Varel · City between Forest and Sea

The city of Varel is situated in beautiful scenery between large woodland and the North Sea bay called Jadebusen. With its population of 25.000 it is the largest city of the district of Frisia. Beside being the home of a harbour in Varel and the village of Dangast it offers all opportunities to enjoy a trip and manifold sightseeing attractions.

Culturally Varel offers an interesting programme all year round: Open Air Concerts, “Varel Wednesday Live”, Varel Concerts, events in the railway station, exhibitions, readings, seasonal event weeks and many more. A weekly market on Neumarktplatz Wednesdays and Saturdays 7.30am – 12.30pm. Please also notice our calendar of events on www.varel.de

Dangast - Arts & Nature at the Jade-bay

Uniquely situated on a geest ridge bordering the World Heritage Wad-den Sea, Dangast induced the Earl of Bentinck to found exactly here a first seaside resort, already 200 years ago. Strolling through the village past the little fisherman´s houses you are greeted by works of art, docu-menting a long-standing tradition of artists.

Here you find diverse facilities to vary your spare time activities. Expe-rience the particular atmosphere of your North Sea holidays during a tour with the pleasure steamer “Etta von Dangast”, a cycling tour along the dyke with teatime, a guided walk along the information paths, a walking tour through the mud flats at low tide or a visit to one of the many events.

Varel Harbour

Enjoy the fresh breeze at Va-rel Harbour, visit Varel Brew-house or the Spijöök Museum of Curiosities, refresh with a draught beer in the “Smallest Pub” and enjoy fresh fish in the restaurants around the harbour.

To express his gratitude to his father who died in1667, Anton I von Alden-burg donated the orphanage of Varel in 1671. This foundation was and is still today uninterruptedly active socially and charitably. The impressive baroque building of Varel Orphanage is a unique architectural jewel of the district of Oldenburg. It is a living, secural architectural monument of national rank, arching from the 17th century to our presence. Today it is also home of the registry office and offers room for concerts.

Kurhaus DangastAn der Rennweide 46 · 04451/4409Opening hours Fri – Sun, public holidays: 9am – 7pm

The Kurhaus Dangast, formerly part of the seaside bathing resort, today is a tourist café and meeting place of the region. Enjoy the unique view of the Jade-bay while trying a piece of the meanwhile legendary rhubarb cake. The particular mood and the interaction of art and nature are distinctly perceptible.

Varel Forest

One of Varel´s landmarks are the stony pillars called “Steinernen Pfeiler”. The forest´s access-gate at the end of the street Windallee symbolizes one of Varel´s characteristics: where else is there a natural forest in the middle of a city? It is a recreation area in central location – not only for those in need of relaxation, nature explorers, hikers, cyclists and joggers.
