TMAG’s Room of

the week!

Stacking up all the knick knacks in one corner shelf

keeps the room clutter free. To complete the room, a cozy study corner is created with a lamp for those long nights of

studying before an exam

Thousands of years ago, humans constructed houses so they could live a secure life. However today, due to lack of awareness and proper knowledge, we fail to trace several silent killers that grow around the house and may turn life into a perilous one. Don’t worry though, TMAG is here with a list

nAMe

wAes islAMAreA

uttArA

Smoke from tobaccoIt would be wise to prevent any tobacco smoke from entering your house. Given that staying around with a smoker also amplifies the risk of lung cancer, respiratory infection, other lung problems, and possibly heart disease.

RadonRadon is an odourless, invisible gas that mainly grows in the soil under the house. Radon indoors is much riskier than when outside because of it's concentration levels in the air. And that’s not good news for your lungs. leadIf you live in an old building, consider testing the lead level of your house. A more contemporary source of lead contamination is scented candles. Go easy on these since it is particularly dangerous for infants, small children, and pregnant women.

Combustion gasesThese gases are released from essential home appliances such as furnaces, water heaters, dryers, ovens, fireplaces,

charcoal grills etc. Combustion gases include carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide and sulphur dioxide. They can cause flu-like symptoms, respiratory illnesses and even death. Keep the windows open when the cooking is happening at home.

leaksMold grows in damp places like the bathroom, basement or kitchen which can cause allergies. If you have an asthma issue or an allergy, do not use a humidifier. It will make your problems worse.

Researching the topicDespite reasoning that watching TV dramas and programs, which are aired in commemoration to the day, is a better teaching aid, you are still forced to hit the books. Bangladesh studies has become a sore subject amongst the students. Hence, instead of making them memorise pages after pages, a more retentive method of teaching is to make them do their own research on the topic at hand. Googling can often reveal more information than any textbook.

Studying in groupsConsidering the lengthy chapters and verbose style of teaching, it’s not surprising that students often end up learning absolutely nothing. Farhan, a 6th grade student from CGS states, “the articles are monotonous and wordy. Just by looking at the lengthy chapters, one loses his/her interest immediately.”

Though many parents are not ecstatic about the idea of group studies, the benefit of it cannot be ignored. Studying in teams help achieve the target grade by making the learning

process easier, more interactive and faster. You can exchange feedback on the topic, ask each other questions and also enjoy hanging out with your friends without having to carve out that extra time for them.

Planning a field trip Field trips are a great way to learn too! It can be a daylong trip to the National Museum, Shilpakala Art Academy or Jatiyo Smriti Soudho. These trips can be way more interesting and interactive, in the way that books

cannot.While studying about Rabindranath

Tagore and Kazi Nazrul Islam, watch movies like “Shuva” or “The Home and the World” based on Tagore’s famous plays. Such knowledge will always give you an edge during important conversations.

On November 28, the orientation program and workshop, “Champions of Earth,” was conducted by the Earth Club of North South University (NSU) at its campus.

“Champions of Earth” is a competition among the students of different universities and colleges, which focuses on generating solutions to environmental issues. A total of 297 teams registered for the competition and were composed in three teams.

The workshop, mainly designed for college students, emphasised on basic techniques of a good presentation. In the orientation session, the participants were

informed about the guidelines and tasks for the first online submission round of their concept notes, the deadline for which is on November 30 at 12 p.m.

Prof Amin Uddin Sarkar (vice chancellor) and Md Jakariya Ph.D (dean of Environmental Science and Management department (DESM), faculty advisor of Earth Club, chairman of DESM, NSU), were both present at the event.

Guest speakers present at the orientation session were co-sponsors of “Champions of Earth,” from WaterAid; strategic partner Google Business Group; and one of Earth Club’s collaborators, Swiss contact.

Bondhu Garage, an online-based community, organised a “Sky Adventure on Flying Boat” on Friday, December 5 at the Meghna Village Resort. The group, Bondhu Garage, itself represents a club; a new circle of friends, entertainment and opportunities for the youth, that actively engage in exciting activities and simulations as one of the most happening online communities.

The event began as an outing for the winners of a competition, where the “bondhus” were asked to participate in a simple quiz to win the prize to fly high. The winner was not

merely one, but a group, and were all taken out on a sky adventure on the outskirts of Dhaka as a little picnic. The gesture was immensely well received, for the participants were very excited and pleased. Bondhu Fahad, a student of IUB, said, “It was a unique experience, and being in the air felt like complete freedom.”

Bondhu Garage plans their next endeavor “Mission Keokradong” very soon and a revival performance from a classical hard rock band – The Vikings. The details are in their facebook page – Bondhu Garage. Take a look!

16th December: Victory Day. As the citizens of Bangladesh celebrate the day with military parades and fireworks, you are forced to study chapters after chapters from the Bangladesh studies book. However, a few simple hacks can make this subject an easy and appealing read and help you improve your grades

Beauty Check

Decked up in the shuti saree with the flower-garland ornamenting the hair, something yet seems to be missing. Yes, your hands are calling out to the mirror bangles. Let that tink and clink remind you once more why mirror bangles were the trend and why we need them back.

The shoutout for these beloved bangles may have died down recently, but still the charm of these bangles are impossible to resist. Tanjila, a student of Rajuk said, “glass bangles were one of the main reasons we got excited about upcoming fairs and festivals.” She further adds, “all of our friends would show each other the lovely pairs of bangles we would wear to the festival.”

You just can’t get enoughThe quintessential bangali room feels

just a little incomplete without having one hidden shelf of glass bangles. Coming in various colours that put the rainbow to shame, bangles are the instant pick-me-ups for a dull outfit. Saria, a makeup enthusiast on Instagram, said, “no matter what the latest fads are, when you see glass bangles, you just take them.”

It goes with almost anythingWhether you are wearing long kurtis, plain fatuas, or silk sarees, your mirror bangles will tinkle its way into everyone’s heart. With its trend dying down, not too many of us miss the chatter of bangles on our hands. It’s time we bring back this charming jewel and let its beauty take over the world of fashion again.

Straight talkIt is said that owners of a straight (horizontal, with no incline or curves) brows are fact driven and detail oriented. They need to know the technical and practical details of something before accepting it or making a decision. Logical and pragmatic, these people are the kinds you want to call if you want a job done well.

CurvaliciousCurved eyebrows belong to a people’s person. They understand the human interest angle better than anyone else and have a lot of compassion. They are natural caregivers and social workers.

Winged EyebrowsThe arched brow belongs to the natural leader. Owners of this shape seek power and attention, and are great at picking up the reins. One word: Beyonce.

Now, it isn’t merely the shape of the brow that determines your personality. You also have to take into account the thickness and positioning.

Through thick and thinPeople with bushy brows have restless, busy minds. The bushier the brow, the more frenetic the mind. Think Martin Scorsese, he of the iconic bushy brows and frenetic camera tracking shots. And when the brows run into each other to

form one, unbroken unibrow, that’s the mind of a poet or an artist, like Frida Kalho.

The ones with the thin brows like to focus on one thing at a time. They’re also very sensitive, and image conscious. Consider Mariah Carey’s pencil-thin brows.

High and lowThe high brow belongs to someone who has a wait-and-see approach to life. Celebrities like Aishwarya Rai and Megan Fox have fairly high eyebrows. Then there are people with a smaller brow bone, and lower brows, and they tend to be more impulsive. Think Jennifer Connelly.

An ode to GlAss bAnGles

Anyone who’s seen the creepy “Celebs without eyebrows” meme circulating over the Internet, or watched the movie Splice would know that eyebrows contribute a lot to our appearance. Did you know, though, that your brows also say a lot about your personality? Read on to see what yours say about you.

Now, whether you believe in all this stuff or not, remember that thick or thin, high or low, a well-groomed, well-maintained pair of brows makes a good impression. Something to keep in mind for a first date or a job interview.

The Lamborghini Huracan is fast. How fast? So fast that if you jumped off a cliff, you won’t reach 60 miles per hour as fast as the Huracan would do it on a flat stretch of asphalt. This Lambo would do 0-60mph in 2.5 seconds, which means that the acceleration is greater than gravity, but on a forward direction, towards the horizon.

Doesn’t matter what other talents this car might have, its personality is defined by its straight-line performance. It will suck the wind out of you; as if the V10 engine were vacuuming the breaths from your chest and catalysing them into a swelling howl that would drench out an air-raid siren.

The Huracan, pronounced as “ur-ah-CAN,” came in as a replacement for the Gallardo, a car that was the company’s most popular model ever.

The Huracan’s naturally aspirated 5.2-litre V10 engine produces a whopping 602Hp. Lamborghini ditched the single-clutch setup in favour of a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, which allows seamless gear changes, up and down, flowing in

an uninterrupted torrent. Lamborghini claims that the Huracan will go on to hit a top speed of 202mph.

The Huracan has a three-mode rocker switch that lets you choose the aggressiveness of the throttle, stability control and stiffness of the suspension. “Strada” is your base setting followed by “Sport” and “Corsa.”

The steering wheel on the Huracan hosts a number of buttons that…does things. Following Ferrari’s logic that stalks on the steering column only get in the way of the shift paddles, Lambo has decided to embed the windshield wiper controls and turn signal switch on the steering wheel. The only downside is that sometimes you might accidentally activate the wipers while turning, which chips away from your coolness. And the sad part is you can’t claim that you saw a bug on the windshield because the glass is raked so steeply that insects seem to glance off it. On the bright side though, the switches on the steering wheel conjures a Formula One vibe.

In the finest Lamborghini convention, the Huracan sets its limits high, and

you’ll need all the bravery in the world to explore them. While the construction of the Huracan is made of lightweight materials; the chassis is a fusion of aluminium and carbon-reinforced plastic. However, the brake rotors are carbon ceramic but it doesn’t feel supple. It’s indeed a stiff car, serious and brutal in the way it goes about its business.

Any all-wheel-drive system can send only as much as 50 percent of the power to the front wheels, but almost 100 percent to the back. Such variability in torque distribution means the cars handling will never be purely predictable. However, the all-wheel drive on the Huracan is what allows any driver to exploit its greatest talents and that time-bending acceleration.

Everything on the Huracan comes down to the starter button, which has a red metal cover that you flip up as if you’re arming a warhead. On most cars, that would be a ridiculous pomposity but in this one though, it feels rather appropriate; Huracan armed and ready to chase down the storm!

What makes a leaderover the years, you’ve built a steady and massive fan base. What is the secret to building your own brand name?

I think the only way you can capture space in the hearts of people, is by doing genuinely good things for others and having a solid positive impact in the lives of others. It can be done through teaching, by showing them the way, by helping them make up their minds in terms of career, different life choices and so on. This is exactly what I have done for the different university students.

But maybe my real secret is Facebook. To me, Facebook is everything. It has literally changed my life. I think whatever I am, is because I could market myself very successfully through Facebook. One day I was telling one of my friends that someone has called me a “shameless self-promoter” and I am really feeling bad about it. She replied, “That might be true, but look where it has brought you.”

What makes a leader

Facing difficulties and rejections is only a part of life. I think the biggest obstacle is not the system or the infrastructure, but it is the people in our lives and in our surroundings who always pull us down. Who always preach negativity in our lives and demotivates us. They suck out the soul from us and kill our ideas. I had put up a Facebook status a few days back on something related to this question, and it has received over 500 likes and over 20 shares. The status

was this: “It’s okay if people do not treat you well. It’s okay if people do not give you the value or the respect that you deserve. Just use this as an inspiration to become really big in life. Use this to become better than them in all ways. Change their negative energy into your positive force.Your day will come, for sure.”

My advice is to use the difficulties to your advantage and use this as a challenge to become even better than what you are now.

Regardless of our efforts to succeed, we cannot help but face a few obstacles on our way. How do you deal with hurdles and rejection?

If there are 5 qualities/attributes that constitute a winning attitude to life, according to you, what would they be?

1. Positive Attitude: See human beings are like radio stations. We emit a frequency. As a result, we attract the same kind of people around us. Musicians, geeks, sportsters, – all somehow hangout with their own types. Now, when you emit positive thoughts and show positivity in your body language – you attract other positive people and positive events will start happening in your life.2. Never giving up: We all fail. All of us. It is only natural. But the difference between winners and losers is this – winners never give up. I mean you might try 20 times and then finally give up, but you never know if the thing hits the success button on your 21st attempt. Please, never, never and NEVER give up.3. Playing with your strengths:If you are great at problem-solving, if people come to you for your advice when they face a crisis in their lives – that means this is your strength area. Now, doesn’t

that make more sense to choose a career where your natural expertise or talent is the number one requirement for that particular job?4. Continuously sharpening your saw: All our skills need to be either developed, or sharpened, or made relevant with the changing times and age. You might be an expert on something, but sooner or later it will fade or you would be attacked by competition. The only way to be a winner at all times, is by continuous focus on learning and developing yourself – on a daily basis!5. Being Grateful:If you are reading this write-up, it might been you are already within the top 10% of the entire population of this country in terms of education or even socio-economic class. You are blessed and privileged already. Please focus on the positives of life, on what God has already given to you. Just be happy, positive, and grateful - and we all will shine.

What do you think people in their late teens and early twenties should be doing with their life right now?

I would request these people to sit back, relax a bit, and think – what do they want to become in their lives? Where do they see themselves in the next 10 years or maybe 20? We need to have clarity on this first, and based on this, we need to do everything that needs to be done in order to reach that goal. That goal would dictate what subjects to study, what should be our major or minor, what sort of connections, network, extra-curricula activities or part-time jobs we should be having. And if we do all these with ridiculous work habits, with passion, with the intensity to succeed – I don’t see any reason why we would not! However, I am a big believer of extra-curricular activities and I strongly believe that ECAs teach us more about life then what our textbooks will ever do. Finally, tell us one life changing incident that really moved and inspired you to become who you are today.Last year on March 13, 2013 – I was driving back home at around 1 AM in my 2004 X-Corolla car. Long story short – my car was hijacked and I

was shot in the leg for putting up resistance. I lost a significant portion of my life’s savings in the blink of an eye. That incident made me realise that life is really short, and no matter how much we plan and follow the system – incidents might happen in our lives that might drastically change our priorities. The people who we love today, might become our enemies tomorrow. And so it is not worth it to live your life for someone else, or to please this society and all its glory. I was not enjoying my 9 to 5 corporate job anymore, but it took me one whole year to take the giant leap, and decide to leave a brilliant six-digit salary with all the benefits in the world – and start Don Sumdany – my own company, from scratch.I am finally happy, and I feel even though I have lost so much, but probably I have gained a lot more. What I do now – training, teaching and inspiring people – gives much more meaning to my life and there is a sense of fulfilment.

What is CIMA? Firstly, CIMA is short for Chartered Institute of Management Accountants. That should give you a little idea of what CIMA is about, but to be more precise, it is one of the world’s largest and leading professional body, primarily UK-based, offering training and support for candidates seeking professions focused on accounting for business. This week, TMAG aims to share some light on this platform, for those interested in being prospective CIMA candidates. Being one of the largest management accounting bodies in the world, CIMA comprises of around 281,000 members from 177 countries across the world. Briefly, CIMA is for everyone. Its core requirement is a competence in mathematics and in english language.

Currently, in the eastern side of the

world, the fast growing market had been having a downfall, meaning that there’s a fall in the overall global trade volumes and activities. Consequently, this has resulted in a decrease in job opportunities and financial services for those searching them. Therefore, companies have become cautious and focused on delivering short term quality results to minimise costs. Due to these reasons, there is now a trend of increasing activities of Small Medium Enterprises, while larger companies are busy hiring key talents. And so despite the challenges candidates face in the competitive market, there are still great opportunities for the most able CIMA candidates as the demand for them is still never ending. Candidates specialising in commercial management accounts are sought for their ability in

making important decisions when given financial information.

Although controlling costs remain high, there is still a search for those who can take commercial approaches to ensure that the margins stay low. Back in 2009, companies stopped employing people who got their training from CIMA leaving fewer experienced candidates to remain. Hence, top quality CIMA candidates should really feel confident. Candidates looking for new roles can search for respective jobs offered by CIMA and should prepare their CV’s well. The main focus of all applicants should to aspire for achievement and contributing big businesses.

Things which are most sought in applicants are:- Records of tangible achievements in

their CVs.- Strong interpersonal skill- Strong communication skills- Persuasive abilities / eloquent

personality

It was clear from an interview which type of candidates are on demand to fill up available positions. This demand really showed us the respect toward the financial experts and also highlights their demand in the society. n

My story I got a call for an interview from an advertising agency in Baridhara. Although there was a strike the next day, I wasn’t worried about cocktails, or fanatic men, as neither my family nor I have ever faced any devastating situation during a strike. My interview was at 10 a.m, and thankfully I decided to leave my car and take a CNG. As I crossed Bishwa road, three men ran towards the CNG I was in, and threw cocktails at it. One burst right as we bypassed it. The chauffeur tried to speed up but they threw a brick, which broke the glass, hit the man’s eye and he ended up driving up the sidewalk causing the CNG to topple over. I was stuck there for 15 minutes before I managed to open the gate and help the chauffeur out. I missed my interview.”

survivAl diAriesThe story of a teen in 1971

The lamentation prevailed everywhere. The sinuous muddy roads were empty. A dog, sitting idly on a heap of sand, was gazing at the swirling fire. Slowly, a group of shadowy figures appeared beside the fire. They looked like they were in a hurry and anxious about a meeting; they couldn’t even notice their dog, Bhola, who was raised his head to get their attention. They took the right lane towards the huge tin-shed house of Mizanur Rahman. Bhola resumed to his prior posture and waited for them to come back.

The group took position at Mizanur’s yard. Panna, the eldest in the group, called Mizanur and asked him to come outside. Meanwhile, Mizanur’s mother, Mazeda came out to talk but couldn’t find her teenage son, Tutul there.

“Khallamma, Mizan bhai has allied with the Pakistani military and is trying to stop us from saving our country. He is providing them with information about the village. He is helping them destroy us and our country. Please allow us to talk to him.” said Panna to Mazeda.

Mazeda replied in a bold voice, “You don’t need to take permission to talk to anyone. You are free to do anything. Do what you think is right.”

Tutul was listening to everything from inside the house and thought to himself, “the storm has come.” “Along with Panna bhai and Ratan bhai, I have to hold on tight to save the ship from sinking. It’s time to kill those hyenas!” He also thought in determination, “the moment has

come for me to fearlessly tell my elder brother to stop betraying us and fight for the country.” What will happen if he joins forces with the enemies? Who will look after Maa?

While questioning himself, Tutul put a shirt on his bare body and left a letter to his mother before he departed. The letter read, “Maa, I’m leaving, pray to the Almighty so your son can win the battle.”

Got you on the hook, haven’t I? See what I just did there? I just won your attention along with a chuckle with just the use of my mere words. You see, if I weren’t gunning for that victory, I would have lost your precious attention at the very beginning. Precisely speaking, my invitation to your attention was delivered with the utmost honesty & sincerity. Allow me to begin my message with an heirloom of a quote, passed on from my deceased grandfather to my superhero of a father, who ever so graciously etched it into my spirit.

“Honest & Sincere Desire Seldom Goes Unrewarded” – a very powerful statement that requires quite some time to sink in and then the realisation of its true power is achieved. Honestly, to make sense out of the statement, it took me nearly a couple of years of analysing each word and applying them in countless experiences. Even so, I’m still in the expedition of exploring the true power this philosophy possesses. But so far it has been my battle cry for victory; it has been the general to my warrior spirit. It has steered many of my desires into reality and with firm belief, I believe it will do the same for you.

It may sound quite deep and sure as we each have our own definitions of such abstract words. But simply put, the message breaks down to: if you honestly and sincerely desire for something, the drive to actualize them will come naturally and you shall reign over the realms of your desires. Now, what does honest and sincere desire look like? I’m sure you have heard of Lionel Messi (the Argentine Football legend). Have you ever noticed how he chases after the ball when the opposition comes rushing towards him? If not, you can always YouTube it and connect with the analogy. He’s

like a child running after sheer joy, running after the ball without a care in the world, chasing after it with utmost honesty and sincerity, almost as if he’s willing to put his life on the line.

Lets trace back shall we? Would you take a brief pause and recall which of your last desire you had triumphed over? How honestly and sincerely have you approached it? How thrilling was the pursuit? How rewarding was the actualisation of the desire? Be it something outrageous as attempting to conquer the seven summits or something trivial as ordering a 10 inch delicious and sumptuous pizza. You see, the amount of effort you have to invest to actualise your desire is fundamentally triggered by your honesty and sincerity.

Essentially, you begin with desiring. Ponder on it, invite it over and make it feel at home. Connect with it in an intimate manner, empathise with it, fall in love with it, commit to it, care for it and be willing to

dedicate your life to it. Keep in mind that as human beings, we are all capacitated with very limited thought procession, sense of dedication, hospitality, patience and endurance. Then the next step, the final step, is to ensure that you will be honest and sincere enough to develop the abilities to fulfill the demands of your desires. Incentivize it to be with you long enough for it to mature, for it to hatch into actualisation.

Of course if need be, you can humanise it and simplify the process. Otherwise you can treat the desire like a vision, an image from the future with shiny, bright lights and a glimpse of paradise. Paint your desire with the brush of honesty, crystallise the image and paste it. You should have to be able to visualise it to the very last detail; remember where the devil lies? Seal the deal with the mark of your sincerity and then we proceed to the ceremony.

After cementing your relationship with your desire, officiate it ceremoniously with your conscience. Allow your inner self to witness and approve the beginnings of the journey to the actualisation of your desire. Now, with you in the passenger seat, desire your pilot to work with honesty and sincerity with the co-pilots; next stop: “Station Dream Come True.” Dramatise the station, turn it into a film, which you would die to star in, glamorize it and make it feel irresistible.

There you have it, the roadmap to “victory”. Get out there and desire, honestly and sincerely. Gun for the victory, but choose your battles very carefully. If your desire is strong enough to overpower the death-grip of fear, the fear of losing, proceed with all your ammunitions. Honestly and sincerely desire, and victory shall be yours!

Perhaps you read the headline silently just like you did with the previous article or you did the right thing and yelled it out loud! If you did the latter, it’s prudent to assume that you possess the spirit of a warrior, which is more of a prerequisite for an optimum reading experience. Otherwise climb back up and do the right thing, if you wish to take something from the next seven to ten minutes of your precious life

Tareque Masud was born in Nurpur village, Bhanga Upazila, Faridpur District, East Pakistan in 1956. He studied in the madrassa system for eight years, up till the Liberation War, which interrupted his education. After the war, he completed his HSC from Notre Dame College and completed his Masters degree in History from the University of Dhaka. Masud was actively involved in the film society movement from his university days and was also a pioneer of the independent film movement in Bangladesh. In 1986, Masud founded the Bangladesh Short Film Forum and in 1988 he organised the International Short and Documentary Film Festival, which to this day takes place biannually. He married his American-born film editor wife, Catherine Masud in 1988. They spent decades making films together, writing scripts, co-directing and editing their works.

Masud’s first film “Adam Surat” was completed in 1989. He based the documentary on the Bangladeshi painter SM Sultan. One of his most famous documentary films of all time “Muktir Gaan” (1995) tells a true story of a music troupe during the Liberation War of Bangladesh in 1971 who sang songs to inspire freedom fighters. The film blends genres in a musical structure to tell the story of the birth of a nation and the ideals of secularism and tolerance on which it was founded. The picture brought about record audiences and became a cult classic. He received “Best Film Award” from Bengal Film Journalists’ Association Awards in 1996 and a “Special Jury Prize” from Festival of South Asian Documentaries in 1997 and a “National Award” for it. Following this, he also made many other films set during the war, which includes “Muktir Kotha”

(1999) and “Narir Kotha” (2000). His first full-length feature film, “Matir Moina” (2002) which debuted at the Cannes Film Festival in 2002, which won the International Critic’s Award, is a film that is inspired from his own childhood experiences. He also won the FIPRESCI Prize for Directors’ Fortnight for “its authentic, moving and delicate portrayal of a country struggling for its democratic rights.” The film also won “Best Screenplay Award” from International Film Festival of Marrakech in 2002, “Best Film Award” from Bengal Film Journalists’ Association Awards, Kara Film Festival and Channel I Film Awards in 2003. “Matir Moina” was one of the first Bangladeshi films to be widely circulated and received critical praise and enthusiasm for its realistic presentation of life. In 2006, “Ontarjatra,” featured two generations

of non-resident Bangladeshi coming back to Sylhet from London and struggling with issues of cultural identity. His next feature film, “Runway” (2010) was about the influence of radical religious teachings on a young boy, caught between the modernistic and traditional values.

Masud received “Jury Prize” from International Video Festival of India in 2003, “Best Direction” award from International Film Festival Bangladesh in 2006, “Special Jury Award” in Osian’s Cinefan Festival Delhi in 2006. In 2012, he received “Ekushey Padak,” the highest civilian award of Bangladesh. He used to tour remote towns and villages throughout Bangladesh to show his films for which he was also known as the “Cinema Feriwalla.”

Tareque Masud was taken from the world before his time. Masud’s

last incomplete project, “Kagojer Phool,” was set to start filming. He was visiting locations with his long-time co-worker Mishuk Munier, a well-known cinematographer, TV journalist and CEO of ATN News. Tareque Masud, Mishuk Munier, and three others were killed in a road accident near Ghior Upazila on 13 August 2011 while returning to Dhaka from Manikganj on the Dhaka-Aricha highway. Since his death, his wife Catherine has established the ‘Tareque Masud Memorial Trust’, which is dedicated to the task of archiving and memorializing Masud’s work through publications, educational projects, screening programs, and the completion of their unfinished works. To this day, both Tareque Masud and Mishuk Munier are dearly missed.

Tareque Masud was Bangladesh’s very own independent screenwriter, film director and producer, and a lyricist. His motion picture “Matir Moina” (2002), a film set during the unrest in East Pakistan that lead up to the Bangladesh War of Liberation, won him three international awards, and was Bangladesh’s first film to compete in the Academy Awards for “Best Foreign Language Film”

Love guru TMAG presents, Lola and Mr. Twist to aid you in all of your romantic endeavours. Send in your love/relationship/crush problems and have them take a stab at it.

QMy boyfriend has recently taken up body building. He is only 18, a year older than I am, but he aspires to be a really macho man. He is always talking about his new diets, his fitness regime and how snug fit t-shirts make him look oh-so-good. Its great that he has become so health conscious and I am proud that he has come this far. But when all we talk about is how good he looks while taking a selfie then we have a problem. How do I get him to stop being so self obsessed?-Distressed

Mr. Twist: Everyone goes through a similar “working out/my-muscles-look-so-good” phase, it’s natural. But what struck me is that your boyfriend is under the illusion that just toned muscles and looking good makes one a “macho man.” Macho? Maybe, but there are different things which he needs to be before he can call himself “a man.” For instance, understanding what his girlfriend is uncomfortable about. I’ll give you a test for him to prove his “masculinity,” ask him to change habits of his which you dislike and if he can change them for you, the relationship might just last forever.

lola: Clearly, your beau suffers from narcissism. He cant get over his new found biceps and muscles. Loving yourself is great but I guess he is taking loving himself a tad bit too seriously. The best way to go about this is to start mimicking what he does for a few days. If you are already into working out, then talk about the new moves you have learnt to tone your arms, or look over at a mirror and go gaga over your jawline. This shift in attention should start to bother him. Take this chance to sit him down and speak your mind. Tell him its not cool that your relationship revolves around his perky muscles.

lola: Well jealousy is something that comes with the relationship package. It can be cute until it turns ugly and messes with your peace and quiet. Firstly, you should be okay with a bit of possessiveness considering the fact that your mother is protective of you. Maybe you secretly enjoy being pampered and put in a safety net by your loved ones. Instead of getting mad at your girlfriend you could introduce your new friend to her and try and make them friends. Include them both in your study get togethers and lets just hope that doesn’t turn into some cat-fight. When she notices that you are open to a friendship between them, she may start trusting you and let you be. If she disagrees to this arrangement, then there’s always that door you can walk out from.

QI have recently been very upset with my girlfriend’s lack of respect for my family. Yes, my mother is very possessive of me at times and my father wants me to go grocery shopping with him every few days- but its always been like this and she just wont understand. She keeps telling me how I am their pet, and I have no individuality. Also the fact that I have been recently spending a lot of time with a new female friend I met in class, is not helping my case either. She has been helping me with math and physics, and my grades are finally starting to look up, but my girlfriend blows her fuse every time I tell her I am studying with my new friend. I really don’t have the time and effort to deal with this. Please help.-Possessed

Mr. Twist: Some parents are possessive but that doesn’t necessarily mean that you are a “momma’s boy.” Even if you are, there’s nothing wrong in that. What matters most is that your girlfriend must understand that. As for the friend who helps you with studies, she shouldn’t worry too much about her unless she has an actual reason to. Your grades are looking good with her help, your girlfriend should take that into account as well. If she fails to reason with you on the matter, as Lola said, there’s always that door.

The term “Comicon” needs no introduction. Over the past two decades, the pop culture explosion has taken over various countries bringing together enthusiasts of TV, movies, comic books, and the entire universe of super heroes under one roof.

In 2012, Saadi Rahman (of Incursion Music) and Syed Abu Yousuf (of Roll Out) found Dhaka Comicon. Both are collectors from an early age and is regarded to fuel up the pop culture movement in Bangladesh. Along with the assistance from fellow collectors, whom they met on facebook, the first ever Dhaka Comicon became a reality in December 2012.

The founders knew the interest was there, but the gathering was still a mystery. Hence, there was very little expectation when Dhaka Comicon opened its doors at the Bench Café in Gulshan, boasting a huge collectible museum, various vendors selling comic books, action figures, posters, to name a few products; there was also a “cosplay contest” (fans dressing up as their favorite super hero characters) for the first time as well as a platform for artists to showcase their fan art creations whether it was art, stories or films along with live music. The event was inaugurated by Mr. Ahsan Habib, Dhaka’s very own and first comic book

creator. During the two days, more than 10,000 people showed up and the culture was officially born. Fans wanted this to be a yearly event and they were promised Dhaka Comicon 2013 “Bigger & Better.” A few months after Dhaka Comicon, numerous local characters were born in the form of comic books, cartoons, games and action figures. The opening of the very first toy museum in Bangladesh: Dhaka Museum of Toys was the icing on the cake.

This year the Dhaka Comicon will have much more to offer. This year’s event will have cosplay, fan art competition, short film contest, graphic novel releases, cartoon releases, synchronised skits from various TV programs, live music from headlining bands and solo artists, an indoor museum of collectibles, and a long list of vendors selling their pop culture merchandise. To top it all off there will also be a super hero 3D movie film festival coordinated by Dhaka Comicon.
