Cultural Committee News from Jim DiBiase

DECEMBER ITALIAN MOVIE NIGHT “Detective Montalbano” Episode 9, “The Scent of the Night”

Saturday, December 2 at 7:00 pm in the Cantina

Montalbano’s back, and we’ve got him! Based on the International Best-Selling Mysteries by Andrea Camilleri, Luca Zingaretti stars as Detective Montalbano in Episode 9, “The Scent of the Night”. A financial wizard disappears with money entrusted to him by the people of Montelusa. When his car is found with the corpse of an employee inside, authorities are ready to call it a Mafia killing. The remaining employees offer to help with the investigation, but can any of them be trusted?

Movie is in Italian with English subtitles. Possibility of some brief, tasteful nudity and a little salty Italian language. Donations accepted to defray cost of DVDs. Join us for complimentary snacks and another Montalbano mystery.

JANUARY ITALIAN MOVIE NIGHT “TERRAFERMA”

Saturday, January 13th, 7:00 pm in the Cantina

Two women, an islander and a stranger: One completely upsets the life of the other and yet they both have the same dream; a different and better future for their children. Their Terra Firma.

Ernesto, 70 years old, doesn’t want to break up his old fishing boat for the money he could get for scrap. His 20-year-old grandson, Filippo, who lost his father at sea, is suspended between the time of his grandfather and that of his uncle, Nino, who has given up fishing to cater to the Island tourists. His young widowed mother, Giulietta, feels that the unchangeable rhythm of the Island has rendered everyone alien there and that there will never be a future for her nor Filippo on the Island. To survive it’d be necessary to find the courage to leave.

One day the sea thrusts into their lives other voyagers; among them Sara and her son. Ernesto receives them; it is the ancient law of the sea. But there are new laws now, man-made, that don’t permit this and thus the lives of the family Pucillo are turned upside down and they must choose an alternate course.

Movie is in Italian with English subtitles. Possibility of some brief, tasteful nudity and a little salty Italian language. Donations accepted to defray cost of DVDs. Join us for complimentary snacks and a thought-provoking film whose subject matter deals with current world conundrums.

Italian Idiom for December: Stare con le mani in mano Lit. translation: To be with your hands in your hand/hold your hands with your own hand.

English equivalent: To sit on your hands.

If you are at least a little bit familiar with Italian body language, you will immediately understand why this expression has a negative connotation for us: do you realize how frustrating it is for Italians to stay still without frantically gesticulating to express ourselves?

This phrase could address someone who’s doing nothing while everyone else is working. "Non stare lì con le mani in mano, aiutami con questa valigia!" “Don’t just stand there! Help me with my luggage!"

You can also use this expression to highlight people’s poor manners if they were supposed to bring something (a gift or some food, for example) but didn’t, but came holding their own hands instead of holding something nice.

"Che maleducato! È arrivato alla festa di compleanno con le mani in mano." “How rude! He came to the birthday party holding his own hands."

CHRISTMAS EVE IN THE ITALIAN TRADITION

Friday, January 19, 2018

Members $32; $40 Guests

Doors open at 6:00 pm; Dinner served at 6:30 pm

Serving a multi-course seafood dinner on Christmas Eve (La Vigilia) is a wonderful holiday mealtime tradition that originated in Southern Italy. Known as the Feast of the Seven Fish, a traditional Italian Christmas Eve is a celebration of the vigil awaiting the midnight birth of the baby Jesus.

The dishes served vary from family to family. This year’s menu consists of the following:

Antipasti: Calamari salad, baccala salad and roasted peppers (roasted in the oven). Pasta: Two types of pasta served family style: pasta with clams in a white sauce and pasta with

baccala and savoy cabbage in a red sauce. Secondi: Stuffed squid in a white sauce, baked scallop scampi, potato, beet and fennel salad

and steamed broccoli with oil & lemon Dolci: Tiramisu, sfogliatelle and Italian boxed Terrone

Bread served at each table.

Two bottles of wine (red and white) served at each table.

Remember, everyone working on this event is a volunteer and they put their heart and soul into the cooking, while having a lot of fun with the preparation.

Again this year, we must limit the number of people for this event to 150, so please call early to reserve your tickets.

Please call Marianne Reali at 415-6341 or Jim DiBiase at 767-2292 for reservations.

We hope to see you there. As always, you won’t go home hungry!

Thank you, Marianne Reali

Some Italian Fun Facts

The Italian wolf is Italy’s unofficial national animal and plays a large role in the legend of the founding of Rome.

When McDonald's opened in 1986 in Rome, food purists outside the restaurant gave away free spaghetti to remind people of their culinary heritage. There are two independent states within Italy: the Republic of San Marino (25 square miles) and the Vatican City (just 108.7 acres).

Parmesan cheese originated in the area around Parma, Italy. Italians also created many other cheeses, including gorgonzola, mozzarella, provolone, and ricotta. No one knows when the pizza was invented, but the people of Naples made it popular.

The University of Rome is one of the world’s oldest universities and was founded by the Catholic Church in A.D. 1303. Often called La Sapienza (“knowledge”), the University of Rome is also Europe’s largest university with 150,000 students.

Happy Holidays Everyone The Charity Committee has been very busy. Through donations from the committee members, we were able to put together 3 beautiful baskets to raffle at the Christmas Craft Fair. The raffle was a huge success!! Thank you to all who bought tickets and to everyone on the committee for your generosity and giving spirit. Also, through the generosity of the Club’s membership and a rather large donation from Cumberland County Corrections, were able to put together boxes of food to give to the 3 families we have adopted for the holiday season. Thank you all. The Giving Tree is in the cantina with tags on it for the same 3 families. Each tag has something on the back from their wish list. If you would like to help, simply pick the tag/tags you would like to shop for and return the items, wrapped with the tag attached ( tape to the package by the string for easier removal later )to the Giving Tree by December 16. If you are not a shopper but would like to help, we will gladly take a monetary donation and do the shopping for you. Any help is appreciated. Save The Date for the Charity Committee’s Annual Spring Fundraiser - Mark your Calendars for Saturday March 31; an evening event with MISSPENT YOUTH. More details to follow in the upcoming months.

And lastly, I would just like to say how wonderful it is to be a part of something bigger than myself. We, as a club, are truly an example of the saying, “ many hands make for light work”. Wishing you all a very, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Buon Natale Tess Hakkila Charity Committee
