To help protect children in our facilities, we’ve instituted the “CODE ADAM” program.

These are the steps to follow when a customer reports a missing child:

If a visitor approaches you and says that a child is missing, quickly get a detailed description and/or photo if available.

The description should include: » Name, age, hair color and eye color

» Approximate weight and height

» What the child is wearing, including the color and type of clothing

Page “CODE ADAM” using in-house phones, PA system or other communication devices. Include description of the missing child in the announcement.

After hearing “CODE ADAM,” all facility employees should begin looking for the child.

» Employees who have been assigned to entrances/exits should assume their position and immediately begin monitoring. Ask visitors with children who resemble the description to wait until management arrives. Then ask the child his/her name and if the adult is his/her parent.

» Your facility management will assign responsibility for other important designated areas like the restrooms and back room.

» Escort the parent or guardian of the missing child to the front of the facility to assist in identifying the lost child.

Call the police immediately. » DON’T HESITATE, CALL 911. The police would rather get a second call saying that the child has been found than to discover too late that the child has been abducted.

» If video surveillance is available, provide it to the police when they arrive.

If the child is found and appears to have been lost and unharmed, reunite the child with parent or guardian.

If the child is found accompanied by someone other than the parent or legal guardian:

» Use reasonable efforts to delay the departure of the adult accompanying the child, but DO NOT put yourself, the staff or people around you at risk.

» Call the police and provide a description of the person accompanying the child. If the person has left in a vehicle, try to obtain the vehicle description, plate number and direction of travel.

Conclude the incident. » Announce “CODE ADAM Canceled” on in-house phones, PA system or other communication devices.

» Report the incident to management even if the child temporarily wandered, triggering the “CODE ADAM” Alert.

Copyright © 1994-2017 National Center for Missing & Exploited Children.

PASO 7
