Word arrives that Bobby Labonte will bereplaced, for most of the rest of the season,by Erik Darnell at Yates Racing (or Hall ofFame, its precursor; Jeff Moorad is still listedas the owner).

Labonte is only30th in the Sprint Cup points. The team is going no-where. The sponsor(s) apparently want the change, andfor a team that’s 30th in points, a sponsor carries quitea bit of sway.

Here’s another way NASCAR has changed. Back inthe late 1980s and early 1990s, NASCAR scoffed atthe notion that, in CART, drivers had rides becausethey brought sponsorships with them.

That happens in NASCAR nowadays. Apparentlyit’s not just drivers bringing sponsorships (as in PaulMenard being sponsored by the company that carrieshis name) but sponsors making driver decisions.

That’s maybe a bit overdramatized, but still ...Why do a few teams win all the races? One of the

reasons is stability and authority. The best teams —Hendrick, Roush Fenway, Gibbs — have enough toreally make hiring and firing decisions based on merit,not money.

In the end, it’s just another reason the rich get richerand the poor get poorer.

And there’s never been a better example of how hardit is to regain control from a skid than Yates Racing.

No one knows whether or not Darnell can improvethe team. It’s really hard to judge young talent comingup, partly because Sprint Cup drivers win almost allthe Nationwide Series races. Sure, it’s great for theyoung drivers to gain the experience of racing againstbig stars, but it’s not great for their self-confidence tobe basically running for 15th place every week, either.

In short, no one really knows whether or not Darnellis up to this task. All that’s known is that Ask.com ap-parently wants to make a change, and the change ofDarnell for Labonte is one Doug Yates could sell tothe moneymen. He was the compromise reached.

Hyper Dogs, Blind Cat Highlight Fall Books

This fall’s pet books are robust and entertaining, and even well-known au-thors from the other end of the bookshelf are chiming in.

A couple of weeks ago, I mentioned a book, “Don’t Dump the Dog” by RandyGrim, that offered advice on dealing with common but annoying behaviors fromdogs. Frustrated owners may also want to check out “High-Energy Dogs: APractical Guide to Living With Energetic and Driven Canines,” by Tracy Libby(TFH Publications). Dogs like Australian shepherds, Jack Russell terriers andBasenjis can be a real handful, especially for the inexperienced owner, and it’sall too easy to become frustrated with a spirited puppy. This colorful guide dis-cusses characteristics of several high-energy, intelligent breeds and walks own-ers through methods of understanding and training such dogs.

“Homer’s Odyssey,” by Gwen Cooper (Delacorte Press), is an account of lifewith the “blind wonder cat,” as Cooper describes the kitten she adopted at aMiami veterinarian’s office. Expectations aren’t high for Homer, who lost hiseyes at just three weeks of age, but the kitten grows into an independent dare-devil. It’s a charming story, and a nice weekend read.

Finally, novelist Dean Koontz has taken his first step into nonfiction and petwriting with his memoir, “A Big Little Life” (Hyperion). Koontz recounts thejoys of life with Trixie, a retired service dog with Canine Companions for Inde-pendence and the first dog he had ever owned. “A Big Little Life” is a big littlediversion from his intense works of fiction, and a welcome new voice to petmemoirs. If you have ever wandered through the infant’s section ofa particular store, you know how much stuff is out there fordecorating a baby’s room. From wallpaper to furniture tobedding, you can find all kinds of products to decorate ababy’s bedroom, and if you don’t watch it, you can wind upspending a fortune. If you have just found out that you’repregnant and you’re concerned about the cost of decoratingyour baby’s room, don’t despair. You can still create awonderful room for your baby without breaking the bank.

Paint is the one of the easiest and most inexpensive ways totransform a room. If you have the skills, you can draw a muralon one or all four walls. If that’s not your style, you can usestencils, stamps and paint pens to create a happy room. You

can paint the walls light yellow, for example, and add somehappy faces with a black paint pen or stamp on handprints invarious colors. Numerous faux painting techniques are availablethat will allow you to create any number of textures and designsfrom puffy clouds to paint splatters. While you’re working on thewalls, don’t neglect the ceiling. Remember, this is area the babywill see the most in the beginning when they are lying on theirbacks.

If you don’t like paint, you can try wallpaper. Keep in mind,though, that wallpaper will probably cost more than paint, andif you don’t apply it well, you may find your little one picking itoff when they get older. If you go this route, select a wallpaperpattern that will grow with your child and make sure thewallpaper can be scrubbed for those inevitable stickyhandprints, stray crayon marks and more.

For inexpensive wall hangings, you havenumerous options. You can hang up specialbaby blankets or quilts that you receive, orshop around for inexpensive prints and framethem for instant art. If you have kids already,you can have them draw pictures for thebaby that you can frame and hang up. If not,you can use kid’s placemats, baby cards andeven family photos for art. Inexpensivewooden shelves with old baby shoes andbottles are another idea. Whatever wallhangings you create, make sure you don’thang anything above the baby’s crib. There’stoo much of a risk that something could fallon the baby or the baby could pull downsomething on themselves when they getolder.

With floors and windows, you have severaloptions. If you can afford it, you may want toput down stain-resistant carpeting orlaminate flooring. Babies tend to spit up, andthe older they get, the messier they are likelyto be. Instead of traditional carpeting,consider putting down carpet tiles, which youcan easily change out should they get terriblystained. If you already have carpet and can’tafford to replace it, consider adding aninexpensive rug to protect the carpet fromstains, or make a floor cloth out of canvas.With window coverings, you can keep itsimple and top inexpensive mini-blinds orshutters with a corniceboard or valance, oryou can go all out and purchase or makedrapes. Whatever you do, keep in mind thatthe more light thewindow coveringsblock out, the betteryour baby may sleep.

When choosingfurniture for yourbaby’s room, thinksturdy and try to buypieces that will growwith your child. As your

child learns to walk, they will start to climb and you do notwant them climbing onto a rickety chair or table that couldbreak and injure them. You also do not want a room full offurniture that you will have to change out within a few years.While your child may adore their white dresser with theheart-shaped mirror when they are little, they might not likeit so well when they turn five or six and are into sports. Lookfor furniture pieces that will appeal to your child throughouttheir life.

As for bedding, the choice is yours. You can buy or makea layette set, complete with bed ruffle and bumper pad,or you can pick up some inexpensive sheets and add anice quilt. Whatever you select, keep in mind that it will besome time before your baby is actually old enough to useall of the bedding and enjoy it. Experts recommend thatnewborns be placed into a crib with as little bedding aspossible to protect them from accidental suffocation.

Remember, your baby will not be able to tell thedifference between a rug that cost $1 or one that cost $50,so don’t sweat the price of the stuff you use to decoratetheir room. Stick to your budget and create a design thatwill appeal to your baby. A room filled with inexpensivetactile objects will appeal more to a baby than a roomdraped in silk and other expensive fabrics. Let yourimagination run wild and have fun!

Sell It on eBay?My best information has always come from our

readers.A few months ago, I answered a question about

a set of 1948 AF trains. My advice was to sell it oneBay, which prompted a response from Jason ofLake Isabella, Calif. He wrote that my recommen-dation to sell on eBay would have been good ad-vice five to seven years ago, but no longer.

He added that in addition to the economy takinga tumble, eBay has been in deep free-fall the pastthree years, mostly triggered by what he calls theincreasingly abusive policy changes at eBay. As aresult, Jason is convinced that hundreds of thou-

sands of toy buyers and sellers have left the Internetsite. An additional factor is aging baby boomers whodie, retire or lose interest. Their collections are be-ing put up for sale, which means the market is cur-rently saturated with product that was previouslyconsidered hard to find.

Jason claims this saturation has depressed pricesand “toys that once brought over $1,000 on eBayduring the early 2000s are barely bringing $200 to$300 there today.” The upshot of all this, accordingto Jason, is that collectors new to eBay are now get-ting the deals of a lifetime, namely toys at depressedprices that are only slightly higher than they wereprior to the advent of Internet auctions. He concludesthat the adage “buy at a yard sale and sell on eBay”has been flipped on its head, since more and moreconsumers are making purchases on eBay in orderto sell to the traditional market.

Jason has a point, and I agree with much of whathe wrote me about. Many of the so-called values seenon eBay are much like the “appraisals” done on “An-tiques Roadshow.” As Ira Gershwin wrote in one ofhis most famous lyrics, “It ain’t necessarily so.” With

that in mind, both buyers and sellers should educatethemselves and not believe everything they see onflicking monitors or TV screens.

8 ounces fettuccine pasta, cooked, drained and rinsed in cool water.1 to 2 small-size green zucchini1 yellow summer squash2 medium-size carrots1 scallion1/2 fresh red pepper (optional)1/2 cup of your favorite vinaigrette style salad dressing or traditional Vinaigrette (see recipe below)1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheeseChopped parsley or basil

1. Trim off the ends of the zucchini, squash and car-rots. Use a vegetable peeler to cut the vegetables length-wise into long, thin, ribbonlike strips. When you reachthe inner seeds of the zucchini and summer squash, stopand continue slicing the other side. Discard the centers.Place all the vegetable ribbons into a large bowl.

2. Trim off the green ends of the scallion. Tear theminto thin long strips with your fingers. Add to the veg-etables.

3. Add pasta and toss lightly with your favoritevinaigrette dressing or prepare the basic recipe below.

Cut thin slices of the red pepper and arrange on top, ifyou wish. Top with grated Parmesan and parsley or ba-sil. Serve with French bread. Serves 4 to 6.

Extra tip: If your kids love apples, add one to thesalad for sweetness. Peel, core and cut an apple into 4slices. Peel strips from each slice and add to the veg-etable ribbons.

BASIC VINAIGRETTE

1/2 teaspoon salt1 teaspoon Dijon mustard1/4 cup white wine or sherry vinegar3/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil

In a small bowl, let one child whisk the salt, mus-tard and vinegar together. While whisking, another childmay slowly add the oil in a stream until the mixture iswell-combined. Makes 1 cup.

Store covered at room temperature for a week or inthe refrigerator for a month.

“The National Parks: America’s Best Idea, AnIllustrated History”

Most of us take our national parks as a given but,according to award-winning film producer Ken Burns,establishing them was an extremely radical idea at thetime. Imagine, if you will, passing a national law toprotect and preserve some of our most magnificent andsacred places, not for royalty or the rich, but foreveryone.

The idea was so revolutionary, it might never havehappened if not for numerous unsung men and womenwho joined forces with a handful of powerful moversand shakers, including John Muir, John D. RockefellerJr. and Teddy Roosevelt. By working together, theyaccomplished an almost impossible feat — a park systemthat would eventually encompass nearly 400 sites and84 million acres.

In their fascinating new book, Burns and DaytonDuncan recount the adventures, mythmaking and intensepolitical battles that helped bring about our national parksystem. In short, both the book and the 12-hour PBSdocumentary series it accompanies are a gloriouscelebration of what the authors call “an essentialexpression of American democracy.”

The images, scattered throughout its almost 400 pagesof text, are breathtaking. For example, Teddy Rooseveltis depicted with John Muir admiring the beauty ofYosemite Park, a crowd gathers at the 1915 dedicationof the Rocky Mountain National Park, FranklinRoosevelt is shown obviously enjoying himself duringa 1934 visit to Glacier National Park, and a small groupof hikers hover at the pinnacle of Chimney Tops in theGreat Smokey Mountains.

In addition to the riveting photographs, Burns andDayton examine how each parcel of land was boughtand added to the system, making this book the next bestthing to actually visiting these sites. “The NationalParks” is a magnificent book that is a fitting tribute toour National Park System and the people who helpedbring it about.

For hunters who really want to blend into thesurroundings, standard camouflage just won’t do. Whatthey need is a ghillie or yowie suit. A ghillie suit is aform of camouflage clothing designed to resembleheavy foliage, break up the body’s outline and addtexture. Originally designed for hunters, it has beenadopted by the military, specifically for snipers. Althoughthe suits are effective, they are very hot (the interior ofthe suit can reach 150 degrees), making themimpractical in some situations. In addition, the burlapused to make the suits is flammable and must betreated with some sort of fire retardant.

Ghillie suits can be purchased at sporting goodsstores as well as online. There are three parts to aghillie suit: the clothes, the netting and the jute thread.Ghillie suits take some to make and can be expensive.An alternative is to make your own ghillie suit usingdye, dental floss, sewing needles, spray paint and othermaterials.

If you are interested in making your own ghillie suit,you should decide first if you want a one- or two-pieceghillie suit. A one-piece suit is easier to get into andwon’t snag on anything if you have to crawl around onthe ground. A two-piece suit offers more flexibility inthe selection of clothing. You may use a pair of coverallsor a fatigue shirt and pants. When buying the clothes,make sure they are one or two sizes larger than youwould normally wear.

You will also needsome strong netting,preferably a blackvolleyball net or somefishnets. If you use alighter color of net, youwill have to dye it darkerwhen you’re dying thejute. You may attach thenetting to the suit usingwaxed dental floss orshoe glue. Apply shoeglue to the dental floss tokeep it from comingundone. You will alsoneed jute or burlap, andwhile you may purchasethese from a fabric store,it’s best to get them froma ghillie suit storebecause they have beentreated to make themmore fire resistant.

You should attach thenetting to the back of theclothing, cutting aroundthe arms and back andleaving enough to wraparound. You should dothe same with the pants.Lay out the suit with thenetting on top and thenstart sewing or gluing itonto the clothing. If youdon’t plan on lying downor crawling, you mayattach it to the front. Ifyou plan to be walking orcrouching, you should

definitely cover the front of the suit. After the glue dries,you can start tying the strips, alternating colors andavoiding the creation of patterns. Start at the bottom andwork your way up, applying a dab of shoe glue to everythree strands to ensure your suit stays together.

You now need to dye the jute thread. The colors youuse will depend on the environment you will be huntingin. Cut your thread into different lengths (18 to 24 inchesworks well) and dye it. Then attach them to the netting.Start by attaching one strand of the jute that best matchesyour suit onto the center of each netting square. Then,in a random fashion, add the other colors, again avoidingthe creation of any patterns. If you feel you don’t haveenough color or the pattern is not random enough whenyou are finished, you can lightly spray paint parts of thesuit and the threads.

Finish by tying small, foliated branches, grasses orvines to the suit using strips, cord or string. To help thesuit blend in better, use leaves and branches on the tophalf and feather down, using leaves or grasses on thebottom.

To ensure you get the most out of your ghillie suit,follow these tips:

• Assist the breakdown of your outline by attachingwider items around your neck and head when standingstill.

• Change materials on your suit as you changesettings.

• Use new materials as soon as the green ones dryup and turn color.

• Camouflage your shoes and gun with netting.

Out Of Sight Making a ghillie suit isn’t for everyone. It takes timeand patience to create a good one. If you don’t havethe time or patience, consider using a ghillie kit. Thesecome in five- and seven-pound sizes with pre-cut,dyed jute and netting.

ANSWER: An 87-year-old with adangerous heart problem could not playtennis three times a week and lift weightseven a few times a week. You have nosymptoms. You have a normal EKG andhad a normal stress test. Your heart healthmust be good.

When doctors listen to hearts with astethoscope, they hear a “lub-dub” sounddue to the closing of the four heart valves.Murmurs are noises heard between thosetwo sounds. Often they indicate narrow orleaky heart valves. The murmur comesfrom a disturbance in blood flow due tothe abnormal valve. It creates eddycurrents in the blood, which generatesound. However, eddy currents arise forother reasons, some of which havenothing to do with heart valves. Olderpeople often have such sounds, i.e.,murmurs. Those sounds are innocentmurmurs.

Murmurs Not AlwaysSerious Heart Trouble

Even if your murmur is a signof valve damage, the damagemust be slight. You have nosymptoms. You are more activethan people half your age. Thechance that a slightlydamaged valve in someone 87

years old would progress to a dangerouslydamaged valve is most unlikely.

Winterizing ProgramsSave on Heating CostsWinter weatherizing programs offer a low-cost or

Even if you don’t get any services fromthem, they’ll know how to contact county or stateprograms or can refer you to classes you can take.Contact your utility or fuel company. Often it willdo free “leak checks” to help you identify problemsin your home.

• If the area where you live is even slightly rural,consider calling Rural Development, a U.S.Department of Agriculture program. If yourweatherizing goals are serious enough to fall underthe category of actual repairs, you might qualifyfor a low-interest loan or grant. Whether you sign up for help through a programor do the work yourself, the mains goals are to keepcold air out. At the very minimum: Use a caulkinggun to seal around windows. Check your hardwarestore for shrinkable clear plastic sheets that go onthe inside of windows. Those sheets can do morethan you might think to keep cold air from comingthrough the glass. At the height of winter therecould be a 20-degree difference in temperatureon the window side of the plastic — cold air thatisn’t making it into the room.

With cooler weather, especially at night, you’llbe able to tell if you have air leaks at exterior doors.Just take off your shoes and check for cold air down

at floor level. Invest in weather stripping aroundthe doors if you feel a draft. Also check wallelectrical plugs to see if cold air is blowing in. Investin plug inserts, or buy the gasket kits that block thewhole wall plug.
