DIRECTORS' REPORTFcflors Mwafcm.

We have pleasure ia submitting for your approval and adoption the Report and Brdance Sheet for the Half Year ended

29th March. 1947.

(c) Salsa—During the Half Year the Cash Sales amounted to 8958,437 14s. 9d. , this being an increase of f105,584 19s. 6d..as 'compared with the conesponding period of last year. The fuel cuts and consequent intederence with production have retarded

the rate of increase'in several departments. Nevertheless. the Furnishing Departmentfinished with an increase of 55 per cent, and

the dothing and footwear*parbnents also show substantial increases. The only departments to show decreases were the Bread

Bakery, owing to the termination of thc army contract, and thc Cafe. 1

(6) Menabetsbip. —During the six months 1,239 new members were admitted and 648 accounts were dosed owing to removals

and vnthdrawals. leaving a membership of 34,641 on 29th March, 1947.1

(c) Balance Dsposabla. —After meeting all charges and allowing %5,797 for depreciation of Buildings, Fixtures, ftc., and f

fl19~ to meet Interest on Members' Shares, them remains a surplus of X60,659, We reconunend that Dividend be paid on Members'

pirrcbases at thc rate of Is. 6ck in the 8, a grant of fl577 be made for educational purposes, and thc balance of approximately 8400

confed forwarrl

It should be noted that tha accounts disdose the full aflect of the new wages rates, thc Ninth War Bonus aad the increased

N ' Imturance contributions, which as pomted out in our last Half-Yearly Rcport, amount to thc equivalent of a dividend of

3jb ffstlgi'fle It will also be noted that the Society's contribution to the Superannuation Fund was 85635 7s. 6d., equivalent

.pr"' '."taW"' ' '" efneifly2d. in the fl. An additional burden during the period under review was thc unusually tuunry amount of

overtime which had to be paid owing to the reduction of the basic hours to 44 per week, and to the delays and ditflcuities caused

by the snow and floods.

(d) Wragby Branch. —This Branch was opened on 4th January. 1947. and has been wefl supported by our membem in that

district, the sales being 8170 per week.

(r) Snow and Floods.—The long spell of snow in January and February upset the normal schedule of sever'af departments.

Many incidents were reported of delays and breakdowns, but in the main our food services were kept going. The biggest burden

wss borne by the coslworkers, who were called upon to carry coal under conditions never before experienced. In spite of afl the

eflorts. which were made, deliveries feB in arrears, the position being complicated by the large number of members who wished tofetch extra coal after havmg used their allocation, and the large number of licences for extra coal issued by thc Fuel Offlces.

After tbe snow came the floods. The Society's Dairy was completely surrounded by water for eighteen days, but~tba Dairy 08ioes and messroom were flooded and had to be evacuated, tha water was kept from autermg tbp boibxhouse by:abarrier of board and clay, aad the work of pasteurising and bottlirig was continuerh Three''gjr'ocmy sbdps'wsra abo afbm(ed. by.the floods. LINCOLN SOCIETY CO-OPERATIVE PARTY

REPORT FOR YEAR ENDING 29th MARCH, 1947.

Felless Members,

We have pleasure in presenting a report of the activities of the Lincoln Society Co-operative Party during the year.

On 4th Mey, 1946, (Labour Day) we took part in Labour Day celebrations on the South Common. Mrs. M. Ridaalgh,

operative Labour M.P., Ilford North, gave an address on the work of the Co-operative Party.

In conjunction with the Labour Party and Trades Council arrangements are now being made for this year's celebrations.

Mr. J. Bailey (General Secretary), Co-operative Party, has accepted an invitation to speak on our behalf.

Three: propiganda meetings have been held during the year, at which the speakers were: Mr. C. A. Shepherd (National

Orgauiser); Alderman G. Deer, Labour M.P., Lincoln: and Mr. S. Tiffany, Co-operative Labour M.P., Peterborough. In

expressing our thanks to tbe speakers for their services. we regret that attendanccs were disappointing.

Twu social evenings have been organised and these proved very enjoyable to our members.

, %hi', Party has been represented at political schools at Bangor and Stanford Hall, and delegates have brought back good reports

of the political work of the Cetesperative Party.

During the year the new National Agreement between the Labour Party and the Coesperative Party came into being. and in

an effort tn increase unity between the two bodies locally, alBIiation has been approved by the Gcncral Committee.

Individual membership has increased during the year, but many more new 'and interested members are needed if the Party

is to be a success and exercise its inffuence both locally and nationally.

Eleven Executive Committee and three General Council Meetings have been held during the year.

Subscriptions for 1947 are now due.

For and on behalf of the Executive Committee,

G L BROOKE, Chairman.

A. MARSTON, Secretary.

EDUCATION COMMITTEE REPORT

for Half-Year Ended 27th September 1947.

Fcffoso.Coepcrctors,

Your Committee have pleasure in submitting their rkport for the Half Year ended 27th September, 1947,

With reference to personnel of the Committee we congratulate Mrs. D. M. Dixon upon her election as Secretary of the District

Women'sCsuifd Committee, and we are sony to lose, but extend our compliments to, Mr. S.T:Buttery upon hi's ekction to the Board.

The past Half Year bas berm an extremely difficult one as a result of very limited 6'n'anctal resources, in consequence of which

a stringcnt economy has bad to be exercised. with a frustration of many of our intentions. Our DEVELOPMENT PLAN, as published

in the previous Balance Sheet. is therefore impeded except in three cases as reported hereunder.

Coerpcmtive Arts Theatre GuilrL —This adult Drama Group was established during the uuamer, but was temporarily closed

for thc holiday season. lt will bc reopened in October under a ncw Producer and will be on a sounder basis.

Woodcraft Folk—A branch of this National Co-opmative Yeuth Organisation was inaugurated on 16th September, when the

meeting was addressed by Henry Fair, National Folk Organiser, and over 70 young people enroBed. The group will have to be

subdivided, but the main probkm is Leadership.

Children's Harvest Camp. —This was a very successful venture that we undertook in conjunction with the Kesteven WA.EGOver 120 children attended and gave valuable harvest help to farmers in the locality of Welbourn. Several letters of appreciation

and testimonials have been received from parents, farmers and the Agricultural Committee. Further the camp was not an end in

itself: the development of the Woodcraft Folk is a consequence. Our thanks arc due to all who assisted. and to the Society for thc

use of a camp site at their Welbourn farm.

Choral Association. —This section of our activities has now been reorganised, and a new Conductor will be appointecL

The Junior Choir participated in the Midland Co-operative Junior Fesuval at Leicester in'May, but wss not among the awards.

The Senior Choir were awarded a shield in one dass at the Cfeethorpes Festival this summer. Our best wishes are extended to

Mr. A. W; Farrar upon his relinquishment of the Conductorship.

' Sick Appliances. —Many members have avaikd themselves of the facilities, but at present a subconmnttee is in the process of

revising the charges for hire of appliances.

tsterature. —Sales are fairly good, but more members should become readers of co-operative publications. During the Half Year

we have introduced the chi1dren's monthly magazine Oer Ctrrfe (now 3d.), and sales are over eight dozen copies per issue.

Technical'Education. —This is otganised for ctnpfoyces by a Joint Tcchnical Education Committee (omwisting of two members

from the Board of Directors and two from the Education Committee), with the Education Secretary as Secretary of that Commiuee.

There hss been a splendid response by employees to enrolments for Correspondence Courses.

Cooperative Education, nationally, is now being given the~and status it deserves; therefore, we aslr. for your support

and encouragement so that we cana~ im~ in our local efforts. Tbe hpootanm of ~pcrative education remains

paranmunt in spite of the i~ devckpmcnt of state edueatirm. fur the success of our Movement depends almost entire/ upon

a virile ~p that is welf hdonned upon comparative affairs. and is consciously ealightened upon the objectives for which

we strive.

Forfend

on behalf of the Committee, '

R. H. BROWN, Chairman.

ft C CLODF Secretary.
