaker Reflection Luke S. Kennedy
Luke Kennedy was an overweight, drug and alcohol addicted criminal who was too busy trying to impress his mates
to realise the actions that he had been a part of weren’t the path to enlightenment. But after the unfortunate
deaths of his friends and his near-death experience, he had turned his life around for the better. On the 10th of
March 2020, Years 7 through to 10 students were fortunate enough to hear the inspirational story of Luke Kennedy
and how he turned his life around for the better.
Luke had a happy childhood and was open to the thousands of opportunities that would be presented to him each
day, but as he entered his teen years, anxiety took control. He wanted to be liked and hated to be criticised and so
he allowed others to corrupt his mind and become someone that no one would ever want to be. He wanted out of
the situation he was in. He never wanted to be dragged into negative situations, but still, he listened to his so-called
“Friends” and took in drugs and alcohol to silence the thoughts of his true self. They gave him labels, they dragged
him into violence and crime. The near possibility of a prison sentence without his mate’s concern was what pushed
him to notice just how useless the actions he was a part of were. It was a clean slate and after a while earning funds
in a handbag shop and eventually becoming the business owner of the Punchy’s Gym in Sydney, he became a best-
selling author of A Stabbed Ego and continues to speak all over NSW.
The purpose of this talk was to encourage others to make their own decisions and not to take after your mates,
especially if you’re amongst the wrong crowd. Create positive labels and live by them, create a goal and stick to it. If
you end up with a negative label, make the small changes to switch it up and help yourself out. There have been
many speakers come to the school but Luke’s story was very specific to me. I haven’t joined a gang… yet… but I
have been shaped into the person I am (Loud, easily distracted and obnoxious) by the mates that I hang around and
so I am making small changes by almost completely blocking out the outside world and meditating each night and
eventually I will be able to stop being so distractive to others and balance my school and home life.
The end result of this fantastic afternoon of watching and listening Luke Kennedy speak was going home with a
smile on my face knowing that I can make a change… and get a good ol’ selfie.
Last Wednesday, 36 Year 10 students went to Gosling Creek Reserve to complete some
geographical field work. They spent the day examining the different types of Flora and Fauna
found at the reserve, completing field sketches, gathering information for their assessment tasks
and identifying human alterations to the environment.

YEAR 10 GEOGRAPHY
In the mid 1960's a new high school was proposed for Orange to be located on the eastern side
of the city. The Department of Education named the proposed high school "Orange East High
School".
The choice of name for the new school created much public interest and many suggestions
were placed before the Principal, Fred Dobbin and the P & C Association. Before making his
decision on which name to recommend the Department of Education, Mr Dobbin conducted a
secret ballot of students and staff and the result was conclusively in favour of “The Canobolas
High School”. Mr Chown’s P & C Association had unanimously supported the idea. Mr Dobbin
then recommended this name to the Minister for Education and also local member for
Orange, Charles Cutler, who gave his approval for its use.
No doubt those who favoured the name “Canobolas” were partly influenced by the fact that
from the school, the magnificent view to the west is dominated by the age old Mount
Canobolas. Kevin Chown recalls Allan Hatswell insisting on the school being named ‘The’
Canobolas High School as Orange was part of The Canobolas Shire at the time.
Other choices included A.B. Paterson High School
East Orange High School

CHESS REPORT On Friday 13th March the school chess team consisting of Brock Anderson, Sean Morial,
Jayden Christoff and Tyler Gilbey along with reserves Cooper Smith, Oscar Knight, Damien
Christoff and Zak Moss competed against Orange Anglican Grammar School in the first round of
the NSW Junior Chess league inter school competition.
This year the games were played in the fantastic newly renovated learning space above the
canteen. While the tie was lost, all games played were highly competitive with Brock's board
one game lasting almost an hour and half. The final results saw Tyler come away with a win but
losses to Jayden, Sean and Brock in his epic match.
The team and reserves are looking forward to their next round
opponents, Trundle High School, once their tie can be
organised. Being mainly juniors, the team knows that these
matches are great building blocks to team success in the
future.
Chess players meet in the Library at
Recess on Monday's for practice games
and coaching. The boards are also
available all week during lunch for
students to practice this clever sport.
