If you are looking for a place to grill, socialize or just relax after a long day of work, you may want to consider adding a deck to your home. A deck provides a place for a family to gather out-side and enjoy nice weather, have a good meal and spend quality time together. It can add to the value of a home as well. Raised decks can even provide shelter for exits from the home or stored equipment.

If you are going to build a deck, the first thing to do is to check with the local zoning office to investigate regulations on decks. With these regu-lations, you will know the minimum standards for building. This will also give you a chance to make sure you can build a deck. Once you have these regulations, start thinking about what pur-poses you want your deck to serve. Would you like a cooking space? Are you surrounding a hot

tub or a pool? Do you intend to have a patio set for meals? With these purposes in mind, you can begin to consider how you want to shape your deck. Keep in mind that building a deck without an access point from the house can create another difficult project-installing an access point. Using measurements of your backyard and graph paper, draw out a few possibilities for your deck. Outline the potential border of your deck on your plans and place anything you would want on your deck in the deck space you have created. This will help tell you if the deck you plan to build is going to be large enough and give you an idea of what your deck will look like when fully furnished.

When you have your design, begin investigat-ing how much you will need of various materi-als. Start with the standard regulations from your zoning commission. You will probably want to go above and beyond the regulations, though, as they are a minimum standard. For increased safety, use extra fortifications and quality building material. While you are in this stage, one important factor to consider is whether or not your deck is going to be attached to your house. If it is, you may also have to deal with siding issues and the actual attach-ment to the house. If your deck is freestanding, as many are, you will still have to accommodate for nearby siding and the structure of the house.

As you plan your deck, keep in mind that sev-eral accessories can be added. If you have stairs or an overhang, are you going to install lighting? Although accent lights can be added along stairs and wiring can be run for overhead lighting later, it is much easier to include that in the original plans. Are you going to be covering your spigot for your backyard? If so, how do you propose to access that spigot once the deck is constructed? Are you installing railing around the perimeter of the deck? Depending on the height of the deck, this may be mandatory by regulation. Even if it is not mandatory, it can create an attractive border as well as a safety feature. If there are any water elements included, how will you access control panels and plumbing if there are problems? If there are trees in the area in which you propose to build your deck, do you intend to build around them for natural shade, or do you plan on cut-

ting them down for the wood? These are just a few questions that may come up as you are fi-nalizing plans for your deck.

Keep in mind that the more complex your deck plans get, the more likely you are going to need a contractor. Also, remem-ber that the building per-mit requires inspections. While these inspections can be thorough, they are not a guarantee of any work. They are designed to help protect you and whoever may own the home in the future. If you have concerns about the safety of your plans or construction, consult a contractor for advice or help.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have two 2-year-old neu-tered canine brothers (I found out after the fact that it is not a good idea to get them from the same litter). They have lots of forested room to roam, but “Jake” -- the dominant one -- occasionally insists on peeing on the deck. I can’t catch him at it. Why does he do that, and how can I get him to stop? -- Carolyn V., via e-mail

DEAR CAROLYN: That can be tough to stop, since the deck is often considered part of the family living area for everyone, including the dogs. You’ll need to regain control of the deck area and remind Jake who’s boss.

Dog’s Marking Doesn’t Do Deck Any FavorsBy Sam Mazzotta

Whenever the dogs are off-leash, roaming through the yard and woods, block access to the deck and don’t allow them on until you have called them up the steps and clipped a leash on Jake and his brother. You may want to have a second person leash the less-dominant dog.

Jake may, at this time, attempt to tug himself over to his usual marking spot, and drag you with him. Give him a firm “no” and order him to sit and stay.

At this time you can take his brother inside the house while you work with Jake. For the next several days or weeks, the deck is going to become Training

Central. Work with Jake and his brother, separately. Whenever Jake begins to sniff around or tries to mark something, firmly tell him “no” and continue giving him basic obedience commands. When he fol-lows your commands, and especially when he stops sniffing and obeys rather than tries to mark, give him lots of praise and treats (if you choose).

To further discourage marking, clean the areas he has marked and treat with an odor neutralizer.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am confused about how much water to drink when exercising in hot weather. I learned that you should drink all the time during exercise, even when you aren't thirsty. Now they tell me that drinking too much affects your brain and can cause death. What's the story here? -- M.F.

ANSWER: This has to be one of those "it depends" answers. How much water or any other fluid is needed in hot water depends on how hard is the exercise, how long you do it, how heavily you sweat, how hot it is and how acclimatized you are to heat. It takes two weeks to acclimatize to heat. After two weeks, less sodium and potassium are lost in sweat.

Formerly, the advice for fluids was to drink fre-quently even if you didn't feel thirsty. That's overkill. You can let thirst be your guide most of the time. Older people have a somewhat blunted thirst sense, so they might have to remind themselves to drink in exceptionally hot weather.

To stay hydrated during heavy physical activity or exercise, drink 12 to 16 ounces of fluid three to four hours before exercise. The fluid can be plain water. It's also a good idea to take a salty snack before exercise -- pretzels, peanuts or crackers.

During activity, drink about every 20 minutes, as much as your thirst tells you.

If your activity lasts longer than two or three hours and if you sweat heavily, then you have to pay atten-tion to your salt intake. Marathon runners taught us this. A few marathoners died from drinking only

water during hot-weather races. Doing so lowers body sodium. That's hyponatremia, and it can be serious. Head-ache, vomiting, swollen ankles and feet, fatigue far out of the fatigue usually felt and disorientation are some of the signs of hyponatremia.

Sports drinks with sodium in them can prevent hy-ponatremia. You can make your own replacement fluid by adding 1 tablespoon sugar, 1/8 teaspoon salt and 1 tablespoon orange juice to an almost-filled 8-ounce glass of water. You have to make enough to last for the whole exercise session.

ANSWER: It's an in-fection of the ear canal, that small tunnel (about 1 inch long) that runs from the external ear to the eardrum. It's the

place where wax forms. Infections of the canal come about for a variety of reasons. They always hurt, and they sometimes cause a foul drainage.

Be sure to use the eardrops -- which, I'm sure, are antibiotic drops -- for as long as the prescription says to. Don't stop when the pain leaves, or the infection can return.

I know what you mean about the doctor being busy. Managed care has doctors on such tight schedules that the doctor-patient relationship is often lost.

Jeff Gordon's hometown could be considered Vallejo, Calif., where he was born, or Pittsboro, Ind., where he grew up.

Based on his record there, In-dianapolis Motor Speedway is an-other place where

Gordon feels right at home. He has won NASCAR's annual visit to the Brickyard a record four times. (As an aside, Gordon has won five times at Infineon Raceway, the track closest to his birthplace.)

Gordon's most recent Indy victory occurred in 2004. In the five races since then, though, Jimmie Johnson has won three times and Tony Stewart twice. Forty-eight races have passed since Gordon's last victory anywhere. He won at Texas Motor Speedway on April 5, 2009.

Still, a winless Gordon is better than most drivers who have won multiple races this year ... literally. Gordon, 38, ranks second in the Sprint Cup point standings, trailing only Kevin Harvick, and has more top-five finishes (10) than any other driver.

"Our team's been consistently running up front," said Gordon. "We just haven't had the car to win or all the pieces as a team to get ourselves into victory lane.

"At times we've had the car. For whatever reasons -- blame it on me, blame it on incidents, I don't like to point fingers -- but we haven't gotten to victory lane. ... We think we've got some things up our sleeve for Indy, but I'm sure that's what a lot of guys out there are thinking."

Only five drivers -- Richard Petty, David Pearson, Bobby Allison, Darrell Waltrip and Cale Yarbrough -- have ever won more races at NASCAR's highest level than Gordon. Three more victories would put him ahead of everyone except Petty and Pearson. But it's been "82 and holding" ever since the 2009 Texas victory.

Some have speculated that the end of Gordon's career is near. He disputes this.

Did you receive a $250 check from the government? Chances are that means you’re in the no-man’s land of the doughnut hole -- also called the Medicare Part D coverage gap -- along with the 300,000 others who also received the check. The money is to help with drug costs.

The Medicare coverage gap works like this: You must spend $2,830 for your deductible and drugs. Once you reach amount, the doughnut hole kicks in, and there’s no more help until you pay $4,550 out of pocket. Then your coverage starts again. Once you hit that amount, the govern-ment will send you a check for $250 in about six weeks.

Thankfully, this amount is going to go up. Until 2020, the Affordable Care Act dictates that the doughnut hole will get smaller and smaller until it disappears. And soon those who get Medicare and who are in the doughnut hole will be able to get a 50 percent discount on certain medications.

Meanwhile, if you’re in the doughnut hole, there are a few ways to get help. Ask your doctor if you can switch to generics. Find out if any drug companies are offering help with the cost of your drug at the Patient Assistance Program. Put that name in the search box at www.medicare.gov. Also check the state program. If your income is very low, call

• On Aug. 11, 1921, Alex Haley, author of "The Autobiography of Malcolm X" is born in Ithaca, N.Y. Haley's next novel, "Roots" (1976), was a fictionalized account of his family's history,

traced through seven generations. The novel was translated into 37 languages and won a special Pulitzer Prize.

• On Aug. 10, 1937, the electric guitar was recognized by the United States Patent Office with the award of Patent No. 2,089.171 to G.D. Beauchamp for an instrument known as the Rickenbacker Frying Pan.

• On Aug. 13, 1952, "Hound Dog" is recorded for the first time by rhythm-and-blues singer Ellie Mae "Big Mama" Thornton, a native of Montgomery, Ala., who started her professional career in 1941 at the age of 14. Four years later, Elvis Presley also had a hit with the song.

• On Aug. 15, 1969, a press party to promote the building of a professional recording studio in the vicinity of Woodstock, N.Y., turns into the biggest music festival the world had ever seen. The outdoor concert was expected to draw less than 5,000 people; instead, the Woodstock Music and Art Fair attracted a crowd of 500,000 over three days.

• On Aug. 9, 1974, Richard M. Nixon officially resigns as the 37th president. Minutes later, Vice President Gerald R. Ford was sworn in as the 38th president of the United States. After taking the oath of office, President Ford spoke to the nation in a television address, declaring, "My fellow Americans, our long national nightmare is over."
