College Application Reminders from the Guidance Office

SUBMISSION OF TRANSCRIPTS: Students should always submit their college applications BEFORE we submit transcripts. This helps the admission office accurately match up the supporting documents to active applications. Students should manage their applications and request transcripts through their Naviance account. PENN STATE APPLICATIONS: The preferred deadline for all Penn State applications is November 30th. Seniors choosing Penn State should get their application in by November 25th to give Guidance time to submit the transcript. Test scores for ACT or SAT need to be mailed to Penn State direct from the testing agency. They will not accept test scores on the transcript. SCHOLARSHIPS: The Guidance Office is posting scholarships within the Naviance platform. Students should be checking the scholarship section under their college tab weekly for updates. CHECK YOUR APPLICATION PORTALS: After a student applies to a college, they should actively read college emails and check the school specific portal to make sure all of their documents are in. It is the student’s responsibility to make sure documents are matched to their account and that they are meeting college deadlines. JANUARY 1st DEADLINES: Students that have a January 1st deadline for college applications need to make sure their applications are in and transcripts requested prior to winter break. The preferred deadline for application submission to meet the January 1st deadline is: December 12th. The Guidance staff will not be in to manage paperwork from December 23rd-January 2nd. FAFSA FORM & PHEAA STATE GRANT: The FAFSA is now available for the 2017/2018 school year. You can send the FAFSA to up to 10 schools on your child’s list. You must also fill out the PHEAA State Grant form to be eligible for PA State money. Here are some helpful websites: www.fafsa.ed.gov and www.pheaa.org PARENT ACCESS TO OUR UPDATES: The Guidance Office posts daily announcements to seniors in our schoology group. You can request access to our schoology group or your child’s Naviance account. Your help in the college process can be very helpful. If you would like access to these groups, please email your child’s school counselor, Emily Crawford: [email protected] OR Kimberly Jensen: [email protected]

Introducing FIRST Team 156 RPM (Robotics Plus Mayhem), a student-driven STEAM program at Fairview High School. As part of this program, the students use STEAM components (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) as tools for building a 120 pound robot to

partake in a enthralling competition. This team is driven by student brainpower, dedication, creativity and determination. Without that, where would we be? There is a place for everyone as all grades and skill levels work alongside and learn from each other. Volunteer mentors from various STEAM fields guide students to achieve the final robot design. This year, the game theme is STEAMWORKS. Are you ready for some Steampunk? The official game will be released on January 7, 2017. Innovation and imagination is extremely prevalent in the 3,400 FIRST Robotics Competition Teams around the globe. There are more than 140 events worldwide that all lead up to the greatest: the 2017 FIRST Championships April 26-29, 2017 in St. Louis, Missouri. If you want to learn real world skills and belong to the “Varsity sport for the mind”, come join us in our pre-season skill building. Email [email protected] and check out our website at www.rpm156.com. Submitted by Julia Law and Kathryn Bacik, student team members

Mindful Movement at FHS: YOGA Earlier this month the Refocus program received a mini-grant from the Fairview School Foundation to purchase thirty yoga mats for use in the district. The Refocus program strives to promote healthy success for all students by teaching the concepts of focus and attention, responsibility and ownership, empowerment and resilience, and kindness and compassion.

Yoga gives students the opportunity to practice these ideas through postures, focusing the mind, and working with the breath. It allows young people to unwind, recharge, and learn new skills.

Students who participate take a proactive role in their own physical and mental wellness. Strength, flexibility, and balance improves and stress management increases as the nervous system calms and thoughts get redirected. A yoga practice is now being offered for FHS students on Mondays after school in the zoo. We are truly grateful to the Fairview Foundation for their support in helping to make this happen!

Women in Engineering Four of Fairview's finest visited Behrend for the WIE conference and workshop. The girls participated in several hands on challenges and listened to a keynote speaker outline her path to a career in an engineering field.Keep your love of science and math, girls!

Science with the 'ChemGoddess'In chemistry the students at some point ask, "Are we going to blow stuff up?" My answer is, "Yes!" And this is the lab in which the students have an up close, hands on experience with a few small explosions. It is memorable.

It's a busy place, but we're safe and having a good learning experience.

Economy & Community Units The AP English Language and Composition students have completed their study of the Economy Unit in which they analyzed the role of work and the economy in our daily lives by reading and discussing articles focused on those concepts. They then analyzed the rhetorical devices present in each article as they continue to hone their own rhetorical voices. The students are currently completing the Community Unit in which they evaluate the individual's role in and responsibility to the community. They completed a Graded Discussion to analyze selected articles, and they are currently writing essays selected from a variety of prompts to express their views on communities.

AP English Language & Composition

"Be the Change" Poems & NightThe Applied English IV students finished their poetry unit by crafting their own insightful poems focused on this year's school district theme of "Be the Change." Upon completion of this unit, the students studied the riveting account of Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel in his book Night. The students created visual representations of the plot, analyzed internal conflicts, and connected historical documents to the text, among other activities. They also engaged in thought-provoking discussions about the atrocities of World War II.

Analyzing & Creating Propaganda

Mrs. Nelson's 9th grade students have been

exploring the historic role of propaganda,

specifically during World War I. Students were

challenged to create a skit, poster, or song that

reveals various aspects of propaganda. These

images represent their examples. Well done

American Studies students!

Freshmen Predict Election Results

Mrs. Nies's freshmen social studies classes took on the roll of predicting the way the 2016 Presidential

election would play out. The students studied past political trends in voting, read articles predicting this year's election results and made educated guesses as to which electoral votes would be awarded to whom

during the election night. The students then compared their predictions to the actual outcome the next day.

The classes enjoyed following the election process and learning about each of the potential candidates over

the past two months.

Fairview Marching Band Takes Awards at L.M.B.A. Championships

The 2016 Fairview Marching Band completed a VERY successful season on Saturday, October 29, 2016 as they competed in the 2016 Lakeshore Marching Band Association’s (L.M.B.A.) Championship Competition at Veteran’s Stadium in Erie. The Band captured their highest score of the season, 88.05, a 2nd Place Finish and the Caption Award for High Music. The band was up against some pretty tough competition, including undefeated Cochrantan High School. Their score of 88.05 was only 1.35 points away from first place finisher Cochrantan. This is a very close margin in marching competition. Fairview’s capture of the caption award for High Music also halted Cochrantan in their 19 year run of sweeping all the caption awards at

Championships. This is an amazing accomplishment for our Marching Tigers!

Fairview Football 2016 Season

In 2016, the Fairview Tiger Football team finished with a record of 4-6 overall and 2-4 in Region 4.

The off-season was marked with change, as the PIAA created a new six classification system. Playing as a 3A team, the composition of Region 4 shifted to larger schools. Additionally, an ambitious independent schedule against two 5A schools and a 4A school made for a very competitive year.

The Tigers were led by Captains: Chris Hudson, Walter Chevalier, Noah Coffman, and Travis Chorney. The seniors included Dominic Colao, Preston Nouri, Adam Majewski, Tommy Grimaldi, Jared Hanas, Thomas Beuge, Anthony Cooper, and Cole Kojancic. These graduating seniors can boast a 17-11 regular season record, a 1-2 playoff record, and claim two Region Championships in 2014 and 2015.

Remarkably, two running backs surpassed the thousand yard rushing milestone: Clayton Halmi with 1275 yards and Jared Hanas with 1063 yards. Andrew Morosky threw for 731 yards and 9 TD’s aided by Thomas Beuge with 14 catches for 407 yards , 5 TD’s and Travis Chorney with 16 catches for 144 yards, 1 TD. Defensively, Jared Hanas led the team in tackles with 75 and three interceptions followed by Dominic Colao with 73 tackles and Jon Hunter with 4 interceptions. A robust Junior Varsity team went 5-2-1 with a many promising freshmen, sophomores, and juniors.

The FHS Cross Country team finished with an impressive showing at the PIAA District X meet with the girl's team finishing 3rd place overall and the boy's team finishing 4th place. The girls were led by Lilly Myers who won the District meet and is the 2016 District X champion! There were three state qualifiers on the FVXC team, Lilly Myers, Jamison Cook, and Jerrod Nelson. The three travelled to Hershey, PA to run in the state meet. Lilly medaled in 6th place and both Jamison and Jerrod were in the top 100 in the state. With both teams being young and dedicated, we are looking forward to the upcoming successful years for FVXC!

FVXC 2016

This year the Lady Tigers volleyball team fought a long and hard season ending with a record of 2-12. The win-loss category can never show the heart and drive the ladies gave on the court each and every day. Not once did they ever give up or want to quit, showing up to practice ready to keep learning and pushing to be their best. Apollos Hester said it best - "Regardless of the scoreboard, you're going to be successful because you put in all the time, all the effort, all the hard work and you know it's going to pay off." Congratulations to our seniors Amy McGee and Halle Zelina who will be successful in their futures because of their hard work and dedication in everything they do.

FHS FALL SPORTSFHS Boys' Soccer

The boys posted a 16-2-1 record at the end of the season that came to an end after a hard-fought loss to Harbor Creek. They ended their season as Region champs, congrats boys!

FHS Girls' Soccer

The Lady Tigers ended their year with an 11-6-1 overall record. Their season came to an end following a 4-0 setback to Mercyhurst Prep. Great season girls!
