Government Affairs Committee - With the number of possible boycotts by candidates and the possible sanctions from the Republican National Committee, Nevada’s Republican Caucus has been moved again. It will now be held on February 4th, 2012 which leaves us about 2 months before an-other election. As mentioned last month, your GAC will do their best to notify you of any candidates that come through Elko. I will do my best to put notices on the GAC webpage at http://elkonevada.com/index.php?option=com_docman&Itemid=110. Be on the lookout for our 2012 Preview where we bring industry and government leaders together to discuss what’s in store for 2012. As always, our meetings are open to the public and are held upstairs at Stockmen’s at 12:00 noon on the Mondays preceding Elko City Council meetings. Come on over and sit in on one of the meetings. 9th Annual Snowflake FestivalThe 9th Annual Snowflake Festival will be on Saturday, December 10. Festivities will begin at 1 p.m. As part of the fun this year, there will be horse drawn carriage rides, Polar Express train rides, ice sculptures, in-store specials in all of the downtown shops, live entertainment, and as always - food! The Parade of Lights will begin at 5:30, followed by a fireworks display. All of the activities and fun will be in the heart of Downtown Elko! We hope to see you all there!

Ruby Mountain Balloon FestivalThe Ruby Mountain Balloon Association has announced the dates for the 11th Annual Ruby Mountain Balloon Festival, September 21st to the 23rd, 2012. The Festival is organized each year by the Associa-tion which is a nonprofit organization made up of several volunteers and additional members throughout Nevada, Arizona, California, Oregon, Utah, and Washington. The commonality among these members is their love of hot air ballooning, the desire to have a fun filled and safe balloon festival, and to share the experience of ballooning with members of the community. The activities of the Festival will include balloon flights from both Elko and Spring Creek, a night glow, and flights from Spring Creek Sports Park. We anticipate at least 35 beautiful balloons next year. An additional activity is held on September 20, where several pilots are selected to take the balloons to local schools and present a program on the history of ballooning and the science of balloon flight. As we enter our second decade for the balloon festival, we are looking for support for the balloon festival. If you would like more information or would like to be involved in the organization of the balloon festival, please go to our website, www.rubymoun-tainballoonfestival.com or contact one of the association members. In order to honor our POWs, MIAs, and our local veterans, the POW/MIA Balloon has agreed to attend our festival in 2012. Since this bal-loon is a privately owned balloon we will have to pay the expenses for the balloon and the pilot to attend our festival. We have raised over half of the required funds so naturally, we are looking for any additional contributions. Why Shop LocalAs you are all aware, shopping local is not only important to our members but for the overall commu-nity. We have asked local officials and residents for their thoughts on why they believe shopping local is important. Please take a minute to read, share and remember that not only do Chamber Checks make great gifts, but they have kept over $6.5 million dollars in our local economy. I believe it is important for the local community to keep their dollars in Elko and support the local business for many reasons. First and foremost is who do we all turn to when we are looking for spon-sorships for various events and activities? That’s right, the local business owners. Second, most business owners are on an event committee or volunteer their time, support, or employees at local events. This is a huge contribution for our community. I would hope that everyone will take into consideration all of the support that local organizations receive from the community businesses and support them as they are often asked to support the community. ~Don Newman, ECVA

The biggest thing is follow-up service after the sale. Most people want to be able to have the store that they purchased from be able to take care of any problems that might happen. We also guarantee our prices so there is little worry about paying too much. We don’t buy anything out of town that we can get here. A small percent of the population will drive 500 miles to save 10 dollars, but most people just want a fair deal with the least amount of hassle; and knowledgeable, friendly sales people. ~Glen Gut-try, Elko County

Shop Elko any time possible, it makes a tremendous difference for the merchants to warrant inventory levels and offer better prices. Shopping in Elko provides revenue for the school district, county, and cit-ies. Those revenues are used to improve infrastructure for all. ~Chris Johnson, City of Elko

Shopping local keeps our economy healthy and our businesses strong. Shopping local will attract ad-ditional retail and commercial business to the area, particularly when there are success stories like the Grand Opening of Joann’s out-selling all other areas where stores opened. ~Pam Borda, ECEDA

The obvious reason to shop local is that as we support local businesses they thrive and grow, increasing employment and quality of life for residents of the area. Governmental services are funded in Carlin by taxable sales revenues. The greater our source of revenue the better the quality of service the City can provide to the public. From a business perspective, if we want to truly attract the larger retailers to the area, they have to feel that we will not travel as freely to other cities to shop. As long as we travel regu-larly to Twin Falls, Reno, Salt Lake, and Boise, retailers feel no compulsion to relocate to the Elko area. If the customers are coming to you, there is no reason to go to the customers. Finally, by supporting local businesses and enticing retailers to the area, we increase competition. Stonecraft JewelersI want to talk a bit about fine jewelry and “popping the question.” The Holiday season is fast approach-ing and is one of the most popular times to give the gift of jewelry. As the owner of Stonecraft Jewelers and a Master Goldsmith, I have had the pleasure to share in this moment for over twenty five years. When a man comes into Stonecraft, many times the look is the same, a bit of fear and the “oh my, some-one tell me what she will love.” I have always looked at the situation as “I trust you, help me!” Selecting a beautiful scintillating diamond and master crafted setting is what it is about. Not at my store! It is only the beginning; next is more important. Let me explain: the days of just dropping to one knee and saying “Will you marry me?” have become much more exciting. My job is to help you discover “your” way to “Pop the Question.” Believe it or not, most men have become much more romantic these days, especially the younger ones. I see it every day when a wedding ring is brought in for repair; the woman across the counter can tell me what he said, how he shook, and that cute look he had as he proposed. Guys remem-ber if she said yes and thanked the heavens above she did! I am minimizing this a bit but you get the general idea. A friend of mine, Dave Richardson, wrote a great book called “Memorable Ways to Pop the Question.” It is filled with wonderful stories of how people have “Popped the Question.” Whether you are giving an engagement ring or a pair of earrings for Christmas the ideas can be molded to make the moment special. One other great point is some people don’t know how to receive the gift of jewelry. Of-ten you hear “Oh, I don’t deserve it”, or “I can’t wear that, everyone will notice me”, “It’s too big!” Here is what you do: throw you arms around him, share a big kiss and say “I love it!” and “Thank you!” Mark my words, if you do this, you will get more wonderful jewelry in the days to come. As we soar into the holiday season quicker than most of us are prepared for, it’s achallenge to keep up with all that is demanded of us. For most businesses, winter is a slow but crucial time. Keep it local: It is one of every small business owner’s pleas. Consumers tend to shrug a shoulder at the product prices in a small business, almost as if challenged to find it elsewhere for a better deal. The next time you begin to raise an eyebrow at a price tag, just remember it’s your community. Take a look at all the potential benefits of keeping your money local. Money spent at local independently owned busi-nesses stays in the community. Your local businesses will purchase more of their needed items locally as well, thus supporting other businesses. Did you know that local businesses are 250% more likely to support local community groups and organizations? When a local business does well and grows from your support, their growth will create a demand for more help, which provides job opportunities for others in our community. Over the long term, supporting local will help control the cost of goods. Too many of us will rationalize good deals in Reno, Twin Falls, or Salt Lake City, disregarding the fact that with gas and meals the cost of your goods is actually significantly more. In Elko, most shops and restaurants are centrally located and are just a short drive, unlike large metropolitan areas. Purchasing local also lends to stability. When you invest in the local business owner, you are instilling confidence and ensuring the longevity of their business. That kind of stability is attractive and can ensure new small business owners will settle in Elko. Keeping your money local will also allow you to get to know your community business owners and learn more about the products and services they provide. They will be more willing to teach and educate you about the products they sell and stand behind their customer service because their livelihood depends on it. Long term, hundreds of small businesses will drive competitive prices, innovation, and customer service beyond that of any national sales plan. Spending local stimulates what you like instead of what a corporation says you should like. What a unique concept leading to a unique community. Your local small business truly is the heart of Elko. Spending your money locally is a sure way to invest in and build this wonderful community. Think twice when you go to spend your money. Can you get it here locally?
