Hi Folks.

We've got a really exciting week here at Nighttown!

First, on Wednesday, we have one of the all-time great fusion and contemporary jazz artists, Jeff Lorber,bringing his group Jeff Lorber Fusion featuring Jimmy Haslip on bass. They have a brand new recordout on the Concord label (major label) titled "Step It Up". This is a "Don't Miss" concert.

Then on Thursday, we have a great World Music show with Alasdair Fraser from Scotland on fiddle,along with Natalie Haas on cello. Natalie is a graduate from Oberlin. These two together make agorgeous blend of music that is not to be missed.

Then on Friday, we have locally based and Havana born guitar phenom Justo Saborit & Latin Soul. Areally fun energetic show.

Nighttown Student Discount PolicyStudents up to age 26 are 1/2 off the regular price. Jeff Lorber Fusion, whose previous release Hacienda was praised for its “impeccablemusicianship and deep grooves” by JazzTimes and its “funky, rollicking jams” by AllAbout Jazz, returns on September 25, 2015, with Step It Up on Heads Up, a division ofConcord Music Group. The fourth consecutive collaboration between GRAMMY®-nominated keyboardist/composer/producer Jeff Lorber and GRAMMY®-winningbassist/composer/ producer Jimmy Haslip since the two virtuosos reactivated Jeff LorberFusion five years ago, Step It Up features 11 new Lorber compositions, several co-writtenwith Haslip. The longtime colleagues also co-produced the recording.

The title Step It Up, says Lorber, “reflects the music: optimistic, energetic and an attemptto ‘step up’ our game—our compositions, production and improvisation—to the next level.This record puts us back in a more familiar Jeff Lorber Fusion groove while we exploresome new uncharted areas.”

“We were motivated to find a new direction following Hacienda,” adds Haslip. “That onewas a full-on experimental recording. Step It Up is more inside the Jeff Lorber Fusion boxbut has some new and interesting twists.”

“I’m always writing new stuff and I got together with Jimmy to play him some of themusic I was working on,” says Lorber. “My compositions were a bit diverse and Jimsuggested focusing more. We came up with the idea of ’70s modal jazz.” Inspired by theclassic recordings of such greats as Freddie Hubbard, Herbie Hancock, Lee Morgan, JoeHenderson and Weather Report, Lorber and Haslip followed their collective muse, drawingconceptually from the influential output of those legends but filtering it all through theirown sensibilities—several of the co-written tunes developed directly out of bass partsHaslip had created.

Both Lorber and Haslip are quick to heap praise upon the other for his vital contributionsto the final product. With decades of expertise between them in every area of composing,playing and recording, they know each other’s strengths inside out. “I’m more of a detailguy and Jimmy is more of a big picture guy,” says Lorber, who plays Fender Rhodes,Moog, mini-Moog and piano on the album. “He helps a lot with figuring out whichmusicians we might call to complement and develop the songs (in this case Bob Mintzerand Robben Ford).”

Adds Haslip, “Jeff and I have really good chemistry and we have a lot in common with alove of many different styles of music. So together, we form a strong, positive union ofideas and creative energy.”

Never has that chemistry been more evident than on Step It Up. Where they will headnext from here is anybody’s guess, but both Jeff and Jimmy are excited about thepossibilities. Says Lorber, “I think the direction we’ve charted out from the last fewrecords and this one is a creative, positive one. These records have been about combiningthe old and new, taking the original Jeff Lorber Fusion sound of funky fusion with bebopand R&B elements and reaching both forward and backward to explore new territory.There’s a renewed sense of exploration, harmonic and melodic adventure and jazziness.The idea of fusion seems fresh again.”

Master Scottish fiddler Alasdair Fraser is a consummate performer. Natalie Haas is one of the most sought after cellists playing traditional music today.She and Scottish fiddler Alasdair Fraser have toured as a duo for over 12 years,wowing audiences at festivals and concerts worldwide with their unique sound.Their first album together, Fire & Grace, was awarded Best Album of the Year inthe Scots Trad Music Awards 2004. Natalie has also toured with Mark O'Connor as amember of his Appalachia Waltz Trio. She and O'Connor premiered his doubleconcerto for violin and cello, ¨For The Heroes¨, with the Grand Rapids, East Texas,and San Diego Symphonies. As a studio musician, Natalie has been a guest artiston over 50 albums, including those of Cape Breton fiddler Natalie MacMaster andIrish super-group Solas.

They were the first group to win the NYCFringe Festival’s top honor for a play two years in a row (2010/11) and have goneon to win IRNE (2012, 2015) and Jeff Awards (2014) for their theatrical productions.

North Coast Violinist leads Quartet at Nighttown! Featuring:Reed Simon-violin, Dan Maier-piano, Kevin Johnson-acousticbass, & Donnie Patterson-drums.From age 8, Reed was trained in the Russian classical violin tradition where hegrew up in Montclair, New Jersey. In high school he began listening to StephaneGrappelli and Joe Venuti. In 1977 he moved to Cleveland to study art at theCleveland Institute of Art. It was there that he decided to continue to keep playingand seek out jazz musicians to jam with. His search led me him sit in with some ofCleveland greatest jazz legends including saxophonist Hank Geer and pianist BillGidney. Around 1982 he collaborated with jazz violinist Bud Pickard, who playedfrequently with pianist George Foley at Nighttown. During the 1984 Tri-C Jazz Fest,trumpeter Kenny Davis asked him to join him and a few musicians for a jamsession led by vibraphonist Gary Burton. In the early 1990s, Reed was asked bythen director of the Northeast Ohio Jazz Society’s director John Richmond to playthe Ray Nance violin solo for a Severance Hall performance of Duke Ellington’slong form “A Drum is a Woman”. It was there he met and worked with a couple ofDuke Ellington’s original band members; percussionist Candido and singer JoyaSherrill. Since then, Reed has appeared in many of Cleveland's top jazz venuesincluding Night Town, The Boarding House, Club Isabella, The Inn at Turner's Mill,The Theatrical, Peabody's Down Under, the Raintree and the original Bop Stop,Drinko Recital Hall, The Historic St. Peter Church's concert series where hedirected “Jazz and the Spirit”. Most recently, Reed has been seen in the ClevelandAkron area with the band “Hot Djang!”, a Stephane Grappelli and DjangoReinhardt tribute band, the rock band “Uzizi”, the Akron based gypsy jazz band“Moustach Yourself”, “Gene’s Jazz Hot” and as a duo with pianist Dan Maier.

Reed attributes his music to continuing “the family business”:“It wasn't until I heard Art Tatum on the radio that I began to appreciate the richmusical tradition of my father. My dad, William Simon grew up hearing FateMarable's group and other piano players from new Orleans coming up theMississippi River on steamboats. After World War II, he played live on radio stationKVOO, Tulsa, Oklahoma, which at the time was an NBC affiliate. There he met mymother, big band singer Taudie Dalton. To this day they continue to performpopular songs of the golden era of jazz and have many stories to tell including howthey met Louis Armstrong a couple of times. So it was back in the late 1970s, that Ibegan learning the musical language of jazz in order to connect with the soundand the history I was first exposed to through my parents.” Reed Simon

“No doubt about it, Ernie Krivda is one of the originals of the tenor saxophone”wrote Bill Donaldson for Cadence Magazine about the legendary jazz musicianwhose 6th decade on the music scene is already filled with a variety ofaccomplishment. The tenor saxophonist is regarded by critics such as the lateHarvey Pekar as "one of the best jazz tenor men in the world". The composer haswritten countless compositions in multiple genres. The recording artist has wellover thirty albums released on a number of record labels with more on the way.The teacher has former students performing and recording all over the world.

In 2009 Ernie Krivda received the Cleveland Arts Prize award for lifetimeachievement in music and the lifetime of achievement continues. Krivda who hasrecently won the Jazz Legends award from Cleveland's Tri-C jazz Festival and aCPAC (Community Partnership of Arts and Culture) Fellowship, continues with greatenergy and passion.

In a career that spans over 50 years, Krivda has earned the respect of his peersand the accolades of critics. His very personal and distinctive improvisational style,along with his unique compositions, has been documented on over 30 recordingsunder his name and many others as a guest artist. In the last decade and into thisone, he has set a most prolific pace with eleven releases since 2003 and more tocome.

Dave Thomas is a most talented piano and organ player. A native of Youngstown,Ohio, Thomas was an original member of the R&B group, "Sweet Thunder". He hasalso performed with numerous artists including the late James Cleveland, DizzyGillespie, Albert Ayler, Jean Carn, David Ruffin, and Grover Washington. Hismusical involvement also includes musical theater as a writer, performer, andmusical director. He is also a gifted educator, having worked at The ClevelandSchool of the Arts, Cuyahoga Community College, Cleveland State University, andCase Western Reserve University.

Bob Fraser is is a graduate of Case Western University with a degree inengineering. The fact that Bob chose a career in music over engineering tells ofhis deep love of playing the guitar in musical situations. Bob is the guitar player theCleveland Orchestra calls when they are performing a piece that requires guitar.Bob is also the guitar player with the Cleveland Jazz Ochestra and is the first callguitarist for virually all the Cleveland and northeast Ohio musicians. Bob has beenteaching guitar at the college level for many years at Akron University andCleveland State University.

Renell Gonsalves was born in Detroit, raised in Chicago and began playing drumsin 1963. His influences are Max Roach, Elvin Jones, Tony Williams, Candy Finch,Roy Haynes, Art Blakey and many others. He moved back to Detroit in 1970 andhas worked with many artists including Brainstorm, Lyman Woodard, AlexanderZonjic, and Bugs Beddow's band. Today, he continues to freelance playing a widevariety of music and learning more and more about music..

Grammy nominated, Hammond organist, Brian Charette has established himselfas a leading voice in modern jazz. He has worked with many notable artists such asJoni Mitchell, Chaka Khan, Lou Donaldson, and countless others. Since moving toNew York in 1995 from his native Meriden, Connecticut, Charette has become anintegral part of the New York City jazz scene.

Brian is a SteepleChase recording artist, and has just released his third recordingfor them, "Music for Organ Sextette". He also just finished a solo organ recordingthat will be out in January 2013. Brian performs regularly all over the world. Thisyear, Brian has been playing very successful engagements in NYC, LA, Spain,Indonesia, Czech Republic, and Germany.

Brian writes master classes regularly for Keyboard Magazine, and has recentlybecome a Nord endorsed artist. In June, Downbeat Magazine gave "Music for OrganSextette" 3 1/2 stars and listed Brian as a "Rising Star" in the 2012 Critics Poll.

Pianist and Contemporary Jazz Superstar & his group return for big weekend atNighttown!

Montreux-reared Bugnon studied at a music conservatory in Paris before comingto America to continue at Boston’s famed Berklee School of Music. He spent a lotof time playing not only jazz but gospel, gigging on that time-honored southerncircuit. Upon graduation he moved to New York. After spending a year drivingtaxicabs and teaching French at the Berlitz School, he found initial work backingR&B stars such as Patti Austin & James Ingram and Keith Sweat. It was throughbacking Freddie Jackson that he made the contact at then-new Orpheus Recordswhere he recorded his first two CDs Love Season (1989) and Head Over Heels(1991), making his deepest first impressions with R&B audiences as a soulfulinstrumentalist du jour. A switch to Sony’s Epic Records family yielded 107 Degreesin the Shade (1991) and This Time Around (1993), upon which time he jumped toRCA Records for Tales from the Bright Side (1995). From there he segued into thefour albums he did for Narada Records, an associated label that specialized insmooth jazz and new age.

Beyond his recordings, Alex has built a loyal fan base through constant touring onthe club and jazz festival circuits. Just last year he passed the great Dizzy Gillespie’srecord of playing Washington, D.C.’s Blues Alley for 12 consecutive Thanksgivingswith his own lucky 13th visit. That most recent gig found his new music from GoingHome receiving quite the warm welcome. “People in their 40s, 50s and 60s thathave all of my CDs were raving about the new songs,” he beams. “At the sametime, college students that are more likely to be Radiohead fans were coming upto me saying, ‘I really dug that ‘Silver Finger’ song, man’ - which was really nice tohear!”

Hismusical involvement also includes musical theater as a writer, performer, andmusical director in performances such as "The Living Cross," "The Audition," and"Black Nativity," which have played throughout the United States and Canada. He isalso a gifted educator, having worked at The Cleveland School of the Arts,Cuyahoga Community College, Cleveland State University, and Case WesternReserve University. He is the co-author of a book entitled, "A Child's First Book ofSpirituals," which is the recipient of the Coretta Scott King Award.

Presently, Dave is a music teacher with the Cleveland Board of Education SchoolDistrict, Musical Staff member of The Southeast Seventh Day Adventist, Facultymember of The Cleveland State University, and Minister of Music at St. TimothyBaptist Church. He earned his undergraduate and graduate Music degrees fromCleveland State, Cleveland Institute of Music, Case Western Reserve University,and postgraduate work at the Royal Holloway College in London, England.

Evelyn Wright has been a professional vocalist for over twenty five years withexperience in Jazz, R&B and Pop styles of music. Evelyn is a native from Cleveland,Ohio, and was voted Best Female Vocalist in 1985 in conjunction with WCPN radiostation. She is also the winner of Most Promising Female Artist and Favorite FemaleR&B Singer 1993 by Midwest Urban Music Awards. Evelyn has toured throughoutthe United States and Canada performing in the top hotels, nightclubs, and concerthalls.

Evelyn has also recorded with several international recording stars including PhillipIngram and Gerald Albright.

The diverse and very personal set ofsongs includes both familiar standards and compositions by Lennon/McCartney,Randy Newman, two songs by Ivan Lins, recorded in the original Portuguese, and,for the first time, a Monheit original.

“I knew that I wanted the material to be chosen based on the lyrical content”, saysMonheit of the eclectic track list. “Over the years, my singing has really taken onthat focus. At the beginning of my career, I wanted to show proof of my knowledgeof music, that I could improvise and sing through the changes. But as I got older,especially after getting married and having a child, I started feeling the lyrics moresimply because I had more to sing about. Focusing on the technical side was partof my learning process, but over time, all of that became a natural part of mysinging. Now I use it to support the lyric, not just to prove myself.”

Monheit has been a leading light in both the jazz and cabaret worlds sinceemerging as a finalist in the Thelonious Monk Institute’s 1998 vocal competition. Inaddition to her own recordings, she has worked alongside the likes of TerenceBlanchard, Tom Harrell, and Ivan Lins. She says that the distinctive, continuallysurprising sound of The Heart Of The Matter is the result of an especially satisfyingcollaboration with Grammy-winning producer Gil Goldstein, who has previouslyworked with such giants as Wayne Shorter, Gil Evans, and Pat Metheny. The pairfirst joined forces for part of Monheit’s 2009 album The Lovers, The Dreamers, andMe.

Though the dozen tracks were recorded in just three days, Monheit notes that thesessions came at “a very intense time” in her own life. Her young son had recentlyinjured his arm and needed surgery, and her grandparents had been displaced byHurricane Sandy, losing nearly everything they owned. “When you’re isolated inthe vocal booth, you’re able to process everything,” she says. “There are nodistractions, so you get inside yourself more to reach a deeper level ofinterpretation.”

From the song choices to the performances, The Heart Of The Matter is a workdeeply informed by Jane Monheit’s life- as a woman, wife, and mother in thesecond decade of a remarkable career- and it reaches emotional levels sheattributes to an “extreme comfort zone” in the recording studio. “It was a smallgroup, we’re all friends, and everyone really wanted to be there,” she says. “I’mvery close with my band, so to hear Gil’s beautiful work with my family beneath itinspired me to be completely unselfconscious… I think I’ve finally reached my levelof onstage, live interpretation in the studio, which has always been a challenge forme.”

The youngpianist attended a 1968 concert in Reims, France, by master boogie-woogie andblues pianist Memphis Slim, and immediately put an end to his classical efforts andbegan teaching himself the blues, scouring local record shops for LP's by boogiewoogie greats. In 1980 he was invited by Memphis Slim - who had been a parisiancitizen since 1962 - to cut an album titled « Dialog In Boogie » as a piano duet. A frenchman who loves and plays classic American jazz is not entirely unusual, butwhat sets Philippe apart from his contemporaries is his soulfoul feel for the music.His repertoire ranges from classic barrelhouse boogie woogie piano to DukeEllington and Horace Silver tunes as well those of Milt Jackson and GeorgeGershwin. Philippe LeJeune has released six CD's in the United States and also makesnumerous appearances in various American jazz and blues clubs and festivals :Detroit Jazz Festival, Toledo Art Tatum Jazz Heritage Festival, Monterey Bay BluesFest, Cincinnati Blues Festival. His performance at the 2005 Motor City Blues &Boogie Woogie Festival (Detroit) was recorded live to be edited into P.B.S.television specials and DVD. One of the most sought after studio guitarists,Phil also continues to sell out concerts all over the United States, with his ever-changing style, ranging from rock-and-roll to fully orchestrated instrumentalcompositions.

Born on March 23, 1951 in Youngstown, OH, the ninth of ten children, Phil grew upin a home filled with music. On Phil's 10th birthday, his brother, Dave returnedhome with a Sears Silvertone guitar. That's when the magic began.

Phil spent most of his younger days involved in music, and at the young age of 13,he joined his very first band, the Keytones. He later went on to join such localgroups as The Vertices, The Squires, and the Volume Four, who later changed theirname to New Hudson Exit.

But it wasn't until 1970, when Phil's band Glass Harp (with childhood friend JohnSferra on drums, and Dan Pecchio on bass) recorded their self-titled first albumthat people really began to take notice of this incredibly gifted guitar player. GlassHarp gained more popularity in the Ohio area, opening for such bands as the Kinksand Yes, and even performing at the prestigious Carnegie Hall in New York City. Over the next few years, they recorded two more albums entitled "Synergy" and "ItMakes Me Glad".

By 1972, Phil saw his life going in a different direction, and made the toughdecision to leave Glass Harp and pursue a solo career. His first solo album, "WhatA Day", was recorded in just a week's time during January 1973. He married hissweetheart Bernadette, and they moved to Upstate New York and joined a Churchcommunity called Love Inn.

During his years there, Phil took a break from recording his own music. It wasn'tuntil three years later in 1976 that Phil would record his second solo album, "LoveBroke Thru", which was soon followed by a string of albums, including theacclaimed instrumental album, "The Master And The Musician".

With the Christian Music industry really beginning to grow, Phil won his very firstDove award in 1988 for his instrumental album, “The Wind and the Wheat. Phil'ssecond Dove Award came in 1992 for his Celtic-influenced, "Beyond Nature". Eachyear from 1998 to 2001, Phil has dominated the "Instrumental Record" category atthe Doves, winning for "Invention", "Acoustic Sketches", "Majesty and Wonder", andmost recently "Lights of Madrid". For three years in a row, Phil was voted one of thetop fingerstyle guitarists by Guitar Player Magazine readers.

These days, Phil Keaggy continues to delight audiences all over the US performingprimarily acoustic shows, and occasional concerts with a band. He is aware thatGod gave him a calling to deliver the Gospel through his music, and for over 40years, Phil Keaggy has been grateful to do just that, and will hopefully continue todo so for many years to come.

Storm Large: musician, actor, playwright, author, awesome. She shot to nationalprominence in 2006 as a finalist on the CBS show Rock Star: Supernova, wheredespite having been eliminated in the week before the finale, Storm built a fanbase that follows her around the world to this day.

Storm spent the 90s singing in clubs throughout San Francisco. Tired of the clubscene, she moved to Portland to pursue a new career as a chef, but a last minutecancellation in 2002 at the Portland club “Dante’s” turned into a standingWednesday night engagement for Storm and her new band, The Balls. It wasn’tlong before Storm had a cult-like following in Portland, and a renewed singingcareer that was about to be launched onto the international stage.

Storm made her debut as guest vocalist with the band Pink Martini in April 2011,singing four sold-out concerts with the National Symphony Orchestra at theKennedy Center in Washington, DC. She continues to perform with the band,touring nationally and internationally, and she was featured on their CD, GetHappy. Storm has also sung with Grammy winner k.d. lang, pianist Kirill Gerstein,punk rocker John Doe, singer/songwriter Rufus Wainwright, and Rock and Roll Hallof Famer George Clinton.

She debuted with the Oregon Symphony in 2010, and has returned for sold out

performances each year thereafter. Storm made her Carnegie Hall debut in May2013, singing Weill’s Seven Deadly Sins with the Detroit Symphony as part of theSpring for Music festival. The NY Times called her “sensational,” and the classicalmusic world instantly had a new star.

In 2007, she took a career departure and starred in Portland Center Stage’sproduction of Cabaret with Wade McCollum. The show was a smash hit, earningLarge glowing reviews. Her next endeavor, the autobiographical musical memoir,Crazy Enough, played to packed houses in 2009 during its unprecedented 21-weeksold out run in Portland. Storm went on to perform a cabaret version of the showto critical acclaim at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Adelaide Festival in Australia,and Joe’s Pub in New York. Her memoir, Crazy Enough, was released by Simon andSchuster in 2012, named Oprah’s Book of the Week, and awarded the 2013Oregon Book Award for Creative Nonfiction.

Chip StephensThroughout the eighties and nineties pianist Chip Stephens was one of the mostpopular and talented jazz musicians on the Cleveland scene. He has been missedsince moving to Colorado ten years ago. Fortunately he has moved a little closerto Ohio and now resides in Illinois. An immensely talented musician, ChipStephens already had a national presence before leaving Cleveland. For severalyears he toured and recorded with Grammy winning Cuban trumpeter ArturoSandoval. Among his other credits are lengthy tenures with Maynard Ferguson,and the Woody Herman Orchestra. He has also performed with major jazz artistsincluding Kenny Burrell, Michael Brecker, Tito Puente, Joe Lovano, Clark Terry, theGlenn Miller Orchestra, and many many more.

Chip has appeared on over 70 CD's and has two solo CD out on Cleveland's Azicarecords. In 2007, Chip released his third CD on Denver based Capri Records. Besides being a performer and recording artist of the first rank, Chip Stephens is aprofessor of Music at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. Prior toteaching at the University of Illinois, Chip was a professor of music at the Universityof Colorado, and at Youngstown State University.

Glenn WilsonGlenn has been a professional jazz saxophonist for35 years. After completing his undergraduatedegree from Youngstown State University in 1977,Glenn moved to New York City, where he workedand recorded with The Buddy Rich Band, LionelHampton Orchestra, Toshiko Akiyoshi JazzOrchestra, Tito Puente, Machito, Bill Kirchner Nonet,Bob Belden Ensemble, and scores of other jazz andlatin-jazz groups.

Glenn recorded his first CD as a leader in 1984 forCadence Records. In 1988, Glenn began hisassociation with Sunnyside Records with therelease of Elusive. Three more CDs with Sunnyside -Bittersweet, Blue Porpoise Avenue, and One Man’sBlues - as well as a recording for Timeless Records,Lee’s Keys Please, followed in the next decade.

Glenn has been featured in the DownBeatMagazine Critics Poll in the Baritone Saxophone category. In 1993 Glenn recordedwith pianist Bruce Hornsby on Harbor Lights and joined Bruce’s band.

South African Trumpet Legend Hugh Masekela joins forces with his old friend,and colleague, pianist Larry Willis, in Duo performance Live at Nighttown!

This evening brings a grand reunion of old friends, as South African trumpet iconHugh Masekela and master jazz pianist Larry Willis perform in a rare duet setting.When Masekela and Willis met as Manhattan School of Music students in the early1960s they were both fish out of water seeking their own musical paths.

Encouraged by Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, and Harry Belafonte, Masekelacombined his homeland’s music with hard bop and R&B, creating a hugely popularsound exemplified by his 1968 chart-topping hit “Grazing In the Grass.”

Willis was studying theory and classical voice until Masekela encouraged him tofocus on jazz (but not before making his recording debut in an Aaron Coplandopera directed by Leonard Bernstein). Willis became a first-call accompanist,recording with everyone from Jackie McLean and Lee Morgan to Branford Marsalisand Roy Hargrove, while also making numerous excellent albums of his own.

A few years ago they reunited in South Africa and ended up recording a four-discduo project, Friends, featuring Willis’s incisive piano and Masekela’s soulfultrumpet and vocals. Interpreting standards with warmth and boundless humanity,they offer a timeless take on ageless music.

A world-class soloist, accomplished composer and formidable bandleader,saxophonist Chris Potter has emerged as a leading light of his generation. DownBeat called him "One of the most studied (and copied) saxophonists on the planet"while Jazz Times identified him as "a figure of international renown." Jazz sax elderstatesman Dave Liebman called him simply, "one of the best musicians around," a

statesman Dave Liebman called him simply, "one of the best musicians around," asentiment shared by the readers of Down Beat in voting him second only to tenorsax great Sonny Rollins in the magazine's 2008 Readers Poll.

A potent improvisor and the youngest musician ever to win Denmark's JazzparPrize, Potter's impressive discography includes 15 albums as a leader and sidemanappearances on over 100 albums. He was nominated for a Grammy Award for hissolo work on "In Vogue," a track from Joanne Brackeen’s 1999 album Pink ElephantMagic, and was prominently featured on Steely Dan’s Grammy-winning albumfrom 2000, Two Against Nature. He has performed or recorded with many of theleading names in jazz, such as Herbie Hancock, Dave Holland, John Scofield, theMingus Big Band, Jim Hall, Paul Motian, Dave Douglas, Ray Brown and many others.

Since bursting onto the New York scene in 1989 as an 18-year-old prodigy withbebop icon Red Rodney (who himself had played as a young man alongside thelegendary Charlie Parker), Potter has steered a steady course of growth as aninstrumentalist and composer-arranger. Through the '90s, he continued to gaininvaluable bandstand experience as a sideman while also making strongstatements as a bandleader-composer-arranger.

Looking back over his 20 years since arriving in New York, Potter says, “I’ve had thechance to learn a lot from all the leaders that I’ve worked with.

His initial gig with Red Rodney was an eye-opening and educational experience forthe 18-year-old saxophonist. “I wish I had had the perspective I have now toappreciate what a larger-than-life character Red was.” Potter's years with PaulMotian's Electric Bebop Band represented a wholly different approach fromRodney’s old school bebop aesthetic on stage. “Motian has really had a big affecton the way that I think about music,” says the saxophonist. “He approaches thingsfrom such an anti-analytical way. It’s so different than so many of the othermusicians that I’ve had a chance to work with. Motian more relies on his aestheticsensibility and his instinct. He’s basically just trusting his gut and he’s so strongabout it that he can make it work. And it takes a lot of courage to do that.”

From bassist-bandleader Dave Holland he learned about the importance of focusand willpower. "Dave is determined to make his music as strong as possible andpresent it in the best way," says Potter, who has been a member of Holland'sgroups for the past 10 years.

Now a respected veteran (as well as a new father), Potter continues to work as abandleader and featured sideman. Surely many interesting chapters await. Jazz Piano Legend, and three-time Grammy Winner in rare clubappearance live at Nighttown!!!Ramsey Lewis has been an iconic leader in the contemporary jazz movement for over 50years with an unforgettable sound and outgoing personality that has allowed him to crossover to the pop and R&B charts.

The Ramsey Lewis Trio, with bassist Eldee Young and percussionist Redd Holt, became afixture on the Chicago jazz scene, releasing their debut album, Ramsey Lewis & HisGentlemen of Jazz, back in 1956. Lewis earned his first gold record, as well as a Grammyaward for Best Jazz Performance, for their swinging version of Dobie Gray’s hit “The InCrowd.” He returned to the pop charts in 1966 with versions of “Hang On Sloopy” and

Crowd.” He returned to the pop charts in 1966 with versions of “Hang On Sloopy” and“Wade In The Water.” Throughout the years, Lewis’ trio has undergone membershipchanges, all the while staying true to Lewis’ high musical standards.

After Young and Holt left Lewis’ trio to form their own group, the pianist hired a newrhythm section with Cleveland Eaton on bass and Maurice White on drums. When Whiteleft the band to form Earth, Wind & Fire, Morris Jennings signed on as the trio’s newpercussionist. White returned to produce Lewis’ 1974 smash album entitled Sun Goddess,in which Lewis first experimented with electronic keyboards and featured Earth, Wind &Fire on the album. In 1983, Lewis returned to the studio with Young and Holt for thealbum Reunion.

Throughout his illustrious career, Lewis who is a NEA Jazz Master, has also joined forceswith countless other artists to create new and innovative music. In 1984, he collaboratedwith Nancy Wilson on The Two of Us; in 1988, he recorded with London’s PhilharmonicOrchestra for the album A Classic Encounter; and in 1989, Lewis and Dr. Billy Taylor cut aset of piano duets in We Meet Again. In 1995, Lewis launched the side project UrbanKnights, in which he collaborated with a handful of successful crossover jazz stars,including Grover Washington, Jr., Earl Klugh, and Dave Koz. In 1997, Lewis added discjockey to his resume, hosting a popular show on Chicago’s WNUA-FM that ran until 2009. A new show was syndicated in 2006 under the name Legends of Jazz with Ramsey Lewisand was broadcast on jazz radio stations across the country. In 2006, a well-received 13-episode Legends of Jazz television series hosted by Lewis was broadcast by PBS. Latelyhe has been touring with Philip Bailey (Earth, Wind & Fire), John Pizzarelli and Dee DeeBridgewater as well as doing dates in celebration of the 50th anniversary of "The 'In'Crowd".

After having played mostly in an acoustic trio for the last fifteen years, Lewis’ latestendeavor has him returning to his electric roots. The three time Grammy® winner willrelease his new CD Taking Another Look – Deluxe Edition on July 24, 2015, featuring anew electric quintet with Henry Johnson on guitar, Michael Logan on keys, Joshua Ramoson bass and Charles Heath on drums. On the CD, Lewis rekindles his 1974 career-definingalbum “Sun Goddess”.

The CD also features three bonus tracks. First, the legendary Dr. John serves up someCajun style funk with his rendition of “Jungle Strut”. Then up and comers and jazz fusionfunksters Kung Fu turn in a mesmerizing version of “Tambura”. Finally, TAUK delivers anamazing take on “Sharing Her Journey” that clearly establishes them as a band to watch.
