IoT in the Smart Home/Smart Building Environment

The “Internet of Things” is a buzzword in the world of information technology. What still has to become part of the general knowledge is already a long known term in expert groups for a new development boost.

Everyday objects become intelligent and communicate via the internet. According to visionaries until 2020 50 Billions of such objects will communicate via the internet.

However, the Internet of Things is not still up in the air but has become reality already today.

Let’s see the story in the Smart Home/Smart Building Environment, where the communication via Internet or at list IP network is a minimum requirement.

IoT in the Smart Home/Smart Building Environment

Building Automation and Control (BAC) is a transversal industry in the Building Construction, with at list 35-40 Years of continuous development in the Home (Residential) and Building (Commercial) areas. Let’s see his role from energy perspective:The key-role of Building Automation and Control and TBM (Technical Building Management) is to insure the balance between the desired human comfort - which must be maximal, and energy used to obtain this goal - which must be minimal! The scope of BAC and TBM covers in accordance with their role from one side all Technical Building Systems (where the effect of the BAC is used in the calculation procedures) and from another side the global optimization Energy Performance of a Building.

IoT in the Smart Home/Smart Building Environment

BAC industry is a result of the application in practice of the “cybernetic” concepts, described first by the mathematician Norbert Wiener in 1947: Cybernetics is a multidisciplinary discipline who put together the knowhow of automation, electronics and information technology who develop the systemic approach and the control philosophy with feedback. BAC is one of discipline issued by this studies and is used in Home and Building.

One of the consequence of the DIGITALIZATION is that control in BAC do his evolution and use starting with 90’ the DDC approach: DIRECT DIGITAL CONTROL!

Beside the functions of BAC, also the system conceptual architecture go step by step to the decentralization of the intelligence into the controllers, as closed is possible to the physical phenomena they control.

• CEN/TC247 do his work, consistently in the latest 25 years, following primarily 3 goals:

IoT in the Smart Home/Smart Building Environment

Some histories of this rather young industry teach us things to don’t repeat. Let’s see the communication protocols in Building history.

Three steps could be identified in this history from 1991 till 20xx:

1) Misunderstanding (war of communication protocols) (1991-1995)2) Choose the most used protocols (1995-2002)3) Convergence: END of BUS WAR (2002-201y)

IoT in the Smart Home/Smart Building Environment

AND NOW WE SHARE THE IP NETWORK WITH THE Iot’s!

SO a coordinate effort to reach this goal between CEN/CENELEC/ETSI IS A MUST and CEN/TC247 IS READY TO COOPERATE!

In between, the BAC industry do actions to go in this direction:

1) FIRST INDUSTRY ALLIANCES:

FAIRHEAR ALLIANCE

THREAD ALLIANCE

2) COMEBACK TO STANDARDIZATION WORK!

Fairhair Alliance Vision

The Fairhair Alliance vision is a future where building automation and lighting control systems utilize the Internet of Things.

Share a common networking infrastructure based on IEEE and IETF standards.

Interoperability across BA and LC domain standards for common network services.

Domain standard application levels and eco-systems evolved into the IoT space.

U. Wirth / July 2003\CEN-TC247_GeneralInfo.ppt

The Communication Protocols alone do NOTHING!

They are, as the operating system, in charge to do servicesTo the APPLICATIONS PROCESS

These APPLICATIONS PROCESSIES are the active elements who ask for communications! communiquer.THE APPLICATIONS PROCESS ARE THE END EMMITERS AND RECEIVERS OF DATA FLOW

DOUGLAS COMER : TCP/IPThe ANSWER of BAC INDUSTRY AND CEN/TC247 of these obvoius facts is to follow the EVOLUTION of « APPLICATIONS STANDARDS »!BACnet, LON et KONNEX are standards which do a standardized link betwen the BAC APPLICATIONS PROCESS!
