1. Keep your radar out for time-management tips from other students/ teachers. They know the routine and can give you hints for getting things done.
2. Write to-do lists and keep them short. Use 80-20 rule suggested by Alan Lakein (1973).
Twenty Percent of the items on your list should yield 80 percent of the value.
In a list of 10 items, identify 2 and have a plan for getting them done.
3. As you look at your to-do list, identify 5 minute tasks, 15 minute tasks, and 1-hour tasks (and try to figure out when they can be done). You’d be surprised at what you can accomplish during in-between times with little planning.
4. Set realistic goals.
For example, you may not be able to contact every parent every week, but you can make a commitment to contacting five parents a week. Before you know it, you’ll have contacted all the parents of students in your class.
6. Learn how to delegate. Can someone help you with all or part of a project? Perhaps a YCP library staff member or other students can assist you with tasks.
“The real cause of paperwork crises is a decision-making problem – picking up the same piece of paper five times and putting it down again because you can’t decide what to do with it.”
- Stephanie Winston
7. Think about how technology can help. Keep your eye out for computer programs to help with your needs...
8. Avoid the temptation to overplan. As a student teacher, you will be interrupted by parents, administrators, and, naturally students. It is important to keep these interruptions in mind to realize that they are part of the job.
“It is better to strike a straight blow with a crooked stick than spend my whole life trying to straighten the darn thing out.”
- Ken Blanchard
9. Plan for long-term, monthly, weekly, and daily goals, but be prepared to change your plans. Be flexible with your plan when legitimate situations arise.
“Time is a natural resource – like fuel. When it is abundant, we take it for granted; when it becomes scarce, we search for that extra gallon, regardless of cost. Wouldn’t you give anything for another gallon of time with some of your friends who are gone? Time is a precious gift – every second, every minute, every day – use it wisely. You cannot pay the cost of losing time.”- Sonny Gann
15. This is the tough part: Schedule time for planning. The payoff for a short time spent planning is tremendous.
