then Bred Cows/Pairs & Breeding BullsBoy the feeder cattle markets have caught fire. Friday we had 4 weight strs at$1000/hd. and replacement hfrs. over $1300/hd. Reports out of the Dakotashad hvy 5 & 6 wt. clvs. fetching $1200. For several years I’ve been preachingthat the industry was going to have to “buy” a calf crop. Feeders are sendingout a directive, with their wallets. That we need to produce more cattle. But willwe?? Dry conditions persist in parts of the country increasing cow slaughter.The nation’s appetite for ground beef continues to be very strong. At this timea rebuilding of the herd seems impossible. We might be just scratching the sur-face on feeder cattle values. Well the parish picnics are starting. We’ll see youall at the auctions in Defiance on June 10 and Panama on June 22nd.Westphalia, Earling & Portsmouth are just round the corner. For an on the farm appraisal ofyour livestock please call!!FED CATTLE/WEIGH COWS TUES, MAY 29TH: With Memorial Day Monday, wehad a lighter run of weigh up stock. The Fat cattle would have traded steady to $1 lowerand the weigh up would have been $2-4 lower. Pressure on the weigh cows is beingattributed to hvy runs in the dry areas of the country. Parts of Kansas, Central Nebraska,& western areas of Wyoming & Montana need moisture. What this industry doesn’tneed right now is another reason to sell-cull more cows!!
BRED FEMALE TUES., MAY 29TH: We had a super cow special Tuesday fea-turing 1 nice string of 1st calf hfrs & another large string of broken mouth cows. The1st calf Hfr Pairs traded $2000-$2200. They were very good kind.The broken mouth pairs were pretty thin but had an excellent set of 175-200# clvs@ side. Those pairs traded $1300-$1500. Just food for thought, if you had some oldcows you were thinking about culling this fall, what if you bought an equal numberof 1st calf hfr pairs now and sold those cows in a month or so when hopefully thisweigh cow thing will be pretty smokey. It might be the cheapest time in history toshave 8-10 years off your aging cow herd!!
