GOING PROSPECTING Now that he is a Group 1 winner, Havana Gold (Ire)(Teofilo {Ire}) has taken the pressure off and the PrixJean Prat hero takes a slight class drop to consolidatehis reputation in today=s G2 Prix Guillaume d=Ornano atDeauville. Qatar Racing and CSH=s solid performer, whoalso boasts last year=s G3 Somerville Tattersall S. on hisresume alongside a fourth in the May 25 G1 Irish 2000Guineas at The Curragh, goes up in trip to meet the G1 Prix du Jockey Club runner-up Morandi (Fr) (HolyRoman Emperor {Ire}) and the G1 Prix de Diane thirdSilasol (Ire) (Monsun {Ger}), so his stamina will betested to the full. ARichard has always told me he=s a10-furlong horse, so we will find out tomorrow if heimproves for the extra two furlongs,@ Qatar Racing=sRacing Manager David Redvers told PA Sport. AHe hassome big autumn entries and if--and that=s a big if--hegoes well tomorrow, that would obviously be the kindof races we=d be looking at.@ Silasol had previously wonthe Oct. 27 G1 Prix Marcel Boussac and May 26 G1 Prix Saint-Alary at Longchamp and is yet anotherclass Wertheimer product, along with the colt Pilote(Ire) (Pivotal {GB}). Runner-up to stable companionTriple Threat (Fr) (Monsun {Ger}) in the G2 Prix EugeneAdam at Maisons-Laffitte last time July 21, he hailsfrom the Andre Fabre stable successful a record ninetimes.

ON THE RISE J “TDN Rising Star” J Siyenica (Fr) (Azamour{Ire}) heads to Deauville today for the G3 Prix deLieurey, having got her career back on track with a winin the Listed Prix de Bagatelle at Chantilly July 25.Twice unplaced in Group 1 company prior to thatrevival, His Highness The Aga Khan=s homebred isprobably still up to returning to that standard in timenow that a more patient approach is being taken. Onewho has already made her mark in that sphere is SheikhMohammed bin Khalifa Al Thani=s What a Name (Ire)(Mr. Greeley), who was runner-up in last year=s G1 PrixJean-Luc Lagardere at Longchamp. After winning theG3 Prix Imprudence on her return at Maisons-LaffitteApr. 4, she has subsequently finished off the board inboth the G1 1000 Guineas at Newmarket May 5 andthe G2 Prix de Sandringham at Chantilly June 2.Bringing an unbeaten record to play is Godolphin=sZibelina (Ire) (Dansili {GB}), who captured Ascot=sListed Valiant S. when last seen July 26.

DESMOND DEALINGS Today=s G3 Desmond S. at Leopardstown features arematch between the main protagonists in the G3Minstrel S. at The Curragh July 20, Darwin (Big Brown)and Gordon Lord Byron (Ire) (Byron {Ire}). Just 1 3/4lengths separated the pair on that occasion and thelatter has an eight-pound turnaround in the weights thistime. Darwin remains one of the most interestinghorses housed at Ballydoyle at present and this willrepresent a true measurement of how much he isprogressing. Last year=s G1 Prix de la Foret winnerGordon Lord Byron has subsequently finished third toMoonlight Cloud (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) in the G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest at Deauville Aug. 4 and ifany rain comes could get revenge here. Dettori Booked for Shea Shea... Frankie Dettori has been given the call-up to ride G1 Al Quoz Sprint victor Shea Shea (SAf) (NationalEmblem {SAf}) in next week=s G1 Coolmore NunthorpeS. at York--a race the jockey has won three times--afterregular partner Christophe Soumillon failed in his appealto overturn a ban in France. AChristophe Soumillon wasdue to take the ride as usual, but he picked up asuspension in France and failed on appeal so won=t beavailable,@ explained trainer Mike de Kock. AWe=refortunate to have Frankie available to stand in. SheaShea is doing well, his coat looks good and he shouldbe at his best for the race. The Biggest Little Race in the World...By Lucas Marquardt

They call it Ruidoso Roulette. It's the term given byhorsemen to the local weather extremes that can wreakhavoc on a horse's chances in trials for the $2.6-million GI All American Futurity. Wind, rain, andsudden shifts in temperature can all make a horse goslower--or faster--as literally hundreds of 2-year-old

colts, geldings andfillies compete for 10 coveted spots inthe Futurity startinggate. Contested over 440 yards, theFuturity is QuarterHorse racing's biggestevent. ThinkKentucky Derby, minus a minute andforty seconds. It's

held each year on Labor Day in the mountain city ofRuidoso, New Mexico. This year, there are a staggering28 trials, staged for the first time over two days insteadof one. Today, beginning at 1 p.m. Eastern Time, 14 trials will be run. Tomorrow, another 14. The horseswho register the five fastest times on each day, win orlose, will advance to the Futurity final Sept. 2. Themargin for error is exceedingly slim. A bad post, abump from a rival at the break, a sudden headwind? That might be it for your Futurity hopes. The idea of trials, largely foreign to Thoroughbredracing, isn't the only unique aspect of the All AmericanFuturity, the third leg of a Quarter Horse racing TripleCrown that includes the Ruidoso Futurity in June andthe Rainbow Futurity in July. Maybe more interesting,in fact, is how the race is funded in the first place. Butfor about $75,000 in added-money contributed byRuidoso, the entirety of the estimated $2.6 millionvalue of the 2013 Futurity will have come fromnomination fees. Beginning when the horses are foalsand continuing right through trial day, owners, breedersand trainers contribute money into a pot that ultimatelyfunds the Futurity purse. Cont. p10

In Thoroughbred racing, by contrast, purses for thebiggest races are most often derived by handle and, inthe last 15 years or so, through alternative-gamingfunding. A notable exception, of course, is the Breeders'Cup, where more than half of the $25 million inguaranteed purse money in 2013 will be fromnomination, stallion and entry fees. But the Breeders'Cup also earns a substantial amount in pari-mutuelretention. Intra-race wagering--not including Pick 3's,4's, etc.--on the 2012 Breeders' Cup Classic alone wasover $15 million. By way of comparison, betting on the2012 All-American Futurity was about $620,000, orabout 4% of the Classic handle. Getting a horse to the All American Futurity isn'tcheap, either. Whereas a single $500 foal nominationwill make a horse eligible for the Breeders' Cup for life, the All AmericanFuturity requires a$200 foalnomination, followed by aseries of six moresustaining feesthat all togethertotal about$3,600. There'salso a $1,200 feefor starting in the trials, meaning that the connectionsof each of the 280 horses that will run in the next twodays have ponied up at least $4,800 in fees, or$1,344,000 in total. Horses can also be supplementedto the trials at a cost of $50,000. Not surprisingly, there are a vast number of nominatedhorses, maybe up to 1,000, whose ownersdiscontinued their payments at sometime during theprocess for whatever reason. Additionally, someowners pay the trial entry fee and don't enter the trialsto keep their horse eligible to the following year's AllAmerican Derby. That's because the purses of theRuidoso, Rainbow and All American Futurities arecapped at a certain amount, and any additional moniespaid in flow over into the following year's Derby. TheAll American Derby purse this year? An estimated $2.3 million. The All American Derby is held annuallythe day prior to the Futurity. If the cost of paying for a single horse to get to theFuturity trials seems pricey, think about trainer BlaneWood, who in total has a whopping 28 horses in theFuturity trials. Yep, one for each. The total nominationoutlay for those horses, none of whom are assured aspot in the Futurity starting gate, is no less than$134,400. All this begs the question--why do it this way? Well, it's the only way to do it, really. Ruidoso, thecity, isn't big. Sitting 6,900 feet up in the SacramentoMountains, it falls within Lincoln County, New Mexico, population 20,497. Though about half of the county'sresidents live in the greater Ruidoso area, that hardlymakes for a broad fanbase from which to buildattendance and handle. But current demographics tellonly a small part of the story.

The origins of the All American Futurity and RuidosoDowns are nearly as interesting as the history ofLincoln County, which gained fame in the 1800s for theso-called Lincoln County War--the Old West disputethat propelled Billy the Kid to notoriety. Back in the1930s, regional oil and cattlemen used to vacation inRuidoso, valued especially by West Texans for itscooler climes, and occasionally they held match racesfor their horses in a broad cornfield owned by a farmernamed Miller. Families picnicked as the stocky, fast-as-lightning horses competed. A track waseventually built, and by 1947, the first pari-mutuelraces were held at what was then called HollywoodPark. In 1953, Gene Hensley purchased the propertyand renamed the track Ruidoso Downs. Hensley hopedto build the track into one of Quarter Horse racing'spremier venues, but he had a problem: how do youpromote a track that isn't remotely close to a majormetropolitan center? His solution: create the richestevent in Quarter Horse racing. The idea of nominations-based futurities wasn't newat the time, and Hensley enlisted Carl Mercer, who hadlaunched a successful futurity in Southern California, and Ruidoso musician and promoter Ray Reed, to helpdevelop and promote this centerpiece of Ruidosoracing. The result was the All American Futurity.Contested for the first time in 1959, the inauguralFuturity achieved Hensley's aim--its $129,686 pursewas Quarter Horse racing's richest ever, and the racewas an instant success. The filly Galobar won thatyear, becoming of the first of three winers for ownerHugh Huntley and trainer Newt Keck in the first fiverunnings of the race. Before long, the All American Futurity became therace that every Quarter Horse owner, trainer and jockeywanted to win, and the number of nominated horseshas grown exponentially. The inaugural year saw 28entrants compete in three trials to make the Futurityfinal. A decade later, 103 horses competed in 11 trials. Those numbers doubled less than a decade later. Lastyear, a record 26 trials were held over the span of asingle day. Racing started at 10 a.m. and didn'tconclude until 7:00 in the evening--an exhausting ninehours for nearly everyone involved, not the least ofwhich were the jockeys that competed in nearly all ofthe trials. In response, Ruidoso decided to split the trials intotwo days for the first time. While "Ruidoso Roulette"will still be in play to a large degree, officials thoughtthe track variant might be too much between days, andso opted to take the five fastest horses today and thefive fastest tomorrow. So, what are some of the storylines heading intotoday's trials? Keep an eye on the aforementioned

Blane Wood. Among his 28 runners is the filly Big BizPerry, a 30-1 upset winner ofthe $1 million Heritage PlaceFuturity in June, but now thenumber one-ranked horse on theAQHARacing.com/Horseplayer.com national poll. She goes inthe 12th race today. Blane'sfather Leo won the All AmericanFuturity with Pie In The Sky in1979, but Blane, perennially aleading trainer, has yet to winthe race. Ricky Ramirez willhave the mount on Big Biz Perryand all of the leadingWood-trained runners.

Also watch for Hes Relentless. Racing for TomMaher, Johnny Cope and R.D. Hubbard, the currentowner of Ruidoso and known among Thoroughbredrans as the man who bred and/or raced the likes ofStravinsky and Gentlemen (Arg), Hes Relentless ransecond in the Heritage Place Futurity. He's entered intoday's eighth race. TVG will be airing the trials today and tomorrow, andwill have the All American Futurity final on Sept. 2. Byron Rogers--In response to Jason Litt (8/13): Jason Litt raised some interesting points in his letterto the editor on Beyer speed figures. One of the more pertinent of those was the allusionto the almost cult-like devotion that commercialbreeders and owners display with regard to using Beyer(and other speed figures), as a proxy for genetic merit, and the impact this has on sales on the basis of thesenumbers. Peer-reviewed heritability studies published haverepeatedly shown that time, and measures based ontime, like Beyer Speed figures, have a low degree ofheritability. Or to put it another way, there is very lowcorrelation in performance as a racehorse whenexpressed as a speed figure, and performance as abreeding animal. A peak Beyer figure--such as the 118 for Smarty Jones, and 98 for Tapit, indicating adifference of around 10 lengths--might be important interms of handicapping, but the contrasting performanceof the two at stud is a fair illustration of the usefulnessof a speed figure as an indicator of potential breedingperformance. So, if a stallion owner tells you a stallionran a 120 Beyer speed figure, or a consignor selling amare tells you she ran a -1 on the sheets, with regardto the individual's stud potential, it is next tomeaningless noise and should be treated as such.
