Chairs: John Fingert Paloma Liton
Session Description
Autophagy is cellular process in which proteins, organelles, and even pathogens are engulfed by phagosomes and degraded. Experimental models of glaucoma, studies of inherited normal tension glaucoma, and studies of transgenic mice all suggest that autophagy may have an important role in glaucoma pathogenesis. This special interest group will explore and discuss the involvement of autophagy in glaucoma pathophysiology in human patient populations, animal models of glaucoma, and cell culture.

Chairs: Miltos Balidis Spyros Georgaras Kazuaki Kadonosono Tetsuro Oshika Elizabeth Patsoura Kourous Rezaei Bruce Spivey Baha Toygar Peter Wiedemann
Session Description
The Ophthalmic premier league (OPL) is a symposia to be conducted in the WOC 2014 in Tokyo This is akin to the European league games but with a difference as the OPL is connected to ophthalmology. The idea here is to have 4 teams with 4 captains. Each will have totally 4 members in the team. Each team member will be given 4 minutes to show the most challenging cataract / complication cataract case. This will only be through videos. In the video the speaker will also have to show how he or she has managed this case. There will be a good discussion on each case for the remaining time. We can also have an ARS (Automatic response system) if available for audience to enjoy and vote which is the best team. All the speakers are top class and will show excellent videos.

IS-TH-34Minimally Invasive Vitreoretinal Surgery: Instrumentation, Complications, and Techniques
Chairs: J. Fernando Arevalo Fumio Shiraga Young Yoon
Session Description
Microincision technology has changed the face of vitreoretinal surgery during the past decade. MIVS offers patients convenience and the possibility of faster recovery and visual rehabilitation. The field has changed quickly from the early 25-gauge systems to 23-gauge instrumentation that overcame many of the compromises of 25-gauge, and now with newer 25-gauge systems with stiffer instruments, better fluidics, and improved lighting. Furthermore, several recent advances in technology increase the ease of surgery, reduce complications, improve results, and expand the surgical indications of MIVS into the more complicated vitreoretinal pathologies. In addition, advent of newer wide-angle surgical viewing system allows the surgeons to perform the whole MIVS procedure more safely and more efficiently. However, complications still occur and its proper management is crucial to achieve good results. This symposium will discuss new instrumentation, complications, and techniques with MIVS.

IS-TH-39EVER Session: Multimodal Imaging of Ocular Fundus
Chairs: Constantin Pournaras Leopold Schmetterer
Session Description
Multimodal imaging methods have significantly improved the comprehension of the pathophysiologic mechanisms and the diagnosis and management of the ocular fundus pathologies. The combination of fundus photography (color, monochromatic or autofluorescence images) and optical coherence tomography (OCT) can help the diagnosis of fundus pathologies. Fluorescein or indocyanine green angiography still remains useful when the other exams are not conclusive. Fundus angiography can be coupled with OCT. Wide-field fluorescein or indocyanine green angiography has improved the evaluation of peripheral retinal mainly in ocular oncology cases. Ultra-widefield fundus photography and UWFA can be successfully used in the pediatric patient population and in the case of existence of hereditary retinal diseases. Retinal imaging becomes an important tool helping the diagnosis and the observation of the progression of the disease. Spectral-domain OCT and the 'en face' tomographic aspect of the vitreoretinal interface has guided the surgical approaches of the vitreoretinal interface traction related pathologies, as well as the post operative potential problems and follow up.The functional OCT allows the evaluation of the retinal blood flow and simultaneous quantification of the retinal tissue structure. It appears to be an innovating sensitive technology that is able to detect in advance changes in patients with ischemic microangiopathies. The correlation of fundus autofluorescence (FAF) with the findings of SD OCT and visual acuity (VA) in the case of patients with branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO), could help the prediction of potential restoration of the photoreceptor integrity and visual recovery in BRVO patients.

IS-TH-60Clinical Applications of Tele-Ophthalmology
Chair: Georg Michelson
Session Description
One important aspect in preventive medicine is to find cases with minor manifestation of an upcoming disease. Early therapy will avoid severe consequences of the disease and improve quality of life. Evaluation of the retina and optic nerve head are an important cornerstone in preventive medicine. The vasculature, the neurons and axons of the retina and the optic nerve show early changes in some systemic diseases like arterial hypertension, diabetes and neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer. Retinal neurons and vessels serve as surrogate parameters for early detection, predicting the risk of fatal events, and monitoring the effect of therapy. Tele-Ophthalmology means imaging the retina and the optic nerve in remote locations combined with a telemedical assessment of these images by specialized ophthalmologists and computer aided image analysis-systems.

IS-TH-65The Human Resource Challenge - How Do We Deal with It?
Chair: Venkatesh Prajna
Session Description
The biggest bottle neck for a successful eye care service implementation programme is an effective human resource (HR) support. In this session, we have tried to address some of the neglected areas of HR. The talks will be a mix of prescriptive strategies as well as the sharing of the real life situations, in which effective and alternative use of the existing human resources are put into best use. The symposia will bring forth discussions on both the scenarios: that of very few resources as well as those situations, where human resources are abundantly present and where it has been effectively harnessed to bring out the alternative potential of medical personnel in research. All the speakers have significant practical experience in their varied geographies and their rich experience will be useful for us to understand this complex issue.

IS-TH-74Presbyopia Management: What Must We Know?
Chairs: Beatrice Cochener Kazuo Tsubota
Session Description
Surgical management of presbyopia represent the current major challenge in refractive surgery. Many techniques have been developed meaning that none has been able so far to restore perfectly the accommodation and to be proposed to all presbyopic patients. Actually the majority of methods compensate the loss of accommodation and have the additional goal of improving the near vision with respect of distance vision and no significant loss in quality of vision. The different corneal (photoablation, intrastromal femtosecond, inlays) and intraocular (multifocal and accommodative IOLs) procedures will be reviewed and discussed in terms of concept, interest, indications, limitations and outcomes. The discussion should lead to a decisional tree according to the age and the ametropia. Monovision has still a place when future treatment are oriented to the perspective of a true restoration based on lenticuloplasty with femtosecond and new accommodative lenses.

Chairs: Beatrice Cochener Roberto Zaldivar
Session Description
Phakic IOLs remain the best option for correcting high ametropia in patients with clear lens, providing better quality of vision than any other procedure especially lasik. However, safety of the implantation requires some precautions in selection of the patient and consideration of anatomical parameters in order to guaranty a perfect lens sizing and by the way the success of the surgery. Advantages, specificities and limitations of available models based on different location, respectively posterior chamber, iris supported and angle supported will be discussed. Whatever the concept, a long, strict and periodical follow up is required particularly focused on endothelium and angle changes. Tricks and pitfalls for surgical procedure, accurate IOL calculation and exam timetable will be debated by the 6 invited experts.

IS-TH-79SOE Session: Retinoblastoma: Intra-Arterial or Intra-Vitreal Chemotherapy (or Perhaps Not at All)?
Chairs: Stefan Seregard Akihiro Kaneko Carol Shields
Session Description
Retinoblastoma is the most common primary intraocular malignancy in childhood. During the last few decades, management of this disease has dramatically changed and chemotherapy has emerged as first-line treatment. This is a major change of concept as chemotherapy once used to be the last line of resort. Chemotherapeutic drugs may now be delivered not only systemically, but also selectively into the ophthalmic artery or even directly into the vitreous cavity. The pros and cons of these routes and current indications will be discussed.
