Tickled Squirrel Magazine is published each month by Tickled Squirrel Ltd. Reg. No. 9244499

Tickled Squirrel Ltd. accepts no responsibility for the services, goods or work which is provided by any advertiser. Although we do our best to ensure the content is correct we accept no liability for errors or omissions.

No part of this magazine, in part or whole, may be reproduced without obtaining prior written permission.

Many of you may remember us from a couple of years ago. From 2006 - 2012 we produced the very popular Mellow Magazine. However, personal circumstances meant that we quickly needed to return to the UK. But now two years later we´re back, newly married and with a brand new magazine.

So, let´s start with a great big welcome to this, our very first issue of Tickled Squirrel. As before, the magazine will be produced on a monthly basis.

It´s amazing how much the human race has become reliant on the Internet. I hadn´t realised just how important it was until working on this first magazine which was started in England, completed in Spain and most of the time with no connection to the world wide web. I´m even more surprised that I´ve managed to get the copy put together on time for the printer whilst at the same time searching for somewhere to live and also driving over from the UK with my daughter, my dog and my great friend Gail who became quite ill en route to Alicante.

We aim to be informative, fun and interesting, but to achieve this we need you to tell us what you want, and to help us do this send us an email to [email protected] and let us know what it is that you´d like to see.

Inside this month you´ll find a great selection of articles, some writers whose names will be familiar to you as well as a few new names. There´s a double page spread of puzzles for you to ponder over whilst sipping your vino on the terraces of the many great bars and restaurants as you take in the warming winter sunshine.

December 6th is Spanish Constitution Day and December 8th is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. To find out more about these fiestas there is a short article on page 24.

Christmas is now just around the corner. Whether we will be unpacked in our new home or had the time to go shopping for gifts remains to be seen but we would like to take this chance to wish each and every reader a very Merry Christmas and we´ll see you next month with the January issue.

Lorraine and Jerry

P.S. It´s great to be back!

The Costa Blanca Calendar Girls (and boys!)

On September 12th I received a phone call which went something like this . . . “Hi Lorraine, how´re you doing? Listen, do you fancy joining me in a charity project?” “Sure”, I said. “What is it?”

Thus began the four crazy weeks of The Costa Blanca Calendar Girls (and boys!). It started properly when Lorna and I met up to form an “action plan”, which in turn lead to us doing the rounds of local businesses. We chatted to them about the three charities we intended to raise money for, Scope, Bruised but not Broken, and Alzheimer´s Association, thereby hoping to entice them into sponsoring a page in the calendar. People were definitely interested so we decided to proceed. Next job, photographer. Did we know one? Could we find one? Thanks to a local gentleman who volunteered his services, we could. And so, with businesses on board and a photographer found, what was next?

Here´s where the craziness started as we began to make appointments for photo shoots, doing them in barmy places and at “stupid o´clock” times to fit in with work schedules. Finally, after many anxious moments, all was in place and off it went to the printers. At SR Printers we met Katie, an angel with an

abundance of knowledge and patience. The next week or so passed in eager anticipation. Would it be ok? Would it be good enough? And more importantly perhaps, would people like it enough to buy it? Well, now you can see for yourself!

The Costa Blanca Calendar Girls (and boys!) was launched on Saturday 15th November at a fun evening held in Bernie´s Bar, El Campello. The evening entertainment was supplied courtesy of Tony Francis, and Las Chicas of Alicante. Las Chicas can also been seen in a free event at El Campello Casa de Cultura on Friday December 5th. The Costa Blanca Calendar Girls (and boys!) is now on sale at the cost of €8.95 from the following locations: The Bruised But Not Broken Charity Shop & Drop In Centre (formerly The English Shop), Bernie´s Bar, and Kutz Hair & Beauty Salon in El Campello. Alternatively, you can order direct from Lorraine on 608 524 896 or Lorna on 673 899 257.

Everyone involved in this project gave their time freely (and bravely!) in the hope that you will like what they have produced, so please show your support for their hard work by purchasing our calendar. Thank you.

Jack was very keen on tractors, he lived and breathed them and he bought every magazine he could find - John Dere, Massey Furguson, he knew all the details. When a tractor fair was held nearby he just had to go along. He was in his element, there were tractors of all shapes and sizes.

The first tractor that really took his eye was a small red one and he happily climbed up and sat proudly on the seat, holding the controls. The dealer asked him if he was interested in buying one, it was only £20,000, but Jack replied that he didn’t have that sort of money and was just an interested spectator.

The dealer then asked him to leave, which he sadly did.

Jack then found a much bigger blue tractor on a different stand and climbed up to sit on

this one. Once again, the dealer asked him

if he was interested in buying this £40,000 model. He replied as before, that he didn’t have that sort of money and was just looking. The dealer shooed him away.

This treatment really hurt Jack and he went straight home, tore up all his tractor magazines and threw them in the bin. Even the model collection he had painstakenly built up went the same way and he then went to cheer himself up in the pub.

When he arrived, the bar was full of smoke (it was before the ban on smoking) and there were smells of cooking from the kitchen. Jack opened his mouth and sucked in, breathing in all the smoke and fumes. He then went outside and blew the polution out into the street before going back into the now, breathable pub. “That’s a nice trick,” the landlord said to him.

“Oh, it’s nothing really,” Jack replied. “I’m an ex-tractor fan.”

Making Changes

Can you give more? I don’t mean money, but there are important things in life that others don’t have that we can give, and it doesn’t cost a lot. What am I talking about? Almost everyone I talk to, because of the nature of the work I do, is under stress and getting mad about a variety of issues. I have been there, done it, and got the tee shirt, but I learned how to handle things differently and it really isn’t hard, and life is all the better for it.

So many of us are life’s takers . . . only seeing one point of view, one side of the coin, and determined to fight to the end to be “vindicated”. This can NEVER lead to happy relationships, or great self esteem, because we really KNOW that somewhere out there there is a better way of dealing with things to get a better result. So often we don’t understand the route to go along and as with many new experiences it feels uncomfortable to make changes.Did we realise how much better the world would be if we all stopped being so inward looking and started to look outwards, towards others around us? We could all add some sunshine to the world we are living in if we just decided to make every thought a positive one, and NEVER to think of giving up on something worthwhile, or thinking that we are through and finished. We all know someone who impresses us with the way he or she handles situations. I bet if you talked to them in depth you would find that they have had some major disasters in their lives, but they have coped and are here to tell the tale . . . if they bother to talk about the bad things in life at all!

Who else is in control of our lives if we aren’t? No partner or friend can make us miserable or depressed if we don’t want to be. We can all do a little, and by everyone doing a little, that amounts to a lot. It may not happen worldwide, but it can happen in YOUR world.

I like this story : A man was walking along the beach throwing back the star fish that had been washed up on the sand. Someone who was watching him asked why he was doing it, because there were thousands of them and he could never put them all back in the sea, so what difference could it make? The man smiled, picked up another one and threw it in, and he said, “It made a difference to that one!”

How true! Every little helps!

Don’t forget that if you try to handle things differently, smile more, forget and forgive more, it may seem that you are trying to swim upstream at first, and there may be moments when you feel you may as well go back to the old ways and the comfort zone, but remember, when tomorrow comes, there’s a chance to start again!!

Till next time!

Science Fiction or Science FactCraig McArthur

Science Fiction has been around for a lot longer than you may imagine. In this short article we will look at how the genre works on multiple levels, how you may have missed what has been staring you in the face the whole time, as well as how it educates and inspires the audience. When it comes to Science Fiction you either love it or you hate it. No matter what your personal opinion is there is no escaping the fact that without it in our lives the world wouldn’t be as technologically advanced as it is. But how could this genre have anything to do with our advancements I hear you cry? Well it’s quite simple. Thanks to the imaginations of novel, television and film writers, Science Fiction has introduced over the years several key applications/tools to aid the quests of the Protagonists. For example in the original 1966 series of Star Trek, the audience was introduced to the concept of handheld communication devices. These would later be adopted into our own lives and renamed first walkie talkies and more recently mobile/cell phones. In Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987) the crew used handheld computers which we now have in our lives as tablets or iPads. The Holodeck is a room where anything from a room to an entire world can be simulated, appearing real to anyone in the room. This is known to us now as a Virtual Reality Suite, a concept first seen by the general public in 1992. It isn’t just the imagined tools and applications which helped develop the human race at an alarming pace but also the themes/undertones of films/television series. Journeys to far-off lands, meeting alien races, learning about astronomy as with the early series of Doctor Who (1963) helped to inspire whilst educating the audience. It would be interesting to know the percentage of scientists who are fans of and have been influenced by Science Fiction. President Ronald Regan and the United States Government stole the name Stars Wars for its own Strategic Defence Initiative. At some point in our lives, Science Fiction has either influenced, aided or educated. Although there had been previous examples of time travel in fictional writing, H G Wells in his book The Time Machine (1895)

brought the concept of time travel to the forefront of public imagination. Using this genre, writers with strong political views normally unable to screen the subject matter may now slip past the sensors with the political messages dressed up and so appear less obvious. An example of this could be the first ever interracial kiss screened on Television courtesy of Captain Kirk and Lt Uhura. Another example is Battlestar Galactica 2003, a highly political drama, covering all aspects of refugee life e.g. water and food shortages, setting up a government, black market trading, abortion, equal rights and racism. In an ordinary world there might be complaints, if it was screened at all. Dressed up as a Science Fiction adventure in space, however, it is able to slip through the net, educating whilst not offending the audience, you are learning without even noticing it. Films like Mad Max II & III show us a world after we’ve devastated the planet. This acts as a warning and a not so subtle way of encouraging ourselves to stop the fighting, to end the wars. Gene Roddenberry, the creator of the Star Trek franchise had a vision for a future to which we should all aspire. He believed that every nation should and would eventually become one, bringing an end to arms, greed, hunger and all other forms of suffering. Hopefully we may one day achieve this. It may not be in our lifetime but perhaps for our children or grandchildren. As long as Science Fiction continues with its subliminal messages, we stand a chance of being better educated and more sympathetic to the plight of others. So, you can see how the Science Fiction genre is built upon multiple levels, and how it can cater for everybody’s tastes, you just need to look a bit deeper next time.

Mediterranean GardensLandscaping with palm trees, part 1.

There is no plant that evokes more the feel of warmer tropical climes than the palm tree, with the Coconut palm (Cocos nucifera) being the epitome. Lamentably, this palm cannot be grown here on the Costa Blanca, as our winters are too cool for the tree to thrive, it needs 16 + degrees centigrade as a minimum to survive. However there are many other palm species that look just as tropical as the coconut palm, that do very well for us. Ubiquitous and impossible to miss are the Washingtonia palms (Washingtonia robusta), Date palms (Phoenix dactilifera) and Canary date palms (Phoenix canariensis). The latter two of which unfortunately falls victim quite often to the red palm weevil that is wiping out huge amounts of especially the Canary dates, for which it has an obvious preference. We can grow successfully more than 100 species of palms on the Costa Blanca, more inland cooler gardens perhaps a few less, but with still over 50 suitable palm species there remains enough to choose from! Here is a small introduction to palms and their differences.

There are approximately 2600 palm species in the world, all occurring in tropical, subtropical and warm temperate climates. The northernmost species is our native European fan palm (Chamaerops humilis), the southernmost species is the Nikau palm (Rophalostylis sapida) from New Zealand. Both species can be grown here, the first needing full sun and the latter shaded locations.Palms can roughly be divided in two groups, the pinnate (feather) palms and the palmate (fan) palms. Coconut palms and Date palms are pinnate palms, whereas Washingtonias are palmate palms.

In pinnate leaves the leaflets are arranged perpendicular along a midrib, like a feather.A variation on the pinnate theme is bipinnate, in which the leaflets themselves are divided in smaller leaflets, the Fishtail palm (Caryota sp.) being an example.

European fan palm

Nikau palm

Caryota gigas, a bipinnate palm In palmate leaves the leaflets all sprout from the same central point

outwards, in some species these leaflets remain more attached almost up to the tips (young specimens of Livistona chinensis) whereas in others they are separate from the base upwards (Raphis excelsa) with the Washingtonia being an intermediate form. Costapalmate is a variation on the palmate theme, the palm fronds still resemble a hand, but the leaflets do not sprout from a central point but are divided along a short midrib (Sabal sp.) Apart from the leaf anatomy, palms are widely different in growth habit as well. Some species are suckering (forming multiple stems) like the European fan palm, the lady palm (Raphis excelsa) or the dwarf sugar palm (Arenga engleri) the date palm (Phoenix dactilifera) can do it at a young age before forming a trunk, but does not do that in all occasions.

Sabal palmetto leaf

Raphis excelsa

Other species grow solitary (with single trunk), like the Washingtonias, King palms (Archontophoenix sp.) or the windmill palm (Trachycarpus fortunei).

Apart from suckering and solitary palms, there are also climbing palms, most notably the rattans, which form long slender shoots that twist as lianas around stems and branches of other trees, most climber palms are also suckering and form new branches from the ground. Archontophoenix Trachycarpus

Plectocomia himalayana (rattan palm)

Another unusual growth habit in palms, although very rare, is branching. It occurs in only a handful of species, some of which are the climbing rattans but most notably the Doum palm (Hyphaene thebaica) from Northeast Africa. All palm species mentioned in this article (except the coconut palm) can be grown here at the Costa Blanca! In the next article I will discuss some more interesting aspects of palms and introduce some more fascinating palm species suitable for the Costa Blanca gardens.

To Facebook or Not to Facebook-That is the Question

Vince Tracy’s Music Ramblings

This Internet can be a great help and it can be a wonderful learning curve. As a Cavern goer in the 60s I am always interested in the musicians and DJs and cabaret stars who are appearing on Facebook pages. When I first started using Facebook it was full of kids and I wasn’t too sure how long to spend on the site. These days there are far more computer-literate oldies who have great stories to tell and opinions which are worthy of note. There are a number of Facebook groups with music as their main theme and I have many contacts on those sites. I try to follow what these sites discuss and then contribute when I feel it might be beneficial to the members.

However, there are some very far flung members of groups who were great names during their playing days. I wish I had been in the groups at the right time because many of the groups that went to the Cavern are still playing on the cabaret circuits. My favourite area involves the 50s and 60s music groups and there is a nice mix of expertise and enthusiasts. Whereas it was once the domain of the DJ or station playlist to choose the music there are now many of the fans now posting the music they like through Facebook pages. This is of great interest to me as it endorses the music I was choosing when running my radio shows. I always tried to bear in mind who would be listening and what they might like. Obviously, in the night clubs the public would tell you what they liked or disliked. If the dance floor cleared it usually meant it wasn’t the most liked song. The Motown songs were always floor fillers and I am happy to have been part of that era. Among my early favourites were such songs as I was made to Love Her, Reach Out, Baby Love, I Heard it through the Grapevine, Ain’t Too Proud to Beg, War, Stop Her On Sight...........I just loved Motown.

Other major periods for me included my visits to the Iron Door and the Cavern where the groups were just wonderful. As we saw in the rent Cilla drama on TV the queues outside these clubs were long. It was even quite interesting waiting outside to see which groups were arriving and how much gear they had packed into their vans. This happened both at night time and at the lunchtime sessions. One day I well remember the group playing was Herman’s Hermits and their front man was Peter Noone. He was upstaged by Bob Wooller the DJ playing The House of the Rising Sun when the group took their break. It was hailed as the longest 45 ever played on the radio. The producers were a little afraid the radio playlists would not allow a 4 minute track but it became a massive hit and I still sing this on my own gigs. Names that were plastered everywhere in those days for future appearances are now Facebook friends. I interviewed Harry Prytherch, the drummer with the Remo Four, for Onda Cero Radio some years ago. Last year I was in a bar on Poniente Beach in Benidorm and one of Harry’s relatives was over on holiday from Liverpool. He introduced himslf and told me he had heard the interview the first time round. I am still incontact with Harry who now runs a Facebook Page with many well-known musicians posting comments. I think Facebook has certainly worked for me.

That’s all from me this month. Please visit my website at www.vincetracy.com

Originally from Birkenhead, Vince began work at a local hospital radio station before joining BBC Radio Merseyside. Significantly influenced by Radio Caroline as well as great entertainers like Morecambe & Wise, Tommy Cooper, The Two Ronnies and DJs such as Jimmy Young and Steve Wright, Vince has chatted with hundreds of celebrities - musicians/actors/sports stars/politicians. His website lists many of them. To listen to his daily blog/podcasts go to http://www.vincetracy.com/blog9 or to view his website go to http://www.vincetracy.com

My name is Megan and I am a student currently studying at Exeter College in Devon. I plan to study Creative Writing next year at Falmouth University in Cornwall. December Film Review - HornsSo, as Daniel Radcliffe steps out of Harry Potter’s cosy shoes and begins to venture out into the unknown, we start to establish his new-found maturity in the supernatural fantasy

thriller ‘Horns’. And let me tell you, he’s certainly escaped the warm and chummy charm of Potter; it turns out he’s always been a devil in disguise!

Set in the breathtakingly crisp panorama of Canada, the film begins with Radcliffe alongside his angelic childhood love, Juno Temple. You may recognise her from various and contrasting screen roles in her most distinguished films such as ‘St. Trinians’, ‘Wild Child’ and ‘Atonement’, which also shares the acquired themes embodied in ‘Horns’ such as religion, relationships, love, and loss of innocence.

With no chronology, every scene of the film alternately switches between the past and present, with the present portraying the protagonist, Igg Parish (Radcliffe), in the aftermath of the violent rape and murder of his girlfriend, Merrin (Temple). Along with his flashbacks of the past, which depict Igg’s fragmented and religious childhood and the sceptical occasions leading up to Merrin’s death. Igg finds himself in a state of distress and isolation as doubts of his acclaimed innocence surround him and we follow him on a dark but satirical (and slightly drunken) trek through creepy dark forests and stunning Canadian landscapes on a quest to convince the people of his hometown that he isn’t quite the demon they think he is.

However, it can be hard to make the right impression when you wake up in the morning with two devil horns on your forehead… literally!

As the storyline progresses, things begin to take a comical but twisted turn, particularly when it comes to the confessions of the deepest, darkest and hilarious mental confessions of those who come into contact with Igg, A.K.A Satan.

In summary, ‘Horns’ is an exhilarating and innovative story which does exceptional justice to Joe Hill’s original novel, by bringing it to life and capturing the essence of its weird and wacky arrangement. You’ll find yourself tumbling through emotional mountains of hysterical laughter and melancholic tears of sympathetic sorrow, so either way, it’s best to get the tissues out. Despite all of this, the most significant point to make is that Radcliffe can actually pull off an authentic- sounding American accent!

Should you see this film? Why the hell not.

Celebrating The Spanish Constitution and

The Feast of the Immaculate ConceptionAs many of you will be aware, the 6th and the 8th of December are public holidays. Most of the shops will remain closed, although some food shops are likely to remain open, possibly with limited opening times. The two dates are often merged into a longer holiday, with people taking the 7th as a holiday as well, although this year the 7th is a Sunday. What is the reason for these holidays?

December 6th is Constitution Day and celebrates the drawing up of the Spanish Constitution. From April 1st 1939 until November 20th 1975 Franco was head of state in Spain. After his death, Spain was desperately in need of a new constitution and political system and the new fledgling democracy held their first general election on June 15th 1977. The elected parliament started to draw up a new constitution which was approved in a referendum by 88 percent of the population on December 6th 1978,

hence the date of its observance. As well as drawing up the constitution, the current flag of Spain, two horizontal red bands separated by a wider yellow band was also confirmed in the constitution.

An original copy of the constitution, signed by King Juan Carlos I is in the building of the Spanish Congress of Deputies in Madrid.

December 8th is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception and celebrates the conception of the Virgin Mary in the womb of her mother Saint Anne. It is widely observed throughout the Roman Catholic world and is calculated as 9 months before the date believed to be Mary’s birthday September 8th, which itself is celebrated as the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

As well as Spain, the 8th December is also the patronal feast day of Argentina, Brazil, Korea, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Philippines, the United States and Uruguay.

Bonalba Bowls Club is now six years old. During this time the club has come a long way and achieved winners in the Spanish Champion of Champions in men’s singles and mixed triples, as well as finalists in the Ladies pairs in the Spanish Nationals. Our current membership is 70, although not all of these are permanently based in the Costa Blanca. We have eight rinks, which during October this year were renovated, the carpets lifted, the concrete base levelled, and then the carpets re-laid. We have now resumed play on much improved surfaces. The club first began with just one portacabin and the rinks but the now improved facilities include a club house with kitchen, an enclosed outside area with seating, a lodge for the storage of equipment. The paving and artificial grass was laid by our own members. Meals for 40+ people are regularly provided for players in our league games.

October saw the start of our Winter and Northern League games where bowlers compete against other clubs across the Costa Blanca. However, some of our bowlers prefer social bowling on the home green where we also hold internal club competitions. The Bonalba Bowls Club also enjoy social activities which include barbecues, pub games nights, quizzes, horse racing etc.

New bowlers of all abilities are welcomed at the club and three free sessions with tuition from our more experienced bowlers are offered to beginners. Practice sessions are Tuesday at 13.30hrs, and Friday & Sunday 10.00hrs.

If you wish to try something new, want to meet new friends and enjoy some gentle exercise in the fresh air then come along to one of our practice sessions, wear casual clothing and flat soled shoes (no heels). If needed we can lend you some bowls. We look forward to seeing you at our club soon.

Find us at Calle Ressol No. 8. Bonalba. GPS coordinates are 38 degrees 26’48.76”N 0 degrees 26’19.13”W

MalwareThis is a term used when talking about anything that is on your computer, smartphone, tablet or laptop that shouldn’t be there. It comes from Mal, meaning bad, and ware from the end of the word ‘software’ and there are many different types that can cause you problems. They arrive through emails, from apps (programs) that you might install or from websites you visit, but there are things you can do to help protect yourself.

Self ProtectionInstall an antivirus program. If you have a computer with Windows 8 or above it will already have Windows Defender installed. This is considered by many to be as good as the other free programs available. Other free options include AVG and Avast, and others available from the internet.Make sure the antivirus updates itself at least once per day. New viruses and malware are being created all the time and your antivirus needs to be up to date.Allow your antivirus software to scan your computer regularly. Every day is best. This will help to catch any malware that slips in unnoticed - and this does happen. Be careful when you are on the internet - if you see a banner appear saying things like “Your computer is infected. Click here to remove” or “Your PC is running slowly, click here to speed it up” or any offer that you have not asked for for then make sure you don’t click on it and ideally leave the site. It might be innocent, but it’s unlikely to give you anything useful.Be careful when installing programs on your computer. Assuming you are on a legitimate site and downloading genuine software, you might still be faced with a long list of “options” and these can often include installing toolbars “to enhance” your browser (Chrome, IE etc). A few of these toolbars can be useful, but most are simply ways that the software creators can monitor your use of your computer and see what sites you visit. This might not seem a problem but it can be. So untick any options that offer anything you haven’t asked for.Don’t install pirated software. Many examples, if not most of them, contain unwanted extras that you really don’t want.If you receive an email that offers some free gift, suggests you click on a link, tells you you have won something, have a tax refund coming, your bank has been frozen, a package couldn’t be delivered . . . . then unless you absolutely know it is ok, delete it - even if it appears to be from someone genuine. It is very easy to fake an email, and we all know the old saying: If it appears to be too good to be true, it probably is.

What Can Malware Do?Some malware is more annoying than dangerous. It can follow what you are doing and cause advertisements to pop up on the screen. Others might be more dangerous and copy the keys you are typing, sending the information to a server where the thief can thus get hold of your login details for banks and other institutions. The more ‘traditional’ ones can delete files on your computer, even wipe the entire hard drive.Recently, a new type of malware appeared called ransomeware. This infects your computer and prevents you from using it. A screen appears typically telling you that you have commited some kind of offense - normally visiting a prohibited site or worse - and that you must pay a fee to unlock the PC. Often the page that you see looks like it’s from the FBI or a similar body so you begin to believe it might be true. If you get caught with this, seek help from a professional IT department, it can be fixed.

PCs or Macs or Chromebooks? You may have come across Chromebooks while browsing in a computer store, but what makes a Chromebook different to a PC or an Apple Mac? And should you buy one?

There are, of course, advantages and disadvantages in all things and the Chromebook is no exception. There are also a number of misconceptions that surround them.

You may have heard that Chromebooks only work when connected to the internet. This is only partially true. The programs that come with the computer work happily whether you are connected to the internet or not and allow you to produce and edit MS Word docs (Google Docs) as well as Excel spreadsheets (Google Sheets) and PowerPoint presentations (Google Slides). Documents you produce can be stored locally on the chromebook and will be also copied to password protected storage “in the cloud” - ie on the internet - when a connection is available. This synchronising of the documents with storage on the internet means the document is available to any device you have which has Google Drive installed. If your Chromebook goes wrong, or is lost or stolen, a replacement will get the documents for you and you can carry on where you left off.

Switching a Chromebook on is also very fast. The model I am using to write this takes around 10 seconds from completely off to fully up and running. The battery life is also great, up to about 10

hours, as long as I keep the brightness down a little.

There are apps available, many of them free, for email handling (gmail is built in but there are others), games, accounts, image manipulation and much, much more and they are easily added. Most of these do need a connection to the internet to work. The one app you won’t find is an antivirus program. The reason for this is that a Chromebook is basically immune to viruses because of the way it is designed.

If you wish to use programs such as InDesign (the software we use to produce the magazine), or perform in depth manipulation of photographs with Photoshop, then you need a PC or an Apple Mac. But if, like most of us, you need a computer to perform word processing, create spreadsheets, make PowerPoint slide shows, read and write emails and browse the internet, then a Chromebook can offer a great alternative.

For me, the fast switch on time, long battery life and light weight make it an ideal second computer for much of my day to day work. I still need a PC for my work designing ads, but the Chromebook is the one I reach for first if I need to quickly do something.
