● On December 6, 1941, Japan waspreparing tomount an attack on PearlHarbor.A Japanese spy in Pearl Harbor walked rightup to the telegraph office in town and sent adispatchtohisconfederatesdescribingwherethewarshipswerelocated.Thetelegramcost$6.82and apparently nobody in the telegraph officethoughtitwassuspicious.● On Dec. 6, 1941, a new employee attheOffice ofNaval Intelligence,Mrs.DorothyEdgers (who had been employed there onlya month), decoded an intercepted Japanese message that indicatedHonoluluwas tobe thetargetofaJapaneseattack.Sheshowedittohersuperiorofficer,whosaid itneededmoreworkand could wait until Monday.● In May of 1942, the Japanese werepreparing to mount a major attack somewhereintheCentralPacific.TheU.S.hadbrokentheJapanesecodeandwereawareoftheimpendingattack. However, they didn’t know what the targetwouldbe.TheJapanesecalled the target“AF” and theAmericans could not figure outwhatplacethatdenoted.Thentheycameupwitha scheme: they had Midway send an uncoded messagesayingtheirwaterdistillationplanthadbroken down and they were short on drinkingwater.
