TISI SANGAM – National President Namaskaram Greetings to all our members and well wishes. I wish to thank the TISI National Executive Board and all the District executives together with the TIV and TIM Sangam for carrying out operations of Sangam during these trying times. On my return I have visited all the TISI Sangam Schools including the College of Nursing, Temples, met with District executives and the TIM & the TIV’s. One of the things that stood out during my tour was the spirit of service by our members, executives, school staff and parents. It was very pleasing to see the voluntary work that all our people were engaged in to assist with the Sangam schools lunch program. And not only Sangam schools were assisted but several of our other schools were also served lunch through the program. After the easing of the restrictions districts are now able to perform their normal temple activities as well as organizing mini- conventions. This year the TIV together with the TIM will have a mini-convention in Nadi to provide some sporting and cultural activities since the Annual convention was cancelled. Namaskaram

Greetings to all our members and well wishes. Although we all had been looking forward to a very

prosperous year 2020, the Pandemic that hit the world in March this year has brought about a lot of grief

and uncertainty. The TISI Sangam has had its own set-backs in terms of the operations of its normal

activities, the operations of our Temples, the progress of our projects and several other plans.

Despite the challenges that we are facing, Sangam has moved on and is significantly contributing towards

the welfare of our School children, temples and members. Personally I was out of the country from the 9th

of February till early July, being one of the victims of the COVID-19. I was on Sangam business on an

invitation by the Chairman of the MIOT international Hospital in Chennai when the borders started to close down.

I wish to thank the TISI National Executive Board and all the District executives together with the TIV and TIM Sangam for

carrying out operations of Sangam during these trying times. On my return I have visited all the TISI Sangam Schools including

the College of Nursing, Temples, met with District executives and the TIM & the TIV’s. One of the things that stood out during

my tour was the spirit of service by our members, executives, school staff and parents. It was very pleasing to see the voluntary

work that all our people were engaged in to assist with the Sangam schools lunch program. And not only Sangam schools were

assisted but several of our other schools were also served lunch through the program.

After the easing of the restrictions districts are now able to perform their normal temple activities as well as organizing mini-

conventions. This year the TIV together with the TIM will have a mini-convention in Nadi to provide some sporting and cultural

activities since the Annual convention was cancelled. I urge all our members to be very vigilant and practice all care in terms of

COVID-19 precautionary guidelines and also control your expenses as we are uncertain about when this pandemic will end.

Wishing you all a very safe rest of the year.

TISI SANGAM – Secretary General

Leadership in the “Rough”

As the second decade of the 21st Century broke dusk on 01 January, it was filled with hopes for a better year

than the previous one. There were several plans for the year by TISI Sangam.

However, as the news of COVID-19 emerged around mid-January and later upgraded as a pandemic, Fiji took

immediate steps to avoid the virus from entering the country. By late March, Fiji had closed all borders

including the international airport for all commercial flights.

In matter of weeks, the world came to a grinding halt and in Fiji some 130,000 people lost their employment

due to the closure of resorts and tourism related businesses and the spillover effects. There were rapid increases in the virus

infections and deaths around the world. COVID-19 cases and deaths continue and borders around the world remain closed for travel

or tourism.

We in Fiji are fortunate that the government and its agencies like the Ministry of Health, Fiji Military and the Police Force

implemented strategies that included regional lock downs to avoid any community transmission of the virus. We are grateful and

acknowledge the efforts of each and everyone in this remarkable effort.

During this time, our members were immensely affected. We also note that our National President Sada Naicker and Secretary

Operations Kumar Sami were stranded in Chennai due to border closures and no flights and only managed to return in early July

after spending some 3 months. The current times and the future is unpredictable and all our best plans designed for 2020 are being

revisited. We are now on a purpose driven rather than a plan driven platform as we must deliver in the new reality. The new reality

of a society faced with massive unemployment, poverty and a fear of uncertain.

The COVID-19 period is a crisis period that no one imagined or experienced in the recent times. However, our Founder Swami

Sadhu Kuppuswamy served the community in Rakiraki and Tavua during the 1919 Spanish Flu pandemic by feeding sick and

transporting the infected in wheel burrows to the nearest medical centres. It is also noted that this 1919 pandemic caused the deaths

of some 9000 people only in Fiji. This was probably one of the very first humanitarian services by the founder prior to forming

TISI Sangam in 1926.

A crisis of this magnitude requires a bold, strong and proud leadership and TISI Sangam through its Executives, TIV, TIM and

Districts combined to bring invaluable strengths and attributes as we navigate this new reality and the challenges it has brought

upon us.

Our approach towards the crisis is more or less is in three time frames:

1. Respond: Deal with the current situation and manage the continuity. Our immediate response and launch of the Children’s

Lunch program is one of the projects within this frame. Our effort is simply to bridge the efforts of those parents not

employed or in reduced working hours to send children back to school.

2. Recover: Our efforts either within the organization or in cooperation with other NGO’s or Government agencies enables a

platform to learn from the current situation and plan to emerge stronger. Our cooperation with FRIEND and the COVID

Alliance provides those affected a unique opportunity for training, counseling and being self- sufficient. COVID Alliance

Centre assists people to express and regulate emotions; and resilience to stress during the crisis.

3. Prepare: The future will not be what it was yesterday nor be what it is today. A new normal will emerge and with it bring

many new challenges. With the right approach we can take tactical steps to elevate the Sangam spirit and mission of “unity

through the pathway of honesty” to move forward and create more value and positive societal impact rather than just

bounce back to status quo.

Our national efforts as described above brings not only a sense of pride but also the confirmation that we are all strong and bound

by one single objective -Serve the people.

Many joined in to assist the School Children Lunch program and many of you also expanded this program to include non-sangam

schools and we record my sincere appreciation.

These are not normal times and can best be described as crisis or rough days and the leadership and support you continue to provide

gives us the inspiration and encouragement to continue in quest of improving the lives of all people.

Namaskaram.

CEO – Updates

Namaskaram to you all.

The year 2020 started on an exciting note for all of us with a very successful seven months of the year

for TISI Sangam’s activities and projects. Despite the spread of COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on

economic and social aspects, TISI Sangam has continued to forge ahead with our plan for the year. Life

is no longer the same and the pandemic has challenged us in many fronts in relation to managing our lives.

From mid of March and several adjustments had to be made as the pandemic affected several aspects of our activities. Temples

were closed from the 26th of April until the 26th of June. With the reopening, a number of restrictions and precautions had to be put

in place. Schools reopened on the 6th of July and a number of restrictions continue to be maintained, especially related to social

gathering and activities. The Annual TISI Sangam Convention had to be cancelled as well as a number of meetings including the

Council of Management meetings and the district, temple and school AGM’s had to be postponed.

Amidst the various challenges posed by the pandemic, the TISI Sangam did not take a back seat but rose to the challenge and saw

the urgent need to assist people in our communities in whatever way possible. During the Easter weekend, the TISI Sangam

Saravana Bhavan restaurant commenced supplying lunch and refreshments to staff and patients at the Nadi Hospital COVID-19

Isolation center and as well as to our Fiji Police officers manning check points around Nadi and Lautoka. Our forefathers have left

a legacy of hard work and perseverance and that continues to motivate us to forge ahead.

After the announcement of the re-opening of the schools, the Sangam Fiji Foundation on the advice of the Secretary General,

considered assisting the students in our schools with free lunch. This started with the ‘TISI Sangam Schools Lunch Program’, which

was launched on the 8th of July and will continue until the end of the school academic year. Since March 8, the Sangam Fiji

Foundation has been distributing lunch supplies to all 26 Sangam schools and has also distributed lunch to several other schools in

various districts. Moreover, this year, after a lapse of 2 years, we were able to convene the Sangam Heads of School and

Management Seminar at the Waterfront Hotel, Lautoka on the 13th & 14th of March.

This year once again the Sevak Ratnam Sadhu Kuppuswamy Day was observed in districts and there were school based events. The

National TISI Sangam Fiji observed the day at the Suva Sangam Temple with a morning Hawan at the Temple by the NEB and the

COM delegates, followed by the flag raising and the Council of Management Meeting. This year the COM meeting fell on the 2nd

of August.

Wish you all a happy reading and stay safe.

This year so far we have had altogether 3 NEB and 1 COM meeting. The schedule of the meetings had to be changed due to the

pandemic. 2 more NEB and COM meetings will be held in Sabeto and Navua, scheduled for October and December. However,

several meetings were conducted via zoom and through emails to ensure the progress of works did not get affected much.

The 3 National TISI Sangam Temples and 16 district & branch Temples have suffered due to the Pandemic in several ways. Under

the guidance of the Devasthanam Board Chairman Mr. Gandhi Mestry and the Temple Committees our Temples have been able to

reopen with the new guidelines and precautionary measures in place. After the Temples reopened for devotees with limited public

gathering, they have been conducting their Annual Poojas as well as observing the main Hindu festivals and ceremonies. The

Thaipoosam at the Sri Siva Subramaniya Swami temple at the beginning of the year saw a very huge number of devotees gracing

the occasion at the temple from all over Fiji and abroad.
