Most people who live in this part of the world will be aware of these very dangerous creatures, but we feel it would be useful to remind everyone that we are now in the season when they could cause problems.

You can come across Processionary Caterpillars any time between January and mid - April. Formerly more common in Mediterranean Spain they are now spreading inland and further north.

The insect spends the warm summer months buried in the ground as a pupa, emerging as a moth around August when they mate and seek out a tree to lay their eggs on, fixing them as egg masses to pine needles. Four or five weeks later, the caterpillars emerge and immediately begin destroying the tree they are in.

At first they construct flimsy shelters made from a silk like material which stays hidden in the trees, but towards January, they begin to make a larger nest which can easily be seen from the ground. No entrances or exits are made, the creatures simply pushing through the walls. During the night, they leave the nest to feed on the host tree, returning to the nest at dawn. During the day they “rest” and use the heat of the sun to help them digest the food they have eaten in the night. Even sub zero temperatures don’t stop them travelling to their food although they do travel more slowly.

Usually by March they are ready to leave the nest and travel in long lines seeking out pupation sites in suitable soil, following a pheromone trail laid by the lead caterpillar. They are even able to distinguish between crossing trails and continue to follow the correct one. As many as 300 caterpillars can form a single trail in this fashion.

The danger from these creatures comes from their “fur” which is a layer of poisonous, harpoon - like spines that remain dangerous even after the creature has died. The hairs can also become detached from the caterpillar and will float in the air making for a very unpleasant experience - even the risk of inhalation which can be very dangerous.

Should one drop on you or your pet do not try to brush it off with bare hands as contact with the skin will bring considerable irritation and even an allergic reaction to the hairs causing anaphylactic shock similar to that which can by experienced by some people to bee and wasp stings. If hairs get into your eyes you can suffer from soreness, swelling and even a temporary loss of vision.

Carrying antihistamine tablets is a good idea should you travel in areas likely to be affected such as where there are pine trees.

It’s better to avoid exercising your pet in areas with pine trees during this time, and always seek immediate professional medical or veterinary advice should you or your pet have a rash or ingest hairs after coming into contact with these creatures.

What do you dislike most in people?

Is it people who wind you up the wrong way? Or maybe people who don’t agree with you and don’t see things from your point of view? Yet, isn’t that what makes us all different, because we all have a point of view?

I recently went to a seminar in the U.K. which was designed to help in dealing with “difficult” people. We were each asked to write down the things that we don’t like in the people we know. At the end of copious listings from everyone, the lecturer took the papers and asked us if any of these things

we had noted down were illegal. The answer was no. She then asked if they were immoral. Again, the answer was no. Were they wrong? No. Then she said, “Well, may I just suggest to you that they are just different?” There was stunned silence in the room as we all came to terms with that! Once again I have been through a learning curve with that concept. I really hope that I never stop learning.

So perhaps it is worth considering that the things we get stressed most about, as far as other people are concerned, is not that they can be blamed for being the way that they are, but we need to accept that they are just different from us. Perhaps acceptance and tolerance is a bit thin on the ground these days and we throw our rattles out of the pram for not having the reactions or results we want from people! Isn’t life tough?

Whatever our problems might be, nothing material is going to solve it on a permanent basis. Why? Material things are nice, but we get used to them and then start to look around again. The only thing that works is achieving a balance inside. Our attitude towards everything is what is the most important because that is who we really become and that is what people around us see.

Watch people and notice the expressions on their faces. Observe body language and try to pick up tips about how the people you are observing are feeling. The wealthy are definitely not the happiest, and the down at heel are definitely not all wretched. Some people wouldn’t be happy if they had everything the world has to offer, because they are still negative inside. A couple of years ago I had dealings with a lady who had everything - she said that herself, a fabulous home, position, wonderful children, adoring husband, money in the bank….but she was suicidal. I had the privilege of helping her to see life as she should be seeing it and the depression lifted so that she was in control, she saw the point and she made the mental changes.

When we get to the stage where everything and everyone is irritating us and pulling us down, maybe we ought to take some time to think things through and realise that, as complicated as life is, we owe it to each other to accept each other’s differences and to realise, perhaps, that they

have accepted ours!!

Continuing on the theme of palm trees, this month I want to highlight the palmate (fan) leaf palms. As mentioned in the first article (Dec. 2014) palmate palms share the characteristic that all leaflets (segments) on one leaf sprout from a common base, the top of the petiole. Fan leaves from the palmate palms are typically circular or paddle shaped, or shaped like a portion of a circle. The leaf may be divided into segments or entire, without divisions. Most fan palm leaves do have divisions into segments. They can even be severely divided like the spokes of a bicycle wheel, with the space between the segments extending deep down to where the segment emerge from the petiole. Some Rhapis species are examples of this. Or, they can be near complete without divisions or segments, an example being Licuala elegans.

People who have a little knowledge about the world of palms and can distinguish between feather and

fan palms tend to prefer feather palms for their garden instead of the fan palms because the feather palms are considered more tropical and the fan palms more desert palms. Although not true, the fact remains that one of the most

commonly planted palm species around is a desert fan palm (Washingtonia robusta) and that is probably the cause of this misconception on fan-leaved palms. I must admit that I am not a huge fan (no pun intended!) of Washingtonias either. Perhaps too common, and they grow incredibly fast, which is not necessarily an advantage as the canopy quickly grows out of view and you are left with a brown trunk in view with the green leaves high up for the enjoyment of the neighbours. Added to that, they are incredibly messy, producing tons of flowers, and then seeds several times a year which can then stain terraces and clog pool filters. Luckily there are many fan palms available that are much prettier and better behaved. All are suitable for small to medium sized gardens except the last one, which eventually becomes huge, dwarfing the canary island date palm (Phoenix canariensis) in canopy diameter.

Chamaerops humilis is the only palm species occurring naturally in Europe, and which is suitable for even the smallest of gardens. Trunk diameter rarely exceeds 15cm and its canopy width a maximum 150cm in adult specimens. Leaves are blueish green, there are even some available which are totally blue. They grow in clumps, so if you want a solitary trunk you will have to prune away the young sprouts from the base. Spraying with herbicide directly on young suckers will slow the emergence of new shoots and if the dose is kept low it won’t affect the main stem. This palm is incredibly drought tolerant and is not fussy about soil type nor humidity, even surviving sites that are waterlogged in winter. Be aware of the incredibly sharp spines along the petioles and only prune with gloves on!

Trachycarpus fortunei Similar to the European fan palm, the Chinese windmill palm has all the characteristics of the first but none of its spines! This is a good alternative if you want a child friendly garden.

Trachycarpus is also a strong plant, surviving deep frosts (they are grown as far north as England and the Netherlands) but they are less tolerant of drought and heat. They appreciate

regular watering in summer and in sheltered spots will produce larger leaves on longer

petioles, giving it a lusher look.The leaves are deep dark green with a silvery sheen on the

underside.

Rhapis excelsa is a popular pot plant adorning many offices, hotel lobbies and living rooms. It retains a modest size and bears low light levels with grace.

Raphis is a clumping palm that looks a bit like a hairy bamboo and is great to plant in shady spots, under large trees or on a patio for a lush

tropical feel.

Water well in summer, but in shade it is fairly drought tolerant. When planted in full sun its leaves tend to turn a paler green and get brown tips. Copernicia alba is probably the only Copernicia species that grows well in the Mediterranean. It occurs naturally in the Gran Chaco region, an area stretching from Colombia, Bolivia to Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina in the South.

This palm produces greyish blue leaves with a waxy surface. The wax was used by the ancient Indian cultures to produce candles (Carnauba wax).

Trithrinax campestris This suckering palm occurs naturally in the same area as the

Copernicia above. It has blue leaves and looks much like a blue Chamaerops. Although attractive, it is not child friendly due to its vicious long sharp spines which can pierce even the thickest gloves, so handle with care!

Pritchardia hillebrandii is a much friendlier and spineless fan palm. It is native to Hawaii where it’s called the Loulou lelo palm. Relatively fast growing and with graceful drooping light green leaves it is an asset to any garden! In spite of its tropical origin it handles cold surprisingly well, even taking a very light frost when older. Water well during the hot summer and you will be rewarded with an abundant production of new leaves.

Brahea armata is another blue leaved fan palm. This species grows naturally in the deserts of Mexico and the Southwest of the US, and it is incredibly cold, heat and drought tolerant. It can be grown in any location, but prefers well drained soils and a sunny position to be really happy. This palm is medium sized, does not grow too fast and is therefore a great palm for smaller gardens.

Livistona sp. The Livistona (australis and chinensis) are slightly larger palms, eventually reaching sizes similar to Washingtonia, but at a much slower speed. Livistonas occur naturally in Southeast Asia and Australia. The most common species and also ones that grow best here are the L, australis and A. chinensis. They are much better behaved and do not have vicious spines like Washingtonias, nor do they produce that massive flower and seed load. When you shave the trunk properly, the tree will immediately attain a tropical look.

The Bismarckia nobilis is native to Madagascar and an adult specimen is a sight to behold,

reaching humongous proportions, and should only be considered for the larger garden. It grows relatively fast when planted in fertile well-draining soil and receiving abundant watering during the summer. Think carefully

Music Ramblings

Originally from Birkenhead, Vince began working at a local hospital radio station before joining BBC Radio Merseyside. Featuring my radio guest Don Woods. You might know that I make podcasts each week, with various people, on various themes. One such correspondent is with my friend, Don Woods. Don sends me songs that he has written over the years and we discuss how they came about and what happened to them. Recently, we discussed a song Don was asked to write for Cannon and Ball in the late 1970s. Don heard nothing for a few months so he went down to Stoke where they were on tour. He weaselled his way into the theatre and got to meet them. He asked what the situation with the song was. They were obviously stalling. Eventually they decided to record “Wind beneath My Wings” which didn’t progress for them. So did Don give up on his song?

He eventually took his song to a local theatre where The Krankies were performing and asked the manager to give them the cassette. I hope you remember The Krankies, with little Jimmy being the lady of course! The Krankies got in touch with Don and said they liked the song, and they eventually performed it on the Royal Command Show. Just to show you how life can be, Don was on a show with them in the 1990s and told them about that song. They all became friends and Don has been writing songs for them ever since.

You probably won’t know Don. We first met around 1974 when he was a guest on my BBC Radio Merseyside show. We lost contact over the years but as luck would have it he became one of my correspondents when I worked for Onda Cero International (OCI) here in Spain.

Don was telling me of a time when he had been approached by the BBC. The BBC knew of his radio jingles and an executive asked him to write a novelty song for the Knowsley North by-election which was to feature nationally on Newsnight. The seat is on Merseyside. There were three politicians involved…Rosie Cooper for the Liberals, George Howarth for Labour, and Roger something for the Conservatives. Don devised a song “Rosie, George or Rog…who’s it gonna be?” The BBC were chuffed with the song and invited him to appear on the programme and sing the song which he did. They then did a follow-up programme “searching” for a lost species called Derek Hatton! I hope you remember these UK personalities!

Don is charismatic, inventive and also very shrewd. He had a career in Trading Standards running alongside his musical career and has also established his own music publishing company. He epitomises the things a young musician should be taught. Rather than be carried away on a wing and a prayer of aspiration and hope Don laid down the foundations of a solid career and enjoyed his music and creative talents. He decided how and when he would work rather than be at the whim of the music industry. By all means it is wonderful when a young person can have the courage of his/her convictions and be a full-time performer but it is good advice to have a back-up plan and to give yourself a solid financial platform from which to base your activities.

Heavily based on the biblical story of The Book of Exodus, Exodus: Gods and Kings recounts the ancient tale of Moses. As a respectable General and member of the Royal family in Egypt, Moses fights in the fierce and brutal battles of his enemies and oversees the work of the Hebrew slaves alongside Prince Ramses, who approaches his place on the throne as Pharaoh. Through the unexpected disclosure of Moses’ true lineage, word is hastily spread and the new leader of the Hebrew slaves, Ramses, forces his old friend into exile. If you’re looking for a short-lived film full of solidarity, peace and tranquillity then I’d have to say that this may not be the one for you. However, those in need of a thrilling quest to get their adrenaline racing, their eyes opened and their minds mesmerised are certainly ready to face the deathly expedition of ‘Exodus: Gods and Kings.’

Reflection on the Hidden Cellar Craig McArthur

You can imagine my surprise when I discovered a cellar hidden beneath the floorboards of the hallway and will no doubt realise how I came upon this discovery, when it was so well hidden. In order to fully appreciate what we have discovered I need to go back to the beginning.

The house I was working at was built by our Great Grandfather and had sat empty for the past fifteen years. Back in the 1960s they used to call it Rookery farm; I know you wouldn’t have known that until now. I was starting out my day shifting mould-covered furniture in the hallway to try and clear some space so that I might start chopping in the cable chases for the rewire. I stumbled across (literally) an old mirror that had seen better days, especially after I’d accidentally cracked it.

Leaning it against the wall I glanced in the dusty reflection and by chance noticed the start of a staircase going down toward a cellar. Startled, I turned to face the corner of the room where I’d seen it only to find nothing but a wooden floor. I was confused. How can a reflection be different to that of reality? Grabbing the mirror I began to tilt it this way and that, to see if it was just an image stuck onto the glass, but it moved with the room. I placed the mirror back down and went to grab a crow bar from my tool box. Then I set about ripping up the floor boards to see if there was indeed a concealed entrance.

To my amazement I discovered stairs leading down. On the stairs was a letter that appeared to have been sat there for many years. Deciding to read it later I put it in my pocket and rushed to my tool box to grab my torch. Shining it down the steps I couldn’t really make out anything, but I heard a noise, a muffled sound. I believed it to be field mice because this was the countryside. I attempted to slip my body between the floor beams to go and investigate. I will not tell a lie, I had put on a few pounds during the holidays so it was a squeeze, but you can relate to that I’m sure.

Finally I’d broken through, and slowly but steadily descended into the darkened depths of the house. The torch although working never seemed to illuminate anything. I put this down to using cheap batteries and soon I became surrounded by nothing but blackness. Occasionally I’d get a cobweb or two in my face which I don’t have to tell you is not a pleasant experience.

Suddenly I saw light ahead, and intrigued by this I picked up the pace. Before I had realised I was now ascending rather than descending. I’d reached my destination. I was in the same room as before.

“But how could this be?” I asked myself.

Looking around the room I noticed it had changed. To start with, the mirror was no longer leaning against the wall … it had been hung on the wall and it showed no sign of any damage. A ticking noise was also quite audible, I turned my head to identify it only to spot a Grandfather clock stood next to the front door. The walls seemed to be freshly painted and I could feel a warmth within the house, as though there was a fire lit. I began to panic. What was happening to me?

Approaching voices startled me. I quickly descended back down the stairwell into the darkness, but as the darkness enveloped me I realised that I recognised one of the voices. It sounded like me! I peered back up the staircase to look … I was indeed looking upon myself, only, I was dressed differently, more of a period attire.

Feeling scared I decided to attempt to get back and so continued down the stairs. It wasn’t long before I saw the light again and I emerged shaking from all I had seen.

Again, something felt different. Looking around me the house appeared to be different again. The walls were not plastered, the windows were missing, and above me, no floorboards appeared to have been laid yet. I decided to give the stairs one more go and plunged myself back into the blackness. I stumbled and fell down the stairs, banging my head on something in the process.

When I awoke I found that I was in the middle of a field. Holding my hand to my head I realised that I had gashed it and I was bleeding quite badly. Struggling to my feet I looked around me, trying to get a bearing on where I might be.

It then it occurred to me … I had gone back in time. I immediately recognised the road which passed Rookery Farm, or whatever this field is called now. I appeared to be stuck in the past and I didn’t know how to get home.

In the time since these events have occurred I have met my future wife, Samantha. She found me near to where I awoke and took me in, nursing me back to health, I have never left her side since. I love this woman. She has just inherited her father’s farm and we have plans to build a new farm house in the field, Rookery field.

If you haven’t guessed it yet, I am you, an older version of you. I write this letter on my wife’s birthday to tell you what lies in store when you take the same path as me. I know you won’t read this until after you’ve gone down to the cellar, but I just felt I’d give you the opportunity to decide for yourself, whether or not you would descend the staircase.

Email Address Farming

Anyone who uses email will receive SPAM, or unwanted emails. Some will be from ‘Nigerian Princes’ or ‘Lawyers representing someone who wants to give you money’. These are all, of course, poor attempts to part you from your hard earned money. Some SPAM emails are less obvious in what they are trying to do though. Have you ever received an email asking you to buy (for example) watches or other quite reasonable, but unwanted products? You ignore the first email, and then you get another one a few days later. You might ignore that one as well but eventually you will get tired of seeing them and notice an unsubscribe option at the bottom. Hurrah you think, I’ll unsubscribe and stop them coming.

Unfortunately, if you click on unsubscribe what you might unwittingly do is increase the value of your email address to other spammers. Spammers buy email addresses – unconfirmed ones are cheap, but an email address that has received a response of any kind is more valuable and so, instead of reducing the emails you receive, the unsubscribe option in these cases can result in you receiving far more.

Naturally, most of the emails with an unsubscribe option are genuine since it is an EU requirement to allow people to opt out easily, but the ones to watch for are those from places you have never signed up for or even dealt with.

Are You Helping The Spammer?

Have you ever received an email with a long list of email addresses at the top, where you might expect to see just yours? This is caused by the sender putting the list of email recipients in the To or the CC (Carbon Copy) boxes when they compose the email. Everyone on the list will be able to see the email addresses of everyone else on the list. If the list is simply an email from

one friend to a bunch of other friends then there is probably no problem, but what if the list is of people who belong to a club or an organisation? Or what if some of the friends would not want their email address listed to the entire group? Maybe they don’t really like all of them. Suddenly everyone gets your email address.

The problem can be worse than that though. What if someone on the list is in business in some way, or has a friend who is? They now have your email address and they know you are probably interested in whatever the email is about. Bring on the targeted email SPAM.

What should the sender do instead if they want to send an email to lots of people? They should use the BCC (Blind Carbon Copy) entry box instead. This works in the same way as the CC box except that only the sender can see all the email addresses. Sadly, many email programs hide the BCC box away and you have to choose to show it, but if you intend to send an email to more than one person it really is essential to find the BCC and use it.

If you are in business in any way, then it is even more vital that you don’t give away email addresses. It can be considered a criminal offense to give away or make available personal information about a customer – and that includes their email address.

Unfortunately there is little you can do to stop people misusing your email address in this way apart from try to educate them as to the dangers. But one thing you can do is stop using CC yourself and move over to BCC.

Emails – POP3 or IMAP?Almost everyone uses email nowadays. It has become a part of everyday communications and we wonder how we managed when we had to write a letter and wait for its delivery. Often when we are setting up email on our new computer or Smartphone we can be faced with questions which we do not understand, often because of the terminology used, and so we either give up or are forced to get help. This short article deals with two of these terms which you need to have some understanding of: POP3 and IMAP. Their meanings are explained as we cover each of them.

In the early days of emails it was important to define a system which all the companies involved in the new technology could agree to and which would allow an email sent by one program to be read by a different program. The method for sending emails that was agreed upon was called ‘Simple Message Transfer Protocol’ (SMTP). This is more or less standard and requires no real setting up. When receiving emails the first system used was called ‘Post Office Protocol’ (POP). This was the leader for many years and it is now it is on its third version (POP3). More recently, ‘Internet Message Access Protocol’ (IMAP) has become dominant and it is the difference between these two which needs the most understanding.

If you set up your email to use POP3, received emails will be downloaded to your PC or Smartphone etc and generally by default they will be deleted from the server once they are downloaded. Some email programs allow you to prevent this deletion and leave a copy on the server. In the case of Microsoft Office Outlook you can choose to delete messages on the server, either when they are downloaded, after so many days or when they are deleted on your PC. When you send an email, a copy of the sent email is (normally) kept on the PC from which it is sent.

If you opt for IMAP though, the emails you see on your PC or Smartphone are synchronised with the emails stored on the server. Whatever you do to the copy on the PC will happen to the copy on the server so if you delete the email on your PC, it is gone for good. Copies of emails you send from the PC are stored in a folder (often a subfolder within the inbox) on the PC but this is synchronised on the server as well so sent emails are also on the server.

So how do you choose which one to use? If you have a single PC and no emails on a phone or tablet etc., then it really doesn’t matter which you choose. If you use POP3 and have the emails deleted from the server once they are downloaded, then the only thing you might need to worry about is losing an important email should your PC go wrong.

If you have more than one device you use to send and receive emails such as a PC and a Smartphone or a laptop, then IMAP offers the potential advantage that whichever one you use, both PC and Smartphone (or laptop) will have the same information. Even emails sent from one device can be seen on the other one. But remember, if you delete an email on one device, it will get deleted from the server and on all other devices. Also, you might need to have more space allocated on your email server since all your emails are stored there until deleted by you, whereas with POP3 they could be deleted as they are downloaded, keeping space needs on the server to a minimum.

Nowadays, space is unlikely to be a serious problem (although you might need to ask for more space) and you should make your decision based on how you wish to use emails. If you like the idea of synchronised emails across multiple devices then IMAP is the one to use. If you have just a single device, then you can probably let your email app use whatever it has as its default – nowadays this is often IMAP.

Which Do I Use? It took me a while to see the benefits of IMAP but this is the one I now use exclusively. I love being able to send an email from my phone and still be able to have a copy of the sent email on my PC and Laptop.
