PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Kidsmatter Day 2017! What a brilliant annual event for our school. Any purposeful school focus on good health and wellbeing is worthwhile. The day always reminds us of how important it to have strong and resilient children. This can only happen when students are provided with the skills and knowledge required to put these habits and behaviours into practice. There were so many highlights on the day. My favourite was watching Year 6 student Daniel Shanahan belting out ‘Life is a Highway’ in the caf with all present clapping along. It must be the Irish blood in me, it was fantastic! A big thank you to all of the volunteers that helped out on the day. I am pleased to announce that we now have a new School Wellbeing staff member working at our school every Tuesday for the remainder of 2017. Mark Chapman will replace Bec Horgan in this role. Mark comes to our school with a wealth of experience and very strong background in student wellbeing. Mark’s most recent role was the Principal of Port Fairy P.S. Parents and students can make an appointment/referral to Mark through their classroom teacher, Year level co-ordinator or through a member of the Principal class. Interim Reports: All Year 7-12 Interim reports will distributed to students next week. This is a timely report that provides parents and students with an update on their progress for Term 3. Year 11 students, Campbell McKenzie and Lachlan Rundle, recently attended Victoria Government House. The boys joined other National Youth Science Forum delegates with a meeting with the Governor of Victoria – putting Timboon on the map. When Cam and Lachie were introduced, the Governor replied with - ‘You must have awesome science teachers to get two students through and from the home of delicious Cheeses’.

Congratulations to all students on their recent

achievements with their respective football, netball and soccer

clubs!

Year 5/6 Flood Disaster Maths

Page 3: Timboon P-12 Newsletter...I am pleased to announce that we now have a new School Wellbeing staff member working at our school every Tuesday for the remainder of 2017. Mark Chapman

Chris McKenzie presented the "I've got a problem" Disaster/ Flood Maths unit of work to all Year 5/6 students. Students analysed a number of graphs and discussed our area’s rainfall patterns compared with that of other areas in Australia. They then looked at the costs associated with flood damage and produced a budget on replacing two fences on Chris’ farm, totalling $2640. Earn and Learn I believe an outstanding amount of money was recently paid in the Year 4 auction for a block of chocolate, $525. Where was my piece Ryan and Harvey? The ‘91 Storey Treehouse’ sold for $280 to Charlie, a very expensive fidget spinner went to Seamus for $430 and the best buy went to Heidi and Molly – a $330 set of Gel pens. There will be more auctions to come, so students are reminded to save up. Hats Fabulous to see so many students have remembered to wear their hats outside. From September through to the end of May, the UV radiation levels in our area are expected to average greater than 3, which is when we should ALL be applying sun protection to prevent skin cancer and sun damage.

Year 2 Science As part of the Chemistry unit for Year 2, the students made Whizz Fizz. Check out the before and after photos of students doing the taste testing. The ingredients were bi-carb soda, icing sugar, citric-acid and jelly crystals. I love their personally designed packages too.

Staffing Mrs Berry will be away for the remainder of the term, as she has had her wisdom teeth removed. Lisa Barry will be taking her Year 4 class for the two week, plus the first two of Term 4 to fill-in behind Long Service Leave. Mrs Hawkins is taking Long Service Leave for Term 4 and after completing the application process, Jan Green was appointed as her replacement. Jan comes with a lot of relief teaching experience and has had Pam’s grade a number of times. With Andrea Taylor being appointed as the Principal of Simpson Primary School, the AP position I’m currently filling has been advertised and it is hoped that a provisional appointment will be made by the end of the term.
