The annual well dressing festival runs for 7 days from Ascension Day every year, with 6 wells dressed around the village, attracting many thousands of people to Tissington. The Art of Well Dressing The design is prepared weeks before the event, with new images chosen each year. For some days before the process of dressing begins, the boards on which the pictures are mounted are soaked in the village pond. After this they are plastered in clay. The picture is traced onto the boards, using a pointer or a toothed wheel and marked out with cones from the alder trees or with coffee beans. Then comes the delicate and intricate task of infilling with flower petaks and other natural materials. In a laborious process, each petal has to be put in separately, overlapping like tiles on a roof so that the rain will flow off the picture. On Ascension Day each year there is a service held in St. Mary’s Church, followed by a processionaround the village to bless each well. The Art of Well Dressing

The design is prepared weeks before the event, with new images chosen each year.
