Hello great student of University of Leicester, My name is Ibrahim Mustapha from Nigeria, I

am a MSc. Finance student in this great institution. It is with great joy and privilege for me to

contest for the position of Postgraduate Officer because I believe CHANGE is the only

constant phenomenon of life and CHANGE are effected by visionary representation. My focal

point would be to push the following issues amongst others

NEW INTERNATIONAL PROSPECTOR GUIDE: new prospector guide for the current students

and the new coming international students, which would guide them to get vast knowledge

about the UK rich values and the school. University-wide careers and employability support

and the guidance on equality and diversity issues.

IMPROVING INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS RELATIONSHIP: Improving student’s relationship by

organizing get to gather parties, cultural events, festival events etc.

IMPROVING GOOD RELATIONSHIP WITH UK-BASED STUDENTS: sharing the culture and the

traditions of our community with them and integrating with English culture to have a good

relationship with local students and avoid culture shock.

LANGUAGE: last but not least, it’s very important to understand your lectures and

communicate with others in university. This may be due to difficulties with language or

difficulties with accents. If any International students have language problem, you must not

be embarrassed. It is important to tell someone of your difficulties, so that you can receive

help. I will contact Language can study without any embarrassment.

LEE PICKERING

RUNNING FOR COMMUNITY ZONE ON THE STUDENT COUNCIL

My name is lee Pickering, I am 47 years old. I was on the student council last

year and I am running again because I think there is more to do in improving

the lives of mature students on campus.

As a mature student who studies in the evenings there is a lack of decent

facilities open for the students as most outlets close before 6 pm. I plan to

raise this at all levels of the university. These students should have the same

access to the facilities as the rest of the student body.

As we all know there is a limited amount of rooms available for students to

access, and I think that the mature student room is a waste of resources and

should be used for more wisely. There are many societies who would

benefit from a room that size.

there needs to be a new push to get mature students to get involved with

different societies and the student union, as many feel that they are not

part of the everyday life campus living. Fresher’s fair and the other

information points close before mature students finish their day job.

1. STUDENT HOUSING AND THE COST OF LIVING: too

many of us are living in houses with unaccountable

landlords and lacklustre letting agencies. With the

help of other members of council, I will look at ways

of making people more aware of their rights as

renters, blacklisting rubbish landlords and letting

agencies. One idea would be to set up a Leicester SU

Tenant’s Association.

2. HIDDEN COURSE COSTS AND DEPARTMENT CUTS: will

campaign to make departments more transparent to

students with any budget cuts or hidden course costs.

3. TACKLING POLITICAL APATHY AND INCREASING

PARTICIPATION: there have been too many elections

where simply not enough students have been voting. I

will look at engaging with societies across campus to

make their members more aware of SU elections.

MOLLY-MAE- FOR EDUCATION ZONE REP

AND NUS DELEGATE

I am Molly-Mae Jordan, and I am a 3rd Year BA English Student from South Wales, with

a desire to impose necessary change upon the way in which we learn and thrive as

students.

MY MANIFESTO:

1. EXPAND THE PAL SCHEME: The PAL Scheme is a study

programme in which another student can assist with your

learning, such as through additional tutoring. I believe that

all courses should offer this scheme and I will work with

each department to ensure it is accessible to all students

in need of academic help.

2. REMOVAL OF HIDDEN ACADEMIC COSTS: I seek to

influence the university into introducing free black &

white printing across campus and lowering library fines. I

feel very strongly against hidden academic costs and as an

NUS delegate, I would use this platform to draw

awareness to this issue.

3. LARGER QUANTITIES OF CORE TEXTS IN THE LIBRARY: As

the university converted the bookshop into the Reading

Room, getting your hands on core course texts has

become more difficult. Therefore, I will lobby the

university into providing a fairer number of core texts,

thus making them more accessible.

Manifesto

Name: Susanna Xie

Position: Education Officer

Self-Introduction: I’m a third year undergraduate, studying

International Relations. I was a course rep in my second year, and

also this year. I’m dedicated to achieving better results for my

degree as well as for education at Leicester. I’m actively involved

in different sports and societies, such as table tennis and

Environmental Action.

Key Points

Introduce a group work scheme, as well as peer editing and

revision sessions. Such an organized scheme will help students

achieve higher marks in essays and exams.

Introduce a tutoring system for those that need extra help or

assistance in their courses.

Set up talk stations for each department where students can go

and talk to people about educational difficulties and problems

they are experiencing.

Organize learning trips at least twice every Semester to bring in

creativity and fun, as well as increase opportunities for

interactions between students.

comfortable as much as I can.

Work on hearing from all people wherever they ـ0ـ

come from and whatever their background is.

Hi there!! My name is Abdulhamid and I am currently a

first-year student in the biological sciences school. I

was brought up in a very diverse background and,

OGE OBIOHA

I am in fourth year, studying Law with a Year

Abroad. While in Australia for a year, I volunteered

at a youth centre that provided support for

disengaged youth. I hope to go into this field of

work, and use my law degree to make a difference

in someone’s life.

Act, as best as I can, as the voice for as many students at the University of

Leicester, especially those that may remain hidden during conversations

on issues surrounding their wellbeing.

Ensure the Union continues to provide support and promotion of useful

services and societies, such as Nightline Leicester, Sexpression: UK, the

Mental Health Awareness and Support group and other groups alike.

Work on better advice on coping mechanisms during your studies and

contribute to the execution of ‘de-stress during exams’, improving what is

on offer. Also encouraging better advertisement of such advice and

support.

AMBER BARNES-ROBERTS

FOR COMMUTER STUDENTS’ REPRESENTATIVE

AND NUS NATIONAL CONFERENCE DELEGATE

#GetReadyForChange

ABOUT ME:

I’m a second year Sociology student who commutes to university by bus from a

little town called Hinckley! I’m originally from Wales, but I grew up in Dubai and

Thailand. In my spare time I like to try new things (especially food!) and visit new

places.

KEY IDEAS:

I will…

1. Aim to provide accommodation for commuters at big university events - such as

Freshers and Refreshers. This will enable students who are unable to afford to stay in a

hotel or who are unable to travel home late at night to participate in night time events.

2. Campaign for a ‘Commuters’ Lounge’ for commuting students to use during the day.

This will provide a safe space for students who don’t have the option to travel home in

between lectures and is a concept that is in place in many universities outside of the

UK.

3. Organise more daytime social events including events aimed specifically at commuting

students. This will allow commuter students to participate more in university life without

having to travel home late at night and commuter students’ events will provide a space

where they can meet fellow commuters.

I would also like to raise the issues of being a commuter student along with these ideas at the

NUS National Conference to attempt to improve the university experience of commuting

students across the nation.

Hello, I am Thomas Oliver, a Second Year Politics and International Relations student. I am

running for Democratic Procedures Representative in order to build a better, more inclusive

democracy in the Students’ Union. I’d be perfect for this position as I am very organised and

motivated to fulfil the role.

Manifesto

I have three core actions I will carry out if I’m elected. Once implemented I believe these

policies would significantly improve the operation of the democratic structures and student

access to them.

1. Improve Information Flows to Students – New students to the University should be given clear and accessible information in their Welcome Pack explaining the institutions of the Union and how they can get involved. In addition, current students should have easier access to the information about the Union’s democratic structures and how they operate. Posters and animated videos in the Students’ Union Building maybe a way in which this can be achieved.

2. Commission a Survey on the accessibility of Democratic Structures – A survey should be carried out on how accessible the Union’s democracy is to students. Following the survey, targeted policies can then be created to combat any issues that maybe discovered.

3. Advocate for a Union Council ‘Catch-Up’ Service — The livestreams of Council should be placed on the Union’s website for people to watch retrospectively, essentially acting like a ‘catch-up’ service. This would be especially useful for those who cannot attend the meetings or watch the livestreams.
