TRANSCRIPT
To use this course:
Work through the power point. Make choices of databases when appropriate. Minimize this power point, and open up the Internet
browser to actually USE the Power Library. That way, you will not lose your place in the power point.
There is an attached file of documents to aid in the teaching and learning of Power Library.
Citing Sources:
If you are using the Power Library for research, you must cite your sources.
After each database there will be a link to the slide that has an example of citing resources.
What is the POWER LIBRARY?
POWER is an acronym forPennsylvania Online World of Electronic
Resources. Power Library is a service available to public
libraries, school, and state libraries and at home. It includes thousands of full text periodical articles, newspapers, a major encyclopedia, photographs, pictures, charts, maps, reference materials for people of all ages.
Why choose Power Library?
Pennsylvanians have access to credible, frequently updated information and resources and this cannot be guaranteed on search engines.
Comparing Google v.s. Power Library
Does your doctor, lawyer, financial planner, or other paid professional GOOGLE to solve your problem?
I hope not!
These professionals subscribe to expensive databases to keep current and solve clients problems.
Educators and Student Researchers
Deserve frequently updated information from reliable sources.
Deserve access to newspapers and journals that are copyrighted and therefore are ONLY AVAILABLE through subscription databases.
How is it free?
If every library negotiated these databases on their own it would cost each library over $22 million.
Our Governor and General Assembly established the Power library so that all libraries and their patrons have this service for about 1.75 million.
That is still about $20,000 in pre-paid resources waiting to be used.
This is a joint project of the Pennsylvania Dept. of Education and the Office of Commonwealth Libraries. It was started in 1985 as a way to establish a catalog of all kinds of libraries. It was the first, and is still, the largest single catalog of library holdings.
These materials are all indexed. It has many teaching materials specifically for teachers within the various databases and includes ACCESS PA, (the Union catalog of all of the member libraries).
Patrons of member libraries are free to have materials sent to them through interlibrary loan, or to use other libraries facilities and materials.
There are three ways to ACCESS the Power Library:
Through a school or public library’s computers Any Internet connection by using the barcode
number on your public library card. Go to your local library’s homepage and find the Power icon
Pointing your browser to http://www.PowerLibrary.net
(Again using your barcode)
What does it look like?
This is the icon that is on desktop in libraries.
When you open it:
From a PPS Central( Teacher computer) at school:
Since all of our PPS schools are members of ACCESS PA/PowerLibrary, the Power library will open. It may say it is not configured correctly but it is totally accessible.
Copy and paste this address into your browser:
http://www.powerlibrary.org/Interface/POWER.asp
The Power Library will open in the same way as in the library.
At school:
Once you have opened the Power Library, you may bookmark it.
Also, you may want to create a shortcut on your desktop for the Power Library. Right click in the “white space” on the page and you will get a menu that includes “create a shortcut on the desktop”
From homes in Pennsylvania:
Any patron of an ACCESS PA public library may access these databases from a home computer.
Copy and past this into your browser:http://www.powerlibrary.net/Remote/Remote.asp?ID=eiNetwork
You will get the following screen:
You may want to:
Bookmark this entrance screen. Also, you may want to create a shortcut
on your desktop for the Power Library. Right click in the “white space” on the page and you will get a menu that includes “create a shortcut on the desktop”
Enter your library card barcode number- no punctuation, no spaces- just the number.
The next screen you see will be the Power Library Screen.
Remember that there is a Children’s and a General List, so it may look different than at school.
The Children’s List screen:
Children’s List vs. Subject List
These two screens are a “toggle” so you are free to switch between the Children’s List and the Subject List.
All of the Children’s List databases are included in the subject list. These are often used by young people and adults to locate information.
Tip of the Day
Each day a new tip calls attention to a feature of one of the Power Library databases.
Finding “the best” in Power Library
Obviously there is a lot of available resources in the Power Library.
While it is very tempting to go to one’s own grade level, and there will be opportunities to skip to these, adult patrons often find much in the children’s resources; and teachers of younger students often find much for enrichment of lessons or other interests in the sections above their own levels.
ACCESS PA
Access Pa The Access Pennsylvania Database is a
world wide web-based bibliographic union catalog and resource sharing guide to Pennsylvania library collections. The holdings of over 2,000 school, public, academic, and special libraries are searchable using a customized version of Brodart, Inc.’s. LePAC Search Software. Library customers, business and home users can search the Database by title, author, subject, any word, location, or a combination of any of these fields.
ACCESS PA
These resources can be borrowed through Interlibrary Loan
Also, if the library is near by, you can often reserve the book on line or by phone and pick it up
