University of Nebraska system President Hank Bounds says the challenge is stark. “We have a $49 million budget challenge to address over the course of the next biennium,” Bounds tells Nebraska Radio Network. A reduction in state funding by the Unicameral combined with an increase in costs have created the $49 million budget shortfall, according to Bounds. He and chancellors from the various NU campuses have announced changes designed to close the budget gap. Bounds says virtually every em- ployee will be impacted. Special teams on each campus made various suggestions to the chancellors and Bounds; some adopted, others re- jected, a few put on hold. SUNDAY COLLEGE PROGRAM Mid-Plains Community College will offer five classes this fall as part of its Sunday College program. The classes are: College Algebra, Intro to Professional Education, English Composition I, English Composition II and Intro to Theater. All begin Aug. 20. Sunday College gives students an opportunity to fulfill general education requirements in just eight weeks and obtain an associate degree within 24 months. Classes meet Sun- day afternoons and evenings. The rest of the coursework is done online making the option a convenient one for students who work or are otherwise occupied during the day. The on-campus component is of- fered through classrooms in McCook and North Platte and via distance learning at MPCC campuses in Broken Bow, Imperial, Ogallala and Valentine. All Sunday College classes are designated as “academic transfer,” which means they should be accepted for academic credit at any regional college or university. More information about the Sunday College program can be found on the college’s website at http:// www.mpcc.edu/sunday-college .

SPORTS Right-hander Jeremy Hellickson, making his first start for the Orioles

since being acquired from the Phillies on Friday, threw seven strong

innings in a 6-0 victory over the Royals on Wednesday night at Camden

Yards. The Orioles won their fifth straight by sweeping the three-game

series. "Last night, I had some nerves. But once I got out there, I felt

fine," Hellickson said. "I've been traded before, just not in season to a

team that is playing as well as we are, that has a chance to make the

playoffs. So, just a little nervous last night, but I felt really good today."

The game was delayed 35 minutes by rain. "Jeremy's always had that

presentation from both dugouts. Not a whole lot seems to bother him.

He's always been pretty consistent with his emotions, it seems like,"

Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. The Royals kick off a four-game

series with Seattle tonight. Pregame coverage on The Big Talker 1300

KBRL-AM starts at 6:30 p.m.

Home games against seven postseason qualifiers highlight Nebraska’s

2017-18 Big Ten opponents. The slate includes home tilts with NCAA

qualifiers Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin at Pinnacle Bank

Arena along with visits from NIT qualifiers Indiana, Illinois and Iowa. As

part of the Big Ten’s schedule rotation, five teams (Illinois, Minnesota,

Penn State, Rutgers and Wisconsin) will serve as NU’s double-play oppo-

nents this season. The Huskers will face those five teams both in Lincoln

and on the road. In addition, all four of NU’s home single-play home

opponents reached postseason play last year, including Big Ten postsea-

son champion Michigan, along with Maryland, Iowa and Indiana. NU’s

single-play road opponents feature a trip to Big Ten regular-season

champion Purdue, along with treks to Michigan State, Northwestern and

Ohio State. In all, 13 of NU’s 18 Big Ten games will be against postseason

qualifiers from last season. The Big Ten had seven 2017 NCAA Tourna-

ment qualifiers (Maryland, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, North-

western, Purdue and Wisconsin), including three teams that reached the

NCAA Sweet 16.

QUOTE OF THE DAY “

“Sometimes you need to sit lonely on the floor in a quiet room in order to hear your

own voice and not let it drown in the noise

of others.” ~Charlotte Eriksson~
