The Indoor Climate Company

Swegon produces Titanium Flat units in our Factory in

Gembloux, Belgium. The local company employs a team of

more than 50 in modern buildings exceeding 7500 m² of floor

space, and focuses on developing and producing intelligent

products relating to air movement.

Swegon has acquired real proficiency on the matter over the

years. The Total Airflow Control (TAC) technology is one of the

major fruits of this proficiency (cf. p. 11) and is currently in its

fifth generation. This proficiency is applied also to producing

and distributing developed products.

Swegon was a visionary, so TAC technology is applied to

all the ranges of products produced in this facility. These

products have consequently been ‘ERP2015 Compliant’ for more

than 15 years.

In other words, Swegon has been declared, through audits, to

comply with the selective criteria of “positive economy” ®, a

labelling concept intended to reconcile economy and ecology.

TAC technology is at the base of its growth and is today

distributed throughout Europe.

GENERAL

Titanium - high efficiency double flow ventilation units

Swegon specialises in the design and production of double flow

ventilation units with energy recovery. The aim from the outset

was to focus on efficiency. Brochures of that period stressed

that “it is absurd to want to recover heat energy when electric

energy was being wasted…” This is why the first generation TAC

technology was already applied to this product. Accordingly,

direct current Electronically Commutated Motor (ECM) fans

with permanent magnets were systematically selected for the

development of the range. Today, with the latest product

developments, PLC anticipated the ECO design requirements

and as a direct consequence, the Flat series is compliant with

the ErP2016/2018 standards, simply thanks to a philosophical

choice…The control systems have been further improved and

are now open to MODBUS and KNX communication, as well as

to Ethernet & WIFI technologies and all their advantages.

Plug & Play

All the Flat range units are supplied as ‘Plug&Play’. The standard

settings are pre-programmed in the factory, so just connect the

power supply, the control signals and/or the remote control, and

enter the specific settings for the application. Putting the units

into use becomes a breeze…

Accessibility of components The units are designed to give the user easy access to the

different components. The doors are largely sized and fitted

with handles and / or hinges. They are removable, for easy

access, even when installed in limited space. The control panel is

likewise easy to access and centralizes all the wiring.

Counterflow exchangers

The same focus on efficiency led us to opt for counterflow

exchangers.

• These are far superior to other types of exchanger (96%).

• They ensure flawless tightness between the 2 airflows,

thereby constituting great advantage in terms of hygiene

compared with rotary exchangers.

The exchangers are in “salt-air resistant” aluminum and are

suitable for temperatures up to 80°C. They are compliant with

the DIN1946 tightness standard and are Eurovent approved

according to the EN 308 standard (measurement of heat

efficiency and validity of technical data).

High efficiency fans

The TAC fans are equipped with high efficiency DC motors at

the cutting edge of the latest technologies. They can achieve

sizeable external pressure levels, whilst guaranteeing low

consumption throughout the entire operating range.

The TAC control system guarantees the known precision from

the operating point of view and makes an active contribution to

optimized consumption.

The efficiency levels are naturally compliant with the

ErP2016/2018 standards.

Modulating bypass

All Flat units are by default equipped with a modulating bypass.

Operated entirely by control, this system cools the rooms

during the night when the differences of indoor and outdoor

temperature permit. By using the modulating bypass it can be

arranged that the supply temperature does not go below a set

value. This system can be connected to a ground-coupled heat

exchanger to improve efficiency even more. The control settings

can be adjusted by the operator.

Air filters

All the units of the Flat line are supplied as a standard with

oversized air filters (to reduce the pressure drop) that protect

the exchanger and improve the quality of the incoming air. F7

filters are mounted on the fresh air suction (outdoor air) and G4

filters on the room suction (indoor air). Replacement filter kits

are also available.

Tac4 regulation completes the system

The Flat units are fitted with a complete electronic control system

called TAC4 which is used to operate the fans, the bypass,

the anti-freeze protection of the exchanger, the valves, the

preheating coil (option), and post-heating coil (option) as well as

the external hot and/or cold exchangers (option). It is equipped

with a MODBUS, KNX , ETHERNET or WIFI communication bus

used for its interfacing and complete integration with a standard

centralized control system, or a cell phone / tablet.

Assembly / disassembly

The Titanium units can be installed easily everywhere.

The units of the Flat range are at times too bulky to be

introduced in certain rooms. That is why they can be partially

disassembled so they can be brought in the room where they

have to be installed.

In such a case, it is possible to deliver the unit ready to

be easily disassembled and reassembled on the spot.

It is nonetheless preferable to provide for this functionality,

which requires a specific assembly in the factory, from the

outset. This operation can be carried out by the installer by

following the instructions of the manual provided for this

purpose.

This is however an option which needs to be specified

beforehand when placing the order.

Contact our sales department or consult our ad hoc brochure

for more information on the subject.

Selection programmes

A selection software is available for all Titanium products series.

It can be used to determine:

• The technical characteristics of the unit under the conditions of application: power

consumption, heat efficiency, air characteristics, sound levels, etc

• The commercial aspects such as the options, price & order information

This user-friendly tool can be requested from [email protected]

 Day-care centers

They have to be selected in accordance with the application and the desired result in terms of efficiency and sound level.

Ventilation systems

With the Flat range, Swegon presents a wide, mature and

complete range of centralised ventilation units with energy

recovery. There is a unit that corresponds to each application,

if it is between 25 and 1,700 l/s. Whether the application is

commercial or residential residential or otherwise, all the

units have high efficiency, high-tech EC fans operated by an

intelligent TAC4 system, and exchangers are used to recover up

to 96% of the heat energy contained in the ventilation cycle.

These characteristics guarantee an optimal efficiency for the

unit. Since April 2015, our Flat Series features an ECO version.

Each of these ECO units is equipped with backward fans (plug

fans). This innovation, in line with new market requirements,

cares for better fan yield and lower electrical consumption.

Summary

Advantages of Titanium units

The Flat are units with high efficiency with low operating

and maintenance costs .

All Flat units can be configured simply by using a (graphical)

remote control or a dedicated PLC App or by using a more

sophisticated network (SAT Modbus or KNX).

The air breathed in the buildings is always pleasantly fresh

and healthy.

The systems avoid the damages caused by humidity and

mildew.

Extensive energy savings thanks to high efficiency energy

exchangers.

The constant pressure mode (CPs) ensures individualised

centralised ventilation in an apartment building. The

constant torque mode (TQ) allows an external system to

control the fans via the torque or the rotationspeed of the

fan.

The constant airflow mode (CA) ensures that the flow rate

is maintained irrespective of the pressure drop.

The constant airflow mode linked to a 0-10V (LS) signal

links the flow rate directly to a sensor value (example, an air

quality sensor).

The post-heating and/or cooling coils (option) ensure a

desired comfort temperature of the supply air.

Flat units for installation in false ceilings.

Flat is a range of controlled mechanical ventilation

units with high efficiency heat recovery (up to 96%),

composed of a counter flow aluminium plate exchanger,

a stainless steel condensate collection tray, filters (class

G4/F7), a 100% bypass and centrifugal fans with high

efficiency electronic motor (TAC series), from which it

draws all the advantages. It is designed for applications

going up to 2000 m³/h. The efficiency of the heat

exchanger often makes adding a post-heating (or post-

cooling) system superfluous, although such a system is

provided as an option (external module).

Their “flat” design (320 to 400 mm high) makes

them ideal for false ceiling applications, which means

substantial savings in terms of the use of the available

surface area (€/m²).

It is delivered ready to use, entirely pre-wired - the

options too -- and with a remote control (to choose)

or a MODBUS/KNX communication for controlling the

device without opening it… Just connect it to the power

supply (outside the unit and to the remote control or the

MODBUS/KNX communication to activate the unit, and

it’s ready to run -- irrespective of the options chosen:

electric preheating (anti-frosting), water or electric post-

heating, post-cooling, valves, etc.

The Flat units can be equipped with heat-ing elements (pre-heating). On the incom-ing air side.It is possible to insert an electric pre-heat-ing coil to avoid the risk of the exchanger frosting in case of very low exterior suc-tion temperatures. It is supplied entirely pre-wired to the TAC4 regulation and can withstand a temperature as low as about -40°C (see table below) for suction at an interior temperature of +22°C, without

risk of frosting, depending on the flow and humidity rates concerned. The power of the KWin exchanger is modulated to maintain the post-exchange temperature equal to the no frost set point of the coun-ter flow exchanger. If the temperatures are such that this temperature cannot be attained even though the KWin is at maxi-mum power, the regulation will reduce the supply and exhaust air flow rates (balance maintained) to attain the set point.

This external module is provided for the Titanium flat models and

can be mounted either in the supply air ductway, or directly on the

unit. It comprises a water (+/-) or evaporation/condensation 4-row

coil .

It can be used for the post-heating and/or post-cooling of the

supply airstream.

If the module takes a water coil, it is supplied ready to be

connected to the hydraulic network (+/-), with the full regulation

and a motorised 3-way valve. It suffices to set the requested

supply air temperature; the regulation will modulate the capacity

of the coil to attain it.

motoriseD Dampers / rounD/square inlet Flat series: accessories

The Flat units can be equipped with mo-

torised dampers delivered pre-wired to

cut draughts when the unit is deactivat-

ed. They are delivered with a pre-wired

servomotor and are controlled entirely by

the regulation system. A starting delay of

the fans is designed to allow the damper

to open first.

They are made of galvanised steel and

are designed and sized to reduce the air

resistance optimally. They are airtight

thanks to the particular design of blades

that fit into each other.

They are 130 mm deep.

tac4 regulation system choose the right moDe oF operation.

Depending on the requirements and characteristics of the application, there is an airflow control mode that will fit the situation: constant airflow (CA), constant pressure (CPs), variable constant airflow liked to a 0-10V signal (LS) or constant (CT) are the 4 airflow controls from which to choose. The master/slave link between supply and exhaust (which may be deactivated if necessary) always ensures for a balanced ventilation. This means that the when the exhaust airflow fluctuates because there is a request for more ventilation, the supply airflow will always adapt to preserve the preset balanced between the 2 flows. This occurs, independently from the pressure conditions.

Constant airflow (CA mode) is used when one or several stable air volumes are needed. The fan will deliver the requested airflow independently from pressure conditions. This is the simplest mode, it allows 3 different pre-set airflows (low, medium, high) and is used with simple control systems.

Variable constant airflow (LS mode) is probably the most economical ventilation mode, because the airflow actually provided depends on the actual air renewal needed at the moment, so there will be no superfluous ventilation. In this case, the constant airflow requested is linked to a 0-10V signal, measuring the CO2 level for example. When the level is high (many people present), the airflow rate will be adjusted accordingly, and vice-versa, when there are

few people in the room. Energy consumption will follow the real ventilation requirement. is probably the most economical ventilation mode, because the airflow actually provided depends on the actual air renewal needed at the moment, so there will be no superfluous ventilation. In this case, the constant airflow requested is linked to a 0-10V signal, measuring the CO2 level for example. When the level is high (many people present), the airflow rate will be adjusted accordingly, and vice-versa, when there are few people in the room. Energy consumption will follow the real ventilation requirement..

Variable flow rate to maintain a constant pressure (CPs mode): a particularly interesting application of this operating mode is undoubtedly the individualized ventilation of apartments by a centralized ventilation unit. Once configured, the ventilation of each apartment remains constant even if several apartments change their ventilation demand, as the pressure in the network is maintained constant. A pressure measurement sensor is used to configure this very useful mode.

Constant torque mode (TQ mode): This mode simulates the ‘normal’ way for a fan to operate when using a frequency controller or a transformer. The fan torque is modulated instead of the airflow. The mode allows the preset of 3 different ‘percentages’ of the maximum fan torque. This mode was essentially developed for plug fan applications where constant airflow feature is not required.

The 3 operating modes: concrete examples

CA stands for “constant airflow.” This means that one (or more) airflow is selected and the TAC4 control will operate the fan to provide the actual airflow requested, irrespective of the pressure drop. Example: I request 1350 m³/h from the fan/control and I obtain, irrespective of the pressure drop of the network, not about 1350 m³/h, but exactly 1350 m³/h….

LS stands for “link to a 0-10V signal.” This means a specific linear relationship between a 0/10V value (representing temperature, humidity, CO2 rate, etc.) and the actual airflow is configured, and the fan/control will see that this link, irrespective of the pressure drop of the network, is delivered. Example: “I create a link between airflow and CO2 level as shown in graph 2. If I read a CO2 level of 1000 ppm, I need 900 m³/h of airflow. The fan will deliver 900 m³/h, independently from the pressure conditions.”

CPs stands for “constant pressure.” This means that you enter an initialization flow rate to determine the resulting pressure, which will then be stored and serve as the reference pressure value to be maintained constant by the system. It is also possible to introduce the pressure value directly, if it is known. The fan will then operate as CA fan, but with the mission to keep the stored pressure value constant. Example: “Once the network is balanced, I note that to obtain 150 m³/h in each apartment, I am creating a pressure loss of 185 Pa in the network. I store this value and the system will change its flow rate to maintain it constant. This will ensure a constant flow rate in each apartment, irrespective of the changes that each inhabitant makes to his ventilation…”

CT stands for “constant torque”. This means the fan will operate like a “normal” fan without constant airflow features, just like if normal AC motor is being powered through a variable frequency controller.

any normal working mode.

Basic Time table : enables the automatic working working of

the unit based on 4 time slots having their own configurable

set points. Each day of the week has the same time slots but

can be set as an offday.

Advanced Time table (available with GRC option or through

Modbus communication) : enables the automatic working

mode of the unit following 6 time slots having their own

comfort temperature can be configured.

Seasonal management : allows to disable features such as

bypass, post heating and post cooling according to the current

period of the year.

Free cooling : automatic free cooling of the building during

summer nights, when specific temperature conditions are met,

with:

Open/closed bypass: based on inside and outside T°

the bypass is opened to supply fresh air in the building

without energy recovery to cool the building down.

The bypass will then be closed automatically when set

temperatures values are achieved. The opening can also

be forced independently from T° values.

Modulating bypass: same principle as for “open/closed”

models but the opening/closing of the bypass is

modulated (0-100%) to keep a set supply T° constant.

Post heating / cooling : automatic power control of a heating

or cooling coil to reach the set comfort temperature and keep

it constant. The reference temperature can be either on

supply or exhaust air (“room t°”).

Comfort T° : comfort temperature control can be made via

the post heating/cooling or the free cooling with modulating

bypass.

Damper control : temporized opening/closing of inlet dampers

(option) to avoid undesired incoming air when the unit is

stopped.

Advanced anti frost protection of the heat exchanger : The

TAC4 controls the exhaust T° after the heat exchangers and

keep it above a set value (antifrost T°)

4 types of protection are available :

1. Warming up the incoming fresh air using an electrical or

water preheating coil.

2. Reduction of the supply airflow.

3. Control of the air quantity passing through the

modulating bypass. In this cas a postheating coil is

usually necessary.

4. If rotary heat exchanger : rotation speed modulation

of the wheel.
