DONN DRAWS 10 (cont. from p1) AWe=ve wanted to give him a go on the dirt for a littlewhile, trainer Jeremy Noseda said. AWe thought aboutgoing to Dubai for the [G1] Maktoum Challenge and, then discussing it with [owner] Paul Roy, decided we=dsort of take a different route and have a go in America.I had to look at races that would suit him, and if you=regoing to come this far and the expense that goes alongwith it, you have to go for something that has a decentpurse. Yes, the competition is going to be harder butit=s something that=s worthwhile.@ Conditioner Todd Pletcher will send out three fromhis barn in J “TDN Rising Star” J Constitution(Tapit), Commissioner (A.P. Protonico, winner of the GIII Smarty Jones S.,annexed the GIII Discovery H. at Aqueduct Nov. 1before finishing a half-length behind Hoppertunity (AnyGiven Saturday) in the Clark. DR. TED FOLKERTH: When folks of integrity in the thoroughbred industrylike Fred Seitz, John Gosden, and Greg Ferraro DVMspeak out to abolish race-day medication, I am troubledby those who feel it is necessary to administerintravenous race day medications for a perceivedadvantage. I have been a breeder for over 32 years anda practicing cardiac surgeon for over 40 years and it isincomprehensible to think that race-day medication willimprove the breed. Clearly, the pendulum has swungfor serious breeders to seek breeding stock fromcountries that do not allow race-day medication. It ispast time for the formation of a national organizationwith uniform rule enforcement that is consistent withcountries in Asia, Europe Australia and South Africa. I applaud the three gentlemen mentioned above and, hopefully, their comments and commitment will be aseminal collection of learned study to lead to a newdirection for the thoroughbred industry.

TBA PRESIDENT DEFENDS BREEDINGINDUSTRY Basil Nolan, president of Thoroughbred BreedersAustralia, has thrown his support behind the country=sbreeders and stud farms in the wake of a positivesteroid test from last month=s Magic Millions GoldCoast Yearling Sale. A colt sold at the sale testedpositive for altrenogist, a substance found in Regu-Mate, which regulates cycles and maintainspregnancies in fillies and mares, but it is being debatedwhether Regu-Mate belongs on the list of bannedsteroids devised by the Australian Racing Board and thePrincipal Racing Association last May. Regu-Mate ispermitted for fillies and mares on raceday, but not formales; however, it is sometimes used on stud farmsand at sales to modify studish behaviour. "This is not an anabolic steroid and should neverhave been placed on the banned list,@ Nolan said in arelease. "The TBA has no problem with testing foranabolic steroids, but we have a grave concern that ayearling has tested positive to a drug that=s commonlyused on studs and at sales throughout Australia. It isnot performance or growth enhancing, which is why itis not prohibited in fillies and mares. Ultimately, this isnot an anabolic steroid.@ Nolan pointed to the fact that the environments atraces and sales differ greatly. At the sales, young coltsand fillies are expected to stand in their boxes for up totwo weeks. cont. p10

AThe races and sales are poles apart, and that shouldhave been considered before the Australian RacingBoard and Principal Racing Association placedaltrenogest on the banned list,@ he said. Nolan noted there was a lack of consultation with thebreeding industry when Australia=s anabolic steroidsrules were put into place. AIt was simply policy on the run--it was not thoughtthrough at all and now we are paying the price. Ourindustry is now being ridiculed with aspersions that allthese yearlings are being doped. It=s totally unfair andthe breeding industry is rightly up-in-arms,@ he said. The Australian Racing Board is currently reviewingthe situation and has said Regu-Mate may be removedfrom the banned list.

>RED= THE GIFT THAT KEEPS ON GIVING FORNICHOLSON One man who has more tales from the heath to tellthan most is Steve Nicholson. As the work rider of RedCadeaux (GB) (Cadeaux Genereux {GB}), Nicholson=sface has become well known during his travels aroundthe world with his much-loved charge. Now entering his 37th year of duty in Newmarket, the 52-year-old won=t see much of the town this springas he is once again packing his bags to head south withRed Cadeaux, this time for The Championships in

Sydney. Confirmationof this trip earlier inthe week was greetedwith delight by RedCadeaux=s many fansin Australia, where hisbattling performancesin the Melbourne Cup--in which he hasfinished second in2011, 2013 and2014--have made himsomething of a

national hero, albeit one with an internationalbackground. AI daren=t wear my jacket with Red Cadeaux=s nameon when I go out in Australia as I get stopped in thestreet all the time,@ said Nicholson. AI was in thesupermarket once while I was wearing it and it took meages to do my shopping as people kept wanting to talkto me about him.@ It=s not a bad problem to have, and together the duo--with a collective age of 61--has clocked up some airmiles. This will be their fifth trip to Australia, and RedCadeaux has also raced in Hong Kong, Japan, Dubai,Singapore and Ireland. With six full seasons and 48starts under his belt, he is just shy of completing 80racing miles on the track.

It was back in 1983 that Nicholson started hisglobetrotting with racehorses when he accompaniedthe Ben Hanbury-trained Coquito=s Friend to Sweden towin the Stockholm Cup. AI came to Newmarket in 1978 and have onlychanged jobs once,@ recalled Nicholson, an apprenticejockey in his early days in the town. AI worked for BenHanbury for seven or eight years then went to work forOlivier Douieb, who had several different yards at thetime with horses for Mahmoud Fustok and quite a lot ofbig American owners. In December 1985, SheikhMaktoum Al Maktoum bought Fustok out and we wereall moved en masse to what became known as OakStables.@ During his time with Douieb, Nicholson was assignedto the talented Group 1 winner Lead On Time, wholater took up stud duties at Haras du Quesnay. AHe was a Nureyev colt out of a Lorenzaccio mare, and he was the most expensive horse bought in Europeat the time at 1.4 million guineas because the sale=stop-priced filly, who cost 1.6 million guineas and wasby Artaius, failed her wind test and was returned,@ hestates with clarity 30 years after the event. This kind of

detail is common inNicholson=s reflections, which consistently includesire and damsire of the allthe memorable horses withwhich he=s been involved. He continues, ALead OnTime was the first goodhorse I looked after and Itraveled a bit with him toFrance. As a 3-year-old hebeat older horses easily inthe Prix Maurice de Gheest, but then shortly after thathe pulled up lame aftergalloping one morning.Sheikh Maktoum had areserve for the big VernonsSprint [now known as theG1 Haydock Sprint Cup] atthe time and that was Green

Desert, who ended up winning it. That shows howmuch they thought of Lead On Time if Green Desertcould be his understudy. Later on I used to ride hisbrother, Great Commotion.@

Despite having only changed jobs once, Nicholsonhas had three different bosses since his move toDouieb. Following that trainer=s return to France, hisassistant Alex Scott took command of the stable. Scottwas at the helm for just six years until one of the mostshocking events in recent Newmarket history saw theyoung trainer shot dead by the stud groom at his GlebeStud just outside the town. In his stable at the timewas an unraced 2-year-old by the name of Lammtarra, who would go on to win the Derby, the King Georgeand the Arc in a short but brilliant career. Nicholson said, AI rode Lammtarra as a 2-year-old,then what happened to Alex happened. In fact, our lastwinner the day before he died was Fraam, who was byLead On Time. He won the Joel S. at Newmarket andAlex was over the moon that day.@ During his time with Scott, Nicholson made his firstvisit to America with a filly named Furajet in 1991.He added, AWhile I was in the barn in California, one ofthe grooms took me over to show me his horse who hesaid was something special. He was just a 2-year-old atthe time but it was A. P. Indy, and I=ve followed himever since. Apart from Red Cadeaux he=s my favoritehorse of all time.@ A foreshadow of the bond Nicholson wouldeventually strike with Red Cadeaux also came in hisdays working for Scott, who trained his sire CadeauxGenereux. AWhen Alex took over at the yard, Cadeaux Genereuxwas four. I loved riding him, he was such a goodsprinter--he won the [G1] July Cup in record time, beating Danehill--but you=d never believe it riding him in

the morning. I used tostruggle to get him upLong Hill.@ When Scott=sassistant Ed Dunlopassumed responsibilityat Oak Stables--laterrenamed GainsboroughStables--Nicholsonremained in place andhas enjoyed plenty offoreign visits sincethat time, includingwith another of his

former partners, the dual Oaks winner Lailani (GB)(Unfuwain). AI went to Belmont with Lailani when she won the[GI] Flower Bowl, and it was a bit of a surreal time tobe in New York as it was just two weeks after 9/11.@ AI was also out in Dubai with several horses for thefirst Carnival, so before Red came along I=d been almosteverywhere apart from Australia,@ he said. With owner Ronald Arculli having settled on Australiaover Dubai, next Friday Nicholson, along with colleagueRobin Trevor-Jones, will return there with Red Cadeauxto complete quarantine back at the familiar Werribeecomplex in Victoria, where the international horses arestabled for Melbourne=s Spring Carnival.

His initial target is the 10-furlong G1 DarleyAustralian Cup on his favored left-hand course atFlemington Mar. 14, in which he could meet his mostrecent Melbourne Cup conqueror, Protectionist (Ger)(Monsun {Ger}). All being well, he will then head northto Sydney, where his ultimate Championships target isundecided but will be either the G1 Queen Elizabeth IIS. or G1 Sydney Cup at Randwick Apr. 11.

Nicholson isapproaching the tripwith a mixture ofexcitement andapprehension, thelatter stemming fromhis protective feelingstowards the horse herates above all othersin his career. He said, ARed is sowell liked in Australiaand I wouldn=t like tosee him go out there

and not run his race for some reason, but once he getsto Werribee he does seem to come alive. He loves itthere and charges out to the track each day.@ He added, AHe gets lots of individual attention whenhe=s there which I think he enjoys. I always go back tosee him about 9 p.m. and give him an apple and put hisrug on. He probably gets a bit spoiled, really, but he=swhat we=re there for and he=s taken me all around theworld so he deserves it.@

Nicholson continued, AHe=s easily my favorite horse ofall time. He may not be a regular winner but he=s justsuch a lovely character--and his dad was a lovely horseas well. He was totally laidback.@ After a winter break at Longholes Stud, Red Cadeauxwas back at Dunlop=s La Grange Stables for a fewweeks and Nicholson=s opinion is, Ahe feels good.@ He continued, AI=d be the first one to say finish him ifhe ran two or three bad races in a row with conditionsin his favor, but he always seems to pull something outof the bag and at the moment he=s moving betterbehind than he=s ever moved.@ While many work riders would doubtless be thrilled toswap Newmarket=s current arctic conditions for awarmer spell in Australia, Nicholson maintains, however, that it=s a time of the year he enjoys on theHeath. AWhen I=ve been away in the winter in Dubai I havemissed seeing the2-year-olds change athome, and some ofthe geese start to turninto swans,@ he said.AIt=s a great time of theyear in Newmarket aswe start to gear uptowards the start ofthe Flat season, so Iwill miss that a bit thisyear but I can=tcomplain really.@ One thing he willalso miss is the chanceof a big night out atthe Godolphin Studand Stable StaffAwards in London Feb.23. He is on theshortlist of three forthe Rider/GroomAward, but should he be successful, one of hiscolleagues will have to receive his prize for him. AI didn't really want to be nominated and the bossdidn't tell me he was doing it but it=s obviously anhonor to be recognized,@ he said modestly. One of the aforementioned 2-year-olds Nicholson willbe particularly keen to check up on when he returns isRed Cadeaux=s Teofilo (Ire) half-brother, who iscurrently under his care. The bay colt will eventually race in the same red andblue silks, having been bought by Arculli as a foal for220,000gns. AI don=t ride him but I look after him and everyoneseems pleased with him so far,@ said Nicholson. Asked whether he envisages a similar internationalcampaign for the youngster, he replied with a grin, AIfhe lasts as long as Red Cadeaux I=ll probably be retiredby then, but let=s hope he=s worth sticking around for.@

LAKE SUSPENDED FOR 120 DAYSBy Mike Kane Veteran trainer Scott Lake was assessed asuspension of 120 days--twice what was originallyreported--by the Maryland Racing Commission as theresult of horses in his care testing positive for ananabolic steroid. Mike Hopkins, the MRC=s executive director, saidWednesday that the commission had clarified thepenalties handed to Lake. Hopkins said that Lakereceived a 60-day suspension, which begins Thursday, for the positive for stanozolol in races in December atLaurel. The Maryland positive and penalty coupled with aprevious positive in Pennsylvania pushed Lake over apoints threshold in the Multiple Medication ViolationPenalty System, automatically adding a second 60-daysuspension. The suspensions must be servedconsecutively, producing a four-month ban. Maryland has adopted the National UniformMedication Program, which Includes additionalsanctions for multiple violations. Maryland trainer Hector Garcia also received a stiffersuspension, 13 months, for his three stanozololpositives and a fourth for the sedative xylazine, according to the multiple medication violationguidelines. Garcia was filling in for trainer JuanVazquez, who was serving a 90-day suspension for analtercation at Delaware Park.
