Our Holy Redeemer: Where Coming Home is What it’s All About!
1911 - (and has been for one hundred years!) - 2011
A Message from the Pastor
“On the twelfth day of Christmas”, you may have heard that “my true Love gave to me:
Twelve Drummers Drumming: twelve tenets of the Apostles Creed, twelve Fruits of the Holy Spirit; Eleven Pipers Piping: the eleven Apostles who remained after Judas’ betrayal; Ten Lords-a-Leaping: the Ten Commandments; Nine Ladies Dancing: nine choirs of Angels; Eight Maids-a-Milking: eight Beatitudes; Seven Swans-a-Swimming: seven Sacraments, seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit; Six Geese-a-Laying: six days God created the world; Five Gold Rings: five books of the Pentateuch; Four Calling Birds: four Gospel writers; Three French Hens: three Divine Persons of the Blessed Trinity; Two Turtle Doves: two natures in Jesus, two Testaments; (and a) Partridge in a Pear Tree”: Jesus and the Cross.
And while that makes for a popular centuries old Christmas Carol, and perhaps even a great Catechetical tool, we are told in Sacred Scripture that on the twelfth day of Christmas:
“Magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem … and behold, the star that they had seen at its rising preceded them, until it came and stopped over the place where the Child was. They were overjoyed at seeing the star, and on entering the house they saw the child with Mary His mother. They prostrated themselves and did Him homage. Then they opened their treasures and offered Him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.”
While it was only after they saw/recognized the “newborn King of the Jews” that the Magi offered Him gifts, it is important to note that they were already prepared/prepared for their meeting. They studied, they asked questions, and they searched diligently until they found Him. And so: Are we prepared to meet Jesus? Do we study the things that can lead us to Him, like our Bibles and our Catechisms? Do we ask questions of others who can lead us to Him, like the Saints? Are we overjoyed at the sight of the place where He is? What do we do when we enter that place? Do we prostrate ourselves and do Him homage, or do we busy ourselves paying homage to others? And what kind of gifts do we give Him when we open our treasures? These are just some of the questions (see page 3) we should ask ourselves before we come home to Our Holy Redeemer, so that we might recognize Him not only on the twelve days of Christmas, but every day of the year!

"¿Qué pasaría si María y José fueran a llamar a mi puerta?

THROUGH THE YEAR OF FAITH WITH THE HOLY FATHER
General Audience 24 October 2012
(continued from 30 December 2012)
“Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Faith is a gift of God, but it is also a profoundly free and human act. The Catechism of the
Catholic Church says so clearly: “Believing is possible only by grace and the interior help of the
Holy Spirit. But it is no less true that believing is an authentically human act... contrary neither to
human freedom nor to human reason” (n. 154). Indeed, it involves them and uplifts them in a
gamble for life that is like an exodus, that is, a coming out of ourselves, from our own certainties,
from our own mental framework, to entrust ourselves to the action of God Who points out to us His
way to achieve true freedom, our human identity, true joy of the heart, peace with everyone.
Believing means entrusting oneself in full freedom and joyfully to God’s providential plan for
history, as did the Patriarch Abraham, as did Mary of Nazareth. Faith, then, is an assent with
which our mind and our heart say their “yes” to God, confessing that Jesus is Lord. And this “yes”
transforms life, unfolds the path toward fullness of meaning, thereby making it new, rich in joy and
trustworthy hope.
Dear friends, our time needs Christians who have been grasped by Christ, who grow in faith
through their familiarity with Sacred Scripture and the Sacraments. People who are, as it were, an
open book that tells of the experience of new Life in the Spirit, of the Presence of that God Who
supports us on our way and opens us to Everlasting Life. Many thanks.”
On most Sundays of the Year, Mass-goers who actively participate in the Sacred Liturgy would recognize that during the Prayer of the Faithful we pray for the intentions of the Pope. If you would like to pray for those intentions during the week, please visit the following website:
http://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/vatican-daily-issues-popes-prayer-intentions-for-2013/.
If you do not have internet access then the Pope's January intentions are listed below:
GENERAL:
That during this “Year of Faith” Christians may deepen their knowledge of the mystery
of Christ and joyfully bear witness to the gift of faith in Him.
MISSIONARY:
That the Christian communities of the Middle East, which frequently suffer discrimination,
may receive the strength of fidelity and perseverance of the Holy Spirit.

SCRIPTURE REFLECTION
Today’s Gospel narrates the ancient story of the Magi from the East that following a star go to Bethlehem to worship the New Born King of Israel and offer Him their gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. Like the Magi from the East we too are seeking for Jesus. We too follow the star of faith that shines in our hearts. We too bring Him our gifts, our gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
“Alas,” you say, “I do not have any gold, or frankincense and myrrh to offer Him.” But, you see, you do! God has given you gifts. Remember the little drummer boy of the song? He also felt he had no gifts to bring to the Newborn King, but then, he remembered that he could play his drum, and that’s exactly what he did. He played his drum for the King, and the song goes on to say that “Mary nodded” her approval, and the King himself smiled at him. So, what can you do well? What is it that you enjoy doing? What is it that people compliment you when you do it? That is your gift! Let your Faith Star lead you to Jesus and then offer Him the gift or gifts God has given you. Just like the Magi of Old, and the drummer boy of the song, you too will be rewarded beyond measure. (See Matthew 2:1-12)
Hail Mary, full of Grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women,
and blessed is the Fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners
now, and at the hour of our death. Amen.

GOLD, FRANKINCENSE, AND MYRRH/TIME, TALENT, AND TREASURE The Scriptures tell us that an early encounter with Our Holy Redeemer led magi from the east to prostrate themselves, do Him homage, open their treasures, and offer Him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh (cf. Saint Matthew II: 1 -12). In many ways, the Sunday Bulletin of Our Holy Redeemer tells us the same thing: people enter the house (church), prostrate themselves (genuflect, enter their pew, and kneel), open their treasures (their hearts), and offer Him gifts (time, talent, and treasure).
Please accept my gratitude for your offering. Whether it’s the 25 cents (and more) a week that helps me to satisfy the material and spiritual needs of more than three thousand registered families, or the Catholic Ministries Appeal which helps me to express our indebtedness to Bishop Murphy while at the same time helping him to provide those same needs to people beyond the borders of our Parish, your offering is making a difference; or rather “you” are making a difference!
Let us pray that more people will choose to come home, enter the house, encounter Jesus, prostrate themselves, open their treasures, offer Him gifts, and make a difference with us in 2013.

PRAYERS FROM THE ROMAN MISSAL THAT YOU MAY NEVER HEAR (AND A WORD FROM OUR SAINTS)
“When the brightness of a new star had led three wise men to worship Jesus, they did not see Him ruling over demons, not raising the dead, not restoring sight to the blind or mobility to the lame or speech to the dumb, nor in any action of Divine power. They saw Him, rather, as a Child - silent, at rest, placed in the care of His Mother - in a situation where there appeared no indication of power.
From this lowliness, however, a great miracle was presented. Consequently, the mere sight of that Sacred Infancy to which God the Son of God had adapted Himself was bringing to their eyes a preaching that would be imparted to their ears. What the sound of His voice was not yet presenting, the activity of sight was teaching them. For the entire victory of the Saviour, the One that overcame the devil and the world, began in humility and ended in humility. Its appointed time began under persecution and ended under persecution. Neither the endurance of suffering was lacking to the child, nor the gentleness of a child to the One who would suffer. For, the Only-Begotten Son of God undertook by a single inclination of His majesty both the will to be born as a human being and the ability to be killed by human beings.
Almighty God, therefore, made our extremely bad situation good through His unique lowliness and "destroyed death" along with the author "of death." He did not refuse anything that His persecutors brought down on Him. In obedience to the Father, He bore the cruelties of violent men with the meekest docility. How humble we ought to be, then, how patient, we who, when we meet with any distress, never undergo anything we do not deserve! "Who will boast that they have a pure heart or that they are clean from sin?" (Prov. 20, 9). Blessed John says, "If we say we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us" (1 Jn. 1, 8).
Who will be found so free from guilt that they have not in themselves anything for justice to condemn or mercy to forgive? Consequently, dearly beloved, the whole learning of Christian wisdom consists not in abundance of words, not in cleverness at disputing, not in desire for praise and glory, but in a true and willing humility. This is what the Lord Jesus Christ chose and taught from within the womb of His Mother right up to His torment on the Cross - by enduring everything with fortitude. When the disciples, as the Evangelist says, arguing among themselves as to "which one of them would be greater in the Kingdom of Heaven, [Jesus] called a little child and stood him in their midst and said: 'Amen, I say to you, unless you change yourselves and become like little children, you will not enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Whoever, therefore, humble themselves like this child will be the greater in the Kingdom of Heaven."
Christ loves the Childhood that He first took up in both soul and body. Christ loves childhood, the teacher of humility, the rule of innocence, the image of gentleness. Christ loves childhood, to which He directs the characters of older people, to which He brings back old age. Those whom He would raise up to an Eternal Kingdom He disposes to follow His own example." – Saint Leo the Great
Collect O God, Who on this day
revealed Your Only Begotten Son to the nations by the guidance of a star,
grant in Your mercy that we, who know You already by faith,
may be brought to behold the beauty of Your sublime glory. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son,
Who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever. Amen

NEWS FROM THE DE LA SALLE SCHOOL (516) 379-8660
The new entry way to our school is obvious and welcoming. It has generated many favorable comments. Now, if you look up above the entrance you will see that a stained glass window has been installed. It depicts a young student with St. John Baptist De La Salle, Patron Saint of Teachers, Founder of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, and man for whom our school is
named. The window was originally in the chapel at La Salle Military Academy in Oakdale. After a 118 year run that institution graduated its last high school class in 2001. We are grateful that the window now has an honored place in its new home in Freeport as the Lasallian legacy on Long Island continues here.
Pope Benedict invites us to the Year of Faith that began in October via his letter Porta Fidei, the “door of faith” (Acts 14:27). Janus, the Roman god of beginnings and transitions, lends his name to the month that begins our calendar year. How fitting that when our students returned to class on 2 January and crossed the threshold of our school door they saw the benevolent eyes of St. La Salle looking down on them and his fraternal embrace reaching out to them. Each day they enter a sacred place intended to nurture their faith and to transform their lives. May each student and graduate of The De La Salle School be guided by God’s Grace in this New Year and may 2013 be a time of blessing for each of us!
