Dear Parents, Measurement of Academic Progress (MAP) testing and make-ups have been completed. Now that the testing is completed, the teachers will analyze the data for instruction. All student scores will be sent out on mid-October. If you received a form for the early morning programs for math and reading, please note that the programs begin on October 2, 2017. Students must plan to arrive at school by 7:10 a.m. Homework pod begins on October 2, and it is held in the art room on the ground floor (Room111). Students can attend homework pod on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 2:30 pm. to 3:00 pm. The teacher on duty is not available to do tutoring, but may assist with any difficulties the student is having with the homework. All students who are not attending after school activities must be picked up at dismissal. Students are not allowed on the Green Court at dismissal unless they are supervised by a parent. Parents who wish to receive more information on their child's progress may schedule an appointment via e-mail. Teachers will respond to your email within 24 hrs. Many of our parents have volunteered to help us in the cafeteria as well as on the playground, and we are very thankful for the extra assistance. If you have not volunteered and would like to do so, please contact Ms. Hyndman. We continue to look for ideas to build our cultural programs. If you have an idea on ways to promote and bring awareness to our diverse culture, please contact Ms. Julien. Spanish club for students in grades 2-5 require at least 10 students to be enrolled. These classes will start next month once we have the students enrolled. Please contact Ms. Neva in room 235 or email [email protected]. These clubs are important for students to maintain their mother tongue. Additionally, I invite parents to share information about their culture at our town meetings. Please let me know if you are interested. Suzette Julien, ES Principal

After our PYP evaluation visit last academic year, we received the final report that required our teachers to change several units to include all science and social studies standards and benchmarks taught within the curriculum. Our aim is to ensure that the units are as transdisciplinary as possible to eliminate the need for stand-alone teaching of a topic. On a weekly basis teachers are spending time writing and tweaking units. It is a work in progress that we will continue to refine each year. Words of the month: caring, enthusiasm and open-minded. Your children should be able to tell you how they are practicing these words.

Fourth Grade has been using their 21st Century technology skills to create their PYP projects. Through the use of iPads, a green screen, and an app called, DoInk, the students created news broadcast about how a community can positively or negatively rebuild their community after a disaster. The students research various locations, created scripts, and filmed themselves. Once filming was completed they used DoInk to edit their videos into a final project.

INDIVIDUALS & SOCIETIES INDIVIDUALS & SOCIETIES

CELEBRATING CULTURAL HERITAGE Roxanne Veck (Grade 8)

In Grade 8 Individuals and Societies students have been studying the link between culture and identity. Our statement of Enquiry this unit being: Culture forms part of our shared identity, which should be preserved over time, place and space. To this end students were given the task of researching an aspect of intangible cultural heritage from a location of their choice. Intangible meaning the values or forms of expression belonging to a particular culture of which there may not necessarily be physical evidence. This might be a festival, a ritual or ceremony, even oral traditions where stories or songs are passed from generation to generation.

Their aim was to show, not tell us about their chosen aspect of culture by letting us experience it, rather than just be told about it. Most chose food! We realised very quickly that food forms a very important link to culture and therefore identity, the challenge was to teach us and involve us and not just feed us! Students came up with a plethora of cultural experiences as documented in the photographs below. One group focused on Greek mythology by presenting us each with a box we

were not allowed to touch, they then led students through Theseus’ time in the Labyrinth and ended by unleashing the evils of the world on students who had opened their box (push-ups, sit ups and jumping jacks were their version of evil!). Another group presented Trinidadian Carnival, taking us on a musical journey starting with traditional pan right up to the 2017 Road March winners. They brought in and wore costumes for us to try and ended with us each making our own carnival mask.

National Sushi day in Japan was celebrated by one group where we had the opportunity to make our own rice balls and eat some delicious Sushi for breakfast! Chinese New Year was the focus of another group, exploring the use of colour and symbols including a traditional game, a bit like capture the

flag, involving dragon formations. Once again we ate delicious offerings of sweet and sour chicken and fried rice. A Croatian courting and wedding ritual involving the making and decorating of gingerbread was celebrated by another group. We learned that gingerbread is often associated with festivals and celebrations throughout Europe and

students were able to decorate their own cookies whilst listening to traditional folk music. Divali was celebrated by another group where we were invited to paint diyas and we enjoyed a range of lovely food from doubles, pholourie balls and traditional sweet treats too.

The Chinese Gesar Festival was recreated with origami workshops and… you guessed it, food! We had a banquet of wantons, pow and spring rolls to mention but a few. We were encouraged to learn Brazilian Samba, with the promise of authentic Brazilian chocolate. Our expert tutor had everyone's feet

moving and impressed us all with her amazingly fast footwork! Here we learned the regional differences and significance of the dance, not just at carnival time, but year round. Finally we had our very own Indian wedding ceremony. We learned that unlike many weddings this was a three day event, with many months of celebrations leading up to the actual

ceremony. Students were formally invited and participated in the ceremonies, playing key family roles. And of course we were treated to a reception buffet of poppadoms, samosas, naan bread and other delicious delicacies. It was a week full of new experiences and a real celebration of cultural diversity!

The Social Studies department is pleased to announce that The International School of Port of Spain will be competing in the first annual National Secondary School Entrepreneurship Competition (NSSEC).

The competition is the first of its kind in the Caribbean and is managed by Stone Brothers Limited.

This is a consulting, educational and research firm led by Dr. Christian P. Stone and supported by The Ministry of Education, The Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs, The Trinidad and Tobago Chamber of Commerce, Innovative Learning Solutions and Shell Trinidad.

Through the generosity of corporate sponsorship, one teacher (Ms. Fyfe) and five students with an additional two supporting members from our High

School. These students are: Ashleigh Garcia, Amanda Conyers, Nicholas George, Jordan Mukerji and Anthony Rahael with supporting team members Remy Brewer and Phillip Pollonias of Business Studies will participate in the competition, which runs from September – November 2017.

NSSEC represents a valuable opportunity for our students to participate in a world-class, technologically advanced, entrepreneurship simulation.

The simulation has been used by hundreds of top companies, universities and schools around the world with overwhelming success.

Participation in the competition will train students in all areas of a business,

providing a realistic and authentic environment where students can practice strategic planning and develop their entrepreneurial skills.

Students gain hands on experiences in the creation and operation of a simulated business without any risk or cost to the students or school.

Students are introduced to the concepts of creating a new company, including decision making responsibility and accountability in the areas of Marketing, HR, Finance, Accounting, Manufacturing, while functioning a dynamic competitive environment. That is, our school will operate their simulated business in an environment populated with other businesses, which are controlled and influenced by the other schools in the competition.

Dear Middle School Parents, I am excited to bring you an opportunity to get together and discuss your children with me! I will be offering a parent discussion group once a week on Monday mornings that will focus adolescent development based on the book, “Why Do They Act That Way? A Survival Guide to The Adolescent Brain For You and Your Teen”. The discussion group meets once a week on Monday mornings. It will focus on adolescent development based on the book, “Why Do They Act That Way? A Survival Guide to The Adolescent Brain For You and Your Teen”. The group will be a forum for parents to discuss what you read, reflect on your own experiences with respect to what we have learned about the adolescent brain development, and ask questions, and share ideas in a safe and structured environment. About the book: “Why Do They Act That Way? A Survival Guide to the Adolescent Brain for You and Your Teen” by David Walsh, is an easy read, where the

author blends humor, warmth, scientific substance and practical advice for parents. He thoroughly explains the growth and functioning of the adolescent brain, and how the changes of their developing brain, affect teenager’s behaviors. Every chapter tackles different issues commonly faced by teenagers and their parents, and gives examples of such issues in vignettes written by the author’s first-hand experience of more than 30 years as a teacher, school counselor, and therapist. In the end of each chapter, the author includes a ‘Parent Survival Kit’ which contains the knowledge, attitudes, and skills parents need for raising teenagers. The book is to help parents build a “well stocked kit” in order to help them maintain perspective,

balance, and peace of mind which better enables parents to help their adolescent sons and daughters survive the many conflicts and contradictions he or she will face. In addition, at the end of each chapter, he asks a set of questions to help parents assess how well prepared they are in that category with a comprehensive list of ‘Dos and Don’ts for parents to follow. The focus on the brain’s development and functioning during adolescents, help parents understand the structure of the brain and how all the parts and systems work together to perform complex functions at lightning speed, which for example, help parents understand why adolescents are so impulsive. Attaining the book: 1. The school library has a limited number of Kindle versions of the book that can be borrowed. 2. The ISPS MS Counseling Department also has some hard copies for lending. 3. Parents can order a copy online for their personal reference libraries. The group will meet on Monday mornings from

7:30-8:30 am in the green room beginning October 9 and runs weekly for 9 sessions until December 11. If you are a parent of an ISPS Middle School student, and are interested in joining this discussion group, please email me, Ms. Virginia, at [email protected] to express your intent. Thank you very much and I look forward to seeing you!

FROM THE MIDDLE SCHOOL COUNSELOR, MS. VIRGINIA:

Parent Group Objectives:

To help you see more clearly what your adolescents are going through.

To learn the “Brain Basics” in order to understand, from a phys-iological stand point, the stages and changes of adolescent brain devel-opment.

To help you help your children navigate the common dangers and challenges in his or her life.

To help you gain confidence in knowing that you can keep your sanity and composure in the face of teenage emo-tional and behavioral upheavals.

ISPS PTO NEWSLETTER

The ISPS Board of directors has suggested an amendment to the PTO by laws for the purpose of electing a Parent Director at the next PTO Meeting.

Section 3 of the PTO bye laws under the heading Special elections states : "Special elections may be conducted to fill the mid term vacancies. The term for such appointments will end accord-ing to the original timeline for that position." The ISPS Board has requested that the term for the newly appointed Parent director run for two years so that it can run concurrently with the alternate. This would mean that the term would not run according to the original timeline. The PTO executive has agreed that this makes sense in this instance. Notice is herby given that at the PTO meeting, carded for Oct. 4th, this motion will be passed as a special resolution prior to the vote for Parent Directors and Alternate parent Directors

Expression of Interest to serve on the School Board of The International School of PoS

ADRIENNE D’ARCY

NOMINEE STATEMENT

Dear Committee I, Adrienne D’Arcy, offer myself to serve as Parent Director on the ISPS School Board of Directors. I am a firm believer that when parents and families get involved in our children’s education, that our schools perform better and our children receive a better educational experience. My family is fairly new to the ISPS Community with this being our son’s second year. We have marvelled over how easily he has adapted and how well he has performed. I am an accountant by education and an auditor by profession. I am a partner in a multinational professional services firm and have also served as local finance head for a multinational life insurance corporation. Through my work experiences I bring a deep understanding of financial performance evaluation and management, corporate governance and compliance, risk management and mitigation as well as business development. For your good consideration, my credentials are as follows: I am a Partner at Ernst and Young in the Assurance Service Line in our Trinidad and Tobago office. I have more

than twenty years of audit and accounting experience, serving large domestic, regional and international clients in the financial services industry. This includes working with companies in the insurance, banking, asset manage-ment and pension funds sectors.

I am a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (FCCA) and practicing member of the Insti-tute of Chartered Accountants of Trinidad and Tobago (ICATT). I sit on ICATT’s Auditing and Accounting Standards Committee (AASC) and also represent the ICATT on the Payment System Council of the Central Bank of Trinidad and Tobago.

I am a Finance Director on the Board of one of Trinidad’s leading private primary schools, a post that I have held for the past seven (7) years. As the Finance Director, I support the school’s financial operations including the setting of the annual budgets, determination of key items such as remuneration and school fees, the preparation of financial statements and the management of the audit process.

This is an important time for our ISPS. We are operating in an environment where there are challenging economic and social conditions. These conditions will continue to have an impact on how we operate first and foremost as an educational institution but also as a business that must perform effectively to ensure that we deliver on the promise of a world class education that creates those thinkers and doers that will shape a better world. I look forward to your consideration. Yours sincerely Adrienne D’Arcy

ROBERT HADAD

NOMINEE STATEMENT

Dear ISPS Community, I would like to express my willingness to serve as a Parent Director on the ISPS Board of Directors. I presently have my two children at ISPS; my older son in High School in Grade 9 and my younger son in the Elementary School in Grade 5. After graduating from The University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus in 1988 with a BSc in Accounting, I began working as an auditor at KPMG Corporate Finance Limited. After a successful three-year tenure, I tendered my resignation, in order to pursue a dream of starting my own business. Together with my two brothers John and Joseph, we formed Hadco Ltd. in 1992 and I hold the position of Group co-Chief Executive Officer. What started off as primarily a food and electrical import and distribution company has evolved into a dynamic and diverse group of companies with specialty in other areas such as lighting, ice cream/ice cream cone manufacturing, bonded warehousing facilities, transport services and retail operations. The following companies fall under the Hadco Group umbrella: Haagen Dazs, Peppercorns, Fresh Organics, Nova Lighting, Eco Impact, The Lighthouse, Apadoca’s, G&M Warehousing, Sampson’s Transport, Creamery Novelties and Happy Time Ice Cream Cones. Three years ago, Hadco Ltd. embarked on a partnership with Phase II Pan Groove Steel Orchestra. I believe in promoting and supporting our local culture and see it as important to form a link between business and society. My goal with this venture is to enable the members of this band to use their resources and talents to be a sustainable entity all throughout the year and not just at Carnival time. I served as a Board member of the Brian Lara Cancer Treatment Foundation from 2008 to 2010. I understand that life is about balance, and spending quality time with family is a top priority. I am confident of my leadership skills and my reputation in the business community. I believe in a hands-on approach to solving problems and am committed to excellence. I am eager to make a positive difference wherever I can. Sincerely, Robert Hadad

NOMINEE STATEMENT

To the ISPS Parent Teacher Organization

Dear Parents, Swiss citizen, business economist and holder of a Master of Public Administration, I confirm with these words my interest and my willingness to pursue my role within the ISPS School Board as a Parent Director. Having been elected in June 2015, I went trough, with most of you, some difficult times for ISPS. Lots of work has been done since May-June last year and a lot still remains. We, as a board, are working hard on it, and I do really hope I will be given the opportunity to finish the job we started. As a Parent Director, I try to make sure that the interest of each child is put first and that the quality and sustainability of the school is maintained and improved. To ensure a great future for the school, we need to finalize quickly the School Improvement Plan and not only review policies but also implement all of them to be in adequacy with the needs of our stakeholders. On a professional point, I have been General Secretary of numerous associations in the fields of local development and employers associations. I also developed a broad experience in teaching at various levels, mainly to young professionals. Coming to Trinidad, I had to leave my position as a lecturer at the Swiss University for Applied Sciences and my role as member of the scientific council of this institution. As I really enjoy taking part in the development of my local community, I have been involved in politics in Switzerland at the local level and was elected Chairman of the City Council of my hometown Rolle. Having time, passion and loving to deal with a lot of issues, one of these being human relations, I would enjoy to be able to continue to share my various experiences, including working in executive boards, with the ISPS. I thank you in advance for your trust and I’m looking forward to carry on working for the School, its development, the quality of the education and of course its stakeholders, in particular the students. Yours sincerely, N. Walter
