Soccer Club Swap Shop Evo-Stik North Programme of the Season, 2016-17

FROM THE EDITOR: WELCOME TO VOLAIR PARK

Good afternoon and welcome to Volair Park for this after-noon’s match in Evo-Stik North.

We are, of course, delighted to have with us the players, officials and supporters of Kendal Town, as well as today’s match officials. We hope you all have a pleasant afternoon with us and a safe journey home.

These notes are being written immediately after the match against Goole; a fixture I missed partly so this programme could be compiled. As ever, I’m lucky to have had some excellent contributions this week. There is a look at what next season’s changes to the National League System might entail and we start the build up to next week’s Liverpool Senior Cup tie with a trip into the archives with Roy McDonald.

Of course, while the Cup is a nice distraction to have, the League is the club’s bread and butter, so it was good to get another win on the board in midweek. The three points gained on Tuesday night are valuable, not least because they came after a series of postponements. Not all of the matches that were due to take place in midweek went ahead and for some of the clubs affected, Thursday night football must surely be on the horizon.

Today represents another difficult challenge. Our visitors this afternoon arrive at Volair Park having experienced a period of indifferent form, but have recently welcomed a number of new players into their squad. The Mintcakes will be looking to move up the table and finish the season strongly, so our players will need to be at their best if they are to pick up the points this afternoon. However, we must go into the match without Joey Faux, whose injury has ruled him out for the remainder of the season. By way of tribute to the popular Antipodean, he appears on today’s cover. All at the club wish him a speedy recovery.

Thanks for your support today. Enjoy the match.

Gareth Coates

he present club was originally formed as Netherfield AFC in 1919 when employ-

ees at K Shoes Netherfield factory were encouraged to form a foot-ball team. They were provided with land near to the factory at Parkside and began to compete in local leagues. In 1925 the team achieved its first notable success winning the Westmorland County Cup. The Golden EraIn 1945 the club joined the semi-

professional ranks becoming a member of the Lancashire Com-bination League and for the first time in its history Netherfield AFC played against Football League opposition that year when nearly 10,000 people watched the two FA Cup ties against local rivals Barrow. Netherfield AFC was soon estab-lished as a major non-league club by taking the Lancashire Combi-nation Championship in 1949 and again qualifying to meet a Foot-ball League side, Gateshead in the

FA Cup. FA Cup success was quickly be-coming a tradition as in the fol-lowing year, 1950, after defeat-ing North Shields at Parkside in the First Round Proper the team traveled to Watford where over 15,000 people watched Nether-field AFC take on Watford in the Second Round. Unfortunately for the traveling fans the home side ran out 6-0 winners. 1952-53 again saw Netherfield in the First Round Proper of the

FA Cup, this time against Gains-borough Trinity where a draw at Parkside was followed with a dis-appointing loss at Gainsborough. The clubs reputation was further enhanced when, in the 1954-55 FA Cup Wrexham were the First Round Proper visitors to Parkside Road and had to settle for a 3-3 draw. By the time Grimsby Town visited in 1956 it had been the fifth time in 8 years that Nether-field AFC had reached the com-petition proper of the FA Cup. Over 5,000 people packed Park-side Road to watch the Third Di-vision leaders beat Netherfield 5-1, a record crowd and more than 500 more than the previ-ous year’s tie against Wrexham. The following year, 1956, Nether-field won the Combination Cup, a trophy they won again five years later in 1961. In 1963 Parkside Road again saw Second Round FA Cup action as Netherfield held Football League side Chesterfield to a draw. The 1963-64 season saw Nether-field finish runners up to Chorley in the Lancashire Combination, striker Tom Brownlee scoring an incredible season total of 76 goals. In January of the follow-ing year Brownlee was sold to Bradford City, however Nether-field still managed to win the the Combination Championship Divi-sion 1 title that year. It was the first time they had won it since 1949 and as a bonus the reserve team won the Division 2 Champi-onship in the same year.

New ChallengesIn 1968 the Club accepted the challenge of becoming a founder member of the Northern Premier League. However, the 1970’s were

not kind to Netherfield as they languished around the bottom of the Northern Premier League for most of the decade. In 1980 Netherfield and Bridling-ton Trinity set a record for cup tie replays that will likely never be broken, when they played each other seven times in the First Round of the FA Trophy. Af-ter a total of thirteen and a half hours matchplay Netherfield won 2-0 to go through to the second round. However the cost to both clubs was dear, a total of £1,800 and it depleted the finances of Netherfield causing the Club to move down into the North West Counties League Division 1 in 1982. In 1987 the Northern Premier League expanded into a new di-vision, League Division 1 which provided a route back for the Club to play at a higher level as they joined the new Division and in 1998 the Club changed its name to Netherfield Kendal. The New MillenniumIn 2000 with the demise of shoe making in the town, and with the Netherfield site now a shopping complex, K Village, the club de-cided to re-brand itself as Kendal Town to reflect it’s relationship with the town. Although in re-cent years times have not been easy for Kendal Town there has been some success on the field, in 2003 they reached the final of the Marsden Cup and over 400 fans travelled to Accrington to watch them lose 2-0 to Confer-ence side Leigh RMI. New state of the art floodlights began a slow process of gradual ground redevelopment in 2004 and 2,500 fans turned up to

watch the lights switched on for a visiting Manchester United XI squad. Tony Hesketh returned to the club for a second spell as Man-ager in 2004-05, steering them to fifth place in the league. In the ensuing play-off final the club travelled to AFC Telford United as underdogs. Although Kendal could not overhaul the favourites they won much respect from the 4,250 Telford fans watching as they narrowly lost 2-1. Later that year the club entered into part-nership with The Westmorland FA and Bolton Wanderers in an effort to improve youth football and coaching. The club achieved Charter Stand-ard status from the FA shortly afterwards and subsequently formed a new youth club in con-junction with local club Watts-field FC and achieved full Charter Standard Community Club status in an effort to improve football for boys and girls in the area. 2005-06 was Kendal’s most suc-cessful season for 40 years as they achieved a promotion for the first time in their history to the Northern Premier League Premier Division. The run-in to the end of the season was a nail-biting one and Kendal missed automatic promotion on the last day of the season by a single goal difference. A packed Parkside Road witnessed a pulsating play-off final won by Kendal Town in the last minute when former Manager Peter Smith popped up to score the winning goal against Gresley Rovers to seal a famous promotion resulting in one of the biggest pitch invasions wit-nessed in Kendal!

A troubled period then followed with an outside Lancashire based business con-sortium trying hard to take over the club.”

The highpoint of the 2006-07 sea-son was off the field, when a long-standing friend of Kendal Town, John Richardson persuaded Pres-ton and England football legend Sir Tom Finney, to come to a home game.

After a fine start to the 2006-07 season in the Unibond League Premier Division, reality kicked in for Kendal Town. After a series of poor results, both in the league and in cup competitions, manager Tony Hesketh resigned and was replaced by club captain Lee Ash-croft. The club hovered around the relegation zone for some time but managed to avoid relegation.

The highpoint of the season was when Preston and England legend Sir Tom Finney OBE was persuaded to become Club President: Sir Tom recounted he had as a teenager been turned down by Netherfield as a player by the club.

The 2007-08 season saw the club finish in mid table. The following two seasons were Town’s best in the Unibond League Premier Divi-sion where they secured two play-off places in a row losing in the semi-finals each time.

Longstanding Chairman David Willan was replaced by Haydon Munslow in 2010. Manager Lee Ashcroft left to join Northwich Vic-toria half way through the 2012-13 season taking many of the players with him. Steve Edmondson took over as Manager but despite win-ning many of the remaining games with a new hastily formed squad was unable to prevent the club be-

ing relegated.

In 2013, the club house which had been in private ownership was taken back by the club and re-named by supporters as Finney’s (after Sir Tom). In the same year Kendal Town Ladies was formed and a local Youth Development Centre established.

The 2013-14 season was one of consolidation in the Evo Stik League First Division North. For-mer club striker David Foster re-placed Steve Edmondson as Man-ager. The season opened with hopes of a play-off place, but after a series of indifferent results Da-vid Foster departed and his assis-tant Michael Stringfellow stepped up as replacement. He was able to produce a number of exciting home wins against highly rated clubs but couldn’t find a consist-ent run of results.

The 2014-15 season started well for Michael Stringfellow with good results. A troubled period then fol-lowed with an outside Lancashire based business consortium trying hard to take over the club. Internal friction amongst the club’s mem-bers was mirrored by increasingly poor results on the pitch. Chair-man Haydon Munslow resigned and was replaced by George Gudg-eon.Michael Stringfellow resigned and was replaced by a new coach-ing team led by Gary Fawcett and returning David Foster. The con-sortium withdrew. Results started to again improve, leading to a mid-table finish, a position they also occupied in 2016-17

rescot Cables returned from a trip to West Yorkshire with a clean sheet and a point which consolidates their place in the end-of-season play-offs.

A dour match got off to a slow start. The main chance of the first half came in the 39th minute. A header in to the box from Baba Conte set Chris Almond up for a volley but unfortunately it fell straight into the Albion goalkeeper’s hands.

A shot from Ossett Albion’s Jack Stockdill came in the 69th minute but it was hit over the bar and out

of play for a goal kick.

A bad challenge on Valter Fernandes in the 73rd minute saw Ossett Albion’s Ross Hardaker dismissed. In the aftermath of the incident, Baba Conte received a yellow for an apparent coming together with Scott Metcalfe.

Struggling Albion defended stoutly during the final stages of the match, ensuring that the game ended goalless.

A first half double from Prescot Cables’ Chris Almond was enough to see off a resilient Ramsbottom United side at Volair Park.

The opening goal came after just three minutes from the penalty spot and Almond doubled

the advantage just short of the half hour, netting with a brilliant header from a pinpoint James Edgar cross.

Lee Gaskell halved the deficit in the 64th min-ute when his free kick took a wicked bounce and deceived home keeper Ben Barnes but the hosts held on for the points.

It’s the biggest shake-up in the Non-League game since 2004… and now the FA has

revealed what it might look like. From 2018-19, an extra division will be added at Steps 3 and 4. The FA’s Leagues Committee has released provisional Step 3 and 4 league boundaries ahead of next season’s National League System restructuring. At their meeting on February 6,

the Committee decided the prin-ciples to be applied when allocat-ing clubs at the two steps. The Committee decision was taken after hearing the results of two exercises, the first using the tables at the end of last season (2016-17) and the second based on the tables as of January 2 2018. It is emphasised by the FA that, for the time being, this is a guide only and they have deliberately not included names of clubs be-cause the full allocation can only

be made when the identities of the constituent clubs are known. It is clarified that this is for sea-son 2018-19 and the make-up of clubs in future seasons may alter this approach. At Step 3, the decision is to im-plement a north division, a cen-tral ‘band’ from the east coast to the west of Birmingham, together with south west and south east divisions, as shown in The NLP’s graphic above.

The Southern League is to admin-ister the pink and yellow areas, the Isthmian League the green area and the Northern Premier League to administer the area coloured black. At Step 4, the seven areas will be divided as shown in The NLP’s graphic below. The Isthmian League has responsibility for the green, blue and orange areas, the Southern League administers the yellow and pink areas and the

Northern Premier League in the area coloured black. The Northern Premier League held a meeting of its clubs ear-lier this week to decide whether to remain with a north/south split or to change to an east/west al-location. That meeting was due to take place on Thursday, after this programme went to press.

The Non-League Paper is available every Sunday and Monday, priced £1.50.

ur fellow North Division club, Clitheroe, have launched a crowdfunding appeal in an effort to replace a stand destroyed in the recent storms.

On Friday morning the club received a phone call that the Shed End had been torn out of the ground by the gale-force winds that were batter-ing the region.

Despite the danger, volunteers attempted to secure it until it was safe for further inspection. However, a large section peeled over the wall into the empty car park behind the ground, thankfully causing minimal damage although the situation could have been a lot worse. With the winds showing no signs of dis-sipating, a handful of volunteers took the decision to dismantle the stand so no further damage was caused to surrounding properties.

Work carried on by floodlight late into Friday night by volunteers who battled through dangerous condi-tions under the unstable structure, until it was safe to leave overnight for work to re-commence in the

morning.

By the next morning the winds had died down, and the cleanup operation resumed with help from the usual volunteers, assisted by groups from Clitheroe Wolves, E&D Plant Hire, and Clitheroe Light Engineering to whom Clitheroe FC are grateful.

The stand was the oldest in the ground having been installed over 45 years ago, and throughout that time continued to be an integral part of Shawbridge, sheltering home regulars and away fan groups alike.

A fundraising page has been set up at justgiving.com/crowdfunding/clitheroefcstand to help meet the cost of replacing the stand with another that the club, fans, and the town’s community can be proud of.

Every penny donated will go directly towards the construction of the new stand and anything that you can donate will be greatly appreciated by the club and it’s volunteers.

ROY McDONALD LOOKS AT THE

EXPLOITS OF PRESCOT FC

rom the very start, the Prescot players were keen to test themselves against the best sides in the area, and in just their second season in existence, the fledgling Prescot club entered a local cup competition.

Prescot’s first cup match, was against the well-estab-lished Aigburth Vale side, in the first round of the 1885-86 Liverpool and District Amateurs Medal Competition. Unfortunately, the Watchmakers went down 2—1 to the strong Vale side. Prescot’s team for the match was;

Prescot: Jos. Scott, C. Wilkinson, J. Case, Jno. Hobbins, J. Welsby, P. Pendleton,R. W. Woods, F. Allen, J.T. Scott, W. Knox, Jno. Allman.

In season 1887-88 season Prescot made better progress in the Liverpool Junior Cup, generating more and more interest in the town as they did so. After a first round win over Southport Wanderers (the cup holders), 4-1, a second round win over Linacre Reserves (5-1), and a third round bye, a good crowd saw the Prescot side demolish Liverpool Regent 8-1, for a place in the semi-finals. The semi-final was played against Garston at the Liverpool Police Athletic Ground, Fairfield and a special train enabled some 300 fans to make the journey. For the previous two weeks, special training sessions had been organised for the Prescot players and “their appearance in the arena deserved the complimentary cheers heart-ily given.” By now Joseph Scott, who had earlier played in goal for Prescot, was firmly established in the forward line and contributed to the score with a fine headed goal in the easy 5-1 victory. So, just four seasons after their formation, Prescot had reached the final of a premier local cup competition, scoring 22 goals and conceding just four in the process.

On Wednesday April 18th 1888, the Liverpool Junior Cup Final was held at the Bootle Cricket Club ground, Hawthorne Road, and an estimated 2,000 spectators attended, including some 400 who had travelled by spe-cial train from Prescot.

The early stages of the game belonged to the Aintree Church side and after five minutes they took the lead when centre forward Curnoch charged both ball and Prescot goal-keeper John Hobbins through the posts. This temporarily put Hobbins out of the game and play was sus-pended until he was able to con-tinue. Curnoch made it 2-0 to Aintree five minutes later and this seemed to spur Prescot into action. However, just as the blue and whites were getting on top, the ball was lost in the crowd, and play was suspended again until it was returned. On the stoke of half time, Tip Stockley did score for Prescot only for the referee to, mysteriously, disallow the effort to the consternation of players and spectators alike. Early in the second half, Aintree scored their third goal and, effectively, killed off any hopes Prescot might have had of lifting the trophy, especially as heavy rain now made conditions difficult. Joe Stott did notch a consolation goal in the final minute for the tired Prescot side, but Aintree Church ran out win-ners by 3 - 1. The teams for the final were;

Prescot: John Hobbins, Gatley Lyon, Joseph Case, Knox (Captain), Tom Seddon, Whitfield, Joe Stott, Jim Welsby, Scott, Charles Wilkinson, Jack ‘Tip’ Stockley.

Aintree Church: Barton, Jones, Taylor, Wright, Nidd, Dodd, Curnoch, Meakin,Shaw, Jones, Orrett

In season 1889-90, Prescot entered both their first team and reserves, better known as the Swifts, into the Liverpool and District Junior Cup. Both teams did exceptionally well,

and when they were kept apart in the semi-final draw, the prospect of an all-Prescot final became very real. The first team’s semi-final tie with Saltney Borderers was a titanic strug-gle, requiring two replays before the Watchmakers emerged victorious. The Cheshire Observer of 19th April 1890 wonderfully reported the first replay:

The proceedings opened rather tamely, but the combatants eventually warmed to their work, and some really clever football was shewn. Saltney passed with neatness, several times nearly effecting the downfall of their oppo-nents’ fortress, but their shooting was inaccurate – probably due to excite-ment – and numerous easy chances were thrown away. The Prescot men were by no means idle and swooped down on the opposing goal, with unmistakeable earnestness, but the backs were not to be caught napping, and sucessfully resisted the onslaughts of the forwards. The special feature in this half was the splendid goalkeeping of the Saltney custodian (Jones), who cleared his charge in first-class style, and earned for himself the warm enco-miums of the spectators. Try as they would neither side were able to regis-ter a single point, and they crossed over with the score sheet blank.Saltney, after the restart, forced the running, and had much the best of the affair, the Prescot goalkeeper experi-encing considerable difficulty in nego-ciating the lightning shots from the Saltney forwards, who were shooting as staight as a die at this period. After about ten minutes had elapsed, the Cheshire contingent found a loop-hole in their adversaries’ defence, and quickly taking advantage of it, scored their first point. Prescot now retailiated, and although corners and free kicks fell to them, they were unable to gain any advantage. Saltney returned to the attack, but the backs this time were on the alert and nothing tangible resulted. Just when victory appeared to be in the grasp of Saltney, one of the Prescot men sent the ball through the uprights,

The first team’s semi-final tie with Saltney Borderers was a titan-ic struggle, requiring two replays before the Watchmakers emerged victorious.”

White Star Wanderers decided that the cup would be theirs by fair means or foul”

a minute before the conclusion of the fray, thus equalising matters. An extra half hour was then decided upon, but at the expiration of that time, neither team were able to gain the mastery, and they will therefore have to meet again.

In the second replay Prescot finally overcame the spirited Borderers by 5 goals to 2.

The other semi-final also went to a replay before the Swifts claimed their place in the all-Prescot final.

May 13th 1890 saw Moss Meadow, the Bible Class ground in Prescot, com-fortably filled with interested sup-porters to witness this unprecedented final clash. Unfortunately, the game itself never lived up to the expecta-tions and the first team gained an easy 7-2 victory, to lift the trophy. In addition to the handsome cup, valued at 25 guineas, each member of the winning team received a medal in the form of a Maltese cross, with a gold centre in the form of a Liver bird. The Swifts received similar medals with silver centres.

After the match, the band of the 2nd Volunteer Battalion led a procession of the players and jubilant support-ers through the town to a celebration at landlord Mark Kellett’s Eagle and Child Hotel on Warrington Road. The cup was exhibited in the window of Mr. J. Young’s shop in the town for a week, before eventually finding a place in a glass cabinet at the Eagle and Child Hotel.

The following season (1890-91) Prescot entered in the Liverpool Senior Cup whilst the reserve team contested the Junior Cup competi-tion. The senior Prescot side surprised even themselves as they won through to the semi-final stage of the com-petition where they faced the mighty Everton at Anfield. Despite an 8-1 defeat, before “a capital attendance of 3,000”, the result was hailed as a moral victory for the Prescotians, for Everton fielded Alex Latta, Alec Brady and Jack Elliot from their Football League Championship winning side,

and the hugely experienced Robert Smalley in goal. The five Everton forwards alone were said to be paid £20 per week, (almost one-fifth of the annual income of the Prescot club). The teams for this match were;

Prescot: Harrison, Lyon, Whitfield, Woodward, Fairish, Alcock, George,Prescott, Lawrenson, Stockley, Scott.

Everton: Smalley, Dobson, Cresswell, Martin, R. Jones, W.H. Jones, Latta, McGregor, McMillan, Brady, Elliot.

Prescot were proving doughty cup fighters as they battled through to another appearance in the semi-final of the 1891-92 Liverpool Senior Cup. This time the strong, but short-lived, Liverpool Caledonians got the bet-ter of Prescot in a 4-1 victory at the Stanley ground.

In 1894-95 Prescot reached the final of the Liverpool and District Shield after a thrilling semi-final victory (2-1) over the previously unbeaten Liverpool South End outfit in a snow affected match at Whiston’s ground. At the time it was rumoured that the South End men were receiving between 10 and 25 shillings per man per week, whereas the Prescot players were wholly amateur and played only for the love of the game.

The final was contested at Goodison Park against White Star Wanderers, who had taken 3 games to over-come Aintree Church in the other semi. Hopes were high as some 800 Prescotians made their way to the ground by special train, but, alas, not even their presence could help the Watchmakers to victory.

In an end to end game, the whites of Prescot scored first through Middlehurst, and they reached the “breathing and refreshment inter-val” ahead by the solitary goal. ln the second half, however, White Star Wanderers decided that the cup would be theirs by fair means or foul, and these tactics seemed to unsettle the Prescot side. Soon after half time, Wanderers had scored twice in quick

succession and when the unlucky ‘keeper, Jenkins, put through his own goal, the faithful realised that this was not to be Prescot’s year. To cap it all, White Star scored two more before the end to retain the trophy for a second year by a 5-1 margin. In presenting the Shield to the win-ning team, Mr. Clayton “condemned in the strongest possible language” the rough play of White Star and intimated that, “if he had been the referee, they would have been one or two short before the finish.”

Prescot: Jenkins, Alcock (capt.), Robinson, Hunter, J. Lyon, Foster, Prescott, Middlehurst, Woodward, Barlow, Crawley.

White Star Wanderers: Sterling, Lambert, Brown, McArdle, McCarthy, May, Platt, Hankin, R. Jones, McCarthy, McCullock.

Many of the players from that Prescot side enjoyed long associations with the Club, notably, Bob Alcock, Bill Robinson, Wick Hunter, Harry Prescott, Bill Middlehurst and Jack Woodward. In the Prescot side that day was one, John Barlow. Barlow was signed by Everton in 1897 and made 4 first team starts. After leaving Merseyside, he ventured south to play for Reading and Tottenham Hotspur, both still non-league sides at the time, before he graduated back into the foot-ball league with Leicester Fosse. He scored 3 goals in 27 appearances for the Fosse in 1903-04.

The highlight of the 1895-96 sea-son was the club’s entry into the Liverpool and District Shield, where after defeating local foes, Whiston on their own ground, (2-0), Saltney Borderers (6-1), and old enemy White Star Wanderers in the semi-final (2-1), they reached the final for the sec-ond consecutive year, where they met

Tranmere Rovers on the Liverpool Police Athletic Ground, Fairfield.

Prescot went 2 goals down but man-aged to come back to draw 2–2 in a relatively dour game. The replay was held on the Garston ground, and this time, Prescot began this game deter-mined to lift the shield. After five minutes they scored through Harry Prescott. The watchmakers dominated the first half and added a second after 30 minutes. But if the first half had belonged to Prescot, then the second was Tranmere’s and when they pulled back a goal from a corner, it seemed only a matter of time before they would score the equaliser. However, against the run of play, H. Roberts scored a third for Prescot just before the end to clinch the victory.

The train carrying home the jubilant supporters was greeted at Prescot station by the explosion of detona-tors placed on the line by the happy stationmaster.

Prescot: R. Roberts, E. Prescott, Alcock (capt), Hunter, Woodward, Foster, H. Prescott, Middlehurst, H. Roberts, Barlow, Crawley.

Tranmere Rovers: J. Broley, A. Gill, W. Price, W. Spencer, J. Douglas, W. Hilton, G. Raby, W. Davies, Drain, J. Spencer, J. McKinley. So, after just missing out the previ-ous year, Prescot captain Bob Alcock could lift the second trophy of their short career.

In 1896-97, defending champions Prescot’s run of strong performances in the Liverpool Shield continued, and it took two replays of the semi-final to finally establish Liverpool Police Athletic as victors by 3 goals to one, at the Engineers ground in Birkenhead.

he ongoing dispute between Dulwich Hamlet and their landlords escalated dramatically this week, with the club being evicted from their ground and given 21 days to pay £121,000 in backdated rent, or face being served with a

winding-up petition.

On Monday evening, the Daily Mirror reported that the own-ers of Dulwich’s Champion Hill Stadium, Meadow Residential had served the club with the demand, which Meadow’s spokesman said was “in line with the licence obligations, which the club have not paid over the course of the last three plus years.

“Meadow own the ground and not the football club. It is entirely up to the Directors of DHFC whether they choose to pay their outstanding arrears.

“Meadow have repeatedly stated that the site is not on the market.”

The ‘licence’ which Hamlet had to use the ground was due to exipre at the end of the season and has itself been the sub-ject of much scrutiny in recent months. Meadow Residential are the UK arm of an American-based hedge fund, whose interest in Champion Hill was (and is) commercial. Meadow’s aim was to build residential property on the stadium site, moving the football club to a council-owned site behind the current ground. However, when Southwark Council rejected

Meadow’s planning application for the development and also terminated the football club’s lease on the land to which they hoped to move, Meadow’s response was decisive and plunged the football club into crisis.

Their first action was to withdraw the financial support that they had been providing to the club, leaving Hamlet with just the gate receipts from their home matches as a source of income. The problem with that was that Meadow, as the stadium operator, was only handing over to the club what was left after Meadow’s costs were deducted. The club was also apparently due to receive profits made by the bar in the stadium on matchdays, but has received no income from this revenue stream; the Mirror reports that the bar is now closed. Then Meadow passed Hamlet a VAT bill which the club stated on social media dated “from the time that Meadow ran the club finances”, following that up with the demand for backdated rent.”

It then emerged that a US-domiciled subsidiary of Meadow had registered a number of trademarks, including ‘Dulwich Hamlet Football Club’, ‘DHFC’ and ‘The Hamlet’ and engaged solicitors to send a ‘cease and desist’ letter to the club, attempting to stop them from using their own name!

Remarkably, despite all of this, Dulwich could yet win promo-tion. The Hamlet currently lead their division and are locked in a battle for the championship with Billericay Town (who

were beaten by Dulwich in midweek) and Margate. Their crowds – which often exceed 1,500 – are remarkable for Step 3 but the club has a wage bill of approximately £30,000 per month, plus the additional liabilities passed to them by the landowner, who paid approximately £5.7million for the site.

Meadow might have come close to doubling their money had they accepted an offer from the Legacy Foundation – which is partially owned by Rio Ferdinand. Legacy offered just under £10million late last year, but Meadow turned them down.

A member of the Football Committee running Dulwich Hamlet, Mishi Morath, stated on the Non-League Matters Forum that: “Firstly the Hadley Property Group, then Meadow Residential, were basically running the Club and all of the facilities on behalf of our owner Nick McCormack. They also have first option of the 98% of shares in Dulwich Hamlet Football Club Limited, which are his. Meadow Residential own Champion Hill Stadium.

“In November 2017, after their plans were pulled they announced that they were no longer prepared to ‘fund’ the Football Club. At the time they said from then on the only money they would hand over to the Football Club committee to pay the players wages and run the Club would be from the gate money and the profit from the bars on a match day.

“The gate money handed over is AFTER match day expenses are taken away: turnstile staff (employed by Meadow) and stewarding (employed by Meadow) and we are not allowed to scrutinise what money is taken on the turnstile...we have to ‘trust’ them! Their repre-sentatives also promised in writing that we would get the share of the bar receipts on a match day, but they reneged on that...hence the current crisis. ”

It would seem that Dulwich Hamlet’s situation is grave; it remains to be seen whether this famous club can survive the tactics employed by their landlord.

Meadow might have come close to doubling their money had they accepted an offer from the Legacy Foundation”

rescot Football Club was formed in 1884 and the first organised game of Associa-tion Football ever played in Prescot took place against the second team of a local

St Helens side, St Thomas. Prescot lost 3-1.After playing friendly games for the first five years, Prescot entered the Liverpool & Dis-trict League in 1889. Prescot’s highest finish-ing position in that league was third in 1891-92, the year in which Prescot entered the FA Cup for the first time. A home game against Crewe Alexandra attracted 3,000 spectators to the club’s ‘Slacky Brow’ ground, where Prescot were beaten 7-1.Prescot joined the Lancashire Alliance in 1895 and were champions in 1899-1900. The club finished bottom the following year but joined the higher standard Lancashire League for 1901-02. A ground dispute re-sulted in Prescot dropping out of the league

in 1902-03 and Prescot FC was dormant un-til 1906 when an athletic and football ground was opened at Hope Street and Prescot Ath-letic FC was formed. Prescot Athletic started in the St Helens & District League and won the championship in the first year, after which they joined the Liverpool League for four seasons. The Liverpool County Combination became the Prescot club’s sixth league, in 1911-12. Leagues were suspended in 1914 for the Great War and the post-war Prescot club dropped ‘Athletic’ from its name and joined the Lancashire Combination Liverpool Sec-tion. In their first season, 1918-19, Prescot finished runners-up to Tranmere Rovers but did not fare too well the following season and the club returned to the more locally-based Liverpool County Combination for the 1920-21 season and spent a further seven years in that league. In 1928, the local expanding cable giants,

BICC, donated a magnificent 1,000-seater stand (which was destroyed by fire in 1960) to the club. In what was clearly an early form of commercial sponsorship, the club’s name was changed to Prescot Cables and the team colours became black and amber to commemorate a bit of local industrial history, as the first successful insulated cable drawn at Prescot was covered with black and am-ber paper. Prescot Cables joined the Lanca-shire Combination In 1928-29 and, in 1929, applied to join the Football League Third Di-vision (North), along with four other hopefuls. All the applicants failed, although one, Mans-field Town, was successful two years later.Prescot Cables changed its name to Prescot Town in 1964 but the club struggled and in 1975, it was voted out of the Lancashire Combination. Prescot Town joined the Mid-Cheshire League and won it at the first at-tempt. In 1978-79 they returned to the Cheshire County League, in Division Two,

after an absence of 42 years. Prescot were Division Two champions the following sea-son, with Accrington Stanley as runners-up.In 1980, the name of Prescot Cables was re-taken and in 1982, Cables became a mem-ber of the newly formed North West Counties League where they remained for 20 years. Prescot finished in the top 10 in NWCL Di-vision One in all but one season from 1990 and, in 2001-02, the club had its most suc-cessful season for over two decades, winning the Worthington Challenge Trophy (League Cup) and finishing as Division One runners-up, narrowly missing out on promotion to the Northern Premier League Division One. However, Prescot went one better in 2002-03 and finished as champions of the North West Counties League Division One to win promo-tion to the Northern Premier League Division One. Ground improvements were carried out at Valerie Park (formerly known as Hope Street) to meet the relevant regulations and ensure that Prescot could take their place in the higher league. For the season 2004-05, Prescot found themselves playing at the highest level in their history. Due to a suitable finishing po-sition, and a re-organisation of the National League System, Prescot took their place in the Northern Premier League Premier Divi-sion. As a result of a club being unable to fulfil their fixtures, and after the controversial intervention of the FA, Cables were elevated to fifth position in the final League Table. Ca-bles had the opportunity to gain promotion to what is now called National League North, al-though defeat at Workington in the first play-off game ended that dream - for now! The 2005-06 season was one of consoli-dation with a new football committee being formed from the Supporters Club. The as-sets and liabilities of the old club, Prescot Cables, were transferred over to a new legal entity, namely Prescot Football Club Limited, which continued trading as Prescot Cables Football Club. The new company would sub-sequently be reconstituted as a Community Interest Company owned by more than 300 supporters who each pay a small annual subscription in return for one share. On the pitch, the club produced another mid-table finish in the following season to avoid becoming involved in another non-league ‘shake-up’ that saw two regionalised First Divisions being created within the Northern Premier League ahead of the 2007-08 sea-son. That campaign was a more difficult one and during the club’s final match, Prescot was 15 minutes from relegation. Two late goals secured a win at Lincoln United and survival. Due to how closely contested the division had been, Cables eventually finished in 13th place! Shortly after the season’s end, the ground was purchased by Triman Devel-opments Ltd from a company controlled by a former Chairman of Prescot Cables AFC. The current football club are working on ground improvements in order to provide the team and supporters with an opportunity to move forward.A lacklustre 2008-09 season saw Prescot propping up the Premier Division. Manager Andy Gray departed for Burscough. He was

replaced by Joe Gibiliru who managed to bring some much needed stability to the club as the team finished in mid-table in 2009-10. However, a significant change in personnel meant that Cables initially struggled during the following season. This led to Gibiliru be-ing relieved of his duties around the time of the ‘big freeze’ in December 2010 and as-sistant Dave Ridler took over. He managed to secure Cables’ Northern Premier League status for another season.

The 2011-12 season was a tale of five man-agers. Dave Ridler (who left for Australia in January 2012), Karl Bell and Karl Connolly all took charge for at least one match. Fol-lowing the controversial departure of Shaun Reid to Warrington Town in March 2012, Joe Gibiliru took over for the remaining games. The team and club regrouped after the Reid fiasco to finish the season strongly, defying the odds to remain part of the Northern Pre-mier League.David Powell was the new man in charge for the 2012-13 season and assembled a virtu-ally brand-new squad, which led to inconsist-ency during the early months of the cam-paign. The season was also disrupted by the condition of the playing surface and weather conditions forcing many postponements. When matches finally began in earnest in the New Year, Cables produced one of their most successful periods since the 2002-03 North West Counties League Championship season. A scheme asking donors to sponsor a ‘pitch square’ in order to fund much-needed renovations for the pitch took on a life of its own. In the end the scheme became over-subscribed and has become an annual event which continues to generate vital funds.Circumstances arose that led to David Pow-ell leaving the club ahead of the 2014-15 season. His replacement was Neil Prince, who aged 31 on his appointment, must be the youngest manager in Cables’ history and probably in the League at that time. With limited resources, the team managed to re-tain their membership of the Northern Pre-mier League. The 2015-16 campaign began disastrously, whicht led to Neil Prince being relieved of his duties. In came Andy Paxton, and with the same playing staff, managed to haul the team out of danger and finish the league season in their highest position for some time. Cables also reached the Final of the Liverpool Senior Cup. With the club attracting new and increased sponsorship, including an arrangement which saw Ca-bles’ home ground renamed Volair Park, the club approached 2016-17 in more confident fashion. However, due to work commitments Andy Paxton had to step down from the role of First Team Manager. The club moved swiftly to appoint Brian Richardson. Andy remained in close contact with the club and at the AGM was appointed to the Board of Directors. Initially, the First Team struggled following the change of Manager, but an excellent second half of the season saw the club ease away from the relegation places and win the Liverpool Senior Cup for the first time, defeating Southport in the Final in front of more than 900 spectators.

In what was clearly an early form of com-mercial sponsorship, the club’s name was changed to Prescot Cables in 1928.”

Soccer Club Swap Shop Evo-Stik North Programme of the Season, 2016-17

FROM THE EDITOR: WELCOME TO VOLAIR PARK

Good evening Ladies and Gentlemen and welcome to Volair Park for today’s Evo-Stik North fixture. It is our pleasure to welcome the players, officials and supporters of Kendal Town FC and we also offer warm greetings to tonight’s match officials.

With the weather continuing to wreak havoc upon the fix-ture list, we make no apology for reissuing the programme prepared for the originally scheduled date for this match. I hope that this insert helps to ensure that the publication remains good value for money.

The Mintcakes will travel south in excellent heart follow-ing their victory over Bamber Bridge on Saturday. Kendal are clearly looking to end the season strongly, presumably with one eye on building a squad to challenge for honours next term. With this in mind, Brian Richardson will have prepared his players as meticulously as usual and have drilled into the squad just how difficult the match is going to be.

Of course, the players have proved on multiple occasions that, on their day, they are more than a match for any side. The atmosphere here at Volair Park often helps to unsettle visiting sides and while there might be slightly fewer supporters on the terraces tonight, those who are in the ground will be sure to make themselves heard!

We are starting a run of three home matches in the space of a week, so your attendance and backing for the team is appreciated. Now, more than ever, we thank all who attend our matches and hope you enjoy the game.

n entertaining match eventually went to the home side, but not before Prescot had pushed South Shields all the way.

The game got off to a strong start for Cables as Michael Monaghan opened the

scoring in the first minute.

Lee Mason found the net for South Shields in the 18th minute but his effort was disallowed for off-side. However, Mason found the net in the 41st minute, scoring at the end of a goalmouth scramble to make it 1-1.

Ten minutes into the second half, Michael Monaghan again gave Prescot the lead. His second goal was

very similar to the first, the lively frontman cutting inside to find the net.

Dillon Morse made the score 2-2 from a left wing cross in the 64th minute, before cool composure in the box saw Lee Mason score his second and make it 3-2.

Robert Briggs then drove the ball in from the edge of the box on 86 minutes to help Shields extend their lead to 4-2.

The final goal for Shields came in added time. Jon Morse reacted quickest to the ball coming back off the crossbar, heading it home to make the final score 5-2 to South Shields.

LIVERPOOL SENIOR CUP UPDATE

The Liverpool County FA has brought forward our semi-final tie against Litherland REMYCA by a week, meaning that it will now be played on Thursday 19th April. Although this is ostensibly an ‘away’ tie, it will be played here at Volair Park as REMYCA cannot use Litherland Sports Park on that date.

The winners will then face Marine the following Thursday in the Final, which will be hosted by the Mariners at their ground in Crosby.

ollowing the comprehensive reverse at South Shields on Easter Saturday, Cables once more fell to a heavy defeat, 3-0 at Colwyn Bay, in a fixture which was rearranged at short notice following its postponement on Easter Monday due to

a waterlogged pitch.

Chris Almond returned to the starting line up to part-ner Lloyd Dean in attack with Michael Monaghan left at home nursing a minor knee problem. The game came a little too early for the return of Josh Klein-Davies who hopes to resume action soon.

It was Cables who started the game on the front foot and could have been ahead before Astley Mulholland opened the scoring for the hosts in the 33rd minute.

Chris Almond had tested Bay keeper Matt Cooper early on and the visitors looked to be denied a good shout for a penalty as James Edgar appeared to be felled in the penalty area.

The goal itself arrived as Ben Barnes was closed down quickly after receiving a backpass and Mulholland was able to steal the ball away from the keeper and roll it into an empty net.

Colwyn Bay began to take control of the game at this point and deservedly doubled their advantage on the stroke of half time when a left wing free kick was whipped into the near post area and flicked home off the head of Danny Bartle. Bartle, like Marcus

Burgess of Cables, is celebrating a call up to the England Universities Squad for their three forthcom-ing matches.

The game was effectively finished as a contest just two minutes into the second half when Bartle scored his second. Once more Cables had started on the front foot with Almond causing problems in the Bay defence. The goal was as a result of a quick counter attack, Jordan Southworth seeing a goalbound effort blocked and Bay breaking quickly to put Bartle one-on-one with Barnes, the forward knocking the ball past the advancing keeper and finishing into the empty net. Replays of the goal from the foot-age taken inside the ground seemed to confirm the belief on the visitors bench that Bartle was offside but the flag stayed down and the goal stood.

The two defences were on top for the remainder of the half with both sides largely restricted to efforts from range. Each keeper was well tested once and an excellent block from Louis Coyne kept the score line somewhat respectable as the clock ticked on. There was a cameo appearance from the bench for Morgan Homson-Smith in attack and he showed up well.

As the game entered stoppage time Cables were presented with an excellent opportunity for a con-solation. Reece McNally was felled in the area and a penalty awarded. However, by diving away to his right home ‘keeper Cooper pushed away Dean’s pen-alty to complete a miserable night for the visiting side.
