CONGRATULATIONS John Cardinal RIBAT, msc First MSC Cardinal and First Cardinal for Papua New Guinea!

This is an extraordinary event and honour for the Church of Papua New Guinea and for the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart (MSC).

Archbishop Ribat, who was knighted recently, is from Volavolo village, East New Britain Province. He was born on 9 February 1957. After school, he joined the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart, completed his seminary studies in Port Moresby, and was ordained to the priesthood on 1st December 1985.

I first met Fr John Ribat msc when I went to Rabaul in 1993. He was the Novice Director for the PNG MSCs; I was the Rector of the Minor Seminary, Chanel College, with 120 young men who were completing their Years 11 and 12 studies; the MSC Novitiate was in the plan-tation next to ours. So began a great friendship between us. He is a wonderful man and MSC priest.

During the middle of the 1990’s, Fr John transferred to Fiji as Director of our MSC Pacific Union Novitiate there. While in Fiji, he was appointed Auxilliary Bishop of Bereina Diocese back in Papua New Guinea (it is very close to Port Moresby), and ordained bishop on 11 Feb-ruary 2001. Entrance antiphon: I call upon you, God, for you will answer me; bend your ear and hear my prayer. Guard me as the pupil of your eye; hide me in the shade of your wings. Response to the psalm: Our help is from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. Gospel acclamation: Alleluia, alleluia! In a nutshell

Jesus tells a parable about the need to pray continually and never lose heart.

We are God’s ‘chosen’; God knows our needs and difficulties, and is always listening and ready to help us.

When we pray with faith, God will see that justice is done for us – that we receive what we need.

It is important that we pray continually, and not just when we want something.
