SCVL and National Reference Laboratory of GASI are state laboratories involved in food, animal feed and veterinary drug residues testing. It
seems that in some of the fields (e.g. testing for veterinary drug residues, chemical contaminants)
are carried out by both laboratories. The analytical work of the SCVL until recently was more
or less exclusively for the meat industry (export).

The EU‘s General Food Law makes traceability compulsory to all food and feed businesses.
All food and feed business operators must be able to identify where their products have come from and where they are going
( one step back – one step forward ).

Animal identification and livestock/meat traceability are not
themselves food safety, animal disease prevention or quality assurance
programmes, but they facilitate public health, veterinary public health and

Reliable traceability schemes are often a precondition for meat producing countries
to enter export markets. Hence traceability is not only a health issue but has also become a marketing
tool. The goal is to achieve transparency in the
meat chain “from farm to table”. - - -

In general traceability measures can be used to
• improve management of risks related to food safety and animal health issues;
• guarantee products’ authenticity and give reliable information to customers;
• improve products’ quality and processes.
