    Helping the Patient Bathe

    Bathing the patient is important because it cleanses the body andeliminates body odor.A Patient may be given:Complete Bed Bath given to a patient who is tooweak or sick to move.

    Partial bed bath is given to a patient who is able totake care of most of her or his bathing needs.

    Tub bath is given to a patient on order of the doctor

    for therapeutic reasons.

    Shower may be given to a patient who isrecovering from illness (convalescent patient)

    And one who is strong enough to walk around.

    Rules to follow in bathing a patient

    1. Assemble all the equipment you will need in givingthe bath : soap and dish, washcloth, wash bin, baththermometer (if available), face and bath towels,clean clothes or gown , lotion, comb or hairbrush,disposable gloves (if necessary), lotion or baby oil,clean bed linen.

    2. Always cover the patient with a bath blanket beforegiving the bed bath.

    3. Help the patient assume a comfortable positionand wash only part of the body at a time. Wash ,rinse , and dry each part very well. Change the

    water when necessary.4. Be sure to rinse off all the soap

    5. Put a clean gown on the patient after giving her/hima bath.

    6. Comb the patients hair if he/she cannot do this for herself/himself.Clean also the ears and nails (fingernails and toenails) may betrimmed and cleaned.

    7. Remove all the bathing equipment from the bedside and clean thearea. Discard dirty gowns and linens and change the bedding.

    Giving a Back Rub

    Back Rub usually given to the patient after the bathto relax the muscles and stimulate circulation.

    Kneading is done by picking up tissue between thethumb and the fingers.

    Procedure in giving the patient a back rub:

    1. Tell the patient that you are going to give he/ him a back rub. Pullthe curtain around the bed for privacy and raise the bed to acomfortable.2. Use a warm rubbing lotion, powder, or oil depending on the requestof the patient. Apply lotion to the entire back and use firm longstrokes from the buttocks to the shoulders and the back of the neckexcept spinal area.3. Exert firm pressure in stroking upward from the buttocks towardthe shoulder . Use gentle pressure in stroking downward fromshoulders to buttocks.4.Use a circular motion on each bony area and continue

    Rubbing the back for one and a half minutesto three minutes.5. Close and retie the gown and assist thePatient to turn back to a comfortable position.

    Warm Application and Cold Application

    Cold application causes blood vessels to contract. (get smaller)Warm application - causes blood vessels to dilate. (get bigger)

    Warm Application-When heat is applied to an area of the body, it

    speeds up the healing process by expanding the

    blood vessels, causing the flow of more blood toinjured tissues.

    Cold Application

    Cold water may be used to keep down the temperature of apatient who has fever.Cold application may be done by using a cold-water bottle, icepack, or ice collar w/c is used for a patient with tonsillectomy.

    Kinds of Application

    Generalized application is one in w/c heat orcold is applied to the patients whole body.

    Localized Application is done to a specificpart of the patients body.

    Moist Application is one in w/c water touchesthe skin.

    Dry Application is one in w/c no water touchesthe skin.

    Compress is localized application.Soak means to immerse the body or body partcompletely.

    Heat Lamp is done in every 5 minutes.

    Using Binders and Bandages

    Binders-are wide cloth bandages that are used post-operatively orafter childbirth.-Gives support to weakened body parts and hold dressingsand bandages in place

    Bandages-Are used to cover and protect the skin when there is alaceration or open wound.- Elastic bandages are long strips of elasticized cotton heldwith metal clips or Velcro.

    Patient Ambulation

    Ambulation Is the action of walking.

    Equipments:

    Cane is usually used on the patients stronger side to balance her or hisweight between the cane and the weaker side.

    Walker is used when the patient requires some support when walking due toimbalance or weakness.

    Crutches this is used to decrease weight borne by one or both feet and legs orto provide stability.

    Gait Training is done by the physical therapist as the first step toward helpingthe patient to ambulate independently.

    Gait is the rhythm and movement of the feet and the speed of walking

    Offering the Bedpan or Urinal

    Bedpans and urinals are used by patients who are unable to get out of bedto use the bathroom.

    Bed pan - is used by male/female patients for urination and defecation.
