Managing your time in 3rd year

Final Year

When i started third year i didnt realise how hectic it would be. We were given a few weeks to select our briefs then we were pretty much on our own. The occa-sional tutorial and class meetings helped, however it is down to you to manage your time efficiently and effec-tively between all of your projects. 4 Projects running at the same time was new to me and i found it very dif-ficult splitting time between each project. I would spend more time on my favourite projects and leave the more boring ones un-done. Not forgeting the dissertation that runs throughout the whole process also. Now coming close to finishing my third year, i look back and wish i had managed my time better.

Calender for Design solution?

The proposed solution

It began looking at ical, and differ-ent ways that people manage their time, such as to-do lists, priority lists, advice from teachers etc. I personally find ical quite helpful to remind me of important dates and deadlines as i work part time also.

Made specifically for design stu-dents in their final year, this soft-ware attempts to take into consid-eration important aspects of your lifestyle and give you a template of how much time you should spend on each project.

Once you have an overall time pe-riod for each project, you can split the weeks up into a design proc-ess that suits you. You can set how many projects you want to work on simultainiously which i found was the main problem, as researching for 4 projects at the same time gets confusing!

Other features include to-do lists, links to your tutor, to set you tasks and share informtion with other classmates.

Welcome to Design Calender

This is the final design of the best new way to manage your design projects! Once you open design calender for the first time, you will be greeted by the welcome message, and a quick overview of all the features and buttons. Once this is understood, it will then take you through a setup up of your own personal design calender. How many projects you are doing, your deadline, other commit-ments are all questions you’ll need to answer in order for the calender to generate a calender specific to your lifestyle.

Daily View: Weekly View:

This interface is the daily view for a student using the Design Calender. As you can see on the left is a list of 4 projects that i am currently work-ing on. These are split into 4 sections that can be enlarged and mini-mized depending which project you are focusing on. The title for this section is “Silvia’s set tasks”, this relates to my tutor that has control over setting me certain tasks that she thinks i need to complete. As you complete these tasks, a bar will show you your progression that can also be seen by your tutor. Below is the class chat section, you can chat to classmates about work or just general chat about lectures or work.

Each section on the left is customizable, so you can change class chat to the email function, which will allow you to view your emails through the calender application. This section also includes a personal to-do list that can be personal notes of things you need to finish off or com-plete. This interface is the weekly view for a student using the Design Calender. You now have a wider scope of the week ahead, incase you want to plan ahead. As you can see there are a few tutorials booked for monday, this was set by the tutor using her own administration calender, meaning she wants to see you in regards to that particular project.

This is the adminstrative view that has a bit more authority over the student version. This is only available to teachers and course directors as it can control and view other students activities. For instance on the left, this tutor has decided to have all her year groups and students listed, where you select anyone and see their progress. She has ac-cess also to other teachers and staff members.

After clickin on a student that they are interested in, the gallery op-tion is available, where students work is available to view if they have uploaded some. This feature is also available for students, where you can share and view other classmates work.

Weekly View: Monthly View:

This section also includes a personal to-do list that can be personal notes of things you need to finish off or com-plete. This interface is the weekly view for a student using the Design Calender. This interface is the monthly view for a student using the Design Cal-ender. This give you an even wider scope, for planning trips away or just doing a general overview of a entire month. The coloured weeks refer to the setup that you part-take in when your setting up your calender. The colours refer to each project and relates to the design process and what you should be working on.

After clickin on a student that they are interested in, the gallery op-tion is available, where students work is available to view if they have uploaded some. This feature is also available for students, where you can share and view other classmates work.

Once your work has been viewed and analysed, the tutor is then able to set more tasks for you to complete, or to view things that might assist you in your design process.
