I won’t be travelling to London for the Olympics but I will be there to see the Olympic flame arrive back in London the day before the Olympics begin including a concert in Hyde Park.

Taylors of Tickhill awarded ‘My Shop Your Shop’ award

Nisa member, Taylors of Tickhill, has been awarded a My Shop Your Shop award for its fantastic contribution to its local community.

Taylors of Tickhill has been at the heart of its local community since 1946 and not only provides its customers with a wide spectrum of products at fantastic prices, but it also holds regular tasting events for its local people to enjoy as well as donating a large sum to local charities and good causes through the Making A Difference Locally charity.

Don Valley MP Caroline Flint praised Nisa retailer Taylor’s of Tickhill as “the heart and soul of the village” as she presented the team with the My Shop is Your Shop Community Retailing a ward. She commented: “The shop has been here for over 60 years and as well as being somewhere that can people can buy a great variety of goods, it takes its role as a proud member of the community very seriously. The projects they undertake are bespoke to their local area. It’s the relationships that the Taylor family and their staff have maintained in the community that really makes it a cut above the rest.”

The FWD's My Shop is Your Shop campaign promotes the value of the wholesale distribution chain and in particular the community role played by independent shops. It publicises the

unique contribution local stores make to their neighbourhood, both economic and social, and encourages retailers to make the most of this strength to boost sales and attract new customers.

Owner Roy Taylor says that a focus on supporting local schools and groups by working with Nisa’s Making A Difference Locally charity, as well as helping businesses in the area by selling their produce, has helped cement the convenience store at the heart of the village of Tickhill, near Doncaster.

“By working with Nisa we’ve been able to donate to the local scouts and the junior football team, provide waterproofs for a playgroup and are helping to buy microphones for a drama group. We also deliver products free of charge and we have a phone-ordering service for customers who are infirm,” said Roy.

David Visick, director of communications for the FWD, commented: “Our campaign this year has turned up some really excellent local stores like Taylor’s, which demonstrate how small stores can thrive through great service and genuine care for their customers and neighbours.”

A Strawberry Tea hosted at Tickhill Cricket Club by Judy Horton and Ruth Barnett raised an amazing £800 for Breast Cancer Care, a charity providing information and support

to anyone affected by breast cancer.

Supporters enjoyed a feast of cakes, scones, tea and the odd glass of Pimms! Decorated cakes donated by Debbie Davies and Lynsey Coates raised a whopping £150 in the raffle and Guess the Weight competition, whilst the bouncy castle brought in £55 kindly donated back by Simmos Castle Hire.

Many thanks to the Cricket Club for donating the venue and to everyone who came along to support the event.

Tickhill St Mary’s C of E Primary and Nursery School Olympic Celebrations To celebrate the Olympics being held in London this summer the children have been undertaking many different activities including researching a country taking part in the Olympics and having our own Olympic ceremony with a real Olympic Torch! As you can see in the photograph the real thing on the left (which was very kindly lent to us for the day) looks very similar to our own version on the right. I think the Olympic committee has done a good job copying ours….

Y6 in the IOW Our Y6 children who went to the Isle of Wight for a week’s residential even brought the Olympic torch to the IOW! That was not the only purpose of the visit. They were also charged with being responsible for their own things, budget with their pocket money, listen and co-operate as well as having an enormous amount of fun! They completed all tasks admirably well! They had a fantastic time taking part in many different activities such as body boarding, visiting a theme park, having a talk on fossils (no, not about the teachers, the real thing!), listening to smugglers tales, visiting a castle, going on boat trip and much, much more which they will remember for a long time to come!

Caroline Flint MP visits St Mary’s school

Our Y4 children wrote to Caroline Flint, MP about their concerns regarding people parking on the yellow markings outside of school, making it very dangerous to cross as they cannot see what is coming. We have tried appealing to parents via the newsletter, we have contacted the police and community team, but to no avail.

Miss Flint was so concerned and touched by the children’s appeal for help that she decided to visit our school and have a look for herself.

She chatted with the children to find out what they thought could be done and has promised to try and help as much as she can. We were very grateful that she took time out of her busy schedule to came and hear what the children had to say!

Wadworth School Year 5 Visit to Sir Thomas Wharton

Community College

On Thursday 5th July, Year 5 paid a visit to Sir Thomas Wharton Community College for an Enterprise Day. We were divided into teams with other children from Edlington Victoria Primary School. All of the activities were lead by two hilarious people called Sean & Tony from Bright Futures.

First of all, we did a fun wordsearch that was split into 5 pieces. It was quite confusing as some of the words were on someone else’s sheet, but a great challenge all the same.

Next, we did a greatly confusing activity. We had to fit our whole team through just one piece of A4 paper. It was very difficult, but Tony showed us how to do it at the end. It was fun, but very frustrating!

After, we did a worksheet called 10 things. We had to name 10 things we should have in our pencil case, emotions we go through, school rules and things we need to be to be successful. It was a rush but very funny, too!

Then, we played a game which was similar to the T.V. show, Catchphrase. It was very fun.

In the Afternoon, we made something called a makarapa. It is a type of hat originally invented in South Africa. You can make them for all kinds of events, such as football and cricket. We based ours on London 2012 Olympic Games and then modelled them after. My team won!

The last thing we did was the egg cup challenge. We had to make as many egg cup bases as we could and sell them to the teachers at the stall. We started off with £4 and we had to buy paper (£2 or £4) ad pens to decorate with (£1 per pen). There were all sorts of special offers, like buy a piece of paper for £4 and get two free. The point of the game was to experience running a business. My team won again!

At the event, I learnt it is great to have people around and to listen to their ideas. I truly enjoyed myself at this thrilling experience.

M ayflower Animal Sanctuary

Forrest is a gorgeous 8 year old Saluki Cross

He unfortunately arrived into care as he wasn’t getting along with one of the dogs in his previous pack.

We have found Forrest to be a very affectionate, loving dog; he does appreciate his own space though.

He is brilliant on a lead and is a pleasure to walk. He does have a strong ‘prey drive’ however and if let off the lead will chase small animals.

We feel that he would be better in a home where he would be the only dog. Although he is happy to walk alongside another dog he doesn’t like to share with them. We are looking for a loving, calm home for Forrest where we know he would be most happy and would thrive to become a much loved member of the family. We are a small livery based in Harworth old village. We try to offer livery that is flexible to our clients needs at the end of the day every horse is different and we all unless we are very lucky have to fit our horsie lives around work and family commitments. We may not be perfect but we will try to help you as much as we can to enjoy the time you spend with your horse. We have several fields around the village which are now grassed down for horse livery. Our main livery area is down Common Lane. We have organised this area into acre mini paddocks so that we can try to keep every

owners horse/ horses separate, making poo picking, feeding, handling and catching easier to manage.

So we feel you get the best of both worlds, your own private horse paddock but with horsie neighbours to hack out with and company for any horses in paddocks on their own. Tickhill Business Association “Buy Local” Logo Winner is announced. Sponsored by Tickhill Business Association & Yorkshire Wildlife Park, the competition invited children from St Marys & Estfeld School in Tickhill to design their new “Buy Local” logo.

The association were thoroughly delighted by the number of entries received and simply amazed by the creativity displayed and wanted to thank all the children involved.

1st Prize of a Family Ticket to Yorkshire Wildlife Park was awarded to Alexandra Grant of Estfeld Primary School

2nd Prize of a £20 Voucher was awarded to Matthew Shaw of St Marys School.

The chosen logo will be displayed in all members businesses and used for all activities associated with the “Buy Local “campaign. The very first Window Sticker was applied to Taylors by Caroline flint MP during her recent visit to the store.

Year 6 School Visit London and Kingswood

In May the Year 6 pupils at Estfeld were fortunate enough to visit the Kingswood Centre at Ashford and London. The Kingswood Centre has state of the art outdoor and adventurous pursuit facilities and Year 6 thoroughly enjoyed being daredevils for the weekend as the abseiled, zip-wired, and took the leap of faith. It was fortunate they most of them had a good head for heights. More leisurely pursuits included archery, quad-biking and swimming.

The party also took a cultural day trip to London. The pupils took a flight on the London Eye and a Thames river cruise, learning about the capital’s sights and history. They also visited the Tate Gallery to see modern art at its best and the National Gallery in Trafalgar Square, where the pupils viewed paintings by the Impressionists, having studied the work of the Impressionists this year in class.

It was wonderful to visit London only the week before the Jubilee celebrations and a good time was had by all.

Odd Verses

We all know of the Limerick, the nonsense verse popularised by Edward Lear, but how many know of the Clerihew? This little verse form was invented by Edward Clerihew Bentley, the essayist and novelist usually known as E. C. Bentley.

The clerihew has just four lines of unequal length with the rhyming sequence AABB. The first line is always the name of a person and the other three lines say something about that person, often amusing. So it is both biographical and whimsical.

An early example is the following: Sir Christopher Wren Said, ‘I’m going to dine with some men; If anyone calls Say I’m designing St Paul’s’.

Rather taken with this idea I have had a go at writing a few of my own about notable personalities in Tickhill. I only hope that nobody feels offended by my amateur efforts. They do try to be more complimentary than critical. Mrs Paula Mickley Creates her magazines very slickly So we all shout ‘Hooray’ For ‘Tickhill Today’. Mr Raymond Hill Exactly fits the bill; As the town’s splendid Mayor He is quite beyond compare. Mrs Margaret Cannings-Clough Certainly seems to know her stuff For people keep remarking On her busy Town Clerking. Mr John Hoare Has talents galore So is just the right man For the Tickhill Neighbourhood Plan. I tried to devise a derogatory one about myself, but so far have failed to find a credible rhyme for my surname!

Perhaps readers may like to have a go at writing their own Clerihews. But don’t go libelling anybody!

T ickhill & District Lions Many of you may not realise that Lions Clubs International (of which Tickhill & District Lions is part) is the largest service club organisation in the world. There are over 45,000 other Lions clubs across the globe, made up of members who give their time to make a difference and help those in need. This gives us a great community of like minded people

to join up with, that together enables us to do things that we simply couldn’t achieve on our own.

On the 11th of August, many of the clubs in our district are getting together to host our 32nd annual Lions Fun Day for the Disabled at Sandall Park (off Barnby Dunn Road) in Doncaster. This event is fully funded by the Lions groups that take part, making it free to all participants and open to all disabled people, whatever their age or disability.

Starting from 10.30am there will be a host of activities throughout the day, including many events taking place in marquees and under cover, so even if the unseasonably wet weather continues it still promises to be a great day. Every competitor receives a medal just for taking part, and at the end of the day some will also be presented with a trophy.

Over 750 people are expected to take part, but there’s always room for plenty more. So if you know anyone who you think would enjoy the day then please let them know about it, and if you’d like more details about the event please contact Lion Reg Myers on 01302 841 580.

R ossington Tornedale School We had quite a turnout from the local community to help dig out the foundations for our new play path at Tornedale Infant School. Many thanks to

you all for coming along on a Saturday morning. You will be pleased to hear that on Wednesday a company came to surface the path and it looks lovely. As soon as it has hardened of it will be suitable for use.

The project has been funded by donations from Tickhill Lions. Some of the Lions also came to help with digging out of foundations and we were lucky enough to receive help from Phoenix Explorers from Tickhill too. Two partners of Tornedale staff, and one parent, also came to help out. A very big thank you to everyone who volunteered their time and energy. We managed to dig out the whole area, and have two tea breaks in just two hours. It just shows what team work can do!

MP joins Primary pupils to hear parking concerns

Caroline Flint has visited Tickhill St Mary’s School, where she met four pupils to hear their concerns about parking and road safety outside of their school.

Said Caroline: “It was very interesting to meet the pupils who were very clear that they worry about cars parking very close to the school when children are arriving or leaving.

“The school are clear that it is a handful of parents who ignore the zigzag lines and the No Excuses warning banner. Often they are parents who are running late, who think it won’t hurt to break the rules, for a minute of two. I wonder if they would carry on doing it if they had to hear these pupils concerns.

“Responsible parking is something every parent who drives has to think about. I hope parents of pupils at St Mary’s are good listeners.”

Said Headteacher, Jayne Boaler: “The pupils in Year 4 were delighted that Caroline had responded to their letters and welcomed her into school to explain their concerns about people parking on the yellow lines outside school. They are taking registration numbers down, putting notices in the school newsletter and writing to local councillors because they are worried that someone will be hurt. Caroline’s visit will raise the profile even further so that an accident doesn’t have to happen before the “yellow parking” stops!”

On the 23 July Charlotte Booker of Rye Croft, Tickhill set off from Westminster Abbey in London with a group of students from Durham University, in order to cycle 3000 miles to Istanbul, Turkey. They will cross 11 countries in just under two months and will cycle an average of 60 miles a day.

She is undertaking this challenge in aid of The Cancer Care and Haematology Fund and is aiming to have raised £1500 for this great cause by the time she returns. This money will help the facility continue to pay for expert staff and help them extend their chemotherapy suite.

A rt Review and What’s Going On August 2012 Hilary Cartmel

It’s a hard call to say which was the most pleasurable – Neil MacGregor’s short series on Radio 4: ‘Shakespeare’s Restless World’ or Simon Schama’s ‘This England’ and ‘Hollow Crowns’ two parter on BBC2. The telly is awash with programs about the Bard, and what fantastic stuff it is. What was so good about the MacGregor and

Schama arguments was the contextualisation of the work. They are great stories and beautiful language, but to have them placed in history with reference to the politics and society’s habits and fashions was an eye-opener.

There have been some stunning new takes on the plays. The Richard II with Ben Wishaw in the lead left, in my opinion, the older interpretations standing, his mincing rendering of the ineffectual king was so superior to Jacobi’s camp foppish characterisation – the crisply enunciated phrases of Sir Lawrence Olivier, Sir John Geilgood, Vanessa Redgrave are Derek Jacobi are far too plumy for today’s audience to engage with. Perhaps we are too used to modern camera work and lighting. Too used to realism. Even on stage the work today is fresher and following Ethan Hawke’s ruminations on Macbeth the Crucible is staging it this Autumn directed by Daniel Evans. If it’s half as good as their Hamlet 2 years ago, it will be worth an evening out.

All this is part of the World Shakespeare festival / London 2012 Festival. And for the price of a theatre ticket the British Museum have an exhibition, which no doubt Neil MacGregor has had something to do with entitled Shakespeare staging the World The exhibition provides a unique insight into the emerging role of London as a world city, seen through the innovative perspective of Shakespeare’s plays.

Miro at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park has been on exhibition a while now. I thought I’d be clever and go on a quiet day, avoid the weekend crowds, you know, have a peaceful amble round the work. Just me and the bronzes. So I decided on a Monday morning. YSP opens at 10am, so perfectly timed I drove in the gates at five to ten to find 3 coaches and about 30 cars in the car park, and the café’s balcony already bursting with customers. Needless to say I joined them. YSP simply doesn’t have an empty day. Several school parties were visiting as well as people like me, boots on and ready for several hours of walking and looking. The Miro exhibition is the first of its kind in the UK, and for that reason alone worth the trip. The work has come from museums and collections in Spain and Mallorca. Joan Miro was a tour-de-force in the modern art movement and his images are iconic and of that period. His paintings seem to sum up Mediterranean sunshine, football, olive oil and oranges. The show is definitely worth seeing, however there is some strange work in amongst it, and this was brought home, going round the exhibition with a group of young teenage boys, clip board questionaires in their hands. One rushed up, looked at the sculpture with a crescent moon that I was musing over and declared ‘it’s a banana on a stool’ and stomped off…and I had to admit – there it was, albeit bronze and brightly coloured, beautifully observed and interpreted! Also showing is a group of small works by Anthony Caro and the Longside Gallery has work by Anish Kapoor. www.ysp.co.uk

speak on ‘Onwards and Upwards – Climbers for the Garden’ which attracted five new members to the Society. With the Scout and Guide Gala having been postponed until late September due to the state of the Recreation Ground we have been left with a range of plants which we were hoping to sell. Many of these are being looked after by Chairman Ray Hill who is happy to allow anyone interested in making a purchase to call at 2, Pinfold Lane whenever he is at home. Plants will be available at each meeting and also at the Horticultural Show on September 8th. On Friday the rain was persistent, even torrential at times, and the drains on

St Mary’s Road were not coping. The mini fountains along the road may have looked pretty but meant backed up drains for the surgery and no usable lavatory or hand wash facilities.

However, the surgery did not close or cancel appointments, instead the staff rearranged appointments to The Colliery Practice at Harworth and staff went there to keep their appointments, whilst Dr Sheehan, Sister Claire, Julie Dodd and Graham Daniel stayed at the Tickhill surgery to deal with any medical emergencies and monitor the premises.

Thank you also to our team of doctors who,

although not happy about the pensions situation, felt it was unfair on patients to take industrial action, and all elected to work normally on the doctors’ day of action.

This is just a quick reminder to all readers. If you haven’t yet filled in and returned the questionnaire, please do

so, we welcome latecomers as we do want to know your views – what you value most and want kept about Tickhill, what you would like to see removed or improved, and if there is anything missing that we might be able to have. Spare copies are available from the Library but any piece of paper will do to send in your ideas.

At the time of writing, a relatively small number of questionnaires have so far come in, but they are interesting and the committee are grateful to all who take the trouble to respond. It isn’t anything directly to do with the Neighbourhood Plan but more than one person has commented that we have a Mill Dam not a duck pond and that Tickhill is (and always has been) a town not a village.

You may have noticed ‘For Sale’ boards in various places put up by Doncaster Borough Council who are evidently trying to raise money. One of these concerns a piece of woodland near to the motorway, which has naturally regenerated over the past 40 years or more and which is developing well as a potential nature reserve. If it were sold, all this could be destroyed and there is no knowing how the land might be used. Some of us have written to the Borough Mayor to ask for this sale to be withdrawn – the outcome will be reported later.

History Walk. We recently entertained a group of 29 visitors from the North Wheatley Walkers’ Group with an hour long walk round Tickhill looking at various

aspects of the town’s history followed by an excellent pie and peas supper at the Millstone. Fortunately we chose one of the few days so far this summer when the sun shone and the event was rated a great success by our visitors. We will consider developing a series of “family walks” designed to be of interest to local people, particularly perhaps in the school holidays.

A Reminder. In the June issue of “Tickhill Today” we mentioned the new illustrated history book of Tickhill which the Society intends to publish next year and asked for your comments on the first chapter which we originally hoped would be available in the Library by mid June. This proved over optimistic but the opening summary chapter is now in the Library together with a book for your comments. We are very keen to ensure that the format and content of our new book appeal to as wide a range of people as possible and would welcome comments from people of all age groups from students at school to senior citizens. Do please try to make time to have a look at the sample chapter and leave a note of your name and ‘phone number with your comment. Anybody doing so will have their name included on a list of contributors in the book when it is published next year.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who came to my assistance when I had the mis-fortune to have a very heavy fall whilst attending the Flower Festival Service in the Methodist Church on Sunday

June 10th. I would make a Special Thank you to Dr. Cooke & his associates, who were in the Congregation at the time, and also to the Lady who let me have the use of her wheelchair until the ambulance arrived.

I must also say Thank you for the numerous Flowers, "Get Well" Cards, and Telephone enquiries that I received in the days following my fall. You are all so very kind. I'm happy to say I am recovering, albeit rather slowly, and I hope to be joining you all again very soon.

What a ridiculously wet month that was. Never, in 39 years, have we had to call off Tickhill Gala. We have had pouring rain, strong winds and hailstones. We have had long and painful discussions about the condition of the playing fields with the council and others. We have rerouted the floats so that they don’t drive on the playing fields but we have NEVER called of the Tickhill gala until this year. The playing fields were, and probably still are, waterlogged. There was no way a lorry, car or even bicycle could safely traverse the field. Even we humans would have had a sticky time. So postpone it we did.

Nevertheless, we decided to hold the float procession as we believed that it was unfair that, after all the work the youngsters had put in to produce the decorations for the floats that all this work would come to nothing. There was no realistic prospect of saving the work until some other time. There was absolutely no chance of recreating the excitement that the youngsters felt about riding on the back of a lorry with their work on public view. So we held the parade. And what a parade it was. The sun shone brightly most of time. The children had a really fine time cheering, waving, performing and generally having a really good time on the floats. The lorry drivers were particularly friendly as were the police escorts. Sadly, it rained for the last 10 minutes but no-one cared. Getting wet seemed a perfectly normal thing to do. I would like to sincerely thank all those people who did anything towards ensuring the procession happened. Without you there would have been no spectacle to bring a glimmer of brightness to what had been a truly miserable time.

Sadly, I cannot, at this time, say whether Tickhill Gala No 39 will actually take place. We will be meeting shortly after this magazine goes to print to decide the way forward. There are many things to consider. e.g. The cancellation charges from the performers will have to be met. We will have to maintain faith with all those businesses who bought advertising in the programme and so on.

Not all was gloom and despondency. On the weekend before the gala, 3 teams of scouts and explorers made their way down to Shennington near Banbury to take place in the national 24 hour pedal car championships. The 2 older teams each pedalled their way round the track over 900 times; the younger team had 16 hours to pedal with an 8 hour rest period. One of the team members – Lily-Anne, who kept going to the end. The following weekend she was the Gala Queen. The roles couldn’t be much farther apart but she carried off both with great character and fortitude.

Tickhill Town Council

Tickhill Town Council at their meeting of the 26th June made this statement. “The Councillors present signed their Declarations of Acceptance of Office and Code of Conduct in the presence of the Clerk and duly accepted the Localism Act of 2011. This replaces the Standards Board’s Legislation. The standing orders were altered to reflect the change and accepted by the council. Register of Members interests was completed.” This is a legal obligation and has been completed.

I have in conjunction with D.M.B.C. been able to arrange for some activities to take place during the summer break at the Pavilion Tithes Lane. These consist of Street Dancing on a Monday afternoon, 2pm to 4pm, and football on a Wednesday afternoon 4pm -5pm. I have also arranged for a Crime Prevention evening to take place on 18th September 6pm -8pm Tithes Lane, hopefully before the evenings start getting too dark.

The disabled toilet in the Pavilion should by now have been moved and be more adequately sited. Unfortunately, it no longer met health and safety standards as the door must open outwards.

The date for the replacing of the very old (20yrs) kitchen has been arranged for 2.00pm Thursday 25th October to Thursday evening 1st November. This is half term and hopefully the work will cause as little disruption as possible. Could all users please be mindful to remove all their own pots etc before this date? The Pavilion will be closed while work takes place on the kitchen.

I hope you have all completed the Neighbourhood Plan questionnaire. The closing date was 31st July. This will enable the Neighbourhood Plan Steering Committee to pull data from your replies and hopefully strive for what is required.

As a matter of course could I please remind you to keep hedges cut back? I know we are in the growing season but I am receiving complaints of pedestrians not being able to access the footpaths, causing them to have to walk on the road.

Finally, I have made an application to Doncaster for the Road Closures for Christmas! 29th November will be the date of our late night shopping. Put the date in your diary please. The carol service as usual will be at the Buttercross on Christmas Eve.
