6th Grade year at a Glance Timeline for Transition Activities

Time for Course Selections! GET EXCITED! February marks the opening of the course selection window for junior high. During the month of February, counselors will engage 6th graders in activities preparing them for course selections. Students will learn the difference between core, elective, year-long, and semester courses while developing their course card. This is also the time to inquire about Pre-AP, AVID, and GT courses for which your student may be eligible.

How can parents get involved? Look for information in your child’s weekly folder. Counselors from the feeder junior highs send fliers to the elementary campuses with pre-registration meeting dates. Attend the meeting to be sure that you are well informed. The course selection window will close at the end of February.

This is also a great time to check-in on your student’s Naviance usage. Take a moment to log in together at home and view the top career clusters of interest that have been identified. You can narrow down your search and explore specific careers through video. Naviance provides a wealth of opportunities to actively engage in future planning for courses, colleges, and careers. Students will continue to use Naviance through 12th grade.

AP Ambassador Visits In January, parents had the opportunity to hear from secondary curriculum directors at our annual Pre-AP Parent Night. As a follow-up to this event, in February, junior and senior AP Ambassadors will visit 6th graders at all elementary campuses. During this time, high school students share their insights and experiences as a student enrolled in rigorous coursework. 6th graders hear about the benefits of choosing Pre-AP classes, support they will receive when enrolled, and which courses are available in RISD. In addition, the AP Ambassadors share tidbits about what colleges are looking for when selecting students. One of the most common topics discussed is how to manage the rigorous coursework, extracurricular, and other things that impact a junior high student’s schedule. Take a moment to ask your student what he/she thinks about enrolling in Pre-AP courses. Remember- All students are eligible for Pre-AP courses.
