AT YOUR SERVICEby Kim O'Donnell, Director of Resident Services

Spring is on the horizon and activities are really gearing up at Trezevant. We look forward to strengthening our friendship with Crosstown Con-course as Dr. Scott Morris will be speaking at Trezevant Explores on the first Friday, followed by Randy Kostiuk and Courtney Munson presenting on the evolution of Crosstown-then and now,March 5th. An outing to Crosstown for a cooking class on crepes is happening on the 20th with a finale visit to Crosstown for the Art Gallery Tour and dinner at the Kitch-en Next Door with the Mystic Spiritual Offering, a real treat you will not want to miss, on the 26th.

We celebrate Fat Tuesday on the 5th with beignets and coffee for a morning wake up and a pancake dinner in the Bistro that evening. Ash Wednesday comes on the 6th with Mardi Gras music by Jeremy Clement. Trezevant will be going back to Calvary Episcopal Church for the Lenten Speaker Series with lunch in the Waffle Shop for five of the speakers, so be sure to sign up in the Activity Book.

As we spring forward on the 10th, plan to join your friends for dinner at Erling Jensen when they feature a gourmet, multi course, dinner at a very reasonable price. You'll get a chance to dance during the outing to Lafay-ette’s to hear our favorite Breeze Cayolle on the 13th!And on the next day, hear Jimmy Ogle discuss Memphis from 1970s to Now at the Pink Palace, part of the Bicentennial Lecture Series being offered there. Memphis is celebrating 200 years in 2019, so we aren’t so old after all!

Southern Authors will be hosting Niles Riddick, Vice Provost of U of M Lambuth, featuring “Reading the Coffee Grounds And Other Stories” “which are grounded in empathy with everyday people trying to get on in life” . This speaker will be most entertaining!

We hope you enjoy the new appointments to the décor in our common areas as we bring Spring time to our home here at Trezevant.

Consult your calendars for dates, details and more.

Our speaker for the Spiritual Speakers Series scheduled for March has had to cancel due to family health issues. However, as it turns out this is fortuitous since the first Tuesday (March 5) night is Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday – the time when we traditionally clear our larders of fat and sugar in preparation for a Lenten fast. In recognition of this tradition, David Edwards, the Director of our Food Services, will be offering a traditional pancake dinner alternative that evening. The Ash Wednesday service will be held the next day, March 6, at noon in St. Edward Chapel. Perhaps some clarification about what Lent is would be help-ful. Although Lent is a penitential and reflective season, it is not intended as a gloomy, sad, or self-flagellating one. It is simply a time for a thorough “clos-et-cleaning” of the soul as we prepare for the glorious season of resurrection, Eastertide. To offer you a way to begin your own closet-cleaning, I recommend our weekly Guided Meditation time. It is offered each Wednesday in our Chapel from 2:15 until 2:45. Get a head start and begin now! It will do you good, body, mind, and spirit. During the Lenten season – and in keeping with this season -- the Chaplain’s class will be “Embracing Forgiveness: What It Is and What It Isn’t.” Led by resident and Spiritual Director Linda Douty Mischke and me, it will be based on a Five-Session Study using a DVD series by the Rev. Barbara Cawthorne Crafton. The series begins March 13 and continues through April 10 at 3pm on Wednesdays. Finally, I commend to you the following Lenten “fast,” one to which we can all aspire. It comes from one of my favorite Lenten meditations: Fast from judging others; feast on Christ dwelling in them.Fast from fear of illness; feast on the healing power of God.Fast from words that pollute; feast on speech that purifies.Fast from discontent; feast on gratitude.Fast from anger; feast on patience.Fast from pessimism; feast on optimism.Fast from negatives; feast on alternatives.Fast from bitterness; feast on forgiveness.Fast from self-concern; feast on compassion.Fast from suspicion; feast on truth.Fast from gossip; feast on purposeful silence.Fast from problems that overwhelm; feast on prayer that sustains.Fast from worry; feast on faith.God’s blessings on each and every one of you.

BE WELLby Valerie Smithers, RN

March will be a month filled with enriching wellness-promoting activities for Trezevant residents. “Crosstown Now” will be a focus here during the month. We will learn how things have continued to develop and grow at Crosstown, and how we, and all Memphians, can benefit from the pres-ence of Crosstown. Church Health suggests that a balance in life of the following research based categories can lead individuals to reach maximum fulfillment. Pa-tients, volunteers, clients, staff, students, residents and visitors at Church Health, and throughout Crosstown Concourse and Memphis, are encour-aged to seek this balance. Let’s seek this, too, as all contribute to a well rounded life. Friends and Family Movement Nutrition Medical Emotional Faith Life Work

• We have four events on the calendar to update us on the evolving land-scape and current happenings at Crosstown.

• Dr. Scott Morris will speak to Trezevant Explores speaker on Friday, March 1 at noon in the PAC.

• A visual update on current Crosstown businesses, entertainment, edu-cation, healthcare and more. PAC on Tuesday, March 5 from 3:30-4:30

• Cook and taste crepes in a cooking class in the Crosstown state of the art commercial demo kitchen. No charge for 25 people. Wednesday, March from 4-5:30.

Again, our group heads to Crosstown on for an extended visit to tour the art gallery, eat dinner at The Kitchen Next Door, and attend The Mystic, a spiritual service with reflections and music by Dr. Morris and other reli-gious and contemporary music leaders. Tuesday, March 26 from 4-7pm.Please fill your March calendar with these and other opportunities to make friends, celebrate family, eat and move well, work to serve others, and take care of your body, mind and spirit. Here at Trezevant, you have it all for the taking. Enjoy!

TIDINGS TIDBITSby Teresa Johnson, Communications & Program Coordinator

There is so much going on at Trezevant!! We try to keep everyone in-formed of all the events, but I still hear 'I didn't know about that!! I would have planned on being there!' Here are the best ways to stay abreast of what's happening on campus:

• Check the bulletin board in the Resident Services hallway for the weekly menu, the weekly and monthly calendars, upcoming event flyers, and important community notices. And, you can sign up for events in the Activity Book while you're there!

• Look for flyer stands located in the common areas, like the elevator lobby, the Bistro lobby, in front of The Little Store and in front of the Performing Arts Center.

• Monthly & Weekly Calendars are available in the Library. Monthly calendars are printed at the end of each month for the next month. Weekly calendars are printed on Fridays for the next week, and contain updated information.

• Digital signs play on the TVs in the Manor Lobby, near the elevators in the Manor and the Place. You can take a comfy seat nearby and catch up on the Trezevant menus, announcements and events, as well as na-tional news and local time and weather.

• And easiest of all, you can get the same digital signs right in your home! Be sure to watch Comcast Channel 991 each morning while you're drinking your coffee to plan your day! Helpful Hint: Press your Pause button on your remote to read the signs in your own time, and press Resume when you're done to keep going!

If you are having computer issues, we know some experts that can help you with that! Just let Resident Services know and we'll provide the contact information.

Are you an extrovert? Are you tech savvy? Do you love being a part of everything on campus? Do you have time to volunteer? Be a Resident Ambassador! If this describes YOU, please call, email or stop by my office to discuss the possibilities of contributing to our community FUN!!
