When I moved into the world of assisted living, I was surprised to find so many residents who were deeply depressed about terrorism and the world situation. Many seniors said that the world was coming to an end; that we had never experienced such madness. I was dumbfounded by what I heard. Why? My father was born in 1906. Like many of you, he was part of the ‘Greatest Generation’. What sorts of sadness and tragedies have most of you survived? Let’s see: WWI (began in August of 1914; over 16,000,000 died). Then in October of 1929, the stock market crashed and thus began the Great Depression. That was followed by WWII, which started on Sept. 1, 1939. The Holocaust and collective loss of life exceeded 50,000,000 people! So in 2001, I was surprised to hear so many residents who said that 9/11 was the beginning of the end. This sort of evil has been part of mankind since day one! Dwell on it and it leads to depression. Put it into its proper perspective (as you did with WWI, WWII, the Depression, etc.) and life goes on positively! My daughter was born in 1974. She had been left on the doorstep of a police station in the center of Korea. We adopted her at approximately 4 months of age. To this day, she has no knowledge of anything related to her Korean birth parents (no awareness of siblings, parents, grandparents, genetic history or heritage). Doing that to a baby could get anyone depressed but she’s one of the most positive people I know. As a little girl, Catherine’s favorite musical was ‘Annie’ and her favorite song was ‘Tomorrow’: “The sun’ll come out tomorrow, Bet your bottom dollar that tomorrow there’ll be sun! Just thinkin’ about tomorrow, Clears away the cobwebs, And the sorrow, ‘til there’s none! When I’m stuck in a day that’s gray, and lonely, I just stick out my chin and grin, and say, The sun’ll come out tomorrow, So ya gotta hang on ‘til tomorrow Come what may!” In the midst of chaos, don’t you agree that’s a pretty good outlook on life?!

Flu SeasonIt’s that time of year again, flu

season is around the corner. Thetiming of flu is very unpredictableand can vary from season toseason. Most seasonal flu activitytypically occurs between Octoberand May. In the United States, theflu most commonly peaksbetween December and January. The CDC recommends a yearly fluvaccine for everyone 6 months ofage or older as the first and most

important step in protectingagainst this serious disease. Peopleshould begin getting vaccinatedideally by October, to ensure thatas many people as possible areprotected before flu season begins. It takes about two weeks aftervaccination for antibodies todevelop in the body and provideprotection against the flu. Inaddition to getting the vaccine, you can take everyday preventativeactions like staying away from sickpeople and washing your hands toreduce the spread of germs. If youare sick with the flu, please stayhome to prevent spreading the fluto others.

If you do get sick with the flu, antiviral drugs which areprescription drugs can be used totreat flu illness. Treatment withantivirals works best when begunwithin 48 hours of getting sick, but can still be beneficial whengiven later in the course of illness.
