2Steps to Successful Literature presents exceptional performance literature - concert and festival pieces - for begin-ning to intermediate string orchestras. Each piece is correlated with a specific location in String Basics - Steps to Success for String Orchestra Comprehensive Method by Terry Shade, Jeremy Woolstenhulme, and Wendy Barden. Literature reinforces musical skills, concepts, and terms introduced in the method. Sometime, a few new concepts are included. They are officially introduced and described in the score.

The ArrangerJeremy Woolstenhulme received his Bachelor of Music Education degree from Brigham Young University in 2000, and a Master of Arts degree in cello performance from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in 2005.

Mr. Woolstenhulme currently serves as the orchestra director at Hyde Park Middle School in the Clark County School District of Las Vegas, NV, where he teaches and conducts seven orchestras daily. His award-winning orches-tras have performed at the 2008 Midwest Clinic, and in 2010, 2011, and 2015, at the ASTA National Conference. He has also traveled with his orchestras to London, Washington, D.C., Boston, San Diego, and New York. Mr. Woolstenhulme has served as clinician and guest conductor several times throughout Australia, including the prestigious Maryborough Music Conference in 2013.

Mr. Woolstenhulme is a contract member of the Las Vegas Philharmonic. He serves as cellist for the Seasons String Quartet, and performs as a freelance musician at many entertainment venues in Las Vegas. He is also the founder and coordinator of the Las Vegas String Workshop, an innovative summer workshop divided into two tracks, one for students and one for teachers. With a growing number of original and arranged works to his credit, Woolstenhulme is a commissioned and published composer many of which have been performed across the United States and abroad. He is co-author, with Terry Shade and Wendy Barden, of the highly acclaimed string method, String Basics. His speciality is to write for middle and high school orchestras where he composes to teach, challenge, and inspire.

Jeremy Woolstenhulme and his wife, Taryn, live in North Las Vegas with their four children Cadence Belle, Coda Blake, Canon Thomas, and Caprice Aria. Family activities include boating and other outdoor sports.

Basics About the CompositionBaroque Minuet offers great opportunities to solidify slurring groups of two eighth notes. Work with bow divi-sion and speed to help students create an even and legato sound. Use scales as one way to focus on the rhythm and slurring combinations featured in the composition.

Hairpin crescendos and decrescendos can be found in several spots in the music. These may be new music symbols for students to recognize and perform. Isolate these more subtle dynamic changes with scale work.

Instrumentation List (Set C) 16 – Violin 5 – Alternate Violin (Viola T.C.) 5 – Viola 5 – Cello 5 – String Bass 1 – Piano Accompaniment (Optional) 1 – Full Conductor Score

Additional scores and parts are available.

3Johann Sebastian Bach and the Baroque Period

Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750), from Eisenach, Germany, was born into seven generations of musicians in his family. He was surrounded with music throughout his life. When Johann was a child, his father taught him to play the violin and a few years later, his brother taught him the organ and harpsichord. Bach left home when he was about 15 years old to attend a prestigious music school. When he completed school in 1703, he was considered an organ virtuoso. Throughout his life, Bach held jobs at various churches and royal courts. For nearly 30 years, he was music director at the St. Thomas School in Leipzig. As a composer, Bach wrote over 1,000 works including choral, orchestral and chamber music, and organ and keyboard music. Bach shared his love of music with his many children, several who became well-known musicians.

The Baroque Period (1600-1750)Johann Sebastian Bach lived during a time in music history called the Baroque Period. The Baroque Period stretched from 1600 to 1750. During that time composers, architects, painters, clothing designers produced fancy, extravagant, lavish, and incredibly detailed works. The more complex, the better! Europe during these years, experienced growth in manufacturing and trade. Education became a significant part of life for a child, especially boys. In music, the Baroque Period experienced the birth of opera. Stringed instruments, as we know them today, became more popular through instrument makers such as Italian luthier Antonio Stradivari (1644-1737).
