It’s neither here or there, not zero nor one, not hot nor cold, not t

nor below. We are all most caught in the web of the average.

If you are lucky to have lived in the hub like me, you can’t help traca spider. As a small child, I have watched this little creature build

empire. Even as an adult, the image does not elude my thought, as

spider walk as if moving forward, yet moving backward and as

working upward yet on the downturn and with the most intrigu

feeling of the weight it carries on its back. This fleet

characteristics is not a rare kind for spiders coupled with their po

vision but it is a simile character of a man moving into the future b

dragging the whole of the past along and like the spider, ties itself

the centre of the web of the average and extends his hands out to t

next average and looks forward to the topmost average.

We live in a world of conformity and like the spider webs-on in wait f

its prey; we are often webbed into the conformity for the avera

The average would not believe that one day an iron cast would fly

the air carrying humans in itself; neither did the possibility to reac

once distant land in a hour a near thought.

The conformity for the average begins in the labour room, as nursran helter skelter to force a new born child to cry. A mother ge

worried for a child who cannot stand to his/her feet due to a docto

timetable and a teacher often writes a child off because h

performance isn’t similar with the others.

A child begins to grow with the image to dress as she is expected

talk the way they want it and live in the standard that was writt

although, not so bad, the world wants orderliness.

However, in the midst of this perfection and crave for conformity, t

originality of the mind is lost, the power of the brain

underestimated, and the hope of a man is bury in the mud.

It’s saddening when the next solution to a mathematic problem sim

withdraws from calculus class for a music one because the teach

noted, “lacks capacity”. A girl quits her vocal lesson for a laborato

session because her father once yelled, “you have a horrible voice”.

In the quest to stand for conformity, visions have been aborted

story is left untold, a song is left unheard, a book is left unpublish

an invention is buried and a company is never brought to place. H

horrible would life be, if those have made giant steps decided to cr

into their shell and sleep. How unhealthy would life have been if ev

doctor and nurses have chosen to stay off school? How dark will

world remain, if Einstein have succeeded being average. How tiring

journeys would be if the Wright brothers have chosen to live w

conformity. This is the way we do it. This is the standard.

The most outstanding genius of our times are classified as weird

awarded heros or legends of all times because they chose to live

their dreams and unbolted the nuts of conformity. The m

outstanding software “the brain” of all that was created is d

tailored to work like a computer. Our intelligence is often measu

with grades. Bill gates of all time did prove them wrong. Ford shothem, you don’t have to have the IQ limit. Like the little creed of

average child…

I don’t cause teachers trouble;

My grades have been okay.

I listen in my classes.

I’m in school every day.

My teachers think I’m average;

My parents think so too.

I wish I didn’t know that, though;There’s lots I’d like to do.

I’d like to build a rocket;

I read a book on how.

Or start a stamp collection…

But no use trying now.

’Cause, since I found I’m average,

I’m smart enough you see

To know there’s nothing special

I should expect of me.

I’m part of that majority,

That hump part of the bell,

Who spends his life unnoticed

In an average kind of hell…Mike Buscemi

Like the computer hardware is uploaded with soft computer language

our minds are programmed for the average. It’s at the shopping mall

stating loose wait in three days, and at the bank doorstep, meet the

standard, take a loan.

Like a shadow, its follows a child to school in the morning, sleeps with

woman at night, wakes the man in the morning, bath a boy among pe

lures a girl in the dark, pulls an addict to drugs, waves a shopaholic ev

day, makes tea for its owner and drives them all to the shores of a

called “SAME”, “COMMON”, “DUPLICATE”, “UNIFORM”, “EQUAL”. T

all match with the common goal to destroy “Unique”.

The world has programmed our mind in such a way that we are of

bound by the limitations of our colour, our religion, our face, our cultu

our beliefs, our age, our sex, and ultimately our background. Who wo

believe that a black boy who lived in Hawaii at a time would become

president of the United State? This reminds me of the Olympic Gam

every one running the race with a limit in mind. If I can just run the r

in three minutes, the mind keeps ringing. Who says you cannot run

race in a minute. We are bound by our perspective, tied in our

opinions and beaten in our limited thinking. We are trapped in the fea

being different.

I remember giving up a dream to earn first class bachelors qualificat

because a lecturer once said; it was not possible and however too la

Bound in my thinking, I watched a fellow friend, who refused believin

the average rise to have it. I remember pulling out of several ro

because someone once said, it is a man’s duty, women don’t and I c

count the number of times, I have heard, it can’t be done. But the ba

for success only began when I said to myself, I can. Nothing

Impossible. I will.

Even if, we have been programmed to be average, do we continue to

in the average? We are all created to solve a problem and until we br

free from the mind of the average, we would be bound in the thought

life, hoping and wishing for the better. If you are ready to take the s

with me, it’s time to download the mind of the average and upload

mind of excellence. It’s time to break free from the ties of the w

called average.
