January 18-25 is the annual observance of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. The theme chosen for 2017 is RECONCILIATION - The Love of Christ Compels Us. (2 Corinthians 5:14-20). This year too marks a special time in our Christian Faith as we recognize the 500th anniversary of the Lutheran Reformation. During this week especially let all Christians come together in prayer. Pray for peace, hope, love and reconciliation. For more information go to www.geii.org.

Light Refreshments - Door Prizes
Did you know that there are more than 20 individual ministries and organizations here at St. Scholastica parish? Some, like musicians and Eucharistic ministers, may be quite familiar to you, but there may be others that you do not know or have not thought about. These ministries - and the wonderful volunteers who staff them - help make our parish such a special place to worship the Lord and to foster our efforts to build His Kingdom on Earth.
We invite you to learn more about our parish ministries and the work they do at a Ministry Fair to be held on the weekend of January 21 and 22 in the Parish Hall. The fair will be held at convenient times around the weekend Masses.
Sat., January 21: 3:00 - 4:00 & 5:00 - 6:00 pm Sunday, January 22: 10:00 - 11:30 am & 12:30 - 1:30 pm
On behalf of Life South Community Blood Centers, Inc. I would like to thank St. Scholastica parish for their continued support. It is because of individuals like yourself that we are able to save lives every day in our community. With your continued efforts we were able to have a good day of collections on Sunday, December 18, 2016. The following is a breakdown of the total donations. Prospective Donors 7 Deferred Donors 0 Actual Donations 7 When you consider that one donation can save up to three lives it is easy to see how donating blood can make a significant difference in someone’s life. One never knows when the life that is saved may be a member of your own family, a friend, or a co-worker. Once again thank you for your continued hard work and support of our blood drives.

We would like to change our lives, become “new people”, more alive. The Mission offers us this possibility. Can you make this Mission? Decide today to put off anything that may interfere. You deserve this rich new life God offers you.

“Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.” Matthew 2:11
The image of the Magi kneeling before the infant Jesus and opening their treasure chests for Him is an image that we should all try to follow all year long. In gratitude for all that we have been given, we are called to generously share all of our gifts, not just the ones we pick and choose. God wants us to be the most generous with that one thing that means the most to us.

THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD
THE STAR OF BETHLEHEM
Son of God; and myrrh—Jesus becomes king by dying for us all. We can express our faith in many ways. We can volunteer to help the poor, the elderly, or the disabled. We can teach our children how to pray and tell them about all that God has done for us.
Third, they were not afraid to take risks for Jesus. How often do we take risks for the Lord, by openly speaking about our faith, or giving God credit for the good that we do? Let the star of Bethlehem remind us that Jesus is the star of our lives. Tom Schmidt, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
Almost every year at Christmastime, you can find a newspaper article or TV documentary about the star of Bethlehem. Astronomers give various theories about whether the magi saw a supernova, or a comet, or a conjunction of two or more planets. But for us, the star has a deeper meaning.
In Matthew’s Gospel, light is used as a symbol of the good news of Jesus coming into the world. That’s why verse 9 of the Gospel has the image of the star preceding the wise men and stopping over the house
where Jesus was. By following the star, they become followers of Christ. So what do the magi show us about following Jesus? First, they take the initiative. They saw the star, figured out what it meant, and made their journey. As followers of Jesus, we can look for what needs to be done (in our family, parish, or community) and do it.
Second, they expressed their faith in Jesus by the gifts they brought: gold—a gift for a king, who is worthy to be followed; frankincense—Jesus is worthy to be worshiped as
The unfolding of the story of the Incarnation continues today as the Church celebrates the Epiphany. The tale of the magi from the East is one of the most fascinating in all of scripture. It has much to teach us about what we can come to expect, even in circumstances and places that may seem insignificant or small. Bethlehem was a tiny town, what we might refer to today as a town without even one stop light. Yet it is over this seemingly insignificant place that the guiding star stops in its own search for the place where the Savior would be born. Too often we fail to recognize the fact that the star of Bethlehem comes to rest in our everyday lives, where we can experience God’s presence, manifested in ever new ways. Epiphany calls us to shake off our stupor and recognize the One who comes to save us.

TRUE HAPPINESS

LIFE IN THE LIGHT understanding of the good, of Jesus, and our resolve to do good in a world where evil often seems too powerful. The joy and the promise of Christmas are made real in these ordinary days. This is the Epiphany.
Today we are reminded that there is darkness in the world. There is evil. Herod is concerned with protecting his position and his power. Jesus is concerned about protecting the poor and the powerless. Evil disguises itself as good. Jesus offers himself with no disguise or pretense. Evil always puts
its self-interest first. Jesus always puts the poor, the afflicted, and the lowly first. The holidays are over and we return to Ordinary Time. We return to our ordinary lives. This is the most important time because it is during these ordinary days that we strengthen our

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITIONS
This year, in the United States the celebration of the Epiphany falls on January 8, but the traditional date for the Epiphany is January 6. The date we know as January 6 was established as the solstice in Egypt in 1996 BC, but the Egyptian calendar lost a full day every 128 years. Twenty centuries later the actual solstice had migrated to December 25. People still kept January 6 for the solstice celebration, but December 25, matching nicely with the Roman pagan feast of the Unconquered Sun, launched an extended solstice holiday. By the time of the early church, the whole period of twelve days was celebrated just about everywhere.
Christians began to celebrate Christ as the true light
of the world in four themes: the Nativity, the manifestation to the Gentiles, the baptism of the Lord, and the wedding feast at Cana. That was entirely too much for one day to handle. A twelve-day season was ready to be adapted, so Christians borrowed from the pagan calendar for their own season of light. Thus early Christian celebrations of the Christmas season extended from one date for the solstice, December 25, to the older date, January 6. The darkest time in the Northern Hemisphere could now be filled with the Christian observance of the arrival of the Light of the World.
