Title: The English ReformationLOs: -Identify key aspects of Henry VIIIs life-Understand the nature of the church of England and outline the steps that led to its establishment

Henry at 18He was fluent in English, Latin, French, and Spanish. He was athletic: good at jousting, tennis, hunting.poet and composer. Overall, an interesting guy, and jack of all trades.

Henry VIII-Who was he?2 The Pope gave Henry the title: Defender of the Faith However, complications soon led henry to make England a protestant nation.

Why did this happen?

King Henry VIII of England (1509- 1547)3Henry needed a male heir. Unfortunately his wife, Catherine of Aragon, bore him only one daughter. When Catherine turned 42, Henry decided Catherine could not give him A son, so he jettedCatherine had been married to Henrys brother Arthur. Henry quoted the bible to explain gods punishment If a man takes his brother's wife, they will die childless (Leviticus 20:21) What happened?

4The Catholic Church didnt permit divorce, but it would grant annulments, which essentially say the marriage wasnt legal to begin with. BUT, when Henrys request reached the Pope, Rome happened to be surrounded by the troops of Emperor Charles V (Catherines Uncle) who, for obvious reasons, wasnt keen to see the marriage dissolved. After much stalling, the Pope refused. Henry was not pleased.

Pleeease?5He calls Parliament and in 1534 and passes the **Act of Supremacy**, which makes the English king the head of the Church in England, not the pope. Pope excommunicated him

*** Henry the 8th was no supporter of Luther ***So what does Henry do?65
