What Tobacco Smoke Contains

• Tobacco smoke contains more than 4,000 substances. More than 50 of these are linked to cancer. – Substances that cause cancer are called carninogens.

1.-One substance tobacco contains is nicotine. Nicotine is a poison. In fact, in the past it was used to kill insects. – Nicotine speeds up the nervous system. – It also makes the blood vessels smaller. As a result the heart

must work harder to move blood throught the body.

What Tobacco Smoke Contains 2.-Tobacco contains a posinous gas called carbon

monoxide. This gas takes the place of oxygen in the blood. A little carbon monoxide makes you tired. Too much can kill you.

3.-Tobacco smoke also contains tar, a dark, sticky paste. When people smoke, tar coats the air passages in their lungs. The tar builds up and makes breathing difficult.– In time, some smokers arre not able to get enought oxygen to

keep their bodies working. They may even get lung cancer, because tar is a carcinogen.

Long-Term Effects of Using Tobacco

• The respiratory system is the body system that is harmed the most by smoking tobacco. Breathing in tobacco smoke over and over again irritates the nose, throat, trachea, and lungs.– Eventually, these irritations cause smokers to

cough a lot.

• Smokers are much more likely to die of chronic bronchitis and emphysema than nonsmokers.

1.-Chronic Bronchitis• Starts with a buildup of tar in respiratory system.

The buildup causes the breathing tubes leading to the lungs to produce excess mucus to swell. This makes it hard for the person to breathe.

2.-Emphysema• Destroys the tiny air sacs in the lungs. When

these air sacs are destroyed, it takes longer for the lungs to do their job.– People with emphysema have a hard time breathing.

Often they can’t get enough oxygen to exercise or even walk short distances.

3.-Lung Cancer• Is the disease most people

relate to smoking. Cancer destroys healthy tisuue and organs. The longer a person smokes cigarettes, the more likely he or she is to get lung cancer.

• Smokers are also at risk of getting cancer of the mouth, esophagus, larynx, throat, and digestive system.

4.-Heart Dieases• Heart diseases caused by smoking kill people

every year. Chemicals in cigarette smoke make the heart work faster and harder. Smokers are four times more likely to die of heart disease than are nonsmokers.

Stop – Or Don’t Start• Most people who use tobacco continue to do so because

they can’t stop. So why do people start?

• Some young people start using tobacco because they wonder what it’s like. Others start because their friends urge them to start.

• Many young people thing using tobacco makes them look grown-up and cool. But the fact is that most grown-ups don’t use tobacco and that cigarettes make people sick!

• Don´t think you can smoke a cigarette once in a while or quit whenever you want. Nicotine is an addictive drug. People who are addicted to nicotine become nervous, depressed an irritable.
