Shakespeare uses pathetic fallacy and the paradox ‘fair is foul and foul is fair’ in Act 1 Scene 1 to to present the mystery and power of the witches.

The paradox shows two opposites which suggests a mystery of what is reality and what is an illusion.

Firstly, ‘foul’ reveals the brutality of battle and how many soldiers would have died in the battle that Macbeth has fought in. The ‘fair’ is the triumph of succeeding in battle. This highlights the witches’ power as we see this as a prediction as the audience are not aware of a battle at this point in the play.

Furthermore, the witches’ prediction of ‘foul’ could link to the Thane of Cawdor betraying Scotland. Whereas ‘fair’ could link to Macbeth being loyal and gaining the title of Thane of Cawdor. At this point in the play the audience would feel suspicious of the ‘instruments of darkness’ as they are being shown as powerful beings when they predict future events.

In addition, there is also the link to the weather, suggesting how weather can be ‘fair’ when it is fine and pleasant but can change to ‘foul’ especially in the presence of witches who have the power to change the weather. The witches speak of ‘thunder’, ‘lightning’ and ‘fog and filthy air’ which introduces the audience to a dark, dangerous play.

The witches also speak in unison revealing their powerful nature as they hypnotisean audience with their incantation like childish nursery rhymes. Shakespeare has purposely used rhyming couplets and chanting in unison to highlight the witches as one. This suggests a powerful force as they are linked in their thoughts and speech.

As an opening scene this would be unnerving for an audience. In the 1600s, people were very suspicious of women and especially those who claim to know the future. Religion was a major influence on the lives of society; witches supposedly did the devil’s work and therefore would have been feared by the audience.

In this extract, Lady Macbeth is speaking to Macbeth after reading his letter. This is the first

time she tries to persuade Macbeth to consider murdering Duncan.

In this scene, Shakespeare presents Lady Macbeth as controlling through the manipulation of

her husband. Shakespeare writes how she will ‘pour my spirits in thine [Macbeth’s] ear’. This

shows how Shakespeare intends Lady Macbeth to manipulate and control Macbeth’s actions – it

demonstrates how she intends to change his mind and how she feels she will have to take

charge of the situation as Macbeth will not be able to. The use of the imperative verb ‘pour’

implies that she is going to fill Macbeth with her ideas – she thinks of him as a empty cup

which she can simply fill and use for herself. Further, the use of the noun ‘ear’ implies that

she thinks Macbeth should listen to her – symbolically the ear has connections with birth –

perhaps Lady Macbeth believes she is going to give birth to a new version of Macbeth. She will

control him by creating him. Finally, the use of the possessive pronoun ‘my’ implies that Lady

Macbeth believes she is control of the situation and that she believes she is owns Macbeth.

This concept of control is furthered by the way in which Lady Macbeth tells Macbeth how he

should deal with the king by ‘bear welcome in your eye’ and that he should ‘look like

th’innocent flower but be the sepent.’ Theses lines come after she has opened the letter from

Macbeth and is used by Shakespeare to demonstrate how controlling and power-hungry Lady

Macbeth is. This encourages the audience to feel a sense of anger toward Lady Macbeth as we

begin to realise that she is one of the main reasons why Macbeth takes the steps toward killing

Duncan. It also encourages the audience to feel sympathy for Macbeth as we see that she is

out to control him from the beginning. This control of Macbeth continues as the play develops-

however, her call for Macbeth to commit the deed is undermined by her eventual inability to

do the deed herself and right before the murder of Duncan we see Lady Macbeth at her

weakest. This is particularly important because an Elizabethan audience would not expect

Lady Macbeth to be this powerful and they would expect Macbeth to be able to stand up to

her. Perhaps Shakespeare was trying to develop the Elizabethan understanding of a female

role and demonstrate that women could be as strong as male characters.
