Make your next skidder YOUR skidder, handpicked from the
widest range of models and options in the industry. You’ll find the
size and power your job needs, with the high-torque diesel engines,
the choice of transmissions, axles, grapples, winches, cab comforts
and a host of other options that let you virtually customize the
ideal skidder to work in your kind of wood and terrain – and to
get you the biggest production numbers.
Innovative electronically-controlled John Deere engines deliver the
high torque-on-demand and powerful rim pull to keep your landing
busy with quick skidder turnaround and fast cycles. On firm ground, the
direct-drive powershift transmission, tight turn radius, and push-button
differential locks can’t be beat. In soft going or on severe ground, the
optional torque converter powershift on the 460D keeps you moving.
For bigger loads over longer hauls, the variable torque curves of the
560D engine put out more torque in each gear selection. Single arch
grapple, dual arch grapple or cable skidders – all have the power and
reliability to drive your business.

The 360D and 460D feature 6.8 L
John Deere turbocharged engines. They
have the steep torque rise to lift heavy
loads, get them started quickly, and keep
you moving over rough ground. What’s
new is the electronically controlled,
common rail fuel injection system that
controls the big power bulge programmed
into the torque curve. Power is automati-
cally increased as a load tries to pull
down the engine, resulting in the most
efficient use of power at every stage of
each cycle. These reliable engines have
heavy-duty engine blocks, high capacity
oil and water pumps, and hardened,
replaceable wet cylinder liners.
The 560D is powered by a John Deere
8.1 L turbocharged diesel. It delivers a
steep torque rise for easier load-starting,
better low-speed driveability, superior
lugging power, and best-in-class fuel
economy. It can maintain high torque
Bigger power bulge
Variable output, higher torque
It all begins with the engine, the heart of the skidder. Thenext generation John Deerediesel engines use a trulyadvanced, electronically controlled fuel injection systemto run cleaner and produce the torque you need, when you need it. All average lowrpms, so they run within theircapacities, saving fuel and engine wear.

as low as 1,200 rpm. Variable power
settings are programmed for different
gears. In 1st and 2nd gears, the base
fuel curve is utilized. In 3rd gear, the
fuel pump adjusts to increase power,
allowing the skidder to pull bigger
loads, or the same load faster than
previous models.
Direct drive or torque converter
powershift – choose the one that’s right
for your job. On mostly firm ground and
for short-to-medium skidding distances,
the standard direct drive powershift
transmission puts the most power to the
wheels, and makes the most of every
drop of fuel. The close-ratio gear
selection through eight forward and
seven reverse gears lets the operator
choose exactly the right gear
to maintain the best speed
for load size and ground
conditions.
You pull bigger loads, faster.
For really soft going, steep slopes or severe
ground, the smooth, steady traction of
the torque converter powershift can make
all the difference. Optional on all 460D
skidders, the torque converter lets you
pull a full load over spongy ground or
rough, hilly terrain without wheel spin
or fast shifting. You get smoother accelera-
tion and faster cycle time with less ground
disturbance. It’s easy on the operator, too,
with less shifting and an electronic bump
shifter that remembers the last gear
selected, a time-saver for quick forward
and reverse shifting. The single lever
pilot-operated grapple control is a
popular option.

Attention to detail makes the driveline
the most reliable yet. The transmission
has a greasable output seal. Internal oil
flow for the bearing to the front housing
gives a more consistent flow, and elimi-
nates external lines to avoid damage.
Heavier components and new seals
all contribute to driveline strength
and durability.
The cab can be released and hydraulically
tilted in a few minutes for access to the
transmission and other driveline compo-
nents. Routine servicing is well planned
throughout, including quick-release fuel
filters and separators, spin-on oil filters,
and oil drain shut-off for spill-free oil
changes.
Four axle choices, all with hydraulic lock
differentials and axle brakes, let you

match tires and ground conditions:
standard, heavy duty, extreme-duty and
the super-wide, extreme-duty (SWEDA)
for the biggest flotation tires or duals.
The 100-inch (254 cm) SWEDA has a
massive housing, large axle and flange,
plus its own dipstick for fast oil check.
Wheel end face seals proven on this
axle are now standard on all 1400
series axles.
Mounted inboard on both axles, the
hydraulic wet-disc brakes are completely
sealed and immersed in an oil cooling
bath. They are self-equalizing and
self-adjusting for wear, so you don’t
have to service them periodically. The
spring-applied, hydraulically released
park brake can be manually applied. It
automatically engages when the engine
is shut down with the ignition key.

The quiet, isolation-mount cabin has a
tinted front windshield and a sun visor,
and heavy screens secure the sides and
back. Inside, there’s everything you need
to take the hard work out of skidding.
The seat is fully adjustable for individual
height and weight. The steering wheel
with spinner knob is adjustable, too.
Tilt up or down and move in or out so
it’s right for you. An electronic hand
throttle option with three pre-set speeds
lets the operator free up his throttle
pedal foot. There’s plenty of legroom
and a wide accelerator pedal. Mounted
on the armrest, the direct drive gearshift
lever has a pushbutton to lock and
unlock the differential lockups. And
you’ll find all the small extras that make
a difference – a dome light, storage
under the armrest for cassette tapes with
cell phone hookup, a beverage holder,
door bins, and a hook for your jacket.
Doesn’t miss a thing
Whether you choose the standard cab with front wind-shield and screened openings, or go all out with the optionalfull window enclosure and air conditioning, this cab is a functional workplace that lets you choose your own comfortposition. Both the seat and the steering wheel are fullyadjustable to suit each operator. The seat swivels so you don’tneed to strain. And the soft-touch levers are positioned to give easy control with theleast amount of effort.

The optional fully enclosed cab has
polycarbonate windows on all openings
with screens on the door windows only.
This well-sealed cab keeps dust out
and helps the air conditioning, venting,
and heating systems operate at peak
efficiency. The optional AM/FM stereo,
located in the contoured headliner with
remote speakers, has a CD or cassette
player option.
Mechanical suspension, air suspension,
vinyl, cloth – take your pick. All seats
are adjustable in height, in forward / back
position, in backrest angle, and in
armrest height. The seat swivels from
15 degrees to 22.5 degrees to 30 degrees –
less neck or back strain when looking
to the rear.
A quick glance tells you engine
temperature, transmission oil tempera-
ture, and fuel level. The select button
to the left calls up digital readouts for
hour meter, gear selection, battery
voltage, engine rpm, and hydraulic oil
temperature, along with fault codes
for the engine and transmission. The
warning indicators across the bottom
are accompanied by audible alarm
beeps, either critical for immediate
shut-down or cautionary to warn
of less critical malfunction.

Each has its place. The single arch simply
lowers and raises the grapple head. It
works best where it can pick up tightly
bunched piles in a single pass. The dual
arch reaches back as well as up and down.
It saves time moving the skidder when
loads are scattered or upslope. It can also
pull the load in over the rear for the best
weight distribution and heavy load
control over longer hauls.
Timberjack grapples pick up a load first
try without fishing around. Each tong has
its own cylinder so the tongs adjust to
the load. A high torque motor drives the
grapple through 360-degree continuous
rotation. Closed-center, load-sensing
hydraulics maintain constant pressure on
the tongs from start to finish. Tongs are
box construction with three internal ribs
on each, stronger with less weight. Tong
tips are wear-resistant cast steel. And the
hose routing avoids abrasion. You won’t
find better grapples anywhere.
Single arch or dual
Quickest, tightest grapples
Grapple or cable skidding, you
can count on Timberjack for
the fastest load gathering and
the most secure hold on stems
from the stump to the landing.
You get big loads, too, with
the right front-to-back weight
distribution to keep traction
on the front tires, plus fast
maneuvering with 90-degree
stop-to-stop articulation and
differential locks front and
rear.

Designed specifically to make first
thinnings more profitable, this optional
460D Single Arch Grapple Skidder can
pull larger loads each turn to produce a
sizeable increase in the amount of wood
to the landing every shift. It has a large
123-in (312 cm) grapple and an
extended 145-in (368 cm) wheelbase.
The longer wheelbase gives the balance
and stability to handle larger loads, and
improves traction when reversing uphill
or backing up to a gate delimber.
You can see at a glance that the rear
assembly on the cable skidders is exactly
what you need to withstand the heavy
buffeting they endure. The big, adjustable
fairlead, heavy butt pan, see-through
ramguard screen, and strong fenders
protect the tires, rear frame and winch –
and the operator. The fenders do even
more. They are shaped to guide butts
into the best position for load control
during skidding.
The Timberjack 4000 winch, standard
on the cable skidders, has earned its
reputation as the most reliable winch
you can put on a skidder. It’s fast, too,
with a bare drum linepull up to 212 kN
(47,697 lbf). Operated by a single lever,
it’s a sealed unit with wet-disc clutch
and brake, and pressurized lubrication.
A bigger, more powerful winch is optional
on the 460D and 560D. The 6000 has a
bare drum linepull of 225 kN (50,517 lbf)
and larger drum capacity.
The standard decking blade has a replace-
able, weld-on cutting edge of high carbon
material for longer life. The approach
angle makes short work of decking logs
and road maintenance. A heavy-duty
blade, optional on the 460D and 560D,
is wider at 9-ft 8-in (2,95 m)
and has a heavier weld-on
cutting edge. The wider
blade gives more tire
protection, and the added
weight on the front end improves weight
distribution with heavy loads.

Timberjack’s fix-before-fail strategy on
machine maintenance helps control costs,
increase profits, and reduce stress. Included
in this comprehensive lineup of on–going
programs and services are:
Extended Coverage gives you a fixed cost
for maintaining a machine for a given period
of time so you can effectively manage costs.
Whether you work in a severe-service setting
or just want to spread the risk of doing business,
this is a great way to custom-fit coverage for
your operation.
Planned Maintenance agreements give you
a fixed cost for maintaining a machine for
a given period of time. They also help you
avoid downtime by ensuring that critical
maintenance work gets done right and on
schedule. On-site preventive maintenance
service performed where and when you need
it helps protect you from the expense of
catastrophic failures and lets you avoid
waste-disposal hassles.
Fluid Analysis tells you what’s going on
inside all of your machine’s major components
so you’ll know if there’s a problem before you
see a decline in performance. Fluid analysis is
included in most Extended Coverage warranty
and preventive-maintenance agreements.
Finance Programs offer a full menu of
customized business solutions to meet all
your cash flow needs, including a revolving
charge account that’s ideal for handling your
month-in and month-out expenses. Skip
payments are available to accommodate
seasonal cash flows.
Component life-cycle gives you vital
information on the projected life span of
components and lets you make informed
decisions on machine maintenance by
telling you approximately how many
hours of use you can expect from an
engine, transmission, or hydraulic pump.
This information can be used to preempt
catastrophic downtime by servicing major
components at about 80 percent of their
life cycle.
Certified Customer Support Advisors
and Service Technicians are certified to
have the knowledge and skills to help
make important decisions on machine
maintenance and repair. They will help
you customize a plan that meets your
specific needs.
The manufacturer reserves the right to make changes or add improvements at any time without incurring any obligation tomake such changes on machines manufactured previously.E. & O.E. 10M
