In the past few months, our Belmont family has lost a number of wonderful residents. These residents have been what I think of as ‘two-way miracles.’ Families have told us that the compassionate care provided by our loving staff has been ‘miraculous’ and by touching our staff and other residents, these residents have been ‘miracles-in-our-midst.’ We love getting emails and notes about miracle moments that our staff enable. Here’s a sampling from a few notes recently received: A PAL compliment was written by the shaking hand of a 94-year-young resident (writing it was a labor of love): “Does good work. Is always Prompt. Is Trustworthy. Is Dependable. Should be Promoted. Is very kind.” Another from the daughter of a new resident: “Just wanted to drop you a note telling you how happy my mom is! She can be your poster child.” And another: “You guys are amazing how you handle this and communicate everything so quickly, professionally and with a loving message...” Another about a PAL: “I absolutely LOVE being around her and can see what joy she brings to my parents’ day. I can’t describe her enthusiasm, but it is highly contagious..... she apparently gets my dad to dance on a regular basis and I myself found myself dancing too!! She truly makes my heart sing.” If one were to ask for a mission statement, can you think of a better one than making hearts sing’ :) ?! I’m reminded of the salient and prescient words of an old Jimmy Buffet song, ‘Growing Older But Not Up’: “Let the winds of change blow over my head, I’d rather die while I’m living, than live while I’m dead!” Good stuff! Making hearts sing and enjoying miracles in our midst while we live...that’s what it’s all about! It’s hard to believe that we’re already into June. If there’s anything we can do to assist, don’t hesitate to let us know. Here’s to Singing Hearts!

Marjorie Reese shared this story andhad us laughing all day!........

"The Pillsbury Doughboy diedyesterday of a yeast infection andtrauma complications from repeatedpokes in the belly. He was 71.

Doughboy was buried in a lightlygreased coffin. Dozens of celebritiesturned out to pay their respects, including Mrs. Butterworth, HungryJack, the California Raisins, BettyCrocker, the Hostess Twinkies, andCaptain Crunch. The grave site waspiled high with flours.

Aunt Jemima delivered the eulogyand lovingly described Doughboy as aman who never knew how much hewas kneaded.

Born and bread in Minnesota,Doughboy rose quickly in showbusiness, but his later life was filledwith turnovers. He was notconsidered a very smart cookie, wasting much of his dough onhalf-baked schemes. Despite being a

little flaky at times, he still was acrusty old man and was considered apositive roll model for millions.

Doughboy is survived by his wifePlay Dough, and three children: JohnDough, Jane Dough and DoseyDough, plus they had one in theoven. He is also survived by hiselderly father, Pop Tart.

The funeral was held at 3:50 forabout 20 minutes."

TO DRINK PLENTY OF WATER THISSUMMER

Tips for StayingHydrated

• Keep a bottle of water withyou during the day.

• If you don’t like the taste ofplain water, try adding aslice of lemon.

• When you’re feelinghungry, drink water.

Record-Setting HighThe summer heat may have you sweating it out, but compare it to this

scorcher: The mercury hit 134 degrees Fahrenheit in July 1913 at FurnaceCreek Ranch in California’s Death Valley, setting the record for highesttemperature ever recorded.

Know the SignsHeat stroke is a major summertime threat. Watch your friends and lovedones for signs of the condition, such as confusion, dry skin, headache, nausea and rapid pulse. If you suspect heat stroke, get the person to a

cool area and seek medical help immediately.

June Is NationalSafety Month

June is National Safety MonthAdults 55 and older are more

prone to becoming victims offalls, and the resulting injuries candiminish the ability to lead active, independent lives. The number offall deaths among those 65 andolder is four times the number offall deaths among all otherage groups.

We can all encourage residentsto participate in daily exerciseclasses. Staying active has beenshown to reduce fall risks in olderadults. Belmont Village and RehabCare offer various exercise andwellness programs to suiteveryone’s fitness level.

Check apartments daily for anytripping hazards. Phone lines andoxygen tubing should never be

obstructing a walkway. Please alertthe wellness center if you aretaking any new medications, asmany side effects could triggera fall.

Residents should always usetheir walking aide, even insidetheir apartments. Check to makesure your walker is by yourbedside at night. Walkers andcanes should be checked for anyloose or malfunctioning parts.

‘Report any safety concerns tothe concierge in the community.’

Spills should be reportedimmediately and attended toswiftly to prevent any slips on wetsurfaces. Always use wet floorsigns when necessary.

Most importantly try to exercisegood judgment and never attemptan obstacle or task that you feelmight not be safe handled alone.Don’t hesitate to ask forassistance; prevention is key forstaying healthy.
