The rubella outbreak is spreading fast. ~ Adults should also get vaccinations. ~

Rubella is an infectious viral disease which displays the symptoms of rashes and fevers.

If a woman in the early stages of pregnancy contracts rubella, the infant can suffer from CRS (Congenital Rubella Syndrome), which causes manifestations such as, cataracts, sensorineural deafness, congenital heart diseases and development disorders.

Under the current law, children must get the vaccinations twice; at 12-24 months and 5-7 years old, before entering elementary school. There is no problem in getting another rubella vaccination even if you are already immunized against rubella.

Pregnant women are not able to receive rubella vaccinations, so, if you are in your 20s to 40s and are unsure about your vaccination history you should be vaccinated.

Rubella vaccinations are available at medical institutions which provide vaccination services.

For more information, please contact: Infectious Disease Countermeasure Section, Public Health Centre Community Health Division Tel: 27-8595. The cost of vaccination varies by institution. Please contact your local hospitals or clinics directly for inquiries.
