PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

I wanted to start this newsletter by recognising Ms Andrea Vallance. I know there will be many parents who know Andrea but for those who don’t know Andrea is the person responsible for all of the wonderful TAP activities that exist at the school. It is her drive and passion for the TAP program that ensure that all of our students have some amazing real life experiences. Every student is exposed to this program in some way. Just last week our Year 10 students visited the Hibberd’s farm to see firsthand the importance of genetics in the agricultural industry. The students had a presentation from Peter Younis from The Vet Group. Then Chris and Lee Hibberd talked to the students about the complexities of farming. It was a great day. All of these activities are a result of Andrea and on behalf of the school community we thank her for her dedication and time. Congratulations to Aimee Hose as one of 26 students across the country to attend the National Olympic Change Maker Summit in December. Aimee went through an extremely extensive selection process with thousands of students from across the country applying. Her leadership and commitment to the community was a key reason for her selection. Well done Amy. In 2020 the Department has brought in a specific policy regarding mobile phones. From Day 1 students are not permitted unless approval is given by the Principal, to have their mobile phone in class or in the yard during the day. All mobile phones must be kept in their lockers during the day. This week we had a very successful Remembrance Day assembly conducted by some of our student leaders. It was great to see the students so respectful of those who have sacrificed so much for us. The Year 5 /6 students headed off this week for their camp to Cape Bridgewater – the highlights being the sand dune surfing and Mr Venn flying down the sand dune and falling on his face. Thank you to all the teachers involved and for the students having such a positive attitude and willingness to try new things. On the 18th and 19th we have our Rock bands performing in the Hall. Monday will be the senior bands and Tuesday the primary students will perform. Thank you to Mr Graham Galbraith for all of his work with the students this year. The concerts start at 7.00pm and everyone is welcome. Last week the Prep, Year 1 and 2 students went to Warrnambool for Possum Magic performance. I know this was a great activity for all of those students involved and they had a great time. Thank you to Ms Poustie for organising this. The Year 12 and 11 exams are well under way and I am sure the students will be eagerly awaiting the results. This week we have had new basketball rings installed around the school and some old ones removed. This I am sure will be appreciated by the students. At the start of next year some of this area will be used for parking and we will have a designated area for parents/ visitors to park at the front of the school. A special mention to all those students who were media celebrities during the week as they appeared on sunrise for the weather report in Port Campbell. I must admit as Principal I was very proud to see these students represent the school in such a positive way. DAVIN REID PRINCIPAL

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

This past fortnight has been really rewarding as we have witnessed our Year 12 students continuing their exams, with some sitting their final exams on Tuesday. We look forward to next Friday night’s Year 12 Formal so that we can celebrate with families the official end to our Year 12 students’ year. It will be a bittersweet evening with 11 families leaving our school. I thank them for their commitment to the school and entrusting their children to us. Well done to all students who represented the school this week in interschool cricket. Year 8 students are out again tomorrow for further games. The Year 11 into Year 12 Head Start program begins on Thursday 14th. The purpose of the program is to ensure that students studying either VCAL or VCE begin their studies early and are aware of the requirements of the year ahead. There will be homework set for students in all subjects and they are required

to have this completed over the break, ready for 2020. The work set will be a requirement of the courses students study so every attempt should be made to complete this. Year 10 and Year 9 Jump Up students will begin their Year 11 courses from December 2nd, with the Year 10 activity/celebration day running on Friday December 6th. This will be the last official day of Year 10 students. Year 9 students will be required to attend normal classes after this up until the end of the year with the awards assembly taking place on Wednesday 18th December. Year 8 camp is coming up quickly; can all students please ensure that they have their enrolment forms back to Ms Whitworth as soon as possible. We hope you have a fantastic time on this camp and thanks to Ms Whitworth and Mr Harris for their work in organising the camp this year. DAN WALKER SECONDARY ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL

Walk to School Colouring Competition

Well done all those students who colourfully decorated a Walktober scooter, bike or shoe for this year’s drawing competition. Your drawings looked amazing. 2019 winners are: Grade 5 / 6: Paige Redshaw Grade 3 / 4: Alyssa Brown Grade 1 / 2: Harry Lawson Prep: Elise Nicholls

TAPping into small, old engines As part of their physics investigation of small engines our Year 7 science students visited the South Western District Restoration Group’s rally ground in Cobden. Adam Edge explained that the Club had over 130 members and that the Club’s aim was to foster interest in the restitution and restoration of steam or oil engines and other vintage articles. Club members generously showed students through sheds which included a 1908 vintage steam engine, a vertical fire tube boiler and a working scale model of a steam engine. Adam described the mechanism and force that drove a Fence Master post borer which was powered by a 1960’s Landrover and was used in paddocks to replace crank hand-powered post borers. Students examined a reducer gas unit which produced goal gas for a Crossley engine and they learnt about the workings of a Ruston Hornsby oil engine produced in 1920 that would have driven a large generator which supplied power for homesteads, cottages and buildings at Coleraine. Other agricultural equipment included a demonstration model Eclipse Milker and a wire tie hay baler that was towed to piles of hay in a paddock, then hay was pitchforked into the hopper where the bales were formed and the operator tied them off. Students also visited the Cistern Chapel which is nothing like the Sistine Chapel! Thanks Adam, Peter, Steve, Ian, Neil, Russell and Barrie – you’ve really made forces and physics come alive, we are really looking forward to our workshop at TAP’s On! The Big Cheddar Our Year 8 Science students have made their own Camembert cheese in the classroom in a small scale operation, so as a comparison, Steve Billington introduced students to the large scale cheese making processes of Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory and Saputo Australia. Students learnt that the Saputo site in Allansford is the biggest dairy site in Australia employing over 800 people. The Allansford plant yields 10% of the milk produced in Australia and 48% of the product mix is cheese with 30% of the Cheddar Cheese made in Australia produced here. It was interesting to note, that despite the volume differences and mechanisation, that many of the techniques were similar to those undertaken by our students to produce their own cheese.

There is collection point in our school office.

Colour Explosion Family Fun Day

By now all students should have a copy of their registration and

sponsorships forms. Spares are available at the library or the office. Anyone is welcome to participate so bring along all your friends and family. Registrations are welcome on the day but

appreciated early for catering purposes.

This year we have been extremely lucky to be sponsored by the Cobden Community Bank. This means less costs and more profit

going straight back into our school to benefit our students. Attending our Colour Run is a great fun way to contribute to the

school and we encourage families to get their primary and secondary students involved.

We’ve also had some very generous businesses donate some

amazing prizes!! So here are the sponsorship prizes for the students that raise the most money...

Prize 1- Hercules 50 inch Acrylic Basket Ball system valued at

$749 thanks to Rebel Warrnambool. Prize 2- Otway Fly Family (2 adults 2 children) Zip Line pass

valued at $375. Prize 3- Tree Top Adventures Family pass for a 2.5 hour

adventure session for 2 adults and 2 children valued at $175.

Raffle tickets will also be on sale from Milk and Honey and at selected times at the front of the Timboon IGA prior to the event. Again we have a list of amazing prizes being donated

from very generous businesses. Check our TSPA face book page for more information.

We can’t wait to see you all get colourful on December 1st!

Newsletter article: Bushfire At-Risk Register - Schools

Version 1 | December 2010

School procedures for the bushfire season

Fire danger ratings and warnings are used in Victoria to provide clear direction on the safest options for preserving life.

Schools and children’s services listed on the DET Bushfire At-Risk Register (BARR) will be closed when a Code Red fire danger rating day is determined in their Bureau of Meteorology district. Our school has been identified as being one of those at high bushfire risk and is listed on the BARR.

Where possible, we will provide parents with up to four days notice of a potential Code Red day closure by letter and SMS message and Compass. A Code Red day will be determined by the Emergency Management Commissioner no later than 1.00 pm the day before the potential closure. Once we are advised of the confirmation of the Code Red day we will provide you with advice before the end of the school day.

Once confirmed, the decision to close will not change, regardless of improvements in the weather forecast. This is to avoid confusion and help your family plan alternative care arrangements for your child. It is also important to note that:

No staff will be on site on days where the school is closed due to a forecast Code Red day.

School camps will be cancelled if a Code Red fire danger rating day is determined for the Bureau of Meteorology district in which the camp is located.

As a bus co-ordinating school all bus routes will be cancelled.

Depending on which Bureau of Meteorology district is impacted bus route cancellations may affect our school.

On these Code Red days families are encouraged to enact their Bushfire Survival Plan – on such days children should never be left at home or in the care of older children.

For those of us living in a bushfire prone area, the CFA advise that when Code Red days are forecast, the safest option is to leave the night before or early on the morning of the Code Red day.

As part of preparing our school for potential hazards such as fire, we have updated and completed our Emergency Management Plan,

What can parents do?

Make sure your family’s bushfire survival plan is up-to-date and includes alternative care arrangements in the event that our school is closed.

Ensure we have your current contact details, including your mobile phone numbers. Keep in touch with us by reading our newsletters or Compass, [by checking our website https://www.timboonp12.vic.edu.au/ and by talking to your child’s teacher or any other member of the teaching staff about our emergency management plan.

Most importantly at this time of year, if you’re planning a holiday or short stay in the bush or in a coastal area, you should check warnings in advance of travel and remain vigilant during your stay.

If your child is old enough, talk to them about bushfires and your family’s bushfire survival plan.

You can access more information about children’s services closures on the Department of Education and Training website – see http://www.education.vic.gov.au/about/programs/health/pages/closures.aspx
