communication with products ranging from chips & stacks up to dedicated gateways and data

transfer modules.

Softing acquired Psiber Data GmbH and OLDI in 2014. Psiber Data sells cable testing products.

OLDI is an Original Design Manufacturer (ODM) that designs and sells PAC/PLC modules under

other company brands and a few with the OLDI brand. OLDI as a company will continue as an

ODM.

OLDI and Psiber Data products will transition to the Softing brand in 2016.

As of January 1, 2015, the official North America company name is Softing Inc.

tManager: Appliance Manufacturing Track and Trace

Challenge:

• An appliance manufacturer with a pre-existing custom PAC-based MES WIP and Track & Trace Tracking system has reached the limits of expandability to track additional installed components due to a mathematical array limitation in the PACs

• Downloads BOM info from enterprise ERP system to PAC control layer, verifies correct components get installed, records lot/serial numbers into Track & Trace record

• High-availability required. Must stand independent of enterprise datacenter in the event of a server outage and continue production for 1 shift by buffering data in the PACs

tManager: Oil & Gas Processing

Challenge:• Oil & Gas processing

application needed an

upgrade

• Original system used

HMI to forward data

to MS SQL

– HMI had to be “up” at

all times in order to

process data

– Limited SQL functions

available in HMI

scripting

• Also wanted direct

data transfer from a

gas flow module

Solution:

• OLDI tManager with MS SQL Adapter and Modbus TCP/IP Driver

Results:• Speed

– Faster transfer with direct PLC-to-SQL solution

– Allowed more data to be stored to enhance enterprise reporting

– Direct data transfer from gas flow module with tManager Modbus TCP/IP driver

• Flexibility

– Can execute a wider range of SQL instructions

© 2016 Softing Inc. All Rights Reserved.

tManager: Oil & Gas Processing

Why Chosen:

• Eliminated use of HMI to pass data on to database

– Removed HMI to SQL scripting as possible point of failure

– Easier to troubleshoot than advanced HMI scripting.

• Buffering of data when connection to database is lost

– Ability to keep the system online during database maintenance/troubleshooting

• Ease of configuration

– Organization of triggers

– Visual interface is more intuitive for new engineers

• Logging and Error Reporting Capabilities

– Ability to troubleshoot issues via detailed log

– Automated reporting of errors

© 2016 Softing Inc. All Rights Reserved.

tManager: Materials Weighing

• Challenge: Current process had operators waiting for assays to be input by lab, then had to retrieve them and do calculations manually before entering into HMI. Subject to delay or transcription/calculation errors

• Needed a way for assays to be delivered straight to the PLC promptly and accurately

– Third party software package used to record laboratory assays for Precious Metals and other elements

– Some assays used in the PLC logic on the plant floor– New expansion to the plant greatly increased the amount of assays needed in

PLC logic

© 2016 Softing Inc. All Rights Reserved.

tManager: Materials Weighing

Solution:• Every 4 minutes, LIMS server sends changes to FTP site

visible to Process SQL Server• SQL database SSIS package scheduled to retrieve all assay

changes from FTP site every 4 minutes• SQL stored procedures created to retrieve exactly the

assays needed• tManager module used to communicate directly to the

tManager: Materials Weighing

Why Chosen:

• Great Support

• Having data available to the PLC gives greater flexibility and control of the process

• Robust unit

– Don’t have to worry about intermediate objects (Operators/HMIs)

• Monitoring and Notifications alert immediately of any issues to reduce downtime

• Protection of PLC from outside networks

– Two network ports on tManager allow connection to PLC network and another connection to SQL Server network

• Flexible Usage

– Over Ethernet configuration means not having to work in PLC cabinet

– Software can be installed on any computer for configuration

tManager: Tire Curing Data Collection

Challenge:

• Implement an automatic system to collect process data (M/C status, press open and close, curing time, cycle counter…) from 120 curing presses and upload to a central Oracle database.

© 2016 Softing Inc. All Rights Reserved.

tManager: Tire Curing Data Collection

Solution:

• A PLC installed on each Press

formats the data in a single array of

values [35] and sends this array to

the PLC Gateway.

• The PLC Gateway collects data

into a bi-dimensional array

[120,35].

• When key elements change in the

array, tManager raises a Trigger

that calls a stored procedure in

order to manage and store data.

© 2016 Softing Inc. All Rights Reserved.

tManager: Tire Curing Data Collection

Results and Why Chosen:

• Control process parameters for all presses

• Faster data exchange between Oracle and PLC

• tManager automatically enumerates all PLC and Database tags

• Increased robustness.

– New Architecture is not susceptible to computer viruses or Operating System issues.

• Plug and Play Hardware in the case of a module failure.

© 2016 Softing Inc. All Rights Reserved.

tManager: Global Warehouse Management

• Integrate information from production lines in multiple plants to a global warehouse management system (WMS)

• Support multiple endpoint technologies

• A highly available system with multiple methodologies for failover and buffering

tManager: Global Label Printing

Challenge: Implement a Centralized Global labeling system to print labels on demand on any printer in the North American network

– Information for labels comes from SAP server in Europe

– Plant floor PLCs cannot be directly connected to the global network

– Need same configuration in 5 different plant across United States

– Production must not be impacted by the labeling system

– Deliver a solution that minimizes Subcontracted IT services interaction that could cause 3-6 week impact to replace/upgrade a PC-based solution

© 2016 Softing Inc. All Rights Reserved.

Global Label Printing: Traditional Solution

• Need a computer at each location– Custom or Commercial Software needed

– Communication Driver needed

© 2016 Softing Inc. All Rights Reserved.

• Use existing ControlLogix chassis– Bridges two Rockwell networks natively

– Data transfers/triggering via drag & drop configuration

tManager: Global Label Printing

© 2016 Softing Inc. All Rights Reserved.

tManager: Global Label Printing

Results & Why Chosen:

tManager:Automotive Assemble-to-Order

Results and Why Chosen:

– Station reader at lower-level PLC (PLC 5) reads VIN and send to Gateway (PLC + tManager)

– tManager modules pull message from the Gateway PLC and send it via JMS to FactoryTalk ProductionCentre

– FactoryTalk ProductionCentre processes the incoming VIN message and returns order build details for the specific station via the message queue

– tManager modules pull message from the queue and route data to the originating lower-level (PLC 5) station

– WebSphere Application Service, WAS, is clustered; tManager can failover to backup messaging queue if primary unavailable

– System supports 60 to 80 jobs an hour

– Gateway failover in development
