Here at long last is a new issue of SPM Update, one I hope you have been waiting for. A lot has happened recently: for instance, Swedish Sales have a practically new organization. We would like to take this opportunity to present our new team members.

Fender Guitars, the world’s leading manufac-turer of electric guitars, are very successful. Production capacity does not match the demand, and for some time now Leonova Infinity has been used in order to increase machinery uptime in the facility in Corona, California.For the time being, the Infinity is used for shock pulse measurement and vibration with ISO2372, but Maintenance Team leader Bill Holmes says balancing and alignment with LineLazer will soon be added. Monitored equipment includes exhaust fans, paint room ventilation fans, high RPM spindle bearings on machining tools, and lathes.

SPM delivers VCM20 for online condition monitoring to Stora Enso Fors

The board machine BM3, which was rebuilt in 1998-1999, has an annual production capacity of 250000 tons. The SPM® method and SPM Spectrum™ will be used to monitor the mechanical and lubrication con-dition of bearings in its dryer sec-

tion. SPM Spectrum™ is an efficient tool for detailed bearing analysis, providing an FFT spectrum that is compared to the rotational frequen-cies of the bearing parts. In addi-tion, it can identify other periodic shock sources such as gear damage.

With the vCM system in place comes the option to include press nip monitoring or other advanced vibration analysis in the future.Installation is carried out in stages during the fall and will be finished during the Christmas stop.

The paper mill in Fors, located about 170 km northwest of Swedish capital Stockholm, is one of the world’s largest and most modern producers of cartonboard for printing purposes and consumer packagings. Stora Enso and SPM have a long-standing relationship and SPM equipment is also in use in the mills in Skoghall, Kvarnsveden and Hylte, among others.

This year’s User Group Meeting took place in Malmö in southern Sweden, where we had the pleasure of welcoming 28 SPM users. On the agenda this time were two very interesting customer visits; the first with Rexam, the world’s leading pro-ducer of consumer packaging (pri-

marily beverage cans at the Malmö plant), the other at the visitor’s Center and Museum of Danish beer manufacturer Carlsberg, across the Öresund Strait. In the evening, we had a very nice dinner at S:t Marcus vinkällare. The following day was devoted to presentations, e.g. a

practical application of Rule Based Evaluation (RBE) from Taiwan, a review of symptom trending and an illustrating example of the impor-tance of accurate input data for con-dition measurements. Thank you to all attendees and welcome you back to the 2008 User Group Meeting!

Whistler Blackcomb Ski Resort use T30-2

Whistler Blackcomb Ski Resort in British Columbia, Canada, is the largest ski resort in North America. Parts of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games program will take place here, and now the building of the Peak to Peak Gondola is under way in the area. When completed, the lift will have a total length of 4.4 km (2.7 mi). Its highest point will be at 415 m (1,362 ft) above the valley floor. T30-2 has now been selected for condition monitoring on this and other lifts in the resort area. T30-2 is a data logger which measures shock pulse with dBm/dBc, vibration with ISO2372, rpm and temperature.

New transmitter in the SOLID line

To satisfy the various needs of our customers, we continuously work to develop our range of transducers and transmit-ters. The SOLID line is growing and now includes the new SLD722 transmitter with measuring range 0-12.5 mm/s. Like all SLD models it is available with 3 meters of cable or optional lengths, and M8 or UNF ¼” thread.

New laboratory at SPM SPM prepares for the future and will soon take a brand new technical laboratory into use. The lab, located in our existing premises in Strängnäs, is a preparation for continued development of new, innovative solutions for condition monitoring.

The laboratory contains equipment for testing different kinds of bear-ings, transducers, instruments and measuring systems. Permanently connected equipment enables realistic simulation and measurement of shock pulses and vibrations.

The lab equipment also provides improved possibilities to re-create various customer situations. The lab will also be used for demonstration purposes during customer and distributor visits to Strängnäs.

In 2008, our portable instrument Bearing Checker for shock pulse measurement will be introduced in Ex version, approved under the ATEX directive for use in potentially explosive atmosphere.

Stefan ErssonService engineer (North district) since June 25, 2007. Previous employment with the Norrsundet pulp mill where he worked as a PM technician for 16 years, followed by one year with Sandvik.

Kjell EkholmSales engineer (North district) since August 13, 2007. Previous employment with volvo Trucks in Umeå (cab manufacturing), work-ing with preventive maintenance and main-tenance planning for the past seven years.
